- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56Why is the guy in the yellow shirt not wearing any pants?
- Iceduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Pants are an unnecessary luxury. Why are you so materialistic?

I do business in Russia and, with the exception of the same kinds of ignorant/criminal jackasses we find in the States, they are warm, funny, interesting, and educated people. They are also, however, poor, thanks to sixty years of greed and and economic mismanagement by short-sighted ideologues who managed to grab power and keep it at the end of a gun.
I'm not sure if they'd appreciate this or not, but of all of the Central and Eastern European countries I've worked in Russia has struck me as the most like America -- multicultural, educated, and relentlessly entrepreneurial. But Russians have managed this under much harsher conditions than most Americans will ever face in their lifetime, and for that they get my respect.
Sorry, I didn't mean to inject a note of seriousness in what will surely be a serious of "wacky Ivan" and "mud gets stuck in you" jokes. Please resume. - mianos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Unless that highway is 9000 kilometers long that's not in Moscow. Yakutsk is in Siberia. But not marked as lame as the photos are pretty damn cool.
- dziban303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Isn't this the kind of stuff that screwed both Napoleon and Hitler?
- ptcfast2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35In Soviet Russia, highway muds you!
- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Because it's usually permafrost - yakutsk is in deep siberia, and is one of the coldest cities on earth.
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Also check out this for a russian pothole.
http://englishrussia.com/?p=258
Son: Watch out daddy for that pothole.
Daddy: I'ts alright son its only a. aaaaaa wtf. - evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13lol, I'm guessing it has something to do with either losing them in the mud or taking them off to prevent losing them. At any rate it's not a pretty sight.
- jgzman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14How well do you speak Russian? Or any non-English language, for that matter?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Oh no! A Russian speaking, native Russian, in Russia, spelled asphalt as asfalt on a Russian website, alert the Russian grammar police!
Seriously, who cares? - m1tk4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9To clarify some things:
1. Yes, it is a federal highway. By the looks of it it is closer to Yakutsk, than to Moscow. There are 2 unpaved strips of federal highways that I know of - this one and another one around Chita (near the Chinese border). In both cases they see very little traffic, and most of the time these roads are just frozen. It is very expensive and just not economical to pave these roads since they see very little traffic and what you see may happen once a year *maybe*. There are lots of places in Siberia like this where you can only drive to them in winter, and you have to fly there in summers.
So, in a way, this is like finding some f'd up place on I-80 somewhere in Nevada or Nebraska, and posting it as "Look what happens on the I-80 interstate connecting New York and SF". True, but somewhat out of context.
2. The roads under communists have been worse.
3. You can easily go 70km/h on this road in January. (scratch that. *I* can easily go 70km/h, but even I wouldn't want to.:)) - cshontz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9As a cult Jeep enthusiast, I say hell yes. Paved roads are a fine example of needless government spending.
- AHIGHERGOD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Its a cool site.
- jgzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I may never complain about local Interstate construction again.....
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Lol at those crazy ass Russians
http://www.englishrussia.com/images/roads3/11.jpg
That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. - mcnasby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Definitely not even wearing short shorts!
http://www.englishrussia.com/images/roads3/11.jpg
. . . On a more serious note - why in the hell would you drive that far into the mud if you *know* your V-dub is going to get stuck like that? It's like Bart touching that electrified cupcake. From the looks of it people just don't know when to stop! - kyleh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6how can that be acceptable
- dstz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I love that it has taken so many people to set up this hoax.
this is a hoax, right ? - bwjacket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Things are really going well for our comrades over there.
- jlrolin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Honestly, who the hell would just drive up to that and say "Wow, let's keep going!" right into a huge mudpit of crap in their small ass compact car? Look at some of those pictures, I think I see a freaking PINTO stuck in there.
- nielsbjerg, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4I love picture number 9 from the top, the signs saying that there is road construction and that the speed limit is 70 km/h ~ 45 mph! I would NOT be going as fast as that!!
- mianos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually it looks like that mud, then it rains for a few weeks (non stop of course), then you get a short break and then the temperature drops like a stone. It was the temperature dropping like a stone that got most.
- BarriedaleNick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nonsense - There is no one highway between Moscow and Yakutsk City - its about a quater of the way round the world. This is just a picture of a muddy road - could be anywhere.
- chuckscharf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Talk about needless government spending, how about the trillions of dollars the U.S government spent from the 1950s up to 1991 "protecting" us from this technologically advanced super power?
- Pushkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From a document somewhere on the net:
Yakutsk - is 6875 kilometers from Moscow.
The difference between Yakutsk and Moscow time is 6 hours
That is a bit far away from Moscow I'd say... - cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://englishrussia.com/?p=319
"Stop drinking vodka, get some shrooms!"
Oh man, I can only imagine what that poster would look like in modern times, with a modern propagandistic flair! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If this Russian van's a rockin' don't come a' knockin'...
- OropheR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Normal things for russians are crazy for us, and the countrary.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Awesome! looks alot like my home Alaska. that highway looks like a mudbog blast for my yota with 35"s yeehaw bring it on
- toarn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like clay mud.. ever try walking throught that stuff?
- benbread, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9asfalt? Don't you mean Asphalt?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those roads have been left unpaved to keep the Germans out. This is what Russians have told me when I have previously discussed this subject of their undeveloped infrastructure.
Maybe this is some kind of joke, or outdated WW2-era thinking, I don't know, but you try driving a Leopard 2 or any heavy tank through that.
http://www.paulscarfe.com/images/mudbeatstank.jpg - Djerrid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where is this Yakutsk, Russia you speak of?
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=yakutsk+russia&hl=en&ie=UTF8&z=8&ll=62.042138,130.297852&spn=1.820867,6.943359&t=h&om=1&iwloc=A - nanomaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those pictures remind me of some of the roads that were shown in the doc The Long Way Round. Amazing show/movie/whatever. I caught a few episodes here and there on OLN (Canada) and then wound up buying the DVDs just to make the viewing easier.
Basically the premise is that Ewan Macgregor and Charley Boorman want to ride motorbikes around the world (and do some work with children with UNICEF), from London to NYC. They're nearly completely self-supported and go through some beautiful places, and also struggle through some situations mostly due to bad "road" conditions.
I always thought Ewan seemed like a really cool/interesting fellow, but you really never know if you're just interpreting the characters an actor plays as being their real personality. I didn't think that's what I was doing in his case, and seeing The Long Way Round further proved that.
Highly recommended! - Elektriq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're a loser.
- polumrak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The description includes only Moscow City while the article actually reads "Moscow City — Yakutsk City". It's 6 time zones away from Moscow. It's closer to Japan than to Moscow.
- dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow!!!
And I thought my road in Salem Connecticut was bad cause of a few potholes and some stream overwash during rainy times.
Seeing this made me rethink the whole idea of how bad things can be!!! - punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do I get the feeling that you think the moon landing and 9/11 were hoaxes as well?
- SnowBladerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting, I go 4x4ing in stuff like this for fun in my Jeep Rubicon :)
- NoSalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WOW ... that's F'd up!!!
- kozie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice, but that's not a v-dub
- trovoltex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was directly after heavy shower. In general up to 100 km/h is ok there.
- heyy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6i'd like the phone number of that blonde russian chick in the baby blue. she may possibly be my future wife
- firstdueco41, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"...break the locks on the trucks in search of food and warmth..."
Put on your pants you dolt! - rmazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a hoax.
Notice how a convoy of cars seems to make it for miles on this road and then get stuck?
Is it really bumper to bumper on slop highway?
Also, the people clothes and hands are a little too clean form their climb for life from their mud-covered cars. - kevyn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2he scares me
- cetaceous, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I hope that was sarcasm, if they were still communist I dare say that wouldn't happen.
- Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Jar jar?
- DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I wonder if anyone died in that pothole.
