- shyner, on 11/14/2007, -22/+163Who knows what would have happened to the man's family if he didn't have a gun to defend his home. Every family should have the right to self defense.
- f4nt0m4s, on 11/14/2007, -9/+132Guns are a bit unnerving. A few years ago I strongly believed that I would never ever own or want to own a gun. On the other hand, protection of your family and property should be above all else. I don't want some ***** that decided to break into my house hurting my family. So...shotgun FTW, because it also doubles as zombie protection.
- SiNN4R, on 11/14/2007, -13/+86Dial 911 and wait a half hour. They will protect you and your family. Don't defend yourself. Thats what the government is for.
- digichris, on 11/14/2007, -17/+85Anyone who invades another person's home (with bad intentions) deserves to die.
- moofer, on 11/14/2007, -2/+46The percentage in Arizona is much higher than the national average. This story really "hits home" with me.
I currently live in the Bay Area, but I was born and raised in Arizona. In 1998, I lived in Chandler Arizona, and my house got broken into. I lived in a 2 bedroom condominium. Both bedrooms were upstairs, the kitchen and living room were downstairs. At 2 am, my female roommate ran into my room clutching her dog, and told me someone broke a window under her bedroom, which would have been the back of the house.
I locked her in my bathroom on the phone with 911, and unlocked my Remmington pump 12-gauge shotgun in the closet. I always kept 4 shells in the pipe, but I never racked it for obvious and not-so-obvious reasons. The racking of a shotgun can be a deterrent unto itself. I went to the top of the stairs, and I could see two shadows moving around below. I called out and stated "you've entered an occupied home, and I am armed. If you attempt to come upstairs, you will be shot".
Shortly afterwards, I could hear our 3rd step creak - they were clearly coming upstairs, even after being warned. To me, this was for the sole purpose of doing us harm. At that time, I racked the shotgun, and they turned and ran out of the house. Had they taken 2 more steps, I would have seen the tops of their heads, and I would have fired.
It scares me to think what would have happened if I wasn't armed in that situation. There definitely would have been a confrontation. The police arrived just a minute later, and caught them running out of the complex. They were both armed with knives and burglary implements (crowbars). - NSResponder, on 11/14/2007, -6/+50In Switzerland, every man from 20 to 30 years old is required to have an assault weapon and a supply of ammunition in his home. I'm not sure of the figures, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Swiss have a higher number of guns per capita than the USA.
-jcr - Lane, on 11/14/2007, -49/+90Statistically the United States has more guns per capita than any other country, deffinatly something these would be robbers should have been aware of before one of them ended up shot. Hell, you can walk right into a gander mountain and buy an m4a1 semi-auto for a grand. God bless the USA!!!
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 11/14/2007, -5/+45Very rarely do these stories come to light. Everyone in America that lives in San Francisco or other large cities thinks that Child-gun accidents are the only things that ever happen to gun owners, because that was all they were ever told about, OR care to hear about for that matter.
Only issue I have is, I'm totally on this guy's side in priciple, but the story doesn't really say why the guys broke in, was it to steal or was it to claim some $$ from some FKed up drug deal or other illegal BS the homeowner might have been involved with? I suppose it doesn't matter, if 3 guys with guns come into your house where your family is, it should be widely accepted that those guys can be killed legally by the resident, and it's a damn shame it's not. - Soffrite, on 11/14/2007, -1/+41It happened in Arizona where we have a beautiful thing called the Castle Doctrine. A man's house is his castle and he has the right to use deadly force to protect it and it's occupants without fear of legal reprisal. Sadly, only 18 other states have this law.
- IKE33, on 11/14/2007, -10/+48I'd be happy someone died, if that someone entered my house and threatened my family. If you are such a piece of lowlife scum that you think you can enter my home, endanger my family, and think you can do so without having possible repercussions, then you deserve to be removed from the gene pool, and I would be happy to be the one to do the removing.
- colincornaby, on 11/14/2007, -15/+49I'm not sure what the OP is on about. None of the 50 states ban guns, as long as you are licensed.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -6/+39Canadians don't need guns for self defense, because Canadians are strong enough to fight a bear by hand.
- active1x0, on 11/14/2007, -1/+31No. Anyone who invades another person's home does not deserve to die. But they most definitely have surrendered their right to live.
If you break into a home, expect to be shot at. - scbysnx, on 11/10/2007, -4/+33yeah defending your home is such outlandish vigilantism!
- ifm1989, on 11/14/2007, -5/+32If someone comes at me or my family with intent to do harm - either rob me, assault me, whatever - the last thing I want to do is place my trust in a spray can...especially when you can become immune to pepper spray when on certain narcotics.
If you don't want to get hurt, don't threaten me or my family. It's a very simple concept. - blorc, on 11/14/2007, -10/+36He could've ended up that way regardless, you dumb *****. He also could've ended up being forced to watch these men rape his family members before killing him as well. It's stupid ***** spineless ***** like you that give invaders the balls to force their way into someone's house.
- Soffrite, on 11/14/2007, -4/+30My father taught me about gun safety when I was 4 or 5 so I wouldn't do something stupid with a gun. Perhaps some actual parenting is needed?
- spawnfree, on 11/07/2007, -0/+26*beer.
fixed. - x083, on 11/13/2007, -6/+31"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Benjamin Franklin
REPEAL THE PATRIOT ACT 2008 - simonpainter, on 11/14/2007, -0/+25Watch the video, guys. One intruder was shot and the injuries were not life threatening. The homeowner had already been assaulted (hit over the head with a gun) before he loosed off his *one* shot. This guy did exactly the right thing and used reasonable and minimal force to protect himself and his family.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 11/14/2007, -6/+31One thing I've learned, if you're going to break into someone's house, try to do some surveilance and figure out if they use digg. If so there's a 99% chance the resident will be unarmed and passive like a wet noodle and take out their anger on law-abiding citizens through political action weeks later instead of you.
- blorc, on 11/14/2007, -12/+36The sad part is that the homeowner will probably be sued. Even if he wins, it will still be taxing on his time and money. It's really depressing to say this, but he would probably have been better off killing all three than wounding one and allowing the police to pick them up. What kind of country have we become when it's demonized to defend your property and life (as well as the lives of your family members) and you can be sued by the person breaking the law?
***** this *****. - redrock34, on 11/10/2007, -2/+25If you need a license to own a gun it is no longer a right but a privilege.
- Soffrite, on 11/14/2007, -7/+29"the intruders probably wouldn't have been armed if they had known the homeowner wasn't some gun toting hero"
Wow. It's amazing how many people live in a fantasy world. - Catgofire, on 11/11/2007, -1/+22I /was/ fairly undecided on the issue... but I hadn't considered the zombie angle.
- t0ny, on 11/14/2007, -1/+21Ya, when I was a kid there was some weirdo in my back yard with a butcher knife and my mom called 911 at 1am and they showed up a 8am asking if he was still there and offered to drive by every hour for a while. Ya cops do a lot of good. I suggest to buy a gun and learn to use it.
- drkeclpse, on 11/14/2007, -20/+40The assault weapons ban of course wouldn't prevent you from doing that...props to this homeowner
- active1x0, on 11/14/2007, -4/+24You people can cite all the statistics you want, you can stand there all day and tell me gun control works, and you have every right to never ever own a gun. But it is NOT your right, or the government's right, to tell *me* I can never own a gun, the only absolutely 100% effective way of preserving my own life and liberty.
Unfortunately a side effect of having such a safe and prosperous nation like ours is that some people have removed the ability to fight for their own lives from their mental capacity. Let's be honest; 99% of the time, you have no need to be worrying if you're about to live or die. And that is a beautiful society in which to live. But here's the kicker: in that 1%, for so many people, it was decided that they would die, and they had no means to defend themselves. What do you say to them? Nothing, because they are ***** dead. Now how many of them would have given anything for a gun during the last 10 seconds of their lives?
How dare you stand there and say they shouldn't own a gun? They are ***** DEAD - there is no coming back from that. Oh, and if you want to deny a person a right to defend his or her family, you should surrender your right to vote for anything ever again, or just leave the country. I will defend my family however I see fit, and deal with the consequences later. ***** you. Family is everything.
Statistics don't mean ***** when you have a gun in your face. - BrainInAJar, on 11/10/2007, -3/+23I was under the impression that Canada had a higher gun ownership ratio per capita ( much, much lower ownership of pistols though)
- skyfire1, on 11/14/2007, -4/+24A shotgun blast to the head will stop anyone. Including zombies.
- captbbq, on 11/14/2007, -1/+19...and what if the robber has an gun (lets say one obtained from a gang or from mexico) and I'm sitting there with a stupid bottle of pepper spray?
Furthermore shock from pepper spray can be overcome, thats why bounty hunters train to take shots of it in the face, and why soldiers train to get doses of tear gas, so that they can continue to function when they get hit. Its better than nothing, but I'm not betting my families life with it. - valkyries, on 11/14/2007, -3/+21doesnt prevent crime? would u rather read a story how the family was killed? one life or five u decide
- one2gamble, on 11/14/2007, -1/+19many of the 50 states ban certain kinds of guns
Take california for example, if the gun looks scary its illegal - AbsurdParadox, on 11/10/2007, -0/+17I was under the impression that in sovient russia, gun ownership has you
- whatthefu, on 11/14/2007, -31/+48Why is this national news?
- skyfire1, on 11/14/2007, -7/+24They also might have been raped, pissed on, and/or shot. I wouldn't take my chances.
- pintomp3, on 11/14/2007, -6/+23the government just makes us safer by creating more terrorists through bad foreign policy and wars.
- pencilneck, on 11/14/2007, -2/+19For anyone who thinks guns are bad/evil and that no one needs guns, the PLEASE put a sign on your front door stating "There are no guns in this home."
- kellymahan, on 11/14/2007, -1/+18Sorry but criminals aren't exactly the type that wants to play fair. If they can get a gun to help them steal, kill, etc.. then they will.
- zmjone2992, on 11/10/2007, -0/+17soviet russia doesn't exsist
- cg06vx, on 11/14/2007, -4/+21Guns don't kill people, People use guns to kill people.
States where guns are more common have lower gun crimes.
the leading gun control advocate successfully defend him self with a gun
Guns are not the problem, parents not raising their kids is the problem. - buddyfarr, on 11/14/2007, -1/+17yep that is right. and if someone breaks into my home I don't give a rats ass if it hurts them when I shoot them. don't want to get shot? don't break into my home. unfortunately for most people we don't live in your fantasy world where everyone is nice and there are no crimes committed.
- NSResponder, on 11/10/2007, -2/+18Sorry to nitpick, but everyone *does* have the right to self-defense. The question is whether the government in any given area protects or violates that right.
-jcr - captbbq, on 11/14/2007, -1/+17A study of Pennsylvania burglary inmates reported that many burglars refrain from late-night burglaries because it's hard to tell if anyone is home, several explaining "That's the way to get shot." Also while we can't prove that burglaries are less directly due to guns, there is hard evidence that Hot Burglaries, when robbers enter the home when the residences are there, often holding them hostage, killing them, raping them, etc... are much lower. Britain and the Netherlands have a "hot" burglary rate near 45% versus just under 13% for the U.S. You Americans know ***** all about Europe.
http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcdgbur.html - kberry67, on 11/14/2007, -1/+17so naturally there are no guns at all in russia. just like there are no gays in iran
- DucoNihilum, on 11/14/2007, -2/+17I suppose we should just allow him to take all of our stuff, maybe even rape our wives, our children.... after all, they dont want to take a life- they're nice folk!
- jpop, on 11/10/2007, -2/+16News at 11, child shoots friend with Taser and kills him. Taser control agencies push for trigger locks for all Tasers...
- gyrfalcon, on 11/10/2007, -1/+15It was nice of you to say something... Personally I would have gone in balls to the wall with a tendency to shoot first, ask questions later. Of course it might have been a legitimate break in, but those are far and few between. It's not like you want to shoot someones Grandpa who has Alzheimer's and thinks he's breaking into his own home.
- isunktheship, on 11/14/2007, -3/+17If someone busts into my house wielding pepper spray I'm not going to take him seriously, just like if this man had tried to defend his family with it. (not to mention that they would be in jail feeding off everyone's tax dollars, including that man and his family who they tried to rob)
He could have given them time to rethink their actions, but as a man protecting his family he didn't have that chance. I doubt that he was "happy". - TheKrillr, on 11/10/2007, -4/+18Yup, and Heroine starts out as an ingredient in muffins. BAN MUFFINS!
