- dafragsta, on 05/09/2008, -0/+71See! This is why we can't have nice things.
- Pottypotsworth, on 05/09/2008, -8/+62They are lucky it wasn't a bunch of 4chan users, there would be no park left.
- Zaeth, on 05/09/2008, -10/+58Damn kids, get off my lawn!
- Shadowgamers, on 05/09/2008, -5/+34GOOD JORB FACEBOOK
- DonSlice, on 05/09/2008, -11/+38What a bunch of asshats.
- plizard, on 05/09/2008, -8/+33oh noes let blame the facebooks
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -10/+30That garden was hardly "destroyed". The fountain was drained for the pictures (and I imagine, to drain the bubbles that are clearly present) and some plants were clearly trampled, but come on. I don't see any structural damage to the grounds, nor trees uprooted. It looks like a couple of thousand bucks and an afternoon of work for a small landscaping crew. This was not vandalism, terrorism or any kind of ism. This was a bunch of dopey kids doing what dopey kids do. God love 'em. Let's hope they're a bit more careful next time, but when did we become so alarmist and humorless?
- alam555, on 05/09/2008, -11/+31let me get this straight, the brits spent millions on cameras to catch individual terrorists from doing bad things in public, and hundreds of kids get away with massacre on public property..hmmmmmmm. makes me feel safe
- alex7575, on 05/09/2008, -1/+20Doctor took you off the Prozac again, huh?
- HibikiRush, on 05/09/2008, -1/+17Can't they all just stick to being peaceful and playing Scrabulous all day? I mean, geez.
- alpha94, on 05/09/2008, -7/+23But social bookmarking with commentary is completely opposite?
- humanerror, on 05/09/2008, -5/+21Why is this news? Oh wait, it isn't: it's dailymail.co.uk.
- DreKor, on 05/09/2008, -3/+16Yes, I'm sure this is facebook's fault. If this was organised via SMS, would you blame Orange?
- babylonian, on 05/09/2008, -5/+18I always thought the term "flash mob" was supposed to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
- reisrocks, on 05/09/2008, -1/+13it's "foresight"
- jdmcadam, on 05/09/2008, -0/+11"Hmm, it is true that old people are often concerned that there are children on their lawns."
- dariusperkins, on 05/09/2008, -5/+15Whilst I don't condone their ill-planned fun, the majority of comments here seem to be toeing the Daily Mail line of middle-aged indignation.
OK, they ***** up and made a mess. Yes they should clean it up.
BUT, a cursory read of the comments attached to the article should make you realise the angle of the story, and see that its intention is to cement the demonisation of youth amongst our tech-ignorant elders.
Jesus, aren't Digg users young, fun-loving people? - inactive, on 05/09/2008, -1/+10Who the hell is talking about robbing a bank? Your argument is full of logical fallacies. Sure, vandalism looks tame when compared to other more serious felonies... But so does rape when compared to genocide. They could've picked a much better place to hold their little watergun fight that wouldn't result in the destruction of public property.
- toekneebullard, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9It's fine that they all had fun. The problem comes from the fact that they didn't take responsibilities for their actions. Sure, have fun, but don't ***** up the place so other people can't have fun. Some people find it fun to look at award winning gardens...who's more important?
What SHOULD happen is this weekend there should be an event for a park clean up, and every asshat responsible for this should rectify it by cleaning the place back up. - MaxMWood, on 05/09/2008, -6/+14In Soviet Russia.. Parks destroy you.
- arcooke, on 05/09/2008, -2/+10Go clean up your mess.
- frenchi, on 05/09/2008, -1/+9BOLLOCKS!!
- thebigbradwolf, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8so, in the other sense you could say they were saving trees.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7If "away from it all" includes Digg, then by all means, go.
- ChocChunkOaties, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7Looks like that water feature was renamed to 'the refill zone'
- twiztidsinz, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7girls in wet teeshirts > nerf
- Witchbaby, on 05/09/2008, -2/+8Water fight? That's bush-league. I woulda had a Jell-o wrestling match with 300 facebook geeks. Now *that* woulda been somethin' to see.
- dycc07, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6You're implying that if they had not met up for the waterfight, they would've robbed a bank? what kind of illogical statement is that? The garden was a carefully cultivated work of art that many people put alot of effort into. Try telling those people "it's just a garden"
- insonh, on 05/09/2008, -10/+15Isn’t a “spur of the moment” society just great!
Your sports team wins, cause mayhem and vandalize everything
Your city is hit by a hurricane, loot to your heats content
Your city holds a summit, cause mayhem, vandalize, and loot to your hearts content
And then when the police come in to stop you call them Nazis and complain about how your peaceful gathering was rudely interrupted and your rights were violated.
Yup a spontaneous society is a wonderful thing - PamalaLauren, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6And? They still destroyed the place.
- glenneroo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6excerpt from the Facebook page:
these are the points that were made during the day that were either heard live over radio or left on the cutting room floor of the editors office
1. we feel remorse for the damage caused to the nelson Mandela garden.
2. BUT WE ARE NOT SORRY FOR THE EVENT ITSELF, due to the fact of the success of the one last year (WHICH HAS FAILED TO BE MENTIONED ABOUT apart from all the vids from last year being used) and the fact there was no intention to cause damage.
3. The police were present throughout overseeing the event and they felt no need to intervene. they dealt with the situation well, if the council wants to give over cctv to the police of the event, let them. if the police were going to do anything about it they would have done it then. called in for riot police and disbanded the situation. they were there before the event started and left after it finished.
4. we put clear guidelines and rules in the discussion bards part of this group to what you could and couldn't do. it is not the fault of over 90% of the people who attended the event that actions of a select few who decided to ruin it for the rest of us.
5. Again the fact that this happened last year and nothing was said about it apart from the videos from the 2007 water fight being used everywhere which in my oppinion is just plain bad journalism.
6. the damage caused has been blown way way out of proportion. has anyone been past millenium square? thousands of pounds? what on earth are they spending all that money on?
7. this was a slow news day the council is under fire because of the bin men strike the council need something to take the heat off them so much, thats why they have over exaggerated the damage caused and played down the sheer amount of people that came (so it seems a few of us caused a lot of damage whereas a hell of a lot of people attended and caused very little damage)
8. unfortunately due to the stage being present on millennium square we had roughly triple the people in about 1/8th the space of last year. it was too late to change the date and was an oversight on our behalf.
9. this WILL happen again, no matter what we will continue to organize more of these events, but we will have strive to improve the event learning from the mistakes from this year. we will definitely contact the police in advance because again they did a fantastic job.
I THANK EVERYONE WHO CAME ONCE MORE IT WAS A FANTASTIC DAY AND WILL BE BETTER NEXT YEAR! - ExGhost, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5I don't know if it was really blatant as much as it was irresponsible fun
- BeforeSputnik, on 05/09/2008, -11/+16Fun in a fountain is one thing, 300 people stomping the grounds is another. A little fore-site and consideration for others would've gone a long way with this group.

- xrEE, on 05/09/2008, -3/+7This was just a simply act of student having some fun in the recent heat spell we've had in the U.K. ( Believe me it isn't often )
I don't understand why all the commenter's here are acting like stuck up 80 year old conservative wankers, it's just harmless fun and a bit of a clear up afterwards! And a perfect example of something they should partake in! - ninjaface, on 05/09/2008, -6/+10When will flash mobs be used for something good like political/social activism?? They only seem to function as a retard round-up at this point.
- ChocChunkOaties, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4The saying goes - "The best thing about Leeds is 2 E's and LSD"
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4why are people so much more easily inclined to be destructive than constructive ? why don't people put on their hottest bikinis and get together to clean up their local beach or something similar ?
