- rootnik, on 11/09/2007, -5/+29FEMA, you're doing a heckuva job.
- drmangrum, on 11/10/2007, -16/+36Buried as inaccurate. Nobody is FORCED to live in a FEMA trailer. I know the socialist cry babies will dig my ass down, but it's been over TWO AND A HALF YEARS! The only people that deserve any sympathy are the infirm and the elderly. However, the bulk of the people still living in the trailers are those that people like to conveniently forget about: The Welfare Leeches. The overwhelming majority of the Katrina victims have moved on. They didn't wait for the government to bail them out. They did what they needed to do rebuild what was left of their lives. I have no sympathy for those who continually wait on handouts instead of taking charge of their own lives.
- usajlh, on 11/10/2007, -3/+21The FEMA employees were only told to stay out of trailers that have been in storage and closed up with no ventilation. The formaldehyde builds up to dangerous levels in unoccupied trailers, not ones that get ventilation and are being lived in. Dug as inaccurate, like most things from crooksandliars...
- klaarn, on 11/10/2007, -1/+16this is so sensationalized... they reported this on NPR this morning. the trailers they want employees to stay out of are the ones that have been locked without any ventilation. they say employees regularly go into the trailers that evacuees are currently living in. however, they are still unsafe and are buying them back from families they sold them to, and testing to see how bad the damage actually is.
i'm not defending FEMA and i think it's clearly wrong and no one should have to live in those trailers (and someone should be held responsible for the contamination) but still, don't sensationalize the stories... - neuralzen, on 11/09/2007, -11/+26Meanwhile back in Iraq, lets kill some people, get some of our people killed, and blow a few more hundred million dollars making the contractors obesely rich. America, ***** Yea!
- khail250, on 11/10/2007, -0/+13FEMA in the X-files movie seemed much more awsome, they could cover up anything, kill aliens... now they cant clean up a puddle of water! molder! where are you?
- tlgjames, on 11/11/2007, -2/+14They're forced to live there and not move why?
- SpencerMc, on 11/10/2007, -3/+11I think this is the first comment on Digg to ever make my stomach actually clench with rage. I live in New Orleans. You want to know why people still live in trailers here? Because a large portion of the city is STILL ***** WRECKED. Drive down Elysian Fields or St Ann and tell me people are leeching off welfare. Most of the trailers are parked in front of houses under heavy construction.
Seriously...
You seem to know nothing of the current situation, and you are just running your mouth off like you are an authority on the issue without providing any statistics or actual facts to back up your ***** talking. Why don't you come to my city and have a look for yourself? I know it's quite a long trip down from your pedestal, but you'll be a better person for it.
***** you very much. - RunawayElf, on 11/10/2007, -2/+9I was with you until the "start over" part.
- Braxo, on 11/10/2007, -2/+8Why don't these people have their own jobs to pay for their own apartments?
What have they been doing for the past 2 years? Just hanging out in their FEMA trailers? I think they've used them long enough, they should find their own places to live. If the trailers are too dangerous to live in, I certainly wouldn't let my family stay another day. - Schda, on 11/09/2007, -0/+6Sorry for the comment abuse, but a little more info here:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ...
Quotes from the article:
In the FEMA testing of closed-up trailers, formaldehyde levels averaged 1.04 parts per million. That's significantly higher than maximum workplace levels recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and three times higher than OSHA's recommendation for exposure during an 8-hour work day. Residents in this case are exposed to the conditions 24-hours a day.
Formaldehyde levels did drop when trailers had their windows open or air-conditioning systems turned on, but many say the levels are still too high and pose a risk for residents.
....
FEMA would not do an interview on this issue. A spokesman says the agency is updating its policy. In the congressional hearing, Paulison did say that FEMA now recognizes the issue.
Since the hearing, FEMA says about 4,000 people have either requested or been offered alternative housing due to formaldehyde concerns. Nearly 1,500 of those have moved into new housing.
....
This graph shows how the formaldehyde levels compare to trailers that have been shut up compared to those that have been left open:
http://www.npr.org/news/graphics/2007/oct/fema_tra ...
So while it appears to be a problem with closed trailers, it might not be as large an issue if the windows are opened and proper ventilation is used. Plus it appears they are relocating people to other places to live if they request it. It does appear there is a problem, but FEMA appears to be doing something to fix the problem. - cg979, on 11/09/2007, -3/+9What I would like to know is why these people can't get a job and find their own place to live. Hell its been over 2 years and they are still crying about Katrina. Its not like nobody saw it coming, you don't build a city below sea level, next to the ocean and not expect it to flood sooner or later.
- HighestHealth, on 11/09/2007, -3/+8Can we expect anything else from the Natural Disaster known as Hurricane FEMA!
- SopMan99, on 11/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I wonder why people still want to elect a big government candidate to the presidency. It's obvious that the government just sucks at life in general... the less government the better...kinda
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -7/+12truth.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -3/+8Forced to live in FEMA trailers?
...or are do they choose to stay there simply because the taxpayers haven't bought them a house they can have their welfare checks mailed to? - phy6uva, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5Exhibit A in the defense of why we should NEVER depend on the Federal Government to provide for the people. I long for a day when the feds go back to providing liberty and the people provide for themselves. PLease lets give the federal tax dollars that are currently being used to make LOTS of people in the metro DC area wealthy back to the states where it could actually be used with some efficiency.
"It is the most populous jurisdiction in the Greater Washington Area and has the highest median household income ($100,318 - first to reach six figures) of any county in the United States."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairfax_County - brufleth, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4I think in this case we're just blaming them for providing housing that isn't fit for human occupation. I think they could have afforded trailers that aren't poisonous.
- drmangrum, on 11/10/2007, -1/+5You think I don't know Louisiana? I was born in the New Orleans area. I lived there. There are many salt-of-the-earth type people there, but there is also an enormous population of deadbeats and welfare addicts. There are few states that rank as high as Louisiana with % of population living off the government. Your stomach may clench at my remarks, but your stomach should be clenching at the fact that YOUR paying for neighbors to live while they do nothing but bitch and moan.
- BOFH2, on 11/10/2007, -1/+5Yeah lets have the state and local agencies take care of it - oh wait, they were warned to evacuate people and did nothing, busses sat empty. But let's blame the federal government for individual state's inability to deal with their residents.
- brufleth, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4Thanks for the additional info. There's still the issue that these trailers were never suited for human occupation to begin with. It is like distributing fire extinguishers that blow asbestos all over the place when you use them. Sure the people needed housing and the trailers offered that but why were these trailers created the way they were?
Unfortunately the answer is that a company saved a buck by producing poisonous housing units.
I'm reminded of the ceiling that collapsed in a tunnel in Boston. A woman was killed. It all came down to some companies saving money by doing unsafe work.
This sort of thing shouldn't happen. It certainly shouldn't happen in the US where we definitely have the resources to make safe bridges, tunnels, and housing units. - DRINKxREDxBULL, on 11/10/2007, -6/+10I can't wait until bureaucrats like the ones from FEMA are in charge of my health!!
- Metman, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3There are still people collecting FEMA funds/subsidized housing from Hurricane Andrew.. since 1992.
source: FEMA budget information submitted 2006 - BOFH2, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3hmm maybe the manufacturers of the trailers or the individual industries that are involved in making the products that use formaldehyde in the first place? How about opening the windows once and awhile. I have lived in MN all my life and even during the coldest part of January and Feb we open the windows for a little while each week to let in "fresh" air.
- geddon, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3What do you think you're witnessing? FEMA is a government program intended to "protect" those who cannot afford their own private disaster response team. As with most underfunded programs in the United States, FEMA is rife with corruption and plagued with bad press that demands its demise.
In case you were wondering how a country slips completely into a Fascist state: Take a look at FEMA, and then look at those who escaped devastation from the recent fires in California. - cpotsic, on 11/10/2007, -3/+6Who's Forcing them?? This is typical social progressive whining. Show me where the hell in the Constitution it says we owe these people a place to live. Get a job, move out, problem solved. You want to be progressive, well progress your ass on out the door and off the dole. Move the real needy like the infirm and elderly into funded housing. How come we don't here the displaced in California whining? I wonder.
- skews13, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3all of our government agencies lack one essential ingrediant;over sight.i suspect by design
- drmangrum, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4Being illiterate is not as excuse. If you put all the programs for adult education aside ( and there are many, both state and federal ), it's not impossible to find a job. There are many service oriented jobs that require little or no formal education. It's not unheard of for the uneducated to start and maintain successful businesses.
I wouldn't be against seeing welfare go to those who at least TRY. Why should they try when they just scream "KATRINA" and everyone nods their heads and gives them everything they need? If people really want to see those in the trailers out of the trailers, then assign a deadline for them to vacate. After two and a half years they should have been able to save at least SOME money. They aren't paying utilities. they aren't paying for housing. They are receiving money from the government. There is no reason, NO REASON, any of them can't be out of the trailer by June of next year. - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -2/+5HAHAHA
DISTRACTION
99% of "Welfare cheats" are from WHITE COLLAR CORPORATE WELFARE and SPENDING ON DEFENSE CONTRACTORS
1) FEMA gives trailers to people after natural disaster; the trailers are poisoned and can cause cancer.
2) People complain and are called Welfare Cheats, with no context given as to why the people are still in the trailers (lack of any real jobs except flipping burgers, lack of public transportation to housing site, more...)
3) Population is successfully distracted from the huge amount of graft given to corporate pigs at the trough and instead blame society's ills on ... Cadillac single mothers!! ("The ***** and Beans are taking all our money!!!")
Maybe its my kid's fault that he got cancer from an imported lead-based toy? After all ... "buyer beware!!!"
Actually, maybe we shouldn't let these people integrate back in society; they might rape our white women!!! - cpotsic, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2What the hell happened to:
"My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country."
I would vote for that man today! - firechill, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2There's a fine line between actually needing the help and just plain out leaching off the government.
- ZenMojo, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2...Okay, that was pretty good.
- cg979, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2And since when in the hell are people who are hurricane evacuee's too good to work at McDonald's? Its a job, and if they weren't to damn lazy to get off of their government supplied couches then they could try to take an active role in their lives instead of having to rely on government handouts like a slug.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3Tweekster - you are so tough; obviously SpencerMc must be a ***** welfare cheat! Should we quickly lynch him before he shows people how to care about community and decency?
- john570, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2But But Think Of The Children!
- pkonink, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Dugg for: "Ever since Ronald Reagan’s inaugural speech when he declared “Government isn’t the solution; it is the problem,” Republicans could hardly have done more to make sure it is the case."
- drmangrum, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2The trailer gets proper ventilation through out the course of day-to-day activity. You obviously missed the part about long term storage. In any event, it's common practice for homes without central heat and air to keep windows opened, at least partially, most of the day, even in winter.
- drmangrum, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3You need to do some research on Louisiana focusing on Orleans and Jefferson parishes if you think these people are poor innocent souls.
- techmonkey4u, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2Our government sickens me.
- Phyltre, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2The sad part is, trailers have been like this for decades. I remember one day back in elementary school the family went to look at manufactured homes with a relative, and the chemicals inside those things were too strong for me to go inside--my eyes would burn, and I'd start coughing You'd think they would recognize that this might be bad for you!
- SpencerMc, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2Furthermore, many of the trailer inhabitants actually own property and have no need nor desire to stay in an apartment. Their houses are simply still under construction.
- bubbadoo989, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3Well, you're right, but you're missing the point. The fact that these are poor, usually illiterate people, who have no voice, puts them in this position. They are readily exploitable victims and whether you've an incompetent administration as the Bush admin, or you put the Democrats/Hillary in the White House, these folks will always be expendable and invisible.
I used to think like you.... why don't these lazy goldbrickers get off their asses and do something, but I now know the problems effecting our country are much bigger in scope. It's not the welfare recipients who are at fault, but the Bush's, Cheney's, Brownie's, etc. - ZenMojo, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2No, these guys are Republican appointees. FEMA was fine during the Clinton Administration, it's the Republicans who make it their job to gut programs until they're ineffectual, hire their rich best friends for cushy appointments (a damn HORSE BREEDER as head of Homeland Security!?), and then declare that government is a failure. They run on their own incompetence!
- 2trkpony, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2Has any government official, congress or senator, ever really worked a day in their lives?
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1So you are saying that the trailers were *designed* to poison their occupants?
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Amen.
- rholland356, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Not! Not if you take a moment to put yourself in their shoes.
Consider that the people living in trailers are those who had to rebuild their homes. They are property owners, which is may be something you aspire to. Now, consider that to rebuild a ruined home, you need serious money, yet you STILL OWE on your previous mortgage AND if you don't build the new house on STILTS, you cannot ever get flood insurance.
If you should become a homeowner in a flood zone, read your insurance policy. You'll discover that damage from flooding is not covered. Imagine yourself faced with the task of rebuiliding. Without big insurance payouts, your sorry ass will be stuck in a gummint trailer, too, as you work your way back to where you were.
And just how long do you think it takes to rebuild a city? How long did it take to build the city in the first place? Two years is not unreasonable.
It is a shame that the trailers were built in such a fashion as to be toxic. Would you have people living in tents for 2 years or more? - rholland356, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1They are property owners, dumbass. They are rebuilding their homes on their own land, which is worth much more to them than it is to others, so selling and moving make no financial sense.
- AdamGeld, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1I encourage everyone to educate themselves about Ron Paul's views and opinions. If he is the candidate for president that you would like to support, please check out the campaign website. www.ronpaul2008.com/join
December 16th, the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party and birth of the American Revolution, is our next major fundraiser event. If Ron Paul is the candidate for you, please donate whatever you wish on that day through the campaign website. Tell your family and friends. www.teaparty07.com - alpha754293, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Um...duh? It's FEMA. It's the crotch-spawn of Bush - and like all his other crotch-spawns - none of them do anything of real significance or importance. (Other then taking headline news...). No surprises there.
