- Goodbyeworld, on 11/30/2007, -3/+86Digg needs a taser section.
- GemStar38, on 11/30/2007, -4/+70If the woman was already on her stomach wasn't she subdued? A taser seems like too much force in this instance.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -6/+63Obviously he was just giving her a free abortion.
- spyd3rweb, on 11/30/2007, -3/+52Moral of the story, don't involve yourself with the police unless absolutely necessary. Don't call them if your neighbor is noisy, don't call them if someone hits your car, don't involve them in anything.
- Bukowsky, on 11/30/2007, -2/+47can we say "Abuse of Power" ?
- miggie, on 11/30/2007, -1/+46She's subdued so there was no need for the teaser. She doesn't want her kid so there was no need to ask her any questions. In NJ we have a child safety law where you can drop off your unwanted child to a police station or hospital with no questions asked. Does Ohio have a similar law?
- thechr0nic, on 11/30/2007, -3/+44using a Taser, should ALWAYS be in a 'last resort' situation. It should be used only in a situation where the officer would have otherwise been forced to use deadly force, ie shot her with his gun.
I have been hearing so many cases lately where they are being abused and used more or less as an easy 'attitude adjustment'. The correct approach is not always, the easy one. From what I have heard thusfar about this case, it seems pretty clear that the woman did not pose a threat and was already subdued. Would the officer thought about pulling his gun out and shooting her in the head, had he not had his attitude adjuster*cough* taser?
This is a disgusting abuse of force in my opinion. - eddy23170, on 11/30/2007, -0/+31police who use tasers because it makes their job "easier" are the same police that should have chosen a different career path...
- stevensj2, on 11/30/2007, -2/+29What is happening all around the country is that tasers are not being used as a sort of defense, or last resort on an unruly person. They are being used simply to assert an unecessary level of authority, and to discipline or correct behavior the same way poor parents spank their kids in the grocery store.
Only this time, the result isn't crying children with runny noses, while people look on sick and disgusted by the parents. People are getting seriously injured, and sometimes die. And no one is doing a damn thing about it.
Again, tasers are not being useddefensively...they are being used offensively.
Further, it is equally as sickening that no one ever seems to intervene. I know there were other officers in that building at the time. Why did none have the moral courage to do their duty and protect a citizen? At times, the hardest decision a man has to make is protecting others from himself. But if he cannot, that is not the caliber of person that should be responsible with protecting our neighborhoods and streets.
Cops have no fear of using tasers. No one will intervene, no punishments will follow, and it be nothing more than something argued about in daily conversations. That has to stop, and it starts with us.
DO NOT let a cop taser an unarmed or peaceful person. DO NOT let a cop use force that is beyond necessary. This country fears its police; you have to remember: police are PUBLIC SERVANTS not public correctors. MAKE them fear us, make them be afraid to use it. It is the only way it will stop.
In any police tactics manual are maneuvers of force used in combat. Strikes to the groin of a combative person are considered lethal force. Yet using an electrical taser on an unarmed, obidient, often elderly, sometimes pregnant person isn't lethal force. Trust me folks...it wasn't a typo in there manual and they did not forget to update their instructions.
They are using them EXACTLY as their department wishes them to. Control, coerce, and correct.
"An inch. It is small and it is fragile and it is the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it or give it away. We must NEVER let them take it from us." - syroncoda, on 11/30/2007, -2/+29until this ***** country considers tasers to be deadly weapons this kind of thing is going to continue to happen. police shooting a pregnant woman? yeah THIS IS COMMON.
- Hickeroar, on 11/30/2007, -2/+26Yeah, no kidding. They should either ban the use of tasers by law enforcement or publicly whip these nitwits who use them like they're silly string. There are FAR too many examples of Police using these things when they shouldn't have. It makes me sick to think that any person would be stupid enough to tase a pregnant woman. That guy needs a lobotomy.
This woman also did nothing legally wrong and they wrestled her to the ground and tased her. Brilliant. - RevEng, on 11/30/2007, -0/+24Tasers, like any weapon, can be dangerous. Why do police not get this? They wouldn't be allowed to beat this woman over the head with the butt of their gun, why do they think they can taze her? You're only supposed to use force when your life is threatened. If a woman who is on the floor stomach down is life-threatening to a cop, perhaps the cop should take a less threatening job.
- glasnostic, on 11/30/2007, -1/+24too many cops think that "walking away" from an officer constitutes a crime.
it does not.. http://www.ralphbehr.net/lawyer-attorney-1251128.h ... - Scottamus, on 11/30/2007, -0/+22That law exists so moms don't drop off their unwanted babies in dumpsters instead. Now this pig has put the fear of taser into moms who for whatever reason have to give up their kid and they might think twice now before taking them to the proper authorities.
- glasnostic, on 11/30/2007, -0/+22yep. as soon as they are involved they are
A: pissed because you interrupted their marathon cellphone chat with their clingy girlfriend
B: pissed because you "civilians" don't know your place
and
C: going to take it out on anybody who doesn't do exactly what they say when they say it not matter what.
i really do hate a lot of cops.. and i have had some great encounters with them.. nice ones at parties, nice ones when loitering with a beer, even nice ones who let me slide with a warning..
i still don't like cops.. - blackinthmiddle, on 11/30/2007, -1/+21Here's the better question. What exactly was she being arrested for? Acting erratically?
She comes in and says she wants to give the baby up. Then, she tries to walk away when the officer asks for identifying info. So she gets arrested and tased for this? The way I understand it, tasers are supposed to be used when someone is a danger to the public or themselves and is the force you use right before using a gun. The only way this is going to stop is when police precincts get sued into oblivion. The taxpayers suffer, of course, but it doesn't appear there's any other way to get these incidents to stop. - NinjaBoy, on 11/30/2007, -2/+20That is seriously what I do. Even when i owned my own business and had some kids come and piss all over the front of my building during business hours I was told by the police I was wasting their time. ***** dealing with the police, I don't want to get tased.
- Coven, on 11/30/2007, -0/+18We have the same law here in NY. Police Stations, Fire Houses and Hospitals all have to accept children with no questions asked.
- glasnostic, on 11/30/2007, -1/+19when being attacked everybody has a natural reaction to either fight or flight. Cops tend to forget this and get extremely bent out of shape if you are unable to restrain your ingrained natural reactions to the attacks of officers.
every cop should have to go through a surprise attack by 5 big wrestler types in uniform so they know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of the strong arm of the law. - RevEng, on 11/30/2007, -0/+17Sure as hell don't bother calling them if you've just been robbed. I've had to do this several times over the last 10 years and I've never had a response time of less than 3 hours. One night when I reported a robbery (that had happened 5 minutes previoues) I was asked, "Can you come down to the station tomorrow?"
- blackinthmiddle, on 11/30/2007, -0/+17I'll give the cop the benefit of the doubt when he says that he didn't know she was pregnant. HOWEVER, it's ridiculous when an officer in a police precinct with a woman on her belly still feels the need to whip out a taser. And again, the better question becomes, why is she being arrested exactly? Because she didn't want to give up any identifying info? In NY, you can just drop off a child no questions asked. She probably thought that that was how things were going to go until she started getting grilled. Then she figured, "Let me get out of here. I don't want this to be on record anywhere." I guess that's a good enough reason to get arrested and tased nowadays.
- JLShaw, on 11/30/2007, -3/+18I'm scared of the police.
- glasnostic, on 11/30/2007, -4/+18tasers are punishmetn. police are not given authority to punish.
- Hanzotori, on 11/30/2007, -1/+15I concur.
- capiCrimm, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13too many people think cops actually give a ***** about the law.
- f4nt0m4s, on 11/30/2007, -2/+15The officer pulled out the taser because he thought that the lady was going to use her baby as a weapon....
btw, i'm pretty sure most states allow you to leave unwanted babies at police/fire stations...rather than a public bathroom or something, which, tragically, you hear about on the news every once in a while. - Phrag, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13Its rather disgusting that we pay for these 'police' with our taxes and all we get in return is disrespect, poor treatment and the feeling that we should be more afraid of them then we are of the 'criminals'.
- kamikazebirds, on 11/30/2007, -0/+12We have the same law in Ohio, where the incident occurred.
- blackinthmiddle, on 11/30/2007, -0/+12Funny, a friend and I were just talking about this a few days ago. I've had almost no good experiences with cops. Even cops directing traffic have given me a hard time.
About two weeks ago, I'm in my neighborhood driving to pick up my girls. A cop is on the side casually talking to a guy in a car. There's a car in front of me and we're waiting for the light to turn green. The light turns green and the guy in front of me goes. So I go too. I have no idea what the cop is doing, but he's on the side laughing it up. As I go, he looks at my car and just points at the floor. "Okay, I guess that means he wants me to stop" I thought. So I did. He goes back talking to whoever's in the car! So he's being a dick. I wait for him and about a minute later, the guy in the car drives off. Then, he points to where he's standing. So I drive up to him.
"Don't you see me standing here?"
Me and my wife both say in unison, "But there was a guy right in front of us and he drove off and you didn't stop him."
"Well I'm out here working hard and everybody's just driving by ignoring me..."
"Sorry officer", I say.
He looks at the tickets on my window and kinda just raises his head. Assuming that that gesture meant I could go, I did so. He didn't say anything. Again, I've had VERY few good run-ins with cops and have very little love for them. Once when I was driving home from school, things landed up where two of them had their guns pointed at me, ready to fire. Nothing wrong. No speeding. No drugs. They just let me go afterwards. - DarkDx, on 11/30/2007, -0/+12That's how it is here in venezuela, spcially when the ***** car robbers are ASSOCIATED with the police (of course not everybody but a lot of people).
- glasnostic, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12same in Texas.
the cop was just being a cop.. typical "i am in charge here, do what i say" mentality.
i keep thinking of a particular NWA song now - nj10ii, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12Would think anybody down and on their stomach qualifies as somewhat subdued, or subduable, without the need for extraordinary measures that a taser would be qualified for usage.
- dondara, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12FTA: "The first officer then forces the woman down on her stomach, and he then deploys a Taser on her neck."
On her neck? WTF is that? So the conclusion is the cop is a colossal pussy who fears a woman laying face down in a police station. That seems to be the common thread to all these taser incidents. Scared little pigs flying off the handle. Disgusting. - deciblast, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12Has the police lost the ability to engage in rational discussion before resorting to violence? Seems like the policy is shoot first, ask questions later.
- sockpuppets, on 11/30/2007, -1/+11Prenatal Terrorist Strike Force. Protecting future generations from harm.
- webagogue, on 11/30/2007, -2/+12The woman walked into the police station, got mad, and then tried to leave. What's the arresting offense? What business did the cop have trying to grab her? Absolutely none. He could have followed her out, radioed for help, and talked her down.
- Hickeroar, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9Same law exists here in TX, except I'm not sure about the locations. I know Fire Depts are one of the places you can drop them off.
- wedgemartin, on 11/30/2007, -3/+12It's time to take the toy guns away from the meat-heads.
- toekneebullard, on 11/30/2007, -3/+12It's come to the point where it's not if, but when the officer decides to use a taser. It's almost a requisite for arrest.
- DancingPaul, on 11/30/2007, -1/+9"She never said she was pregnant. The pregnant parts shouldn't even be listed."
How Bout this - When tazing a woman (which is ridiculous in the first place) how bout you just ASSUME that they could be pregnant every time!!! Common sense can tell you that. Hey, this is a woman, who could be pregnant at any time, and I wouldn't be able to tell. MAYBE I SHOULDN"T SEND XXXXXX VOLTS THROUGH HER BODY!!! Especially if she's not even resisting and I'm already crushing her stomach. - blackinthmiddle, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8Uh, so do you think the video was doctored as well? It's also been picked up by the AP. There's a fine line between healthy skepticism and...your line of thinking.
- edrift101, on 11/30/2007, -3/+11A Taser is NOT a non-lethal weapon NOR should it be used as an "attitude adjuster."
- gn0stik, on 11/30/2007, -2/+10What ever happened to pepper spray?
- stevensj2, on 11/30/2007, -2/+10She doesn't have to.
- DooM, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8I don't seem to recalll a rash of overzealous shootings before tazers were invented. Tazers aren't meant to replace handguns, they're meant to replace nightsticks and fists.
- juniorb, on 11/30/2007, -2/+9What is it with all the police officers tasering people because television and Burger King haven't sedated them properly?
- slicecom, on 11/30/2007, -3/+10Our police are out of control! Tasers should ONLY be used in cases where lethal force would otherwise be used PERIOD.
- Hickeroar, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7sorry it sounds odd to you: http://www.whiotv.com/news/14719706/detail.html?rs ...
Follow the link. - minimitable, on 11/30/2007, -2/+9What's your point? That makes it OK, somehow? Ever hear the term 'unnecessary force'?
- f4nt0m4s, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8I was pulling out from my bank's drive-through one day going 10-15mph and as I was passing some cars in the parking lot and I got t-boned by someone pulling out in reverse. He shot out of his parking spot. I swerved which prevented any major damage but I still lost my right side-view mirror and had some pretty big scratches on my car. I called the police and they said they won't come out for a parking lot accident. The sad irony is I was right off two pretty big roads, and I actually saw a couple of cops driving by. They even had a cop out there looking for speeders. I think that's a load of BS. Although I'm sure a lot of parking lot "accidents" are a chicken ***** call for the cops, the cops should come out anyway because we are paying for them with our tax money. I was furious.
