Hey guys, you should have seen the cool car I made by hacking a bunch of lego. - Totz83, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Original source -

tip for anyone doing this, use a sturdy tripod and use shutter lockup as the smallest amount of movement will give you blurred pictures :( - davecor, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4A real macro lens would be worth the money. This technique looks like you get maybe a millimeter depth-of-field.
Canon makes a great 60mm macro lens for about $350. - chrisbarr, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Hey cool, I made the front page!

- litkaj, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2This isn't news. People have been reversing lenses for macro work for years.
- spacerobot, on 09/30/2008, -1/+3It's also very easy to purchase a macro filter set for 15 bucks. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-al ... It's essentially just magnifying glasses you attach to the lens. The depth of field is incredibly shallow but you get the same results at the guy in this video. Also, when holding the lenses together like that it's very easy to shake a little bit or accidentally sway in or out pulling the image out of focus.
- Icetype, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2You don't need to tape stuff together, get a reverse coupler ring. See some example shots here:
http://duffy.jp/index.php?y=2008&m=07
This uses 28-135mm + 50mm - Coffeedemon, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2Hoogs: the Nikor obviously won't be but you can get a Tamron or Sigma macro in a variety of ranges (~50mm - 100mm) in a EF mount which will fit a recent Canon.
- SillyRabbits, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I don't think you really have any concept of what things cost. You can buy a kids version for less than $100. You can buy a really nice professional scope with a T-mount for cannon, nikon, etc. for less than $1,000.
http://www.microscopes.com/ms-ko-mi-5022.html ($80 for a scope with a webcam that plugs into your computer) - themdjunkie, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2Another cool trick that is similar is taking your 50-55mm lense and holding it backwards against the camera, then that way, you don't need two lenses. Just be careful with your lighting and don't trust your light meter, it doesn't work when your lens is backwards.
- edrodgers731, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2You might also add a pinhole lens cap. You can increase depth of field, at the same time reducing minimum focus distance.
Of course, you are going to need some really bright light. - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I'm going trying this.
I wonder if it has to be a 50mm prime and a ~100mm lens. - explorer232, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2some ppl hate spiders :) just thought I'd give them a warning
- p51d007, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1I snap a couple of "close up" lens units on the front of my camera, set it to macro, and use the telephoto mode. It takes a good mini tripod and a timer to get it to work, but it works. Macro photography is really a fun sideline.
- Hoogs, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2Probably a dumb question, but are they compatible with a Canon camera?
- macunderdog, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1It's much easier than this to achieve the same effect. Just tape a 50mm lens backwards onto your camcorder and zoom in until the image is just the hole in the lens. Macro!
- ba5e, on 09/30/2008, -3/+4Or just buy a microscope.....
- Coffeedemon, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Davecor is right. The DOF with this is insane. You have to use a tripod, you have to bounce whatever light you can get on your subject somehow while it sits about 5 mm from the front of your setup. However, if you have patience you can get some decent results (flickr in my profile has a needle/thread that turned out ok). I used two Cokin rings that were flat on one side and threaded on the other (one is 52mm the other is 58mm). I epoxied them together to make the adapter. A 50mm reversed on front of a 100mm real macro lens will let you see every facet of a fly's eye. Thing is it has to be dead or else you'll never focus.
- hangglide, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1This works great and I was just about to mention it. I have taken some great shots even with a zoom lens held backwards against the camera mount. Held with fingers only!
- Phearce, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Agreed, does this work simply because both lens are focused to infinity, or is there also some requirement based on the zoom and/or lengths?
- Hoogs, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2Sweet, this is just what I've been looking for! I really don't feel like spending $500 dollars on a macro lens...
- explorer232, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1hehe sorry it's a UK phrase, it means great :)
- radio4fan, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1You get adaptors which have screw threads on both sides that screw into the filter threads of each lens.
Check ebay. They're dirt cheap. - themdjunkie, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1My comment below explains how you can do the same with one lens.
- Coffeedemon, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1I don't think it needs to be those lengths but the better the zoom on the lens that is attached to the camera the better the initial magnification. The prime is used up front because then you don't have to worry about zooming that too and likely (just a theory) because 50mm is closest to how the human eye sees a scene.

- Pushkin, on 09/30/2008, -2/+2I need glasses. I read "Extreme Macho Photography Trick"
- codx999, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0I never knew they had that. I'll look into that.
- codx999, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0But you still have to hold the lens, there's no coupling system. I think I'll go with radio4fan's idea.
- GMofOLC, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1Get extension tubes. Lots cheaper and they won't degrade image quality at all since there's no glass in them.
- theadvinci, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1Explorer... you think we'll be scared?
- codx999, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0But you need to hold the 2 lenses together. I tried this with 2 50mm lenses, and it was quite hard to hold them together.
- pcgeek101, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1There's not really any easy way to get around paying for a decent lens.
One cheap lens you could look at is the Nikon Micro Nikkor MF 55mm f/3.5. Still, the Tamron 90mm or the Nikon Micro Nikkor 105mm are worth the extra money. - pcgeek101, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1This is easy to do with a lens such as the Nikon Micro Nikkor AF 105mm f/3.5 lens, combined with a bellows.
- pshoaxbuster, on 09/30/2008, -0/+050mm + extension tubes will give your camera amazing macro abilities
- fejai, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0Doesn't have to be 100mm or anything higher, I use two 50mm and it works just as fine.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -2/+1You can get similar results by just using a magnifying glass.
- Raver32, on 09/30/2008, -2/+0I've tried the Macro filter set - not bad, but the depth of field leaves something to be desired.
There is a ring you can purchase that will mount the smaller lens to the larger one - I have one on the way to test from eBay.

- davidharpe, on 09/30/2008, -3/+0You could also use the totally sweet Canon MP-E 65mm, which has 1x - 5x magnification BOO YA!
