- ecrunner, on 08/13/2008, -5/+54it's all fun and games til someone loses an eye
- alapoet, on 08/13/2008, -11/+54It's always funny until someone gets an eye out.
- kingjafee, on 08/13/2008, -5/+42Jokes on him I guess.
- fahrvergnuugen, on 08/14/2008, -3/+32It's a good thing they didn't show him the disappearing pencil trick...
- jamesmcm, on 08/14/2008, -5/+25Keep the tabloids off Digg. Bury the Daily Fail.
- TheEclipse, on 08/14/2008, -1/+17"Debris from an explosive pellet hit the schoolboy in the eye when he pulled off the cap, turning one of his irises black."
What is this, a roadrunner cartoon? - moxley, on 08/14/2008, -1/+16The caps those things use are the same caps cap guns use. They are generally harmless and there is no way a normal one of those could cause an injury like this as they do not have the explosive force necessary.
The way I see it one of three things happened here:
Either one of the caps was manufactured improperly and filled with way to much powder;
or the kids did what I used to do when I was a kid with these caps and made a "Super cap" by emptying 2 or 3 of them into another one;
or one little grain of the tiny flint specs that are inside of those got blown out and into his eye...
If there really was a lot of force the cap had to have been non standard.
Now all we'll hear is calls to ban pranks and cap guns etc.....You can put your eye out with a ***** pencil. - diggydougie, on 08/14/2008, -6/+19The problem with stories like this is that people will use this as ammunition to call for legislation, which restricts all of our freedoms. One person gets hurt and we all suffer.
- Narcowski, on 08/14/2008, -1/+11Then it's hilarious.
- AeriumWatcher, on 08/14/2008, -3/+11Tough luck for the kid but I want one.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -3/+11Pull my finger can be dangerous, also.
- Morph_Ball, on 08/14/2008, -1/+9They keep going on and on about how "It's a children's toy, but so dangerous!" The packaging says "ADULT ONLY" right on it, and also a warning not to aim it near the face.
And the shop that sold it got fined? It's not as if there was no warning... - 0ceanic, on 08/14/2008, -1/+9that's not a joke, that's a booby trap.
- Coffeedemon, on 08/14/2008, -0/+7Possibly... I've had those caps when I was a kid and everynow and then a piece would pop off and stick on your hand. Even from a single one. A piece in your eye wouldn't require a ton of force.
Don't ban them though... its live and learn IMO.
I remember the red rolls of 6 or so strips of paper caps.. fun times. What a boom they would make if you smashed the whole pack with a sledgehammer. Oddly enough I still have both my eyes and my feet... although I think they stopped selling those caps years ago in my area. - cawpin, on 08/14/2008, -6/+13Yeah, the store owner should go out of business. Are you on crack?
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -3/+10Hah, got you! Now you're blind!
- shutaro, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6When exploding pens are outlawed, only outlaws will have exploding pens!
- Narcowski, on 08/14/2008, -3/+8Just FYI, there's a reply button for a reason.
Also, I think it's the consumer's responsibility, or in the case of a minor, the responsibility of the minor's legal guardian. - 30thElement, on 08/14/2008, -1/+6This was a freak accident. I played with one of those when I was in 5th grade and no one got hurt. The "dangerous mix" of gun powder and grit really isn't so dangerous, it's the same stuff that is in all exploding caps for cap guns and the like.
- polyp2000, on 08/14/2008, -3/+8isnt that the point of a joke though ? you think that something bad is going to happen but really it doesnt?
mwa ha hah aha - beelahg, on 08/14/2008, -1/+5I guess they didn't notice that it says "ADULT ONLY" on the packaging...
- 1337Einstein, on 08/14/2008, -3/+7Normally I'd be the first to complain about how we've become oversensitive, especially with regards to children, but seriously, what kind of ***** designs explosives to look like everyday stuff and market it to children?
- theaverageidiot, on 08/14/2008, -1/+5It also says right under that, "Do not fire within 36cm of the face".
- elixeo, on 08/14/2008, -2/+5Just what we need, more ammunition for the moms of the world to be over protective and excitable.
- SomeImagination, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4Since when does 4 out of 12 = "ALL"?
And how exactly are tabloids gaming Digg? I have no affiliation with the Dailymail what so ever, I just submit the odd story from their website which I think is intresting... - jayrok, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4It's an "exploding" pen. Thanks.
- jamesdew, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4Damn it I want the freedom to sell people products that may mame or injure them without fear of reprisal
- encore0518, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3dugg for making me laugh
- Disease, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3How else will I get my exploding pen? First it's my exploding pen then it'll be my whoppie cushion because some 7 year old somewhere tried eating it and nearly choked to death.
- Disease, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4Sensationalism ftw.
- jos22, on 08/14/2008, -3/+5especially if u got the *****
- iDiggYa, on 08/14/2008, -2/+4'One of the boys said "This is our pen - we can't get the lid off".
Did you even read the article? Two kids were playing a prank on Daniel Snelling, the child who was injured by the pen. - orias6891, on 08/14/2008, -1/+3Fail't.
- ElementCDN, on 08/14/2008, -1/+3Tom?
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -6/+8"They said Daniel had a blast injury as if he had been in a war and a hand grenade had gone off."
Yes, because a small cap is just as powerful as a hand grenade with high explosives in it - willyummy69, on 08/14/2008, -2/+4Sounds like they are over reacting just a bit.
- Manthem, on 08/14/2008, -3/+5More often than not, I read headlines like this, expecting The Onion, only to be surprised (is that the right word?) that it's the Daily Mail.
- shutaro, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2So... My exploding Toothbrush isn't such a good idea, then?
- encore0518, on 08/14/2008, -1/+3It's funny how people are surprised about these things. You give a little kid an exploding pen *of which he does not know explodes* , wtf do you expect to happen?
- f4nt0m4s, on 08/14/2008, -5/+7@cawpin
"Doctors fought to save his eyesight by neutralising the alkaline mixture of gunpowder and grit contained in the cap - described as being more dangerous than acid - and removing the particles with tweezers."
alkaline mixture of gunpowder and grit?
"The shop that sold the pen and its suppliers have been fined almost £8,000 in total after admitting supplying unsafe toys, including exploding packs of gum and lighters."
and the store owner even knew he was selling unsafe stuff.
***** yeah I think he should go out of business. How would you feel if a store was selling toys made with lead and your kid suffered lead poisoning? If the store owner is aware of selling unsafe *****, especially to 9 year olds, then they should take their business to China or something.
There are rules and regulations in the United States regarding quality control and sale of goods. What country are you from? - fredkreuger, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1That's what I said, booty traps!
- sysop073, on 08/14/2008, -2/+3This wasn't the kid's fault at all, it's a trick pen -- the people giving it to you don't tell you what it does. It's their fault for not stopping him when they saw him pointing it at his face as he took the cap off
- furntree, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1good think it only cost about 2 quid
- ostawookiee, on 08/14/2008, -1/+2and "EXPLODING"
and "Do not use within 36 cm of face" - darkjolt, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1What would anyone do with exploded pens?
- xister, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1So much for reading comprehension. Obviously the boys took it out of the package to give it to the kid.
FTA: His mother Angela, 37, who works in a toiletries shop, said: 'We were dropping my daughter off at a birthday party and two older boys gave him the pen.
'I was standing right next to him at the time. One of the boys said "This is our pen - we can't get the lid off".
You really think it was still in the package at the time? - sysop073, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1It would've been funny if two people hadn't beaten you to it by about a day
- jellygraph, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1See what happens when you have government regulation and a socialised system? Toys become dangerous and rarararararara.....!!!! oh wait... I think I might have said something dumb... government might actually be the solution here.
- trunk8, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1Hmmm, this kid must not have had a ruler handy.
