tm is holding - an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I think you missed the word "hidden".
He's not saying that they're not criminals, only that they are indiscreet. - sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Yes and no. To a villager, it's a huge amount of money. To these guys, it's just a nice payday. You can't perpetrate these crimes anywhere. You have to be in the big cities, and the big cities are expensive. And they have expense outlays too, time in the internet cafes where they work is expensive. Around $1 an hour, which adds up if you sit there day in and day out spamming people. Plus whatever they have to spend on the scam itself.
- sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I've seen the internet cafes just full of these guys. It's their 9-5 job. These aren't exactly hidden criminals. Just go to any big city in Nigeria (or in my case Benin) and go to neighborhood cybercafe
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Dear Innocent Okacavie.
I am sad to hear of the loss of granddad. This will be a great loss to the Okachavie family, please tell me more about your proposal, as I have just come into a large sum of money, and I am willing to help out the Okachavie family that helped me out so in the past.
Thank you, and I hope to hear from you soon

- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I only ever replied to one to invite him to GMail. Poor guy had some crappy webmail.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I responded to a nigerian scammer once (here are the actual unedited messages:
[his initial e-mail]
Compliments,
First, i want you to know that this transaction is 100% risk free and legal, i work with honesty/trust and fair dealing and i will make everything transparent to you in this transaction, i contacted you through this means because of my Government, after the death of my father, the Government in Nigeria has collected millions of dollars from my family and i don't want that to happen again. i want you to know that i have been desperately seaching for a foreign partner who can assist me without any problem in the future. i want this transaction to be very confidential at all times as i don't want anything that will jeopardise this transaction because right now my family are all hoping on this transaction as my Government has frozen all our local account and swiss bank accounts. you are the first and only person i have confided in as regards this transaction and i hope you will not betray my trust.
I want to inform you that the funds was shipped from my country in a consignment to a diplomatic agent in London, right now my consignment is in London with the diplomatic agent which i will disclose to you when we proceed, i want you to understand that it's the duty of the diplomatic agent in London to deliver my consignment to your location in your country. i want you to know that for me to make you my final beneficiary to receive my consignment from the diplomatic agent in London, i have to deposit my trust in you. I work with Honesty/Trust and fair dealing, that is our tradition, i want this transaction to be very confidential without my Government knowing any funds transfered by me.
Am fully depositing my trust in you by making you my final beneficiary to receive my consignment from the diplomatic agent in London, to make you my final beneficiary i will need the following information to instruct my attorney to prepare all required documents and change of ownership and forward to the diplomatic agent in London and a copy to you making you my final beneficiary to receive my consignment, i will need your full name, address, tel/fax number and any of your identity such as international passport or drivers ID scan and attach to my e-mail to prepare all required documents making you my final beneficiary to receive my consignment from the diplomatic agent in London, when we proceed i will send you my picture for you to know me properly, i want you to know that i want to invest the funds in Real Estate and Stock Exchange, you are entitle to 20% for acting as my final beneficiary to receive my consignment from the diplomatic agent in London, when i hear from you i will give you more details on how to proceed without any problem in the future.
You can reach me anytime with my tel number 234-8030-601-010.
I look forward in working with you as my partner and my beneficiary.
I await your response and call to proceed,
Sincerely,
Alhaji Mohammed Abacha.
This is my private yahoo account, reply me through this E-mail.
[my email]
Greetings Mohammed Abacha,
My name is General Whoar, part of the Swiss foriegn legion. Our
main headquarters; however, is located on Bryant Road in London; a
little known road off the famed Westminster bridge. Please, please,
contact me again so we can arrange this meeting. I am not able to give
you appropriate forms of I.D. because I am working strictly for the
Swiss Government, and are forbid by law to do so. I however, can
transfer this money through one of my Swiss Bank Accounts, which will be
perfect.
I wish to speek to you, in person soon. or atleast your "diplomatic
agent", who should be only a few blocks away from my current residence!
In the Swiss/Polish diplomacy on Bryant road. 812 Bryant road to be
exact. Isn't this a great coincidence?
Your friend and brother,
General Whoar.
He never wrote to me again.... - Starch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Q: Ever wonder what happens when you reply to the Nigerian scammers?
A: Profit????? - john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15i did this once and got $3000 worth of fake money orders out of it.. it was a truly entertaining experience.
- LilBoyLuver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I sold an iPod on ebay a few months ago and the guy who bought it was supposed to be from LA but had a son going to college in Nigeria and wanted to send him an iPod. He told me that it was to complicated for me to get the shipping label myself so he would provide it for me and still pay my shipping price. I felt like the whole thing was shady so I decided to look into it. Anyway I ended up taking a rock wrapping it up in a box and shipping it using his label... It felt good.
- PixieLittle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13God bless your eyes!
- aschocobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13one thing i don't understand about digg i why people are dugg down when they tell the truth. the guy lives there. he's giving his perspective. people here just assume that every single part of Africa is dirt poor. many parts are, but very few parts of certain countries aren't. whether you wan to believe him or not, he's calling it like he sees it...
- Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Now I know Ive read to many digg comments because I automatically read your post as

- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Just in case the 15 other replies didn't do it, he was trying to say they aren't hidden,
thank you, thank you - Damhna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@lilboyluver
It's a common enough ruse.
Typically you can expect that they will offer to pay you by check.
That check will be credited to your account before final clearance and , believing you have the cash in hand, you go ahead with the order. Then the stolen or forged check will get flagged and your bank will take the cash back. - RandomGuySteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10OMG HIDDEN OMG!
Sheesh this guy wasn't even worth 1 reply, yet we're pedantic enough to give him 6. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The best twist possible would be if he managed to scam the scammer out of some money.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@camzak
I suggest for you possibly reading the post you're replying to at least twice, since you seem to have a habit of missing words. - Gameflyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Call me on + 234 80 23770379 for oral discussions."

I've done it a few times myself and if you've got the time it's pretty entertaining. Every scammer you bait has less time for an innocent victim.
Things to watch out for are obviously never *ever* use ANY real details. If I get a scam mail to one of my proper accounts I just remove any reference to that account and reply using an anonymous Hotmail account.
Happy hunting. - thepompano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Does anyone have the picture the guy sent at the end? I guess the moderators removed the kicker!

Okay seriously, if a zombie is emailing you? It's probably smartest not to email him back. - ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't know...smells rather funny.
- graemee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Time is money, so the longer you engage them in meaningless emails the less time they have to scam someone who would send money.

In my present financial state and greatly waiting for my impending funds to presently clear from bank funds awarded to me, you please send me a cheque in the sum for US$500.00 to cover the cost of an international calling card, postage for international mailings, and I will reimburse you for US$3,500.00 once my funds clear and I will send by international carrier as soon as they become available in perhaps 2 or 3 weeks at the earliest.
Thank you, and I hope to hear from you soon

You guys have never seen this, did ya? http://www.thescambaiter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8970 - 99butcher99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6i always reply and I think everyone should. If everyone would reply there would just to too much mail to go through and the accounts would be shut off. If they got 20,000 replies instead of just 200 for every email the scams would all die.
