- Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Glass elevators + short skirts = good times
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Most malls are 2 at most 3 stories, big deal. I want to see a glass bottom elevator in the empire state building. Light up the shaft with some lights that cycle downward as you move upward so you feel like you are moving 10x as fast as you go up. Reverse the lights when going down and it will look like you are dropping 10x as fast.
- karn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Dead already...
http://duggmirror.com/offbeat_news/Elevator_Floor_Illusion/ - weprin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Bradl3y: Whoa there take a chill pill. Let's not start WW3 or anything here. Sheesh you'd think I called your mom a slut or something. /rolleyes
If people don't pay attention to using question marks or periods, how can you feel confident in trusting them to pay attention to the order of "it" and "is" in their sentences? - griz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Cool, but why not just put a glass bottom on the elevator, then it would look totally sick while you were in it.
- docbaily, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14This is a great idea.
- CedEx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14What would be funny is that if you already knew about this elevator, and you get a friend to wait for the elevator to arrive on the floor. Once it arrives, and the doors open, you push him in. Then the hilarity ensues, if only for a short moment.
- tutorbell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Because real elevators have tracks on the sides of the shaft that the car rides on.
- plunk0, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16"Looks to me like he is sitting o the railing."
Obviously the concept of optical illusion eludes you. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If I was in that as soon as the doors open id be screaming that the floors just dropped and be holding myself up by the railing like that guy is.
- Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12well, obviously they have to keep the floor spotless for the illusion to look the best
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ned Ryerson?
Bing!! - EternalDarkWing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9These are hosted on ImageShack. I used TinyURL because the ImageShack URLs were long.

http://tinyurl.com/rgnk9 - geekchic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There would probably be a market for someone to print that floor effect onto a very large poster and sell it in "joke shops".
I'd be tempted to buy one for the office on April Fools Day. - Drull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.snopes.com/photos/advertisements/smokingmural.asp
- Robboblob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@otto: True but his left foot is on the floor
- weprin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18Use punctuation next time, so we know whether you are trying to ask us a question or trying to make a statement.
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13"You mean, this isn't a pic of him standing of the floor? What article are you reading?"
Looks to me like he is sitting o the railing. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9It's not an optical illusion. He is sitting on the railing. Look at his right foot, you can see the sign behind it. That sign is on the back wall, not the floor.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I know, I know, totally off topic but it did remind me of a time I was in the CN tower in Toronto. I was dating a Canadian at the time (Canada has some serious hotties!) and was up there for some kind of big celebration they do with air shows, carnival rides, etc.
Anyway, up in the CN tower they have glass floors that look straight down and make the cars below look like ants. People like to lay on it and have pictures taken of themselves while doing so. Thanks to a few fine Canadian beers, I saw a some people laying on it (looked like asian tourists - spare the racism comments since it was NOT about that) getting their picture taken.....so I jumped up in the air and landed on it. Needless to say, the people laying on it nearly ***** their pants, I was the big American prick......and got no booty that night. It sure as hell seemed funny to me at the time but now ranks up there with my top ten stupid things I've done.
Live and learn. - weprin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wrong place.
- ollj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Interestringly the effectg even works on higher angles, when the fake-floow corners are barely parallel and with stereo vision, because that fails in dark grey blurry patterns.
A pirate midgets nightmare. - Rabid_Llama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Of course, the angle is totally wrong for the guy who's already in the elevator, looking all scared. It only looks real from outside.
- apothekari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Indiana Jones could walk right in there because he has faith.
Oh yeah and cuz his dad's shot and he needs the grail from the knight. - somnus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That is positively evil.
I love it ;) - Valleye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is this the space elevator we have been promised for so long?
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ashbrahma
I love that! Early Grave Time!!! - Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that would be great, a sound effect that sounds just like a cable breaking and whipping through a pulley.
- doubleyoube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Printed onto a clear plastic sheet, similar to OHP screens, you could have a carry arround hole-in-the-floor to scare the bum lumps out of your friends, haha. I want one!
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Obviously the railing isn't the illusion here. :-p
Funny thread :-) - robinw77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You can quite easily argue that the context of a sentence helps people to understand its meaning, and therefore spelling, punctuation and grammar aren't as important. Alternatively, there is the oposing argument that in this way, written language could degenerate to text-speak and beyond, to a series of illegible characters.
(Anyway, more importantly, the obfuscated characters I had to type to submit this, were nearly 'C3PO') - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 Or on their way to the bathroom.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They should have made the rest of the elevator look older to add to the effect. Also it'd be spiffy if they add sound effects as it's going between floors such as loose chains, popping, pulley screeching, etc ^_^
- tonyzahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've seen pictures of these sort of things done n the sidewalk, but the elevator is probably the best place for it as you know for sure that the viewer is going to be seeing it from the correct angle (ie, outside the elevator door).
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not dangerous - commonly done in Haunted houses. Plexiglass for the floor, one mirror at a 45 degree angle showing a "shaft", depending on how involved/complex one wants to get 1 or 2 more mirrors can be used. to make the gag look bottomless as opposed to just really deep.
- robinw77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks like you've the same work blocker as me. Half the things it blocks are work-related; the other half are images of lifts.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's painted mostly brown and black. Unless somebody walks in with a ton of dirt on their shoes, I doubt you'd scuff up the floor enough to make it noticable for quite a while.
- rhinohelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is just my guess, Schwaby, but I think it is to prevent him from tracking dirt onto the picture/floor and ruining the illusion, at least while it was new and they were photographing it.
- alicelml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow that was scary!! where is the lift actually located??
- jimmytango829, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I love that movie. w00t groundhog day. BING AGAIN!
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just don't do that to someone with a heart condition - unless that was what you intended!
- Schwaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm just wondering, but why isn't that guy in the photo wearing anything on his feet?
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5blocked at work. any images ?
- karuberutsu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Wow, very cool.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3"It's painted mostly brown and black. Unless somebody walks in with a ton of dirt on their shoes, I doubt you'd scuff up the floor enough to make it noticable for quite a while."
If you've ever owned a PSP or a Black DS Lite, you'd know that keeping something black and clean is nigh impossible. - robinw77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1That sheds new light on 'The Great Glass Elevator'. It certainly would be great.
- Fractl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6I like the idea...but when looking at something like this in 3-D the illusion isn't too impressive.
I'm sure there'd be a way to reproduce this bottomless pit illusion with a couple mirrors on the floor. That would be impressive! -
