- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -4/+224who cleans their gun while drunk....???
- jfdolier, on 11/18/2008, -11/+208I'm too sick to my stomach to even try and make a joke. I'm going to go hug my daughter right now...
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -4/+176might wanna put the gun down first
- squishee, on 11/18/2008, -1/+138The same type of guy who tells his 6-year old daughter to go bring his gun to him...
Seriously, this guy is ***** ridiculous. Hope his reckless ass goes to jail. - yomamaphat, on 11/18/2008, -0/+111Who cleans their gun while loaded is a better question. Even a drunk should have the sense to unload it.
- Zeitgeister, on 11/18/2008, -0/+105don't know how you'd live with that
- legolas68, on 11/18/2008, -1/+98This man is an idiot for not checking the chamber before cleaning or handling the weapon. He is also an idiot for pointing the gun at anything he didn't intend to kill. It is the human, not the gun, that did this.
- screensnot, on 11/18/2008, -0/+86Nobody cleans their gun while drunk.
"I was cleaning my gun, and it just went off!" sounds better than "I was practicing my quick draw."
I'd guess that 99% of the 'cleaning my gun' accidents had no cleaning involved. The way I learned it, the first step to cleaning your gun is to unload it. - jon31rm, on 11/18/2008, -5/+78Dumb people. Simple as that.
The alcohol didn't get drunk by itself, just as the gun didn't pull its own trigger.
Don't blame inanimate objects for things like this. - jojopumpkin, on 11/18/2008, -7/+72"Peters told police he had asked his daughter to bring his Colt .45-caliber pistol from his room."
He asked a 6 year old to go get him his Colt .45? Sounds like it wasn't kept in a safe place away from the kids. Seems to me the child found it and accidentally shot herself while Daddy was drunk and Daddy is trying to cover his ass.
I don't own a gun but things like this among others are going to cause some friction for gun rights. The media seems to be hot on gun stories right now and they aren't putting them in a favorable light. I'm going to guess the Second Amendment will be up for serious discussion within the next four years. - Samurai77, on 11/18/2008, -15/+80This guy needs to go to Jail for a long time and get beat daily, these asshats make responsible gun owners look bad. Typical knee jerk reactions call for gun bans and other such nonsense, just pisses me off.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+62Idiot! Always unload guns before cleaning them! It wouldn't hurt to be SOBER at the time as well!
- snea, on 11/18/2008, -6/+65Yea but if he had D&D miniatures and he was cleaning them he probably wouldn't have had a daughter in the first place since he never would have even touched a woman.
- rrife, on 11/18/2008, -3/+55Never too soon for Digg.
- praha, on 11/18/2008, -3/+51I'm betting he and his wife will live with it by having many more double-vodkas.
- colinmhayes, on 11/18/2008, -4/+51I'll just go home and hug my condoms and my girlfriend's birth control pills.
- mongo22, on 11/18/2008, -2/+38Wow, terrible.
- keepinithamsta, on 11/18/2008, -0/+36Always check for a round in the chamber, and even then treat it as if it's loaded..
- LastDitchHero, on 11/18/2008, -9/+44Their is no accidental shooting. That would be like saying drunk driver accidentally kills people. He was reckless. Very reckless.
- cquinnd, on 11/18/2008, -14/+47Don't blame the gun, it could have just as easily been a car or some other device that should not have been handled while ones ability is severely impaired.
- Grym11, on 11/18/2008, -0/+32I couldn't agree more. Unloading is a prerequisite for cleaning, if only because unloading is required to get to the dirtiest part of the gun, the breach. Furthermore, actually cleaning a gun involves disassembling it past the point where it cannot fire even if it were loaded.
The "gun cleaning accident"-excuse only sounds reasonable to people who don't own or actually clean guns.
Bottom line: As a gun owner, I don't believe this was an accident. This man should go to jail for murder. - DiggExchange, on 11/18/2008, -1/+33Alcohol is not responsible for this tragedy.
The person who had alcohol, has lost control over himself.
So, what matters is control.
Control over self. - Monkiest, on 11/18/2008, -2/+31Lesson learned: never comine alcohol with guns and innocent bystanders. In fact never combine idiots with guns, it's much simpler.
- latexsolarbeef, on 11/18/2008, -3/+30and therefore more children they can accidentally shoot
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -5/+32Yup, and we need cleaning products too, even if some kids die from drinking it.
- jon31rm, on 11/18/2008, -15/+41Yes.
- zzhiwen, on 11/18/2008, -1/+26Cleaning a loaded gun is one of the dumbest things I can think of doing.
- shaughn13, on 11/18/2008, -0/+25How is that covering his ass? Either the daughter shot herself and HE is to blame or HE shot the daughter and HE is to blame!
- Wargala, on 11/18/2008, -7/+29The Second Amendment won't be up for discussion simply because A) It's a Constitutional right. and B) The Supreme Court has already said gun ownership is an individual right.
So gun control advocates: Suck it. - 919kwjc, on 11/18/2008, -0/+21The current laws are enough. You can't legislate an end to stupidity.
- rancemo, on 11/18/2008, -12/+33An armed public slows the growth of tyranny. Government must fear their masters.
- pathouston22, on 11/18/2008, -2/+22So don't own cars either since they kill too?
- ohearn, on 11/18/2008, -0/+19This is why I have always thought that a decent gun safety course should be required to get a permit to buy one. I don't really care what type of guns you want to own, as long as you know how to operate and care for them safely and aren't mentally unstable or a known criminal.
/Don't personally own a gun, but was raised an army brat and grew up knowning how to properly handle a weapon and to RESPECT it. - BrettFromTibet, on 11/18/2008, -33/+51Alcohol sucks. Makes people do bad things.
- elo91, on 11/18/2008, -9/+27and some stupid drunk redneck creates more fodder for liberal anti-gun activists. i hate to tell you, but idiots like this are not reflective of the overall gun owning population. he could have just as easily killed his daughter by taking her somewhere in the car while he was drunk, so don't blame the gun, blame the parent.
- imasuperDOTcom, on 11/18/2008, -7/+24Too soon?
- treed, on 11/18/2008, -4/+21Iraqis and Afghanis don't seem to be having all that much of a hard time.
- voodoochild461, on 11/18/2008, -1/+18This is one of the reasons the term "safe and clear" was coined.
Here's to those of us who check our guns every time we pick them up. - krellor, on 11/18/2008, -1/+18For all the times I've cleaned my guns, I've never once thought to myself "yeah, this is how I could end up shooting myself/someone else". Never. If you have a gun for self defense, then treat it special, take it outside to unload, bring it back in, and clean. For all other guns that are not for possible break ins, keep a trigger lock on it and keep it unloaded. If it's a pistol keep the slide back and the magazine out. Shotgun, leave the fore end pumped back so you can visually see the empty chamber. Always make sure you can easily see if the gun is loaded or not. This is less the alcohols fault, and more the fault of an irresponsible gun owner. Pisses me off. Should have his guns taken away if he isn't responsible enough to safe guard his own family from mis-use.
- AngryAngryBrian, on 11/18/2008, -0/+16Thats stupid. My dad hunted every year when I was young and he cleaned his guns while me and my younger brother were in the house. He was never drunk when he did it, he never kept his guns loaded unless he was in the woods, and when he did clean them he did it in his room away from us.
Hell I had a BB Gun when I was about 8. Never shot anything that wasn't a can or a pizza box. Gun ownership is about responsibility and respect at any age. He wasn't cleaning his gun he was playing with it and it went off. He is trying to dodge a longer sentence with an easily faked story. - AndrewMoyer, on 11/18/2008, -1/+16I think it's unfair to give him so much credit though. He could have just as easily done this sober.
Who cleans their guns with kids around? Who cleans a loaded gun? Who lets a kid get anywhere near the business end of a gun? There were a lot of epic failures there which probably weren't all due to intoxication.
I'd bet the guy was just an irresponsible, reckless dick all around, drunk or not. He deserves what he gets, and it's a shame his kid had to share that with him. - inactive, on 11/18/2008, -6/+21I always thought an IQ test should be required to get a gun permit.
Anything under 110 gets a spork.
It's just fair for the rest of us. - inactive, on 11/18/2008, -2/+17I'm so sick to my stomach I'm going to hug your daughter right now too
- oldhick, on 11/18/2008, -9/+24How can a gun be any worse than a car, a knife, a plane, a motorcycle?
Things are NOT intrinsically bad. He could have killed his daughter in many ways while drunk. Drunk being the key. - ninjadeathcult, on 11/18/2008, -3/+18hey lets get drunk and clean loaded guns..dick
- dok333, on 11/18/2008, -0/+15all gun cleaning accidents are from "unloaded" guns, anyone who cleans guns knows to unload it first, to get it clean you have to. It is when they are to inebriated or careless to properly clear the chamber is when someone gets shot
- AtomicTheory, on 11/18/2008, -0/+15... you're gonna hug the ***** outta jfdolier's daughter?
- imasuperDOTcom, on 11/18/2008, -4/+18You've been told incorrectly.
Americans use firearms to defend themselves from criminals at least 764,000 times a year.
This figure is the lowest among a group of 9 nationwide surveys done by organizations including Gallup and the Los Angeles Times.
1995 Fatal Accidents related to firearms:
1,400
For Children 14 and under:

In 1982, a survey of imprisoned criminals found that 34% of them had been "scared off, shot at, wounded or captured by an armed victim."
Washington D.C. enacted a virtual ban on handguns in 1976. Between 1976 and 1991, Washington D.C.'s homicide rate rose 200%, while the U.S. rate rose 12%.
