- macwisdom, on 11/11/2007, -16/+394Someone send this to those Japanese fishermen that harvest dolphins. If that fails start harvesting Japanese fishermen!
- BarbaraKolbe, on 11/13/2007, -30/+246Flipper and his friends to the rescue! Curious: how many digg readers have seen a Flipper episode? Thumb up if you have ;-)
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -4/+196beautiful intelligent creatures
- outofbeta, on 11/09/2007, -4/+165Again, no one ever gives Aquaman any credit. Who do you think sent those dolphins there?!
- Rossoneri22, on 11/09/2007, -5/+131Further proof that dolphins are badasses
- FloppyLlamaDigg, on 11/09/2007, -4/+120And all they ask in return is some of our fish.
- andyduncan, on 11/09/2007, -3/+95I, for one, welcome our new Dolphin overlords.
This is far from the first report of dolphins guarding swimmers/surfers/people in the water from sharks.
For some inexplicable reason, they appear to like us. Don't tell them about all crap we pour into their water, if they turn on us, we're *****. - slashbot, on 11/09/2007, -3/+90Simply awesome.
I wonder why the dolphins did that. As in what was the motivation. I know they would protect a member of their pod, but a stranger from another species? How did they know he was friendly. - glacialdrift, on 11/09/2007, -0/+85Perhaps we're on THEIR endagered species list?
- nova912, on 11/12/2007, -2/+75"Pod" is a registered trademark of Apple Inc.
These Dolphins better get a good lawyer! - bobbarkerbilly, on 11/09/2007, -5/+74One could argue that dolphins are more evolved than us. They seem to at least have the whole peace thing worked out.
- LordSkippy, on 11/09/2007, -0/+65"On the Planet Earth, Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than Dolphins because he had achieved so much: the wheel; New York; wars; and so on, whilst all the Dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the Dolphins believed that they were more intelligent than Man for precisely the same reasons."
- Douglas Adams - buckrogers1965, on 11/09/2007, -0/+64They think we are cute and adorable the way we thrash around in the water so clumsy.
- edial, on 11/09/2007, -5/+63I try to find an article where Japanese fishermen saved anyone, needless to say: I did not find what I was looking for.
- amoro99, on 11/09/2007, -6/+63They wanted careers at Sea World.
- aelias, on 11/09/2007, -0/+48They knew he was friendlier than the shark.
- Dysarthria, on 11/09/2007, -3/+49Great animals, great story.
- GemStar38, on 11/09/2007, -4/+47a nice feel-good story, you don't get many of those these days
- cnot3, on 11/09/2007, -6/+49Yes, much smart indeed. They probably have better grammar than you do!

- BoneheadFarker, on 11/09/2007, -0/+30It's technically not their fish, because they aren't from this planet, according to The Guide...
- gcnaddict, on 11/09/2007, -8/+37I see what you did there.
- guyincognitoo, on 11/09/2007, -0/+28Or they will just leave the planet.
- SAOSiN, on 11/10/2007, -6/+34you're a dick.
- RogaDanar, on 11/09/2007, -3/+30Hayden Panettiere for the win
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -2/+29I've always felt, the fact that they communicate through sonar possibly gives each transmission of speech a multitude of intelligence and reasoning that surpasses our primitive vocal frequencies.
Think about how long it takes to transmit a certain amount of information to another individual and how long it takes for said individual to process it. Now imagine burst-pulse sounds, sonar, etc. Who knows what was said, maybe it was just a dolphin dare. - o0adam0o, on 11/09/2007, -0/+25Whaaaa....did he thank the dolphins??? Can someone say life debt?
- ZenMojo, on 11/09/2007, -1/+25Why do humans save dolphins? It's widely known that dolphins are extremely empathetic creatures who chase boats and save castaways.
- SlipstreamLucas, on 11/09/2007, -0/+24so long, so long, so long, and thanks for all the fish.. !
- deflective, on 11/09/2007, -1/+24the day when a flock of chickens goes out of their way to save my life is the day i've enjoyed my last plate of wings.
- noumuon, on 11/09/2007, -0/+22because dolphins keep humans as pets... obviously
- lharrod, on 11/09/2007, -0/+21If you and a group of your friends were in the park, and you came across a dog attacking a kitten, you and your group might choose to intervene and save the kitten. But why? If you can figure that out, I think that would help explain the dolphins' motivation, too.
- Svengalus, on 11/09/2007, -1/+22There are two reasons why the dolphins helped out the surfer, they hate sharks and they felt bad for the guy.
- schrankage, on 11/09/2007, -1/+21Tell that to the cannibals.
- lazyfisherman, on 11/09/2007, -0/+19I don't know, the shark might get hurt.
- munkeyhatecleen, on 11/09/2007, -0/+19Maybe they just really hate sharks.
- nepawoods, on 11/09/2007, -0/+19 ... said the shark to the dolphins.
- Instaa, on 11/09/2007, -1/+18There can be no debate because it is clear, God created the dolphin in order to save surfers from sharks.
- staffa, on 11/09/2007, -3/+19There seems to be a thin line that seperates the you who believes that dolphins that save life are further evolved than us and the you who seems to be on the verge of picking up a gun and slaughtering as many random people as you can before taking your own life. The thing that is hard for me to understand is how is it that two things that are so far apart in their out look are seperated by such a thin line in the reality that is you.
I would also note that you use the word 'you' to describe all those responsible for the state of the world, when in reality you should use 'we/us/our' After all, you're using a computer to communicate your sentiment, there is no amount of legitimate rationalization that can seperate that from iPods, TiVo's etc, not to mention you clearly have a personal agenda as well. - DangerCollie, on 11/09/2007, -3/+18I was going to suggest giving the Japanese fishermen a knife and tossing them in the water with a Great White. That would be a creature more on their level of intelligence and a lot fairer fight.
- Arramol, on 11/09/2007, -0/+15Wondered how long it'd be before that quote cropped up...
- drizzlelicious, on 11/09/2007, -0/+15Does that mean thumb down if I havent? ;-)
- BinaryDelt, on 11/09/2007, -0/+15I don't know how anyone couldn't digg this. Dolphins freaking rule. Monkeys of the sea.
- TheNik, on 11/13/2007, -1/+16The two repliers before me are really, really oblivious to H2G2. Read more, duh.
- CraigJ, on 11/09/2007, -0/+14***** all you gun toting hip gansta wannabees...
- cnot3, on 11/09/2007, -0/+14What if that surfer grows up to be the next adolf hitler... those dolphins broke the Prime Directive.
- kiwiboyus, on 11/09/2007, -0/+13To answer the question last week in that other Dolphin story, this is why people care abut Dolphins more than certain other animals. It's not just that they are not ugly, they have actually saved peoples lives by their own choice. They had nothing to gain from stopping that Shark but they did it anyway. Leading by example. Dugg.
- kageki, on 11/09/2007, -0/+13Hasn't there been cases where dolphins save people even when not around sharks?
