- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+85I'm a cat person myself. Most cats can and will escape from a burning building, although the cat might have been trapped. Regardless, this dog was a selfless hero.
Rest in peace. - portis, on 10/12/2007, -20/+98Poor doggy. May he find unlimited doggy treats where he's going.
Damn cats. - LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -4/+65I haven't trained Stephen Hawking to fetch my beer either, but he's still smarter than my dog.
- zerocomm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+58that was really sad.
- alexp2ad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55Yeah... I name it unofficial Digg Dogg of the Year!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+57If anyone needs proof that the age/maturity level of the average Digg member is somewhere south of 14, you need look no further than the fact that EVERY story needs to be turned into a juvenile X vs. Y flame war.
Wii vs. PS3, Apple vs Microsoft, and now dogs vs cats?
Grow up kids. Just because YOU like something more does not mean it is better. Opinions are like *****. And digg is full of a bunch of ***** opinions!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+47^^^
Wow, a person without one... :0 - SharkJumper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33@lava
demonstrable achievements:
1) Start fire
2) Trick dog
May not prove they are smarter, just more evil. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34By the way...the STUPID creature in this story is the woman for having candles so close to flammable material in aplace where she could not easily get to with her handicap.
ESPECIALLY with a cat around.
It is highly unlikely that this was the FIRST time the cat has jumped onto that table. Therefore, she should have known better than to light a ***** candle, and put it somewhere where she couldn't easily get to it in case of accident. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+41"Dogs>Cats=True. It's not a matter of opinion. When was the last time you trained your ***** cat to lead the blind? or to look for drugs? or to attack intruders? or to fetch you a beer? or to etc.. etc... etc.."
When was the last time you trained your dog to not stink, slobber, or ***** in the house if not taken out every few hours? I don't need a helper for the blind or something to sniff out drugs, I just need a pet I can safely leave in the house for a few days if I go out for the weekend.
Plus my cat doesn't keep trying to get into the trash. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+38Again..you dumb *****...it sure as ***** was not the cat's fault. The woman should not have had the candle so far out of reach in the first place. Do you honestly think that this was hte FIRST time the cat ever jumped on the table? The woman ***** up.
MY god...PLEASE tell me you are not suggesting you are any better than me because you like dogs. Oh noes! You called me a cat lover! How will I survive!
Just go to high school and go away. Really. - jofes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26A special honor in the land beyond. A real hero!
- sansculottes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24@lava
Because animals have no reason to exist other than serving humans, of course. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25lava: Cats behave differently, why does that make dogs better? Cats are stubborn and won't just do what you tell them to do, but they can also be loving. They don't give unconditional love like dogs do. The common perception is that cats are stupid - they aren't. In fact, I believe cats are more intelligent than dogs are, but you're right that you can't just train them to do stuff for you on-demand (but they *can* be trained... watch some of the videos on youtube)
I love cats and dogs, though I'd only keep cats as pets. They are independant, but are there when you need them. I can't dedicate the time a dog needs for maintenance, I wish I could though, I'd love to have a labrador. - xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20"And he jumped onto a table that had a candle on it and tipped it over and lighted the artificial plants on fire," she said.
This is sad.
Might be a good idea not to leave candles if the person is not capable of putting the fire out.
The great dog shouldn't have died for that. - LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20My point was trainability is no measure of capacity.
- netferret, on 10/12/2007, -14/+28I guess cats will always be pussies.
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18The question is, will this be the most doggedly Dugg Digg Dog of Dogs Diggers Dugg to date?
And will it, on that note prove to be the most alliterative story of all time?
Perhaps. Unfortunately, no one Dugg Dig Dug for Xbox360, dog of a game that it was. So I don't see where else a story such as this might come from. - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13My cat starts fires all the time, I once caught him red handed with a lighter to my mattress. Should have known better than to give a cat access to a flame.
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14You think he went back for scooby snacks?!?~
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14you're both silly, but i agree with lakawak more. Even if someone did have a perfectly valid view about cats, and was to defend earths cutest creature against all of this bashing, you'd be lucky to escape without being dugg down to the depths of hell for having an opinion.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19Fighting on the internet is like the special olympics
Even if you win you're still retarded - Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13If you'd have read the first nine words of this article Jasgeo, you'd realize it was the cat that started the fire.
- Fluidity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Exactly, if she wants to play with fire, don't blame the cat when she gets burnt. Naked flames and pets do not mix!
- Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24But but but dogs are so crazy and funnywunnybuhbuhbuuuhhhh... *ahem* ...sorry.. i just like dogs... crazy hyper dogs.... Woof..... .... ..*leaves*
- TheKrillr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Actually, a well-trained dog would easily have the strength to drag a human being. It just depends on the breed. Retrievers were bred for that sort of thing, as were dobermans and other attack dog and hunting dog breeds.
I know my 50 lbs. springer spaniel can drag me around.... try playing tug of war with him ;-)
I'm 200 lbs btw,. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Parasocks: So basically, having a pet is just a powertrip thing for you? That's fair enough, but that's not the reason I have a pet.
P.S. My cat comes to me when I call her, because she loves my attention. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Neither is cuter nor smarter in my opinion.
There are some very ugly cats, and some very ugly dogs, as well as some very cute cats, and very cute dogs. Some cats are very intelligent, some dogs are very intelligent, some cats are pretty stupid, and my dog is about as stupid as an animal can get. (I swear only three things go through that dogs head, "Food", "Sleep", and "Attention".)
People are the same, there are some damn ugly people, and some damn cute people. There are VERY stupid people (who far too often post here) and some VERY intelligent people. - archiesteel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10From the Straight Dope link: "Obedience and trainability aren't considered reliable measures of intelligence."
All that I know is that, when there's no one in the house, the dog follows the cat around - i.e. the cat's above the dog in the dog's own hierarchy.
Dogs are not more intelligent, they just have been domesticated for a much longer time (around 15,000 years vs. 5,000 years for cats). - kpearce, on 10/12/2007, -21/+27damn cat
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7agreed! I'd had half a thought of starting a fund to replace her dog ... but is she worthy of another one?
- spootmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So that cat's plan worked......it finally killed the dog.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/01/02/national/a014307S88.DTL&type=bondage - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+22My dog will wake up out of a deep sleep and come to me if I call him, my cat will only come if he thinks I have food for him. Nuff said.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Lol, fanboy wars... over animals.
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5From TFA:
"She got me outside and then she heard the cat upstairs and she went up there to get the cat and she wouldn't come back to me"
At least in the owner's opinion, the dog went back because they heard the cat make a noise. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's a seriously bad idea to use candles around cats, because they jump all over stuff. I don't blame the cat so much as the owner.
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have two cats and a dog, we have a total of four cats and two dogs in the house. Love both species equally, each has its own set of interesting traits, but I can't ever see one of the cats saving me from a fire.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wow. How many cats would do that for a dog?
Anyone here know of any cat rescue stories? I think at one point, I remember something about someone's cat (or possibly a small dog) being trained to dial 911, but I don't remember that so clearly. - tehbishop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@abadincrotch:
your dogs are probably just weak. It's ok, not everyone can have strong dogs - and you don't have to dog TheKrillr out just because he's got a strong dog yanno? - GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why do so many people on Digg like to point out that they have difficulty reading?
Is that why nobody has noticed the extra g in the name of the site? - TheKrillr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well, cats are much harder to train and their bodies aren't built for labor. Their personalities don't match up to the responsibilities either.
But there have been instances where cats have saved puppies and the like from disasters. Or even taken on puppies as one of their own kittens. Quite humourous to see actually.
There have also been cases of dogs taking kittens on as one of their pups. Heh - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nah, I'll just block you.
- ramiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dogs worship their owners like if they were gods. Cats know better. :)
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Cat's generally don't bite off people's faces and kill small children.
- BleedingHollow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58 lives left, check.
- daimposter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's funny how most guys like dogs more than women when in fact it's cats that relate to men more often.
dogs are more like a wife. they are very dependent on their man/master, need alot of attention, need to be cared for, are expensive to maintain, love to listen, etc.
Cats are more like the husband stereotype. Cats are very independent, don't like to be told what to do, cost little to maintain, and are covered in their own saliva. - marksy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4dude, they dont have opposable thumbs, they cant... how could they? Tie a line of creeper to its tail? this, sir, is nonsense.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9How do we know the dog actually tried to save the cat and wasn't going back in the house for something else?
Still +1 for saving the owner. Dogs rock. -
