I actually wrote my girlfriend an email, complained to my friends online, and showed co-workers that ***** ad that says 'smarter than botox'. It shows the chick take off 40 years from a face cream. They should get their asses sued for false advertising.- andburn1, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1Unless it says "simulated imagery..."

- mattcoady, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7So does the left side and it still looks pretty blond.
- mattcoady, on 01/29/2008, -0/+15It's not a wrinkle cream. It's a back-in-time cream.
- bbardlbradd, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6It's really just a photoshop based cream... anyone can get it on the black market or pirate bay. I wouldn't recommend using it to make yourself look all old like that though... disturbing ftl.

- Fracture98, on 01/29/2008, -1/+119My biggest question is, "What useless marketing department thinks the Digg demographic is 80-year-old women shopping for wrinkle cream?"
- jonshipman, on 01/29/2008, -2/+32pipe up sonny! I needs me wrinkle creme!

- grimward, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Merripen, you're the reason why I read digg comments in the first place :D Whahaha, dugg for a comment better than the article!
- stalzdiggity, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8i saw that yesterday and stared at it for 5 minutes in disbelief
- bbardlbradd, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2As did I.
I actually had to page back to the front page of digg to witness this ad a second time...
- bbardlbradd, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2As did I.
- BigLLamasHouse, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8haha, i've seen this one before, what were they thinking? she looks like she drank half the wrong goblet from the Temple of Doom

- abooth413, on 01/29/2008, -6/+31. thanks for letting me know it's photoshopped.. i almost thought it was real!
2. why do people complain about ads that appear adjacent to the content you are trying to view? you don't even need adblock.. use free will - don't look at it.. don't click it. It is a miracle cure!
3. How many people protesting ads have sent Digg a check?
FYI - if Digg didn't generate revenue.. it wouldn't exist.- alex7575, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3One thing is to generate revenue, another one is to generate revenue no matter what it takes... We're facing the latter
- jhemperly, on 01/30/2008, -1/+7Why don't they just put this up...i'd be more likely to buy it just because i'd know they at least have a sense of humor...

- carpespasm, on 01/29/2008, -1/+289i'd unblock the ads if we could digg on them.
- Conwaysb0718, on 01/29/2008, -0/+104and we'd be doing the marketing team for xyz product a great service at the same time... so digg could charge even more for companies to advertise... you may be on to something my friend.
- rayraym0fucka, on 01/29/2008, -1/+33shoulda kept quiet and wrote that down and mailed it to yourself... then told kevin about it ;p

diggers should be able to dugg or bury ads so better ads can be put on the digg website- MagnumVP, on 01/29/2008, -1/+81If that was the case then you would only see ads for Ron Paul, Apple, adorable kittens, Anonymous, kewl things that are photoshopped, and reactions to 2 Girls 1 Cup.
- Enendar, on 01/29/2008, -0/+32Yeah but at least we would click on them instead of installing adblocker. When digg had google ads I'd actually look at them, now I just block the site because they're to annoying.
- Dokument, on 01/29/2008, -1/+25you can sell reactions to 2g1c? awesome
- devilwarriors, on 01/29/2008, -0/+16yeah but most of them are priceless
- KirbyMeister, on 01/29/2008, -0/+17Anonymous buys ads?
- JustFender, on 01/29/2008, -0/+17yep, of course they're just large white spaces 'cause they dont want to give any hint of identity
- Bamborzled, on 01/29/2008, -0/+13So let me guess... They just buy them for the lulz, right?
- ngmcs8203, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5I think it'd be more like we'd be seeing those Snorg Tee ads again.
- aywwts4, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5I miss the snorg girl. Digg just doesn't feel the same without her... I run adblock ever since she left.
Don't marketers get it? This 20-30 year old male tech demographic likes reading advertisements written on cute girl's chests. Hell If the snorg girl pimped vista I might suspiciously and subconciously stop thinking it is quite so terrible.
- aywwts4, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5I miss the snorg girl. Digg just doesn't feel the same without her... I run adblock ever since she left.
- octophobic, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3I am interested in the offerings of these adorable kittens. Please forward me brochure material immediately!
- EruLabs, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5agreed then, bring on the kittens held by Ron Paul sitting on a chair atop a wet-snorg-tee contest.
- MagnumVP, on 01/29/2008, -1/+81If that was the case then you would only see ads for Ron Paul, Apple, adorable kittens, Anonymous, kewl things that are photoshopped, and reactions to 2 Girls 1 Cup.
- blackmage439, on 01/29/2008, -3/+43AdBlock FTW. Showing me ads is a privilege, and any site with reasonable ads gets to display them. However, anytime I see one of those disgusting Botox, anti-acne, iPod, or gawker artists ads with the ***** dude coming out of a dead guy's chest, I just block it. If I don't see it, I don't even care. Large white spaces where nasty ads used to be bring a smile to my face.
- cosmotic, on 01/29/2008, -6/+4FTW FTL
- Zaggynl, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3Hear hear, gtfo with your ads.
- EruLabs, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3You can set adblock to not keep the whitespaces... Reddit and digg actually look fairly well designed without all that crap.
- jdeuel, on 01/29/2008, -3/+2"AdBlock FTW. Showing me ads is a privilege,"
So I suppose YOU pay the digg serverbills? The sites you go to are a privliege, stop being a bitch.
- Lucas123, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7This type of advertising will only end when people become intelligent enough not to fall for it. In other words -- never.
- jtjdt, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4I would digg ads. That sounds like a good idea.
- carpespasm, on 01/29/2008, -1/+289i'd unblock the ads if we could digg on them.
- ggeorge2814, on 01/29/2008, -47/+12I posted a capture of this same ad, just a few minutes ago. That thing is ridiculous!

- BossKeyy, on 01/29/2008, -2/+23Let's not forget about those scoundrels who begin sentences with conjunctions, because we all know Digg comments should be written formally!

- sgtbutterscotch, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2people who* don't
- joegibes, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1We should lock up people who misuse hyphens.

- toekneebullard, on 01/29/2008, -7/+15Yeah, these kinds of ads should be illegal. And while were at it, so should other kinds of ads. And maybe certain books, and maybe certain unapproved writings....
/slippery slope- Orion682, on 01/29/2008, -4/+6There's a difference between a book, even a bad book, and an ad trying to sell you snakeoil...
- merripen, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9Ooh! That reminds me, I'm low on snake oil...
- toekneebullard, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3Yes, a big difference. But once you start banning stuff, it's hard to stop some people. See our wonderfully vague "obscenity" laws for a good example.
- Orion682, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Again, false advertising, ie, not giving what a person payed for, is NOT the same thing. I agree, and am very much against banning things, but someone doesn't buy the product for the sake of the product. A product is bought because of its intended effect. It's like buying a book with a pretty cover to read, and finding out all the pages are blank, even though the book jacket and back had descriptions of what the text would contain. It's NOT the same thing.
- qwickone, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3I don't think they should be illegal, but people should stop allowing them on their websites.
- Orion682, on 01/29/2008, -4/+6There's a difference between a book, even a bad book, and an ad trying to sell you snakeoil...
- TrevorBelmont, on 01/29/2008, -2/+5If you are old enough to be concerned about wrinkles and still aren't sharp enough to smell scam all over this then it's fine by me if people trick you out of your money.
- whistlerpro, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4I'm pretty sure a lie like that IS illegal.
- gtlogic, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1At first glance, it looked like an ad for Hydrochloric acid.
- biohazard2007, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0The acne ad is very good too.
- ours, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1They are in the UK. From what I understand, if you say in a add that you product is best, you have to prove it or you'll get a big fat fee.
- icecoldtrashcan, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1The ASA in the UK regulates adverts, and they are pretty stringent.
But I do object to companies using medical sounding names, for example "Biffudus Digestivum"

- nico623, on 01/29/2008, -2/+66I bet that cream that tightens your face ends up making people look like Clayface from Batman.
- Traiklin, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12I think that's what the ad is selling, not only does it get rid of wrinkles it changes your hair color and let's you drop 40 years off your age!
- merripen, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5And cures vampirism.
- ours, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2Maybe it's made of virgin maid's blood.

- merripen, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5And cures vampirism.
- jmaple4, on 01/29/2008, -1/+5I bet it makes you look like Clay Aiken, which is worse than Clayface. At least Clayface had a sex drive and didn't lie about his affinity for wet, brown holes...sorry, that came out gross. I think I just offended myself with that one.
- eshiki, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2just don't drink the stuff...
- MrJagil, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3Well of course... Who wouldn't want to look like Clayface?
- AzureRise, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1What do you think the chemical that made clayface clayface was? It was an early form of that.

Just trying to help out :)- spammishking, on 01/29/2008, -20/+13I'm hoping that at this point most diggers know about AB+, they are just too lazy to install it. Because at the end of the day I'll take laziness over ignorance.
- dggeek, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10I used to use Firefox and AB+, but due to new policies at work I can now only use IE. Something about techs not using technology that regular staff can't use.
- DemonWasp, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10Sweet jesus, how the devil are you going to write any kind of code?
- dggeek, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10I used to use Firefox and AB+, but due to new policies at work I can now only use IE. Something about techs not using technology that regular staff can't use.
- leftcoastfunk, on 01/29/2008, -13/+42I agree. Seriously people. Most of us have never even seen any of these crappy ads. Get FF and AB+ and quit whining if they bother you so much!
- teamr, on 01/29/2008, -7/+73Well, SOMEBODY has to look at the ads. If nobody did then what company would pay to put their ***** there? Digg doesn't run on dreams, you know
- gharding, on 01/29/2008, -2/+62No *****. It runs on unicorn farts.
- kutateli, on 01/29/2008, -2/+14If they bring back the text ads, I would disable AB+ on Digg... but the ***** they advertise on here now is just ridiculous. I'd rather see this site go down than have it become another myspace.
- Darmichar, on 01/29/2008, -1/+12Digg was the *only* site that got a whitelisting in my adblocker when they had Google's text ads here. They were unobtrusive and I felt it was helping Digg out by occasionally clicking one that genuinely piqued my interest. They got blacklisted again immediately after switching to the current ads.
Seeing stuff like this just makes me glad I don't get it shoved down my throat on a daily basis. - davewashere, on 01/29/2008, -1/+18You make a good point. I don't want to sound like a snob (although I most certainly will), but I would think Digg users would be "above" this type of advertising. These ads are just not a good fit for a site that consists mostly of geeks. Advertisers usually target their audience better than this. For instance, ever notice how the target audience for TV commericials during Wheel of Fortune is borderline-retarded people, with products like Head On and "financial services" like J.G. Wentworth ("Got an annuity? We'll give you money NOW!")? How many Diggers are so concerned about wrinkles that they are going to fall for an ad like this?
- Darmichar, on 01/29/2008, -1/+12Digg was the *only* site that got a whitelisting in my adblocker when they had Google's text ads here. They were unobtrusive and I felt it was helping Digg out by occasionally clicking one that genuinely piqued my interest. They got blacklisted again immediately after switching to the current ads.
- ConceptJunkie, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2If nobody looks at the ads, Digg has a flawed business model. Given the ads it does run (I unblocked them, but after seeing this one earlier today I'm _this_ close to APBing them again), I don't see how they can make any money. Most of the ads on Digg are stupid and I never see anything I would actually consider clicking on.
- condormcs, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1but diggnation does!
- themoose, on 01/29/2008, -2/+19If you're on Opera, right click > adblock.
- Audacitor, on 01/29/2008, -1/+4Opera has adblock functionality preinstalled? Now there's something FF doesn't have.
- SgtBlue, on 01/29/2008, -1/+3Yay for unnecessary bloat. Why build a feature in when you can have extension developers create it for you (with multiple implementations of the same idea, in some cases) such that it can be easily incorporated with the browser and updated frequently (like, not just when the browser is updated) but still isn't filling up the computers that don't care to use it?
Oops, did I make sense there? Can't have that.- antifreeze11, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2and yet Opera uses a quarter of the memory firefox does during normal usage.

Nice, I've been wondering if there's something out there like Adblock Plus for Safari (I hope this is a Mac version, and I wished I didn't have to hope something as silly). Thanks!

- digitalarcanum, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5flashblock also helps with the annoying flash-based ads as well.
- Hyperion1144, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I've found that the latest version of Scriptblocker overlaps Flashblock's functionality, plus does way more than Flashblock. I used to run them both, but with the latest additions to Scriptblocker, I just run it to block flash animations. Flashblock is still installed, but I currently have it turned off.
AdBlock + FIltersetG + Scriptblocker + Nuke Anything FTW.

- GuacamoleSan, on 01/29/2008, -11/+5AB+ is great. I hope this makes companies stop advertising on the net.
- gharding, on 01/29/2008, -4/+15So you'd rather pay for Digg than see an ad? If someone wants to pay for me to see some fake wrinkley bitch, I'll take that over paying for myself any day.
- nlight, on 01/29/2008, -0/+11So you'd rather see an ad than pay for Digg?
- Hyperion1144, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1I am perfectly happy to internalize the gains while externalizing the losses in this case: Let the IE using sheeple pay for everything by looking at (and presumably clicking on) the ads. I did the extra work to find out HOW to block ads, so I get the benefits of that work. Wanna be lazy and dumb, and take whatever someone else puts in front of you (IE)? Fine, you get what you deserve, sheeple.
Ignorance + laziness = FAIL.
- gharding, on 01/29/2008, -4/+15So you'd rather pay for Digg than see an ad? If someone wants to pay for me to see some fake wrinkley bitch, I'll take that over paying for myself any day.
- bjs3171, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11i don't think this is a comment on the fact that he had to see the ad, just on what the ad is claiming, and the absurdity of it.
- bbjr, on 01/29/2008, -5/+6I love Adblock Plus. I was elated when IE7Pro came out and had the same functionality for Internet Explorer users. I know that sites require ad revenue, but there comes a point where they annoy users or gross them out to the point that we just bypass them. I was waiting for something to happen at work on another computer, so I hopped on Digg to be grossed out by some nasty zits. Non-obtrusive text based Google Ads still show up with the ad blockers running, as they are harder to block, but I don't mind and even click them because they're usually pertinent. I don't know why Digg doesn't just adopt them.
- betterth, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Haha you get dugg down for using IE. Can't believe you'd admit that on Digg :P

- techlyc, on 01/29/2008, -3/+11I've been using AB+ for almost a year now. I had no idea Digg had advertisements. Dugg!
- reginaldino, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3ditto. i love my ab+
- undershirt, on 01/29/2008, -2/+4Don't worry about getting buried. It's people like you who coaxed me into using firefox, for the sole reason of blocking ads. Tell everyone!
- bxblox, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8I think most of us already have ad blindness, so I dont mind letting a site get a few cents that cost me nothing if im looking at their content...
- negativenancy, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11I previously used to refuse to use Adblock on Digg because of revenue issues, etc. I wanted to support the site.
However, this was primarily because the ads were non-intrusive and sometimes useful. Now, however, is completely different. These ads are just getting worse and worse, and I'll probably have to install adblock in the near future. - ChrisWalkr, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1Or just edit the host file is your really hardcore.
- koick, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5Yes, also replace your hosts file with this one: http://everythingisnt.com/hosts This cuts down on a massive amount of ads in itself. By the way, your hosts file is usually at (Winblows): C:windows/system32/drivers/etc and (Mac/Linux): /etc/
- TrevorBelmont, on 01/29/2008, -9/+1I run Firefox because it has AB+ but it's hardly an elegant solution. While trumpeting it's virtues, people never mention that FF is buggy and that it won't even display certain websites.

- jaimeshm, on 01/29/2008, -2/+4Encouraging people to use AB+ is not a good idea as it means that the websites you love wont get as much money and could lead them to lose out, meaning you'll loose out. As a web developer, I don't encourage the use of AB+, but do use it myself. However, I turn it off for websites such as digg.com and other smaller websites that could really do with the cash, and really deserve it. Its a great tool, just keep quiet about it!
- tito13kfm, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2did you just call digg a small website that needs cash?
- Shootfast, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I've known about ABP for a while, and only those ads yesterday convinced me to reinstall it. Thank god for ABP
- crawf061, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Please be a responsible Adblock user. It may be hard, but please refrain from the "What ads? :D" comments. Using adblock does not make you some power user.

- spammishking, on 01/29/2008, -20/+13I'm hoping that at this point most diggers know about AB+, they are just too lazy to install it. Because at the end of the day I'll take laziness over ignorance.

- m1ss1ontomars, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Yeah it's been changed. I dunno why you're being dugg down, this could become a real problem. - BZKyle, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Yeah. I submitted it, but then thought digg might not want profanity in the thumbnail, so I changed the image on my server, I figured the thumbnail would change, too...

Bottom line to advertisers: Make the ads relevant to your product and make them far less annoying, maybe then I will give them a look and not just completely block out and ignore them as I have built up an immunity to.

- dood, on 01/29/2008, -1/+20It's one thing to have generic every day ads, but this ad is particularly insulting. This company expects us to believe that they have a magic cream that can remove all wrinkles. Digg might as well have penis enlargement pill ads. It's all the same thing: 100% *****.
I usually only block ads if they are offensive or annoying, because at that point I can safely assume that the site's owner does not care one way or another about the quality of their site. Not to be melodramatic about it, but with this and the zit one, I am awfully close to hitting the ABP here.- tito13kfm, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2You mean I wasted $59.99 on those pills I just ordered??!?!

- reverland, on 01/29/2008, -1/+16I don't mind viewing ads for sites that I like, I just wish Digg took the view that Penny Arcade has. They just don't advertise anything on their site, they advertise what they like and what they believe in.
I have been seeing those pictures for weeks on Digg and was hoping it would make it to the front page one day. The advertising is horrible. If it were a great product the least they could do is use real people. Not take someone that is 20 and make them look 80 and pretend that their product makes that person look 20 again. If there was a product that could do that they wouldn't need to advertise on Digg that's for sure - ipwnedin1928, on 01/29/2008, -4/+2YOU'RE THE MAN NOW DOG! YOU'RE THE MAN NOW DOG!
