      • TomFrost, on 04/19/2008, -0/+30You can still cheat! Turn one side of the cube 45º so the corners are sticking out. Now press one of the corners up away from the cube as hard as you can. It'll feel like it's breaking, but keep pressing -- it's not. As soon as that corner pops off, the rest of the pieces will loosen up and come apart too. Now you can snap everything back into place, solved!

        Note that it IS possible to put the cube back together in an unsolvable position. That's never fun, but can be hilarious when you know someone who can actually solve the things fairly readily.

        And as a side note, setting aside an hour or so one night for Google can teach you how to solve them yourself without such methods ;-) It's actually pretty easy when you know how!

          Though you can usually figure out one's been switched pretty quickly, as soon as you get to that layer (or whatever other method you're doing) and realize that it can't line up.

It's just stupid to take the stickers of and put them back on, because you ruin the stickers and it takes a hell of a lot longer than just solving the cube normally. Also, EVERY single time I take a rubik's cube someone tells me they just take the stickers off. It stops being funny really quickly.

It's just something most people don't know anything about, whose soul purpose is to impress people or give nerds something fun to do. The math behind the cubes can be fun, but to be honest, it's not challenging enough. Memorizing the "algorithms" can take some time, but that's about it.
