- dancpsu, on 10/12/2007, -16/+92Benefits of being an illegal:
1) 40% off income tax if you ever want to pay them in the first place
2) Front of the line treatment when applying to colleges
3) Free medical care
4) No ID means no government tracking of your activities, legal or illegal
5) No expensive vehicle licensing fees or insurance
6) No proof of income means welfare at any income level - zwolfe12, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44The author of this letter is using satire obviously to make his point. If you can't get that than keep your comments to your self. He makes a good point no matter what his adjenda is. The author of this letter was not bashing illegal aliens or Mexicans or any other group of people. He's making the point that people who enter this country illegaly are getting preferencial treatment. They don't have any civic responsibilities, but can take advantage of our system. The government that allows this at the taxpayer's expense is at fault. It doesn't matter really what ethnic group or nationality is taking advantage of this stupidity, it matters who the gullible ones are that are allowing it. So boo hoo all you race card users!!!
- WermerSkoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32"And if you ever get caught doing something illegal, you get deported or thrown into jail until they find out where to send you. Great reasoning."
I worked as a jailer at a police department in a city with a HUGE illegal community. I can tell you that what you said is not true. In most cases (unless they did something really, really bad), they were given a court date (which we knew they wouldn't come to) and let go -- because anything else, when dealing with an illegal, is a lot of trouble. Not saying it's the right course of action -- just saying what you said is not accurate. - thotpoizn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33So, if you renounced your citizenship, and then the INS caught you - like, where would you get deported to? *grin*

Actually, local law enforcement is highly discouraged from reporting illegals that have broken the law:
From the Washington Times:
"The Friends of Immigration Law Enforcement (FILE), also based in the District, has begun to bring lawsuits against those municipalities with sanctuary ordinances and has promised additional legal challenges.
FILE has argued that state and county governments are prohibited from adopting policies that prevent its employees from contacting federal immigration authorities about the legal status of any noncitizen or to report violations of U.S. immigration law by any noncitizen.
"These policies, called 'sanctuary policies,' promise foreign nationals who have broken our laws that the municipality in which they live will help them in their lawbreaking by resisting efforts to report them to the proper authorities," FILE said in a statement. " - brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -15/+33And if you ever get caught doing something illegal, you get deported or thrown into jail until they find out where to send you. Great reasoning.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19come to miami where you're hated on by latins for being white
< - bitter - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29I don't know about you but illegals where I live only work 2 days a week, they rotate, one group of family member works monday and tuesday, another wednesday-thursday and so on
- spjmm0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18wrong thumb again! Must learn colors. He is not a racist, he is someone who is tired of paying for services for those unwilling to become legal residents of this country before moving here. he is not singling out one race or religius sect. He does not admin being superior
racist
a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others
discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion - treed, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Indeed. Around here they get paid 8-10 dollars an hour. I doubt they're working 80 hours a week at those wages.
- rationalicthus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12And I think you're a moron. Racism is the intentional mistreatment of a racial group. US Immigration policy is the set of laws that control who can and cannot enter the United States. There is a distinction between the two concepts.
I can say that I think we should limit who can and cannot enter the US without being racist.
Get it? - cougar618, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I believe you have to have a citizenship at another country before you can do that, if i remember my 11th grade history correctly.
- anguijm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah but the govt. doesn't want you to renounce your citizenship. The US is one of only a few countries that tax their citizens while working and living abroad. Since they still want your tax money they will try to fine and penalize you for giving up your citizenship.
Read this guys article about when he gave up his citizenship to become Japanese.
http://www.debito.org/naturalization2.html - anguijm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11OK well the the first step in their civic responsibility is to return to their home country and petition to immigrate LEGALLY! I was in the military and married a foreign national while I was overseas, if I have to follow all rules to bring my family to the states then so should they. Of course, I just decided to live in Japan when I separated so I had a bunch of other rules to follow.
One thing I will say is that the fees for immigration to the US are kind of high, while when I applied for my Japanese visa is was processed gratis by the Japanese consulate in Houston. Plus it was extremely easy to do. No interview, just one phone call, my application with appropriate paperwork, and a SASE. On the flip side, immigrating to the US is quite the pain in the ass, with medical and criminal background checks plus an interview. Not saying it should be easier, just saying it is difficult. But then that's the price you gotta pay to be legal.
PS. My father was born in Mexico city and immigrated legally. If that guy can do it then so can everyone else. - zwolfe12, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Well, because the amount of people that want to come to this country is excessive. There are logistic problems with just letting everyone in that wants to come. The recent riots accross France were due to liberal imigration policy. They just let all the muslim people who wanted to come become citizens. Because of the amount of people immigrating to France, the immigrants ended up being segregated from the rest of the population, still could not find work but could not speak the national language. Pretty much the same problems you have with massive illegal immigration. These things need to be controlled to be practical.
- ddales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You actually have to be physically located in a non-US country or territory. And even then you can get refused. Also, it is non-retractable. Once you give it up you aint gettin it back so you better be positive it's what you want.
http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_776.html - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12If only we were all illegal immigrants, this country would really shine! I never realized how fat, stupid, and lazy I was until all these go-getters from foreign ***** countries that can't even get their own crappy economy out of mud hut status showed me better.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -17/+26And you get to make $5/hour locked up in a walmart overnight. Gee, i wish i could be illegal.
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24I'm a mexican in Mexico and sadly I know your kind of gringo. When you come here on your spring breaks you pile up in the less interesting places of the country which are specifically designed to resemble the US so they attract you and contain you so you're not wandering and polluting everywhere. Your kind behaves ridiculosuly while people laugh at your back everywhere yet stupidly you feel respected because you have 20 miserable pesos.
Gladly the majority of US citizens I know are nice, intelligent and interesting, unlike you. - batmanjr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9In all seriousness though there actually is a process in which you can just renounce your citizenship. I wouldn't advise it, but you can do it. Now maybe that has been stopped, but as of almost a decade ago, I know you could do it.
You can actually find some info about it by contacting the state department. - mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Finally, people I can relate to. I'm a nice person, I don't care if your white, black, mexican, mix, whatever, I will still give you the same respect. In fact, most of my friends are either african american, asian, or orange oompah loompahs.
It just seems though as if I'm hated more for being what I am than otherwise. I constantly hear slander like 'white trash' or 'cracker' and I haven't even offended anyone! I hear people refer to themselves and their friends as '*****' (or the like), but the minute a white guy says it (to fit in) he gets his teeth knocked in. They even call me the same name, it's like people don't even care about what it means.
Can't we all just get along? - rationalicthus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yes, I think I can draw that conclusion. During the Reagan amnesty in the 80's there were thousands who never signed up.
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Defending our nation's laws is now deemed 'redneck' and 'hateful'. The real racisits are the ones pushing for more illegals jumping the border and leeching off our system. How can you demand 'rights' if you aren't a citizen? We're going to have to draft an 'illegal' Constitution very soon here the way things are going.
- ajma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"So, if you renounced your citizenship, and then the INS caught you - like, where would you get deported to? *grin*"
Maybe they'd stick you on a raft and push you into international waters. - kgool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@mgainor those are big words you used there. After I look them up I have a feeling I'm gonna be pissed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@raindogmx
Americans are not "wandering and polluting everywhere" in Mexico. Your felllow countrymen are already doing that by themselves. I have been to Mexico City and its the most polluted place I have ever been too. The slums around the city look like a third world African Hell hole. - Duffy40, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I am still trying to Connect the Taxes comment with the racist conclusion, must be something I am missing here.......
- chetanw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I loved this article and I loved the comments even more. However, I'd like to make my poin in here as well because I've seen this ***** happen to a colleague from the office.
The most difficult category to belong to in the US is a non-resident LEGAL alien. Why, you ask? Because:
1. You don't get a drivers license if your visa has less than one year to go. Only God and the DMV knows why!!
2. Your drivers license expires on the same day as your visa. So if your visa extension takes more time than your current visa expiry, you're *****. You may have a car but you can't drive it.
3. You are deprived of all online services by the DMV. No online licence renewal for you.
4. If you have a visa extension available and you step out of the US, you have get your visa restamped on your passport.
5. Again, you must go to your HOME country for the restamping.
6. The US consulate provides visas by appointment only. In countries like China and India, the demand is so great that restamping takes months.
7. You pay taxes like everyone else, but there's no hope of you every getting your Social Security benefits in this life
8. Your spouse can work only if you are on specific visa types - otherwise tell them to sit at home.
9. And worst of all, most places you go, you are discriminiated against simply because everyone things you're illegal!!
10. Each law that is passed to prevent illegal immigration makes life more and more difficult for you - even through you're legal.
So I agree with the writer of the blog, go illegal. - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6come to miami and see how the latins are the most racially intolerant group of people down here.
its sad but simply looking around down here i know this is the end of the united states. the system is completely overwhelmed down here. police stop enforcing the laws being simply completely overwhelmed.
immigration is a really sore subject for me because after moving to miami it makes me sad to see what will eventually happen to san diego and los angeles. - prammy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What this guy fails to realize is that once the illegals have paid their partial back taxes and fine, they are expected to pay full taxes on all income afterward.
Personally I think that illegals who wish to become legal permanent residents should have to pay FULL taxes for all the years they have gained non taxed income. Maybe they can do it on a payment plan but the taxes should be paid.
Hell I know a few illegals who have VALID SSNs, they just overstayed their visas. But they paid their taxes in full since all the IRS looks for is a valid name to SSN mapping. - RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I love how the word "racist" gets thrown around. Please do continue. Soon it will lose its meaning & then we can get down to business.
- wakkow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6> consider how much of the social security taxes that illegal immigrants paid into the system has shored up the social security
You have a source to back that up? - invader, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13adjenda is an interesting way to spell 'agenda'... i kinda like it
- anguijm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Who said to keep them out? I agree let them apply for immigration status. No penalty for being here illegally...but also no boost to the front of the line. The catch is they must apply from their home country. Case by case that could be waived for familial, business, or 'I will be shot by my govt if I return home' reasons.
I commented earlier on how much easier it was for me to immigrate to Japan than for my family to immigrate to the US. The Japanese yen has been doing nothing but gaining on the dollar since I've lived here the exchange rate has improved from 156 yen to the dollar to 107 ~114 yen lately. So how are all the illegals "improving the economy"?
Biggest thing for some of the commenter's here....not all illegals are from Mexico....not all Mexicans are illegal. - prammy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What benefits are you talking about?
They cannot get unemployment,welfare,medicare/medicaid or anything. And many of those who do work on fake SSNs or whatever pay taxes, they just dont file so they dont get a refund.
While we are on the subject of benefits, did you also know that people who are on H1 (work) , B1 or J1 (business) pay taxes which they cannot claim? Such as unemployment and social security.
I think there was a TIME article in June where the Social Security Administration stated that they get a lot of taxed funds from people whose name and SSNs dont match, which are never claimed or corrected. So clearly a lot of illegals DO contribute without getting benefits from the govt.
If the illegal is willing to wait in line, pay the fine and back taxes in full (not the 3 out of 5 years), then by all means let them in and contribute more to the society that they live in. - wakkow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That article doesn't mention any concrete dollar numbers:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/19/business/19illegals.html?ex=1308369600&en=9d7f7d2165ea3d14&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
I agree that it's not fair to tax you when you can't legally take advantage of much that comes from it. However, I disagree that illegals "shored up the social security" system when you provide only unsubstantiated claims. - jsteiner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why can't take up civic responsibilities? Here's a hint: They are illegal, sshhh! Bottom line, laws are laws no ifs and no buts. A truly simple problem made hard by the Politically Correct liberal zealots and their rose colored glasses. If you want to become an illegal go ahead and sneak into another country and see what happens when your caught. You won't be handled with with a friendly reception and catered to.
- Y0tsuya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@zwolfe12
This type of legislation is a slap in the face to all those who immigrated legally. - razarizvi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9You are muddling up a number of different issues. The riots had nothing to do with too many immigrants. It was because of institutionalized racism. According to a survey, a person with an Arabic sounding name had 1/5 the chance of landing the same job than a person with a Fench sounding name with the exact same qualifications.
- akatsuki, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Frankly the only reason the American economy is doing well is because of illegals. We could be like Japan and fading into obscurity, or socialist Europe where they hide their immigrants in ghettos and prevent them from integrating.
As if you guys really want to mow lawns. The illegals here live like 20 to a room, work like crazy and save every penny. They certainly work a lot harder than most Americans I have seen.
Imagine crossing arid desert for hours, risking everything, and always facing the risk of deportation and detention just to work. Perhaps never seeing your family again. Now look at your cushy life and your crappy work ethic where you have time to post on digg all the time. Which do you think might end up being better for this country? I'll take the immigrant every day versus some spoiled American who enjoys the benefits of his grandparents immigrating but now wants to keep everyone else out to save his dead-end job that he doesn't even want.
You want to tax them, control them, charge for medical care? Guess what, just let them become legal and you can do all of that. - treed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14Obviously the solution is to let them take up civic responsibilities. Many of them would, if they were allowed to.
So why aren't they allowed to? - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i dug your comment because i find your information helpful. again, i feel theres nothing wrong with immigration so long as the people immigrating dont have a problem with me.
yes we should make the process clearer but i guess it shows our government is ***** up on both sides. - picardo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Hey, I'm an illegal immigrant and I pay all the social security and federal and state taxes there is in the books. And the best part of it is unlike the American citizens I never get those taxes back. I didn't get a refund check from the IRS, even though I was eligible for the last three years. (My salary is barely above the poverty level.) I'm not going to get a social security check on the taxes I paid in those years after I retire, either.
When the curmudgeonly citizens of the United States bellyache about the federal government taxing them to pay for services to illegal immigrants at schools and hospitals, I hope that they will also consider how much of the social security taxes that illegal immigrants paid into the system has shored up the social security and delayed its projected bankruptcy by many years. - lokoluis15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3glowing potato = photato?
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3immigration is fine if its gradual. what we're seeing is an erosion of american culture. thats the root of the issue and with it comes terrible terrible corruption as the latin 'do this for me on the side' culture supplants american culture. i know because i live it everyday here in south florida.
- picardo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@akatsuki
Bravo.
I also want to add that, contrary to the assumptions, illegal immigrants are already taxed despite being illegals. We pay sales taxes, state taxes and in many cases income and social security taxes as well. But these are "invisible" because we are many of us are invisible to the American public. If you look at the contributions of an immigrant to the American society, they far surpass the supposed harms incurred.
Also: medical system that is supposedly fraying by the influx of Mexican immigrants is bulwarked by the influx of doctors and medical practitioners from other parts of the world. If it weren't for immigrant professionals, there wouldn't be reliable healthcare in many small town hospitals in the United States. We go to these places because Americans leave them. It's that simple. It's a simple equation of supply and demand. - raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I guess the "liberation" of Iraq is getting more benefits from your taxes than the illegal immigrants.
- kgool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Obviously you do pay taxes. I am willing to bet all of the lawn guys working under the table do not file as independent contractors.
- one2gamble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5For every person like you there are 100 that get paid cash, skip out on their medical bills and pack 20 people to a apartment.
The last numbers I saw illegals put around 2 billion a year into our economy while sapping out 8 billion.
Money isnt even the issue here either its the fact that illegals are just that....illegal and they somehow think they should have rights and benefits. Oddly enough those communities that have large illegal populations also have large crime rates, ***** neighborhoods and bankrupted hospitals. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@geekee
