Mac Mini & TabletPC
Mac Mini: What are you doing TabletPC?
TabletPC: Writing a letter to the computer repair man threatening legal action. Do you have a lawyer for these kinds of problem?
Mac Mini: What problems?- HeyLew, on 04/15/2008, -14/+2:)
- Xchus, on 04/15/2008, -5/+0I think it would be something like this?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Hb-q1XPNr7M- samgab, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Oh SNAP! Here I was, hoping to hear Rick Astley's dulcet tones, and it's just the Backstreet Boys? Just no.
- cdahlkvist, on 04/15/2008, -1/+4Because 11 year old Mac users use profanity?
What happened to parenting? I think that kid needs his/her mouth washed out with soap rather than a computer.
I'm guessing this one is fake. - DarKnight90, on 04/15/2008, -2/+2I hate mac users so much.
- jemka, on 04/15/2008, -32/+9I see potential for a mac commercial.

- DigDugDigger, on 04/15/2008, -2/+66I was hoping the 11 year old was going to tell them what they did wrong way and explain to them how to fix the problem he was having.
Most Best Buy employees have the same PC troubleshooting abilities as a common 11 year old anyway, so would it surprise anyone?- yojiffyskippy, on 04/15/2008, -7/+1You must be very smart.
- thespottedelf, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2you must be the dumb ass the kid was sending the note to o.O
- TxAggie08, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Haha, this is true. I worked for best buy for 2 years. They couldn't do *****. The Geek Squad would come ask me questions all the time. They wouldn't let me work Geek Squad though because I was also their top salesman. My fellow employees' knowledge of basic consumer electronics and computers was AMAZINGLY BAD. My manager in COMPUTERS didn't know ANYTHING about computers and would sell customers the wrong ***** all the time. Best Buy only looks good if you compare it to Circuit City.
- yojiffyskippy, on 04/15/2008, -7/+1You must be very smart.
- lennybird, on 04/15/2008, -1/+10Sounds to me like he accidentally uninstalled a bunch of windows components in add/remove programs... Just a thought. On XP, anyway....
The last thing I would do is take my computer to them. People need to learn a thing or two about computers...
[/nerd]- GliTCH82, on 04/15/2008, -1/+8More than likely, the shortcuts just got deleted. Could have been a user profile corruption issue, with either the current user's or "all users" profiles missing appropriate shortcuts. Most novice users tend to think if they delete a shortcut, they remove the program, or if the shortcut's missing, the program was uninstalled.
[/supernerd] - lennybird, on 04/15/2008, -4/+10Perhaps, but then again - at age 11, I was figuring out what cl_flushentitiypacket, meant - in cs - along with other errors. I knew the inside and out of a computer by then. Kids are behind the times if they think shortcuts delete programs.
[/Perhaps on Par]- 11oops, on 04/15/2008, -3/+3Either that or they are too busy having a life and enjoying childhood. Not everyone has a passion for computers or yearns to grow up and be a network admin or programmer. You clearly needed to get out more as a child, and most likely still do.
- lennybird, on 04/15/2008, -0/+6Define "Having a life". Ironically, people who make these statements are typically the ones who need to socialize a little bit more.
I define life as living
I define my liking for computers - an interest. What's yours?
Nonetheless, I played little league from 8 to 12 years old and played paintball as well. Among other things. - 11oops, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Correct, and I'll digg you up. It was a poor choice of words, as I didn't mean it be as negative as it sounded. Try, 'too busy socializing, being carefree, and enjoying childhood.' And by that I mean doing the things that only children can do without consequence rather than focusing on things they will have the next fifty years to do. I can't recall how many times I've heard myself or other adults longing to have their carefree youth back, saying they should have taken more advantage of the freedom and possibilities it offered. I have never heard one say that they wished they had increased their typing speed at eight, learned java at ten, or programmed their first population trends modeling simulation at fourteen.
- lennybird, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3Point taken. At the age of sixteen, I look back on my not so far away "childhood," as part success, part failure. I look around at the majority of teenagers my age and even a little older and just bow my head in shame at their (hate to say this word, but) maturity. Either I began making friends with the wrong crowd or I just was above them.I didn't (and still don't) fit in with the mainstream activites: drinking, smoking, girls, e.t.c. I'm homeschooled, and instantly - that term brings up socially inept; which isn't entirely true in my case, at least I don't believe so. I have plenty of friends, most of them are older. I make friends more easily with 25 year olds than 16 year olds.
In the end though, I believe everyone is going to have regrets about their childhood. I'm also not saying I didn't have any fun when growing up, just my fun was different.
- lennybird, on 04/15/2008, -0/+6Define "Having a life". Ironically, people who make these statements are typically the ones who need to socialize a little bit more.
- dfeifer, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Also with computers consistently taking a back seat in the gaming world, I see more and more of them on then on a pc.
- 11oops, on 04/15/2008, -3/+3Either that or they are too busy having a life and enjoying childhood. Not everyone has a passion for computers or yearns to grow up and be a network admin or programmer. You clearly needed to get out more as a child, and most likely still do.
- 95acex, on 04/15/2008, -3/+3not everyone was subject to the social alienation and inadequacy that drove you to learn this at age 11.
- Cerebral, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Actually you must not be as big a nerd as you say. You would have noticed that he is missing the windows "sidebar" which is Vista.
More than likely someone turned those things off and ran the "unused desktop items" crap which will just delete stuff it thinks you don't use (shortcuts). Either that or they (the kid nor parents) knows how to use vista to find their programs.- lennybird, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1That's why I said "On XP, anyway..." So yes, I did catch that.
- GliTCH82, on 04/15/2008, -1/+8More than likely, the shortcuts just got deleted. Could have been a user profile corruption issue, with either the current user's or "all users" profiles missing appropriate shortcuts. - amdforever, on 04/15/2008, -1/+43The Consumerist:
"Young man, if you really exist, we're impressed for standing up for your consumer rights at so early an age."
When I read that, I almost wanted to pick up my 2-liter coke bottle and shove it up the Consumerist editor's ASS.- TVarmy, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3I'm conflicted. The kid should learn to be a rational and respectful advocate for himself. However, that he advocates for himself makes him better than most kids his age. There's a fine balance, and I think it's refreshing to see one extreme rather than the other.
- Rolcol, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2They already rag on Geek Squad a lot. There's no need to reiterate the same message: Geek Squad REALLY sucks.
- bigsteve, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1I think he's a little old for that.

- twiztidsinz, on 04/15/2008, -1/+10It's called "Iraq" maybe you've heard of it...
- Pixelante, on 04/15/2008, -2/+1Only professional soldiers allowed there. It's not like it's feasible to draft up kids by the score and send them off to be properly killed. However, WW1 would be a better example: they killed off a whole generation pretty effectively.
- Grommy, on 04/15/2008, -0/+6What the *****?
- fuhlavaflave, on 04/15/2008, -3/+6Is it at ALL necessary to bring up how much you disagree with the war in Iraq in EVERY ***** thread?
Do me a favor: do some research on Vietnam, and figure out why we lost. Then, start reading the newspaper and figure out why we're "losing" in Iraq and Afghanistan now. You'll found out just how different the two conflicts are.- lotsa1s, on 04/15/2008, -1/+6Both ((Ignoring Afghanistan) are conflicts were/are waged against the better interests of the United States against an enemy that was/is wholly not a threat to the safety and sovereignty of our country. Both placed the country in a difficult economic position, both were strongly unpopular, and both wars jeopardized the security of the United States on the world stage. Why we're "losing" is completely irrelevant, both wars would still be just as wasteful, useless, wrong, and embarrassing if we had WON them.
- fuhlavaflave, on 04/15/2008, -2/+3Why we're losing in Iraq is very important, as was why we lost in Vietnam. History is written by the winners, and the truth is that, had we been successful in Vietnam (and we could have been), Vietnam would have likely been looked back on as a major moral victory over the threat of Communism. Not a waste of time. Not against the best interests of our country.
We lost Vietnam because we entered a jungle war fighting against guerrillas on their home ground. We brought a World War II mentality and millions of dollars in high-tech equipment into a theater that called for us to match the Viet Cong's guerrilla style. We threw money and firepower at an endless wall of North Vietnamese nationalists, seemingly only inflaming their spirit and emboldening their cause. Their small victories were our great losses. We ***** up on strategy, big time.
The only strategy we ***** up on this time was an end-game strategy. We technically already won this war; everyone laughs when thinking back at Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech, but we decimated the Republican Guard in Iraq. We fought this war like we fought Gulf War I: lightning-quick and embracing chaos. We blitzkrieged Iraq like the German's did in World War II. THAT is what the difference is between Iraq and Vietnam. The "war" as it would traditionally be called is over. We are now in occupation.
Two things:
First of all, what do you mean by "jeopardize the security of the United States on the world stage"?
Second, what makes you think a stable and democratized Iraq would justify history calling this war "wasteful, useless, wrong, and embarrassing"?- lotsa1s, on 04/15/2008, -0/+0We continue to piss all over the region by haphazardly bombing and invading various countries. Blame 9/11 on "they hate our freedoms!" as much as you want, but we annoyed the wrong people by pushing our way of life into the region with the barrel of a gun for too long. They're eternal-***** for flying planes into our buildings, but in the end, we caused it because we keep trying to stir up the pot.
Ever see that movie Butterfly Effect? Ashton Kutcher's character keeps going back in time to try and make things better between him and the archtypical girl next door, but each time he does he causes something terrible to happen and ultimately makes things worse. Eventually, he ***** things up so badly, and realizes he can never repair the damage, so he goes back one final time to the birthday party where the two met and stops himself from becoming friends with her.
His intentions were good, he had an ideal world in his mind, but despite his best efforts, all he managed to do was ruin the lives of himself and everyone around him. See where I'm going with this?

- chillypacman, on 04/15/2008, -4/+2about the same sweetheart, the same reason 'we' are going to lose the vietnam war.
Why? Because of those bloody liberals... (so says your modern conservative).

- kcornwell, on 04/15/2008, -9/+252If he read digg he would know to stay the hell away from Best Buy. Tough luck kid.
- DeathJux, on 04/15/2008, -4/+34Just to clear up some misconceptions, Best Buy (and Geek Squad) isn't entirely inhabited by morons. While the stories that make the news will always be when ***** goes wrong, I have worked with some extremely bright and helpful people at major retailers.
However, due to volatile nature of retail, and the general lack of quality control, you have talent-less morons that get through as well, so I've found that each individual store/shop is entirely different in the amount and quality of service they provide.- Harabeck, on 04/15/2008, -3/+26Still, Geek Squad is always way more expensive than it should be.
- kinseyincanada, on 04/15/2008, -2/+20any form of repair is more expensive than it should be.
- TxAggie08, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Geek Squad will try and run up the bill as high as they can. I've watched them make some outrageous bills for simple repairs and task.
- Chaulis, on 04/15/2008, -1/+13Being a rep that works with bby on a regular basis, I know that all they really have is warm bodies who take stuff in, ship it out to the service center, and process it when it gets back. Using GS for computer repair is like calling a middleman to do your banking, they'll generally ***** something up, and blame the other guy for it.
- TxAggie08, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2They work on the desktops, but most of the laptop work is shipped out to some place in Cali. This is because the components for laptops are so proprietary. They do almost ALL the software stuff in the stores. But hey, being a person who worked at Best Buy for 2 years, I can say that all the reps I met were pretty much warm bodies themselves. But hey, if you ever find yourself working as a Rep at a Best Buy store, and you aren't still in school, EPIC FAIL.
- Chaulis, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1By rep I mean I am a vendor for another company. I will not associate my self as a blueshirt...
- Bungloid, on 04/15/2008, -2/+2Says a guy who works at Best Buy on the Geek Squad.
- GliTCH82, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2You can't clear up some misconceptions when there aren't any. Geek Squad (and Best Buy) are terrible at what they do, rip customers off on a regular basis, and the stories that make the news are only a fraction of the ***** that really goes on there because most of it goes unreported.
- wildfarris, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3(Disclaimer: I currently work at best buy but not on the geek squad) Saying geek squad is bad at what they do is just plain stupid. yes not everyone knows but there are guys that do. its split about 50/50, so it really just depends on what your talking about. and as far as being over priced, the service is on most things but not everything. for example 39 dollars for installing hardware isnt that bad but 59 dollars for office is alittle much. while the quality control for store employees isnt as good as it should be, it is better than most and you also have to remember that most people dont religiously read digg, slashdot, engadget in order to keep up to date with news from the cloud
- Myztry, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2There's always the occasional 'over qualified/under paid' worker at chain stores. But then they get real jobs... Everyone has to start somewhere. Not everyone has to stay...
- TxAggie08, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1True story. I started there and am now an engineer.
- Harabeck, on 04/15/2008, -3/+26Still, Geek Squad is always way more expensive than it should be.
- elvenrunelord, on 04/15/2008, -2/+0i set up computers for people for a living and i send them to best buy because they have affordable pc packages by HP. I have had very little trouble with products from this company. I do admit I never use their overpriced repair service. My opinion is if your going to have a computer you need to learn how to fix the damn thing yourself. And this attitude is one I impart to my customers. it saves them a lot of money in the long run.
- TxAggie08, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1LOL! PC's are ***** color coded! You are ripping people off yourself by acting like PC setup is such a difficult task they could never do it themselves. 10 minutes MAX, and they come with instruction with pretty pictures. They are written idiot style so even my 70 year old Grandmother could figure them out.

- Awspire, on 04/15/2008, -8/+7Ahhh, the ol' "my Grandma even uses Linux", propaganda. Heres a tip, remove Windows admin privs for those that just want to check e-mail and surf the web.
- TheNik, on 04/15/2008, -4/+2I love the Linux-using grandmother scenario. It's never the case unless your grandma is some IT professional. :/
- aukxsona, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Okay I'm idgit house wife...I use Linux! My husband breaks it all the time and blames me though ;)
- benplaut, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2@Awspire: If only it was that simple. The issue is when you really aren't around to fix the computer. My grandma, who uses purely email, netflix, and a tiny bit of web surfing, has to call me whenever she has a problem that isn't fixed by a reboot. Because of weirdness with her ISP, I am unable to connect remotely to fix problems, and it's a real PITA to fix problems over the phone--anyone who has worked in tech support would agree.
With windows, which she had for the first 6 months of owning her computer, one or two hundred bucks worth of repairs per month was commonplace, because as soon as the littlest thing on her system changed (automatic updates messages, for example), she wouldn't know what to do. Soon enough, she stopped using her computer out of fear of breaking things. The next time I went to visit, I set her up with Ubuntu 6.06 and proceeded to teach her the simplest basics of how to use a computer--left and right clicking, back and forward buttons in a browser: those sort of things. That was over two years ago, and nowadays I get a help call every two or three months--to date, none of the problems have every been a big issue to fix in only a few steps over the phone.
Can that sort of thing be done in Windows? Sure! I use XP myself most of the time and almost never have notable problems. It would take a fair amount of work to have sufficiently bulletproof security systems for a two year stretch, but it can certainly be done. Would Windows be overkill for her purposes? Absolutely, and so is Ubuntu. The difference is that I really can't count of Windows to stay exactly the same in the hands of a complete novice for two years running. What happens when one piece of spyware goes through the defenses and changes her homepage? A long call to me, and then she has to go to a local tech company and pay through the nose to get it fixed. Worse yet, if they change the slightest thing (for example, not putting her homepage back to what it was before), it's yet another call to me. Yea, Deep Freeze or something similar would do the trick, but what's the point? This sort of problem is something that Linux is really, really good at fixing.
Gosh, that was wordy. - GliTCH82, on 04/15/2008, -4/+4I'm calling *****, because my grandpa uses Ubuntu and he says your grandma hates it.
- Kanidia, on 04/15/2008, -3/+13I drove insane when I tried to install a program and I had to type command lines.... I know that all time Linux fans will probably frown upon me, but I just wanted to share a noob comment about my experiences with Linux..

Just open up a package manager , click a check box, click OK ...Presto !!!! Even if I had go CLI , how hard is sudo apt-get install insertprogramhere to type ? It still beats looking it up in google , downloading doing virus check on it , running through installer sometimes rebooting and sometimes running msconfig to keep the damn thing from initiating upon start up.
- mvent2, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1What on Earth forced you to use the command line? Doesn't your distribution come with a package manager? (Search, click, install. Much easier than Windows and no need to specify install locations or agreement to EULAs)
- Eddible, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Using the terminal is the fun of Linux! That's not even sarcastic.
- geodescent, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Clearly nobody here uses anything other than Ubuntu. What if you want to run a super lightweight distro such as Puppy and STILL install scanner/printer/camera support as well as obscure stuff like TrueCrypt, ZLQUake, and better ATI drivers on your Compaq Armada 600MHz laptop?
- ArvinJA, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1If somone installs Ubuntu for him and puts the applications he needs on the desktop, then it wouldn't be harder at all to use ubuntu, as a matter of fact he wouldn't be able to get viruses and stuff like that, and he'd just be better off with ubuntu :)
- TheGreatBelow, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1You were really stoned when you wrote that, weren't you?

- jamesdew, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1thats not that bad really. It takes several hours to do. A mechanic would charge far more for a job that took equivilent time.
- cphelps, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2If it takes you several hours to install an operating system, you have very big problems.
- jamesdew, on 04/15/2008, -0/+0After installing windows you have to install office, .net framework, microsoft installer to install .net framework, direct x, set up drivers, java, service packs, flash, acrobat reader, firefox, security updates + other apps you may like using. Not to mention if the user wants you to back up their data before hand and restore it.
Installing windows itself is about 1 hour then fiddling with all the other crap I would say another 2.

- benplaut, on 04/15/2008, -1/+6No, of course we didn't have shoes. We couldn''t even afford feet! In the winter, which was just about all the time in those days, our dad would sell our knees to pay for firewood. We'd drag the square-wheeled car to the mill with our tongues, load it up with wood, and then lick it back home. Bridges were the worst, for fear of your tongue being stuck to the metal joints--my brother is still out there stuck to a bridge on I-75 after a particularly bad winter seven years ago. If you're every passing by that way, give him a holler for me.
And then, if we were lucky, the lawyer would grant us a few brief minutes of his time in exchange for the firewood, our frozen tongues, and sometimes even the birthright of the eldest son. The advice he gave was never very good, though--after all, this was the cheapest lawyer in town. - h4mx0r, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2ditto. There was an air of superiority when your elementary/middle school friends came to you for computer help/advice...
Ah yes, those were the days...- Gravey9, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1ya, now computer technology has surpasses your knowledge and you are left in the 3rd grade

- jameshighmore, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5Same here. I think this is partly to do with why people seem to be getting less intelligent these days. When I was a kid and I had a problem, I always tried to sort it out myself to begin with before asking, let alone paying, someone else to take a look at it.
- Gravey9, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3People don't kid yourselves when you were kids you were all whinny little brats just like everyone else.

- chimney, on 04/15/2008, -5/+0if he was really a smart 11 year old he would be running linux instead of windows.

- XForSakenX, on 04/15/2008, -1/+0i can say it doesn't look legit. but props for trying.
