What's worse than traditional blogspam (paraphrase/click-through) is one that simply plagiarizes. - diegoferreyra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20The Cathedral of the Dark Side of the Force

Star Wars IV: A New Hope came out in the late seventies(1977 to be exact) and Lucas had been dreaming it up for awhile. The competition for the grotesque was in the 1980's. - randf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14now this is the type of digg story we all know and love...
- NymphoChik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I’m waiting for Lucas to sue the church.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Here's the official site for it:

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any pictures on Google or Flickr. Being there myself, several years back, however, I can vouch that it's hard to see as it's a ~very~ big cathedral.
EDIT: I found one. He's in the very bottom-middle of the picture. He's the gargoyle on the right that looks rounder.

FTA
"Gargoyles carry away excess water via pipes running through their mouths; grotesques deflect rainwater by bouncing it off the top of their heads, noses or other projecting parts, and away from the stone walls." - Wonkanobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wait, is this a God = your evil emperor thing?
- missinglink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This just in: George Lucas sues the little boy, the United States, God and anyone who has taken pictures of the National Cathedral without his express written consent. Then he eats the frog-alien next to his thrown, takes a dump on his fans and strangles the remaining life out of the Star Wars mythology with another trilogy.
- mikegagliano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I love how one of the ads on this page advertises "gargoyle sunglasses". Talk about a niche market.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7yeah, 503's are awesome!
- psyanyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5horrible pictures. They couldn't get someone with a decent zoom lens?
- NinjaYaddaYadda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Duggmirror has the picture:
http://duggmirror.com/offbeat_news/Darth_Vader_gargoyle_watches_from_Washington_National_Cathedral/ - MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Munster in Freiburg, Germany has an interesting gargoyle on one if it's steeples.
http://ask.metafilter.com/48717/Things-to-do-in-Freiburg-when-youre-lucky-and-have-a-month-to-hang-out-and-explore
I'm guessing it went something like this:
Worker: "Guys look, I made this gargoyle, I've been working on it in my spare time"
Worker 2: "Dude, are you serious, no way is boss going to let you add that"
Worker: "Then we just won't let boss see will we? I just want to see if anyone notices, I mean there are cows, horses, pigs, peoples, lions, and now a chick pissing out of her ass."
When i visited Freiburg on a school trip, I made sure to buy a few postcards of this, and of course found it. :) - majordanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2uh.... is this almost the 1st of April?
And what is the difference between http://www.cathedral.org and http://www.nationalcathedral.org ? - KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe Darth Vader was placed there with George Lucas' consent.
BTW, The Darth Vader gargoyle is small and quite high up the back of one of the towers.
You need one heck of a long lens to get a decent picture of it (from experience, a 300mm lens would barely show it). - lando3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when i went to washington dc in eighth grade they made this known. they also said there was a bugs bunny and mickey mouse i believe
- basselope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another of the original Grotesques is wearing coveralls with stone-mason's tools in the pockets.
Turns out to be a representation of the craftsman's Foreman. A little light-hearted jab, we're led to believe. - Crushyerbones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's an old european tradition to make "special" gargoyles pissing from their ass in the direction of your enemie's border. I remember a church in my country (Portugal) had one of it's roof's sides completely covered with gargoyle ***** facing Spain xD
- drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha... Thanks for sharing.
- Slacker101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I saw the darth cader head. My sister came with me and she thought she saw the head everywhere.
- snatchedlaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What?
- mrfloppy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this is spam..... stop linking to bloody blog posts about other blogs about real news - LINK TO THE REAL STORY. reported as spam
- basselope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Found this in the pdf "Eight Great Gargoyles" from the cathedral's website ( this is the figure I remembered):
4A stone carver noted for losing his temper is seen
“blowing his top.” This gargoyle is an affectionate
tribute to former master carver Roger Morigi, who often
exhibited “five o’clock shadow” and wore a soft hat like
the one seen here. Note his cleft foot, the horns poking
through the hat and the curly tail, all signs of his “devilish”
nature. He carries not only his carver’s mallet but also an
impressive array of weapons in his back pocket.

I remember reading a book in the seventies about the cathedral's construction. Some of the methods they used were
pretty amazing. Definitely worth a look. - dfdemar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Different entities. One is for a foundation and the other is for the cathedral itself.
- dfdemar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The article does not plagiarize. You must have missed the link to the PDF right before the quote.
- Eldorian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So did the kid who submitted this in the contest plagiarize his entry and no one even noticed it was Vader?
- mehbored, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Christopher Vader of Kearney, Nebraska who submitted a drawing of this futuristic representation of evil
woah other ones sucks compared to that
a raccoon, a girl with pigtails and braces and a man with large teeth and an umbrella???
wonder y the Darth Vader one is third - FloppyLlamaDigg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
- solidhubris, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Neat as in there's something slightly blasphemous about the whole thing.
Not that I care though, I'm a Zoroastrian monk. - standardgrey, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4Neeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!
- Birdoftruth, on 10/12/2007, -36/+4I don't see whats so neat about people realizing that Lucas has very little creativity in his body.
