D.B. Cooper Evidence Unearthed

- evanfp, on 03/27/2008, -5/+1Sounds like an episode of Lost.
- fkr3, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3Didn't you see the movie? He landed in a mine shaft and died, but he didn't burn his friend's share of the money.
There's a refreshingly funny documentary about it here:

- Aidenag, on 03/27/2008, -4/+24If the parachute was buried as deep as it sounds like it was, odds are here did it after landing. Meaning he survived the jump..
- antonio97b, on 03/27/2008, -1/+30You also have to factor in that it was 1971. Mount St. Helens blew up in 1980. When it blew up it sent a flood of mud down the river. That is what probably buried it.
- Exekutor, on 03/27/2008, -2/+3Or somebody else found the body, the parachute and the money and buried the parachute there, the body elsewhere and kept the money for himself.
- Cr00kie, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Hell, I would have!
- johnpaul191, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2It's also possible he's attached to the end of the parachute they didn't dig up yet. I do have to admit i kind of hope the mystery is never solved.......

- noahhoward, on 03/27/2008, -5/+24"Part of the chute remains buried in the field and will need to be dug out with heavy equipment."
Christ, grab a shovel, do you really need heavy equipment to dig up the rest of something that kids pulled out with their bare hands?- MasterGrief, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4While I see where you're coming from, they probably want to use big equipment so they can get more of it out at once and not risk tearing it (also, they can scoop huge mounds of dirt and sift through it for possible clues)
But heavy equipment might actually make it more easily accidentally torn... Oh well. - santiago1, on 03/27/2008, -4/+4 Heh, dugg for pointing out the blatant sensationalism!
- MrSalty, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2The part that the children "pulled out with their bare hands" had first been dug up by a plow blade.

- MAGZine, on 04/22/2008, -1/+5I saw this on the news yesterday. I especially like to note how they said that hijackings weren't uncommon back then, it was a more 'please co-operate' thing.
Basically 'don't hijacks us, but if you must, go right ahead'. I don't want to be on the plane with the hijacker that can't fly.- ncc74656m, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3I'm more worried about the ones that can only fly. As in, get the plane to go where they want it. Thanks. Already happened.
- shortyjacobs, on 03/27/2008, -11/+2This is BS. Read the CNN story, and you see all they have is white parachute material, so they can't tell if it's the same as DB's parachute.

- vornan19, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Key word missing from your post is 'yet'. TFA said they were going to clean it and compare possible labels. If the found chute has no label they could test the material to see it's relative age (may not be able to date something so relatively young).
- willynilly, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1*****. The day this story broke (which was several days ago), they had pictures of the chute clearly showing A DATE AND SERIAL NUMBER.

Then it's not likely to be the one I packed." So he didn't even know the story, namely that the kids cut the lines away from whatever they are connected to in the field, and the harness will be forthcoming. - willynilly, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Not true. $6K of it was found in 1980, although not "spent."
- dupswapdrop, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Yes I know some was found by a river. IF you had 200,000 dollars I think you would spend some of it over that amount of time.

- batguano, on 03/27/2008, -0/+13Google *****! Do you use it?
- theundone, on 03/27/2008, -2/+7Well obviously I'm an idiot. I had no idea D.B. Cooper was even a real person. I had never heard of him till Prison Break.
- hairyblue, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3i knew he was real, the film 'without a paddle' was all about him, and that was totally believable :P
- johnpaul191, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1There is some show like Americas Most Wanted/Manhunt that did an hour long special on him. It's pretty old, but considering the clues don't come in so often it's still worth watching. I'm sure it'll be rerun again now. I know i saw it before the New Radio episode about Jimmy James being DB Cooper.
- 4LeggedtriPod, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Obviously you are. But @ least you know it.
- Whackly, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3Jimmy James!
- AManWithNoName, on 03/27/2008, -0/+21Am I the only one who actually knows who DB Cooper is simply for him being DB Cooper, and not some obscure pop culture reference to him? Hm.
That aside, this looks interesting, but it's not like it would blow the case wide open or anything. Even if he DID land there and DID bury the parachute afterwards, I doubt he'd still be in the area. It's been over 35 years, we need to give up on the case.- willskillz, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1That's what I'm wondering. I remember reading about him at the library in middle school.
- xerigen, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4I watched some hour long program about him on some discovery branded channel. Apparently some dude said he was D.B. Cooper on his deathbed and they were relatively sure it was him. I guess not.
- johnpaul191, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Considering he pulled his stunt in 1971, most digg users were probably not born yet. Not a diss, just a fact. I stumbled onto that show on one of the Discovery channels before i heard any of the pop-culture references, but before that i didn't really know that much about it.
- junkwheel, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1He caused the largest police man hunt in history, at least a few people know about him.
- Lunarbunny, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I'm 20 and I heard about it through a more scholarly source...although being a Washingtonian might have something to do with that.
- girlpirate, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I couldn't tell you how I learned about D.B but its one of those things I seem to have always known. its probably knowledge I did gain from a pop culture reference seeing as how I was born 14 years after it happened. Thats what surprises me. There have been SO MANY references to D.B Cooper in comics, tv and movies that it seems impossible for anyone in North America at least to not know about him. It's like knowing who Macguyver is...Everyone knows Macguyver right? well everyone except my buddies girlfriend but she doesnt count as people.

- iskub, on 03/27/2008, -1/+7my parents actually own the snowcat that the FBI used to look for him... pretty damn cool...
- mrgeekguy, on 03/27/2008, -0/+8Looking on Google Maps, there is an Air National Guard base in Oregon, not far from Clark County Washington, so D.B. Cooper may not be the only source of a parachute.
- louley, on 03/27/2008, -8/+2Inaccurate Story.
Please Bury. - kokopelli2001, on 03/27/2008, -2/+4As usual KOIN TV in Portland screws up. The parachute dug up is *alleged* to have come from DB Cooper. It is being tested to confirm or deny the allegation. Never trust any Portland, Oregon, news source to get the story correct. Perhaps that's why the story broke out of Seattle and not Portland.
And the actual name is D Cooper. Another corporate media screwup.- Petrarch1603, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1the oregonian is a bastion of journalism....at least as far as reprinting stories from the wires. Original reporting, not so much.
- WilliamDavis, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1It is DB Cooper. You must be thinking of D Snyder or D West.
- cha5e, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1No, it's Dan Cooper. The media inserted the B by mistake, but it stuck.
- skews13, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1boy,wouldn't the fbi like to beleive cooper died or didn't get a chance to spend the money,to keep the myth alive of their invincability of being able to solve crimes such as this. i hope he got away with it personally,so there will always be a shadow of doubt, that if you do something like this, you can get away with it. taking away the fear factor that you will get caught. happy hunting assholes.
- cha5e, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1It is well-known that he didn't spend the money, as the serial numbers were recorded before it was given to him, and none of the bills have been found in circulation.

- Choop, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Actually you are "a ***** ignorant moron". No one knows what his name is and when he bought his ticket he gave the name Dan Cooper. The FBI interviewed a guy named D.B. and it stuck. By your logic anyone calling the Zodiac Killer "The Zodiac Killer" is a "***** ignorant moron" since we don't know who he was either.
- tehjarvis, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1from wikipedia:
On March 24, 2008, the FBI announced that it was in possession of a parachute recovered from a field in northern Clark County, Washington, near the town of Amboy. A private property owner was in the process of making a road on the property with a bulldozer when the blade caught some cloth, and his children pulled the cloth until the canopy lines appeared. A comparison to the backup chute given to the hijacker (but never used) is planned.[47][48] According to lead investigator Larry Carr, the discovered parachute is the right color (white), right size (26-foot canopy), and was found in the right location, but the FBI has yet to determine whether it is a Navy Backpack 6 — the exact kind used by Cooper. The FBI is seeking the assistance of parachute experts who might be able to confirm the plausibility that the chute belonged to Cooper.[49] In a March 26, 2008 interview on The Roe Conn Show on WLS (AM) in Chicago, Larry Carr, the former lead investigator for the case, stated that one of the two missing parachutes (ones that Cooper allegedly used) was actually a deactivated training chute that was accidentally given to Cooper. - soupnrc, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1SWEET, DB Cooper is one of my favorite random heist-type stories. Cool stuff. Not to mention that I totally live in Washington, it's a piece of my home state history.

- 4LeggedtriPod, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2So a kid found $5,800 in Cooper's cash in 1980. And now in 2008 some kids found his chute. I'd like to know the competence level of the people working this case for almost 40 years.

If his chute deployed at all, it was on impact. - Nishkid64, on 03/30/2008, -0/+0This was annoying...
I nominated the article for FA and it was promoted on Monday. A day later, we hear of a big break in the case...vandalism and unverified edits galore!
