- AmyVernon, on 11/27/2008, -1/+32Does anyone see the irony in the internet domain hosting this story?
- dha07030, on 11/28/2008, -1/+15This is one of the few times I saw the headline thought that it has to be misleading and was wrong. That is some crazy *****.
- mediaphile, on 11/29/2008, -0/+12"Throughout the trial everyone has heard testimony from family and friends of Brandau who testified that she would make homemade treats for every jury in Judge Rowland Barnes' courtroom. But there's never been a concrete reason given as to why he shot her to death during the March 2005 shooting spree."
Judge Rowland Barnes shot Brandau to death? - Dumbledorito, on 11/28/2008, -2/+8Kind of like most of human history, it seems. Though not always over brownies.
- FI5HERMAN, on 11/29/2008, -0/+5Poor Julie, her good and genuine intentions cost her her life & this happened in our time in a place of law, certainly disapointing to say the least.
- rdarsey, on 11/29/2008, -0/+5I do not think she was that type of reporter. I understood it to mean she was the actual "Court Reporter". You know, the person that sits in front of judge's bench and takes notes on that funny looking typewriter? Link here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_reporter - inactive, on 11/29/2008, -0/+5"He was upset with the court reporter she was bringing brownies and baked treats to the jury. In Nichols' mind, she was part of the conspiracy against him,"
Brownie Conspiracy - jeffkee, on 11/29/2008, -1/+5My neighbour used to make killer brownies too.
- tgc1, on 11/29/2008, -0/+4Damn that saying is getting more and more true by the day.
"No good deed goes unpunished" - spawnfree, on 11/29/2008, -1/+5you mean all black people, don't you.
animals don't dehumanize. only humans do that.
and only by dehumanizing someone can you bring harm to them of this type.
unless you are a pscho (child abuse) or brain damaged, and that is not a trait of black people alone, doode. - gridity, on 11/29/2008, -0/+4I don't think she got shot *because* she baked cookies... she got shot because the man is INSANE and that's the insane reason he's using. She could easily have gotten shot for wearing green that day or some other innocuous act.
- stormofswords, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3This guy was a monster when he did this and a monster now. Throw him in solitary confinement and let him slowly lose his mind.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -8/+11Maybe you should take the white hood off.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3Awwww have i offended some people with a pretty common african american stereotype?... booo hooo..
- Gemfinder, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3What is this, "Everyone Be Violent-Ass Psychopaths For Really Stupid Reasons" Week?
Everybody! Just chill out! - AmazingSteve, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3No good deed goes unpunished. FACT.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -2/+5Animals like this cannot be rehabilitated. Dig a hole, shoot him, burry him. Done.
- thegrantman, on 11/29/2008, -1/+4I just won't make a joke about not getting brownie points.
- opticwind, on 11/29/2008, -1/+4I understand that the only people that murder are unbalanced (so you say). But most murders in the US are drug-related. And I'm not talking about users. Sellers and dealers. They don't kill for vengeance or racism. They do it for profit and respect. They know what they're doing is wrong and they don't give a *****.
And that lack of empathy, that lack of basic human conscience, is what makes them the most dangerous people of all. - TheSkunkMonkey, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1What a stupid idiot. I've got something for ya Brian...

Gonna come shoot me now? Idiot. - lacrimosa2008, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1What happened in March 2005?
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2I just commented saying almost exactly the same thing, but saw yours in time to delete it. I totally agree with you.
It's like karmic balance has gone ***** up. - aaabbbsss, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1Cookies!
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2I'm pretty sure he's already lost his mind, genius.
- Headinawheel, on 11/29/2008, -5/+7Jesus. That's the worst taste I think I've ever seen...
- ialwayswin7, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2okay well i've got to say that it definitely isn't appropriate for a courtroom reporter to bring free treats to the jurors who are deciding the outcome of the trial and possibly this guys life.
- AmnesiacJack, on 11/29/2008, -2/+4Disgusting! I can't believe that was caught on video tape.
- fragomatik, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Buried for convoluted sentence construction.
I don't know, maybe its just that I'm slow today, but I found the writing clumsy and awkward.
Like I said maybe its just me, but surely the author could have expressed himself in a clearer, more concise manner? - misterenigma07, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately, it is real. I remember hearing about it on the news a few years back. There is actually a pretty detailed description here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Nichols
[Edit:] I meant the event; the fact that he killed the court reporter over some baked treats, I'm not sure. - MacParrot, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Nope, after re-reading the events of that day, this is clearly a man who has lost any right to return to civilization and considering the lives he destroyed forfeited his right to live as well. I'm not usually in favor of the death penalty, but this was man with all the tools and talents to really go somewhere and he threw them all away. Even his own family was warning people about the escape attempt and repeated attempts to smuggle weapons into the courthouse. Screw him, let him fry
- Markers, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2He should be taken out back and shot...
- misterenigma07, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Nichols
- antdude, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Anything can happen these days. :(
- Syric, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1I don't think trials cost millions.
- irvin666, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1This is why we can't have nice things.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1Heck of an inside job, Brownie.
- Gemfinder, on 11/29/2008, -3/+4Even worse, that two other people Dugg his comment up!
- ialwayswin7, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1don't get me wrong, what he did was terrible and unjustifiable, i just think she should have acted a little more professional.
- cizzlebolicious, on 11/29/2008, -1/+2How so? She wasn't trying to sway the jurors.
- Syric, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1That has got to be my least favorite saying of all time. Makes me wanna punch somebody in the face.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1You can kind of see the thought process of the guy...as insane as it was...
The guy was crazy. What he saw could have been the reporter "bribing" the jury. It's a real shame people can find themselves that lost. - maz2331, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1Barbaric? Not quite, although it SHOULD be. I'd say we should take a page from history and bring back good old fashioned impaling for crimes like these. Done properly, it takes about 2 days.
My only concern is that we have to be really sure first. It must be proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that the accused is truly guilty, with the judge, jury, and prosecutor liable for the same punishment if an innocent person is ever executed. - Sethiuss, on 11/29/2008, -1/+2 Don't ***** with hypoglycemics.
- logosx1, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Sorry, there's no grammatical error here. The "he" in the last sentence cannot refer back to a possessive (Judge Rowland Barnes'). See the following story if you're confused:
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950 ... - s0nicfreak, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1but both comments are right
- PerroLoco, on 11/29/2008, -1/+1Twinkie defense?
No good deed goes unpunished?
I think both. - JohnADreams, on 12/01/2008, -0/+0The jury would have no way of knowing the journalist's opinion on the case and therefore it really wasn't affecting the decision one way or the other.
- Syric, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1The jurors get free treats all the time. Who cares if the stenog brought them?
