- NikoKun, on 10/24/2007, -6/+94Ah, it's good to see some progress. Obviously actions like this one, and like whats going on in Denver to lower priority of state enforcement of Marijuana laws... Are mostly symbolic, but they accomplish a lot in terms of the public view on Prohibition. Especially when a top prosecutor is in support of such a change. These are some of the kinds of steps that need to be accomplished, Getting more and more public officials in office who oppose this prohibition, and voting out those who don't... Certainly, step in the right direction, now lets just see more of this!
These prohibition laws are pointless, only cause harm to the individuals, and waste a lot of police and prosecutor time, which could be spent on more legitimate, violent crimes. And these laws have done nothing toward the goal of keeping kids off drugs, or making the country drug free. The goals of Prohibition are impossible, and currently anyone that wants to smoke Marijuana, already does... And they should be allowed to use this drug, which is safer than alcohol. In my mind regardless of the illegality, they've made a better choice for themselves... So why criminalize them? Didn't we learn anything from the 1920s Alcohol Prohibition?
Anyway, this is a good step, lets hope to see more of this in the near future. Prohibition needs to end, it is as big of a injustice, as any other, based in lies and false propaganda... It causes nothing but harm, criminalizes that which is not a crime, and blaims the problems it creates, on the drug itself, in attempts to make it look worse. We could solve many of the problems around pot, by ending it's prohibition! - arpnuke, on 10/27/2007, -5/+58"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."
Abraham Lincoln (1809-65), U.S. President.
Speech, 18 Dec. 1840, to Illinois House of Representatives - arcangelgabriel, on 11/04/2007, -1/+4717 years in Law Enforcement has taught me that Marijuana laws are silly. I could care less about dope and you WON'T see me writing or arresting anyone for possessing it. I'll take it away and destroy it, CYA only though.
And NO I don't smoke it for myself, I had enough of that ***** when I was 20. [Just a preemptive strike] - Ferre1, on 10/22/2007, -6/+48Most people don't know this, but that's how Cannabis (I don't like the word "marijuana" as it's been the tool for that racist Anslinger to prohibit it) became de-criminalized in the Netherlands. The de-criminalization and legalization process in the Netherlands started with a memo to all police offices from the Dutch minister of justice which told the police to stop persecuting people for Cannabis use and to focus on crime that has more priority, like violent crimes, burglary, etc. because there always are crimes which really sre more important for the police to go after than folks smoking a joint, the cops stopped to harass Cannabis users.
- Acewrap, on 10/22/2007, -5/+29***** you, fascist.
- Travisx2, on 10/22/2007, -1/+24Isn't that supposed to be how democracy works?
If a majority of citizens want something to be legal/illegal, it is so? - catalysis, on 10/22/2007, -0/+18Not true at all. In Madison, WI we have an ordinance allowing possession of up to 1/4 pound of marijuana in our homes without fear of citation or arrest and we get federal funding just like any other city. We are doing perfectly well for ourselves, thanks for your concern though.
- Observant1, on 10/22/2007, -3/+20start the petitions !!
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -4/+21Not shocking that this would happen in Missoula, easily the hippiest town in Montana. I wouldn't get your hopes up for the rest of the country, what happens in Missoula usually stays there due to the fact that the rest of the country isn't nearly as liberal.
I guess it's progress though. - joklem, on 10/22/2007, -4/+18Pot is addictive? Pot smokers kill themselves? Why am I even replying to you?
- NikoKun, on 10/22/2007, -1/+15Civil Disobedience of unjust laws, is a must, especially if you're a patriotic American. =P
- arcangelgabriel, on 10/22/2007, -0/+14Not yet.
- tidejwe, on 11/04/2007, -2/+15I'm sick of everyone thinking this is just about "Potheads" and "Non-potheads". I've never tried alcohol, marijuana or any other drug in my entire life, and I never plan to, but I still TRULY believe, and will fight for someone to have the right to drink alcohol and smoke POT. I don't think they should be illegal just because "I" choose not to use them. Damn all you self-righteous jack-asses. I don't look down on anyone who drinks or smokes. Some of my best friends do it and I love them to death as much as I do people who don't. This is about what should be legal and not legal. If you find it morally reprehensible then don't smoke it, but quit pushing your opinions on everyone else. It pisses me off even when it doesn't directly hurt me since I don't smoke.
Not everyone who supports marijuana actually smokes it you idiots...just as not everyone who support responsible drinking actually drinks. I know I'm one of them and I'll fight for those rights even if I never plan to exercise them myself! - Joe_rigby, on 10/22/2007, -3/+15The option to choose is the only American option.
By your same logic, one could easily demand that if you don't want to "SMOKE POT", that you should "GET THE ***** OUT OF THE UNITED STATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Nothing really gives either demand justification other than opinion. - rot13ubercrypto, on 10/22/2007, -1/+13So are fellatio, sodomy and any number of other perversions in many communities. I guess people with a healthy sex drive SHOULD JUST LEAVE.
- joklem, on 11/09/2007, -4/+15Get the ***** out of the gene pool.
- SenatorChubby, on 10/22/2007, -3/+14Megalize Larijuana
- oilcan, on 10/22/2007, -2/+12Leave the united states if you want to smoke pot?
LOL - WilliamDavis, on 10/22/2007, -0/+9Yeah, it's a good start. I didn't like this, though...
"In March, Missoula County commissioners voted to narrow the initiative's scope and apply it only to misdemeanor, or personal-use amounts of marijuana, arguing that voters didn't realize the full range of the measure when they supported it."
Right, because voters are too stupid for their opinion to actually count, unless they're voting them in office. - speerross, on 10/22/2007, -1/+10Maybe you should check your facts before talking. In the history of mankind there is no documented death from Cannabis. Ever. It has been shown to be practically impossible to overdose on it becuase you cannot intake the required amount of THC without suffocating first.
- speerross, on 10/22/2007, -2/+11Laws are not absoloutes, they are temporary measures that can be repealed, Alcohol was illegal once. Maybe all drinkers should be declared "un-American" becuase they use a drug that was once illegal?
- cnot3, on 10/22/2007, -1/+9If you make them online petitions then they will get even more attention.
- anthonyglamis, on 10/24/2007, -1/+9r81984,
What you are missing although you are very much entitled to your opinion, is that most people are going to do what they want to do. It may be pot, cigarettes, alcohol, even heroin. You simply cannot say because one cannot follow the law that America would have 8 billion more dollars. There is a bigger picture that you do not realize. I have seen people waste their lives on booze that can be bought on every corner in America. There are TRUE statistics that show cigarettes as the number one killer of anything in America. Yet we have a plant that is illegal to posses initially because of racism. The bigger picture is ridiculous, and as long as we go along with other peoples agendas who's purpose in life is to judge how we should live our lives we are nothing but robots. - NikoKun, on 10/22/2007, -3/+11You don't deserve intelligent replies anymore... lol
- cranium, on 10/23/2007, -2/+10An opinion from an anti-drug propaganda site. I'm impressed.
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -2/+9Oh look! It's that moron 5urr3al5am again! LMAO
- holotone, on 10/22/2007, -3/+10Van Valkenburg's decision to finally respect the will of the voters was a long time coming; In fact, he was behind the push to make sure that the initiative was worded to only apply to misdemeanor offenses, since in his words "The voters of Missoula didn't know what they were voting for..."
http://www.grupthink.com/topic/5605/Initiative_2
Keep in mind that this initiative served as merely a "suggestion" from the voters of Missoula county - Van Valkenburg's action, then, was akin to taking a letter from a constituent and re-writing it to fit his worldview.
Despite that whole brouhaha, I'm very pleased to hear that Missoula County has come around to respecting the will of the citizens, at least for the most part. - joklem, on 10/22/2007, -0/+7*Dumb hick voice*: HELLO SIR, ONE OF YOUR EMPLOYEE HAS SAID THAT HE SMOKES POT ON AN INTERNET FORUM.
- Joe_rigby, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7"except maybe that pot is an illegal drug in the US"
Morality and the law do not always meet. Slavery used to be a completely legal practice. It was illegal for black men and women and children to flee slavery, when today it is clearly immoral to sanction slavery or enforce any such law.
The day will come when we look back on the prohibition efforts against marijuana and many other benign drugs, and find that the damage to society from the penalties levied against those caught using them are just as archaic and deplorable as slavery. - joklem, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6A stupid person will be stupid with or without cannabis. What you experienced is what we all experienced, stupid people in college.
- NikoKun, on 10/22/2007, -2/+8How unamerican, and ignorant, of you... -_- You clearly have no concept of the core values America was founded on... Nor do you seem to have any knowledge of how freedom in our country, has been upheld throughout our past.
You desperately need to go read up on history, preferably on the many Civil Rights issues we've had... Either that, or STFU... -_-
But hey, glad your stupidity is visible here for all to see... LOL Ignorance is stupid... - NikoKun, on 10/22/2007, -3/+9This is the United States... People don't have to leave here, in order to have freedoms. If you don't like Cannabis, FINE... You have that right, and you don't have to smoke it... We certainly wont make you... =P
But you can't make anyone leave, nor can you restrict our freedoms.
If we want to smoke pot, it is within our freedoms to do so, and we will change the laws regarding it, since they harm our freedom. =P - thrallie, on 11/04/2007, -3/+9883XL..Are you stupid? You can be charged with driving while under the influence of weed right now. That law would not change. Did you know that alcohol is legal in the USA but driving while drinking is illega? Think of it like that. Dumbass.
- cranium, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7So? Some people make brownies with it. Does that cause cancer too?
- cranium, on 10/22/2007, -2/+8Of course we should rectify that situation immediately by legalizing distribution, right?
- Foundation12, on 10/22/2007, -2/+8Sarcasm? sometimes it's difficult to tell on Digg. But by this logic, we'd have kicked out Carl Sagan. An individual who is very difficult to dismiss as stupid.
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6rotflmao
***** idiot. *nominates for world's stupidest troll* - joklem, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6You are sooo ***** stupid!!!
COMPARING MURDER TO POSSESSING A GRAM OF POT????
LOLZ - NikoKun, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6Wouldn't matter... He smokes with me... XD
- offspring06, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6WHy not ban anyone who drinks alcohol from driving.
- cranium, on 10/24/2007, -1/+7Because this kind of ignorance is like a viral infection of the culture and the truth is the cure?
- exomniac, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7So, by your logic, instead of decriminalizing marijuana, we should take anyone that harvests this plant from the earth and smokes it and throw them behind bars? By your logic, instead of decriminalizing marijuana, taxing it, CREATING REVENUE of billions of dollars that could go towards our insane national deficit, or education, or natural disasters, we should instead SPEND $20,000 of taxpayer dollars every year keeping your friend in prison to teach him that he's a bad person for wanting to relax in a totally natural way. Logical.
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6Impressive.
- NikoKun, on 10/22/2007, -2/+8hmm, Thank you, I didn't know the back story quite that well. Nonetheless this is still a good-news article, to me. lol Progress is still progress, even if the officials didn't necessarily want it... They're getting it now.
- cranium, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7I doubt it, you're quite obviously a complete idiot.
- NikoKun, on 10/22/2007, -1/+6Wow, a non-trolling somewhat intelligent comment? I didn't expect that from you. LOL
While I would debate that the ability of someone who is under the influence of pot, is not quite debilitating enough to restrict driving... Any intoxication from any drug, should be regulated and restricted, when it comes to operating large machinery which could harm other people... You can still get a DUI, if your ability is lowered, even from something like a prescription drug. So I would still support strict restrictions on driving while high.
A test Could be created, if more time was devoted to finding one... but as things are right now, no test exists because pot is illegal completely, so why have a driving test?
I think that if pot was legal, a proper test could be devised, because there would then be a reason for such a test.
We should be treating Marijuana use, more similarly to how recreational Alcohol use is treated... Responsible use should be acceptable and not criminalized... Whereas Irresponsible use should still be punishable. To me, it makes more common sense, than flat our criminalizing one drug, while allowing another more harmful one to be legal. =/ - NikoKun, on 10/22/2007, -1/+6Ok, now that is total *****...
Even if I smoke pot now... I would never drive while high... So why restrict my rights to drive? Are you that incapable of responsibility, that you cannot see other can be responsible people... and a DUI test for pot, COULD be created, if more time was put into finding one.
By your logic there, why not ban everyone who drinks alcohol, from driving? XD - cranium, on 10/22/2007, -2/+7Okay, this guy has to be trolling. Nobody is really that stupid!
- speerross, on 10/22/2007, -2/+7How is smoking weed not ok? Your body, your rules.
- cranium, on 10/22/2007, -4/+9Hey Earl, go back to playing with your sister's panties, the grown-ups are talking here.
