- Defiant001, on 12/04/2008, -1/+59Hmmm, maybe if they take enough copper telephone lines we will finally get the fiber-optic we were promised years ago?
Food for thought :P - crpndeth, on 12/04/2008, -0/+30I can't buy Sudafed without showing my ID and signing a federal log...why can't the regulate copper "recycling". This doesn't seem that hard to me.
- martyogelvie, on 12/04/2008, -2/+27shoot first, ask questions later..
- Rikkochet, on 12/04/2008, -1/+25So regulate the metal buyers. Look at your own town: where would you go to sell off scrap metal? There aren't that many places. Start regulating them like pawn shops, and even require 24 hours before a person selling scrap can collect their money.
Scrappers are as shady as pawn brokers - reel them in. - jimmies, on 12/04/2008, -1/+24I used to ride a commuter rail for 5 years in Chicago until this month. There was more than one occasion where our train was delayed from thieves yanking the copper wiring from the signal crossings. ***** pricks.
- wertach, on 12/04/2008, -0/+22Attention all Organized groups of drug addicts, gang members, and metal thieves! The scrap price is down! You are risking your life for pennies.
I'm an electrician and I have had to go out late at night to repair the stuff that you stole! When I read about one of you getting fried, I get a big smile on my face! One less scumbag that is too lazy to work! - replaysMike, on 12/04/2008, -2/+23it's not theft, it's recycling.
- robbh66, on 12/04/2008, -1/+15it's weight in zinc.
- drakelord, on 12/04/2008, -0/+13At a hospital complex here, all of the main air conditioning units were stolen and stripped of the copper. About $20,000 in damages for maybe $200 in copper at most. Pretty sad.
- pintomp3, on 12/04/2008, -0/+10hopefully they will try to steal the 3rd rail.
- wertach, on 12/04/2008, -0/+10Ever got up at 2AM to repair something in the cold and rain? I don't need the money or the pain.
- yaddayaddayoda, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9That's not the point. A meth head will steal $1000 worth of wiring and get $50 for it. With the repair labor, it takes $1500 to fix the damage. Our business got hit a couple of years ago. They got a $8000 piece of specialized machinery that would have scrapped out at less than $100.
- plundstedt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8Price of copper has dropped 80% in the past few months so this doesn't happen around here anymore. Back in the summer when prices were rocketing out of control things were crazy.
- bella2k, on 12/04/2008, -2/+9If they'd go after the recyclers who OBVIOUSLY accept copper that's been stolen this wouldn't happen.
- robbh66, on 12/04/2008, -1/+8You think the FBI, or any agency, has the capability of stopping something like this? Copper is EVERYWHERE. You can't protect against something that is everywhere, out in the open, undefended. Nothing can stop this but the price going back down (market force), or doing something about the scrappers- which the FBI can't touch under current laws.
Your chosen handle fits. - Wilzer, on 12/04/2008, -1/+8The thieves mistake the FO cable for Copper cable and steal that too.
- Kumah, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7its not it's
- trer, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6How do drug addicts stay coherent enough to be organized?
- thatguy331, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6Most recycling depots DO write down people's names and a general description of what they brought in. On another board I read a guy was able to help police catch the guy who ripped off his stuff by going around to the local recycling areas and see if anyone brought in his stuff. Once place did and gave him the guy's name, he gave it to the police and they caught the perp.
The thing is, do you really think Meth heads care? They're only thinking of thier next score, not if someone will catch them in a week or so. - d0ug18, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7These damn meth heads who steal copper really are messing with things. The major Highways in my town were constantly having their copper wires removed and a long stretch of road had no lights, leaving bad driving conditions.
- Dumbledorito, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Given that the FBI can't handle the crimes on Wall Street because they've been forced to deal with too much NSA/Homeland Security ***** in the forms of mountains of indescriminate wiretapping data.
I'm amazed they can find time to notice crimes in the local paper. Go team Bush! - oboshoe, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5This is actually a very very old problem.
The first telegraphs lines were frequently stolen by American Indians and others for their copper content. - Ajajadude, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5No one ever said you had to be smart to steal *****.
- CrazedLeper, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6Waterboard in between.
- Solstice, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5It's difficult to efficiently transmit electrical power over glass fiber. Copper still has its place in power transmission. You're correct in that the copper data cables need to go, though.
- TheNyquilKid, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5I have been looking for a house and so many we would see had the copper missing.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -4/+9Really? Copper thieves? Reminds me of Bubs in "The Wire."
- SirBrittanicus, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5Yeh'll neveh get mee coppers, see?
- WilliamDavis, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4http://www.coinflation.com
That will tell you. - specialK16, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Ever seen light posts in Brazil? Some have some sort of round fence near the top so ***** like this won't happen.
- e1ioan, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5The recycling places who accept copper without asking questions should be closed down and the owners put in jail. Only that will take care of the problem.
- jimmies, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4haha! Now that would be sweet. Sautee'd thief.
- oboshoe, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4damnit.
I was just going to post the something similiar.
No secondary market for old broker fiber. So telcos, if you don't want your lines stolen. go fiber. - Rivetgeek, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4it happens all the time. even a decade ago when i was in high school one day some genius tried to steal the hot wire from our 150,000 200 amp sub station at the school. supposedly it blew his arm off and flash fried him.
- 1smartguy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3The main target is the copper/aluminum evaporator and condenser coils.
- wertach, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Oh, something else, Organized groups of drug addicts, gang members, and metal thieves. I'm carrying a Colt 45 semi. So, if you are hiding in the bushes waiting to rob me........Be warned, I am a very good shot...........
- 1smartguy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Not if it's pre 1982.
- UnFriendlyFire, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4EVERYBODY PANIC!!!!!!
- cybrguy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Its called surprise recycling followed by misappropriation of recompense!
- asgardshill, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Come and get me, copper!
(No, wait ...)
Criswell Predicts that the same thing is going to start happening to all those $2000 a pop solar panels that are getting hung out there. Ganking just one or two of those a week takes about 3 minutes and can easily keep a meth head tweaked up to his eyebrows. - adkenc, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2wow, this was the first comment remotely similar to " how many times is this on the front page?"
or at least that its an old story... - oboshoe, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2high tension copper electrified at 13,200 volts isn't nearly as much fun to steal as t1 lines runn at -48vdc
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2@robbh66- Yeah I do. You get off your ass and start probing the scrapyards asking who is turning in massive amounts of copper. You know, the kind they use in power grids, electrical infrastructure. It's real tough. You could even send out some memos stating the problem and what happens to asswipes that pay out to the copper thieves.
I take it you work for the FBI...*rolls eyes* - vidar808, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2So, its like someone taking the coffee you just ordered, pouring it out, and using the cup for their own order. It may be recycling, but its also still theft. ;)
- cybrguy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I concur. Maybe recyclers should be forced to write down drivers license numbers for un-identifiable copper scrap. Provided the area has a problem of this kind.
- jun2san, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I work for a construction company and one of our projects had the AC units stolen twice in one month, (yep, they were taken the second time after being replaced AND locked behind a chain link fence, someone drove a truck right through the fence and was kind enough to fix the fence after taking the units). Yeah, it sucks because we had to have our insurance replace them both times.
All this for a few dollars worth of copper? Geez. - etx313, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2You think I'm gonna go down for the whole ***** machine?! SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIITTT!!!
- inactive, on 12/06/2008, -0/+2Wouldn't want to be an electrician working on powerlines then, in your crappy country.
- wishninja, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2"What kind of dope fiend be talking about tomorrow? Tomorrow ain't *****. "
best show ever produced! - cybrguy, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Broken window philosophy is broken.
