- ToonPang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+108"Well this is a bummer for fans of the Captain"
Well at least we still have Capitan Obvious. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+84WTF? I'm not really a fan, but it seems like a low blow to end it with him getting shot by a sniper! Why doesn't it end in some epic battle? Not a freaking sniper!
- hode, on 10/12/2007, -8/+46Consider the symbolism of Captain America dying. History's best stories comment on their times.
- AstroKid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40I hate it when the AP posts major spoilers for comics I read. :( (They also posted about the ending of Civil War #2). I trust Ed Brubaker (the writer) though, so i'll still pick it up.
- silverbax, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44Marvel trying to recreate the 'Death of Superman' hype, I see.
- koonchu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36Buried as LAME. This is a major ***** SPOILER.
- amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Sure... they bring back Bucky and kill Captain America. Brilliant.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23that article's pretty weak. There's a much better article on Newsarama
http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/CapAmerica/DDream/Cap25.html
major spoilers for Captain America #25 - 1KrazyKorean, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27Well this is a bummer for fans of the Captain
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I pointed this out in a digg story that popped up earlier than this one already. I dont care what Quesada or Brubaker say, Cap isnt staying dead. Steve has been shot in the head, back during the Priest Cap/Falcon arc, pronounced dead, and he healed up just fine. They dont call him a super-soldier for nothing.
Frank Castle will wear the uniform for a while, Crossbones and Scourge will be looked at as suspects (Scourge shot USAgent in a similar manner a while back), and the Winter Soldier will be in the story also.
In the meantime, Tony Stark starts having second thoughts about his stance on the superhero Registration Act, and about how much he valued Cap as a friend even while they were rivals, perhaps driving himself to seek solace at the bottom of a glass (yet again.)
Then, Steve will pop up completely fine, and give us all the backstory about healing up and training in S.H.I.E.L.D.s secret facility.
Anybody taking bets? :-)
@bonhamsghost
Then take your elitist rants and extremely small tastes back to the comic shop. Comics are a business, and characters are brands. Even Bucky came back, its all about the dollar, just like the rest of the world.
Now, many of the characters have significantly changed over the years. Look at the difference between the original Batman and Robin, and the current. All camp gone, and Dick Grayson is now his own man, and a damn good hero in his own right. Thats just one example of a multitude. - Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Not to big of a bummer, he will be retconned within a few months, especially with what punisher did to stiltman's funeral.
But that doesn't matter, they are all ***** when hulk gets back. - bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Agreed. Since the article mentions that a Captain America movie is in development....does anyone really think Cap's going to stay dead for long?
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I'm pretty sure that's the idea.
- Aggort, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Anyone think it could be symbolism of this country?
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30"Civil war was the greatest thing marvel has ever done"
Either you are the master of sarcasm, or you havent been reading comics very long mate. - LucerinRed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20"Either you are the master of sarcasm, or you havent been reading comics very long mate."
Actually I own every spiderman comic from 1980-2000, I stopped reading when they brought mary jane back, again. I really wanted to stop reading when they brought Magneto back for the 3rd time, but I hung on for my love of spidey.
but better rephrased, "Civil War is the best thing marvel could have done" They needed to do something, something major, and they did it, they destroyed their own universe and they got me reading again. - mojoel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14DC and Marvel both like to make money, though. They don't do this for free.
- libertao, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19aaaaaaaaahahahahaha you called HIM a 'dork'.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11DAMNIT, thanks for doing this! I wanted to actually be surprised when this happens!
On another note I bet he is one of the final five! - psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@mrfreezeixp
There was an epic battle. It was in civil war #7, but captain america pussied out when he decided that this war that he was waging wasn't good for the people. So he quit, allowed himself to be arrested, and now this (although I haven't read the issue yet, thanks digg for ***** up my comic book experience). Yeah I'm kind of glad he died though.... - Harmutt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14@hode.
I came here to write that too. America dying is a real fear and possibility in our time...hopefully [Captain] America is back from the brink in January 2009. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"True, but the writer hinted that someone else may don the costume eventually"
Actually, it's a pretty viable rumor that Frank Castle, The Punisher, is going to pick up his mantle and be Cap for at least some time. Punisher picked up Cap's mask at the end of CW 7 - gnawph2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A sniper? Lame.
- RyanPT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11For **** sake, guys. Spoilers without damn warning.
- RedStateRetard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There will probably be multiple Capt. America's.
1) official pick by the U.S. govt. Capt. America
2) Self appointed "true spirit of capt America"
3) Xenophobic Captain America with racist chants
4) Out-sourced H1-B capt am.... - KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"oh well, he's a pussy anyway. WOW I HAVE FRISBEE SHIELD POWERS"
You just called a man who can bench press over 1200 pounds and run a mile in one minute, not to mention posessing nearly limitless stamina reserves, a pussy? So who exactly do you consider a "real man?" - allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8you can't blame the AP - it's Marvel that sends out the spoiler press release (just like they did with the Spider-Man unmasked spoiler at the end of Civil War #2)
The send the info to the major news outlets the day before the comic comes out, so that on Wednesday there will be a big buzz about it & hopefully drive more people into comic shops. It sucks for the loyal readers, but you can't really hate on them for trying to generate publicity. - jbarket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, he was really one dimensional when he led those opposed to the Superhero Registration Act in Civil War. I'm sure *everybody* saw that coming a country mile away.
- HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Buried as lame because of the spoiler in the headline.
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"infact if it wasnt for the ultimates Captin America would be a footnote in marvel history"
WTF??? I'm not a big Cap fan, but come on... sounds like someone started reading comics um... yesterday. - zombiedepot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Smoking pot and playing hockey.
- jbarket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not only have they killed him before, but many people other than Steve Rogers have worn the suit over the years.
Still, I have a hard time imagining him staying dead. It's hard to believe that only three years into Volume 5 they'd waste him. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'm sorry, but did you just say "Frank Castle" would be the next Captain America? As in "The Punisher"? Wow, I have been away from the Marvel comics universe for a loooong time. I guess symbolically it fits given the current state of war, but still...
- Ocelot13, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17CAPTAIN CAAAAVVVVEEEEMAAAAANNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"They've become too dilluted and crazy all in some vain effort to boost ratings."
Dont fool yourself into thinking this is something new. Remember in the 90s, the Death of Superman, Bane breaking Batman, the death of Hal Jordan and the GLCorps?
How about in the 70s, with the advent of a blaxsploitation Green Lantern, John Stewart, and Spidey donning the black costume?
How about even further back, to when Superman gained the ability to fly, and more abilities as the writers wrote? How about when a superhero was created as a propaganda machine, a superhero named Captain America?
Comics is a business, and unfortunately they dont always pander to our childhood fantasies and how we think "our" heroes should be treated. - biggrz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8SPOILERS = AUTO BLOCK
- jcdickerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's all a dream in the mind of an autistic child staring at a snowglobe of an island. There, you can stop watching.
- aggrazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Snape shot Cap'n?
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I'm sorry, but did you just say "Frank Castle" would be the next Captain America? As in "The Punisher"? "
Theyve been building that up since Civil War #7 or so. Plus, Marvel likes to mask switch characters for some reason. Daredevil/Iron Fist, Peter Parker and his clone, etc. - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Time to start a betting pool on when he will be back.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I heard Captain Planet kicked his ass...
- gte879p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Surrender?"
"Do you think this A on my Head Stands for France?"
Writing worthy of Warren Ennis himself. - jbarket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Same.
Cap has been my favorite super hero since I was a kid, and my jaw is honest to god on the floor right now. - Thuktun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@KyleRayner "How about in the 70s, with [...] Spidey donning the black costume?"
"The 70s" includes 1984? - cresswga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5...then may I recommend:
Sandman
Preacher
Y - The Last Man
and if you don't mind manga; Battle Angel Alita and Death Note
All are created by a single unchanging team (except for the artist in the case of Sandman but the writer stayed the same) - Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5what the?? i loved using him in Marvel vs Capcom series. Him and wolverine. I wish they would make a part 3 that looks more of our age.
- robdiggity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My money's on Bucky/Winter Soldier becoming the new Cap.
- MMXII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's symbolic of the state of American today. National I.D cards the North American Union and 9/11. This is all a way to show that the True America is Dying. This will also effect the rest of the heroes in Marvel tremendously.
"Marvel says the comic story line was intentionally written as an allegory to current real-life issues like the Patriot Act, the War on Terror and the September 11 attacks.
"Every child knew about 9/11," says Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Comics. "If [he] could see a TV he knew what 9/11 was. The other similarities [to] things going on are just part of storytelling."" -CNN - koonchu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Marvel (like any other comic company) is full of *****. Did you guys see what they did to Captain Marvel? He died of cancer back in the 80's; what better way to show the frailty of the human spirit than have him succumb to disease despite his powers, right?
Well, they're bringing him back and going to "cure" him of his cancer. - Ozymandias42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There are some good resources. The critically acclaimed stuff sometimes gets bound into graphic novels. For instance, Sandman (the best comic book ever) is available as a 10 (plus some bonus books) volume set, the Watchmen (the best comic book ever) is available as a single volume, as is The Dark Knight Returns (the best comi--you get the idea). They're cheaper than the comics purchased one by one would've been (although reading all of Sandman will still set you back).
