- m3mn0n, on 10/10/2007, -8/+156I'd digg this but the title is way too sensationalized. How does a single guy turn into "citizens"?
I clicked this expecting to hear about mass rioting and dozens of cops killed. - tunapez, on 10/10/2007, -29/+120Not funny at all. If you think you can do a better job, step the ***** up!
Shooting cops is real, it ain't a ***** deranged, ***** video game people. Imagine a job where a simple, daily duty (traffic stop) can be fatal. This blows. ***** the gangster wannabes. - arunforce, on 10/10/2007, -9/+57One gunman != citizens.
***** sensationalist news. - Fhwqhgads, on 10/10/2007, -6/+45I sympathize with cops, as human beings being gunned down by psychopaths.
l also sympathize with people who are arrested and oppressed for doing activities which directly harm nobody else, and laws that are designed specifically to extort money from people into city government coffers. If police stuck to REAL crime there would be far less contempt towards them in society. - WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37Following all the stories of abuse by Florida cops recently, I can't say I'm all that surprised by this development. Not that I condone vigilante justice, but people should just realize that this isn't taking place in a vacuum, and police departments everywhere in the US, and in Florida in particular, need to make sure they aren't feeding public hostility towards law enforcement by acting inappropriately and abusing the power they were entrusted with.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27I just came back from South Florida where this is all over the news. Most recently, the single gunman was responsible for killing one cop. The other cops were killed by several other individuals. Thus, "citizens" is a correct assessment.
- Avor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25Whether they know the risks or not does not make it right for others to try and kill them.
- darthsabbath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Here's my take on this:
Killing cops is awful. I don't condone it at all, and I feel terrible for these cops and their families. Odds are, they were good cops who wanted to help people.
That being said....
The police, as a whole, need to get off of this "law enforcement officer" shtick. In some (maybe most, who knows?) municipalities, officers are encouraged to write tickets to generate revenue. We've got the DEA and local police tearing homes and families apart in the war on drugs. At point in time, the police were "peace officers." When did this change? Why are we sending officers into protests to incite violence? Why are officers so keen to use tasers?
Yes, I understand that we're talking about the bad apples. But where are the good apples? How come they're not standing up against the bad cops? How come these bad cops typically get away with a slap on the wrist (not all, but most that I've seen)?
Is it any wonder that people hate the police? They're scared of the cops. When you're dealing with an officer, you don't know if you've got a good one who's looking out for you, or a bad one who's out to show how big his cop-dick is. So I don't blame people for automatically assuming that all police are bad. After all, that's the excuse the cops use... "Well, you never know when one of them is going to take a swing or pull a gun on you."
Well, you never know when one of them is going to tase you or crack your head in.
I want to like the cops again. But the onus is on them. THEY have to get rid of the corruption and bad cops. I can't do it for them. - Fawkes, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25With police behavior such as this:
"Try and talk back... to me again," yelled Sergeant Kuehnlein. "I bet I could say you resisted arrest or something. You want to come up with something? I come up with nine things."
...what to do? - mishabear, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22The one time most of us ever deal with a cop is when they are handing us a traffic ticket. What kind of impression does that give the average citizen? You know they are out there to serve and protect us but we feel like we are ALL criminals in their minds and we know most of us aren't. I can sympathize with them because I know there are idiots and scofflaws out there but damn, I want to be treated with a little respect myself as well. How about a little leniency wnen I DON'T have a gun or a stash of drugs?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19"DIE PIGS!", screamed the crazed GTA fanatic, while killing hookers with his AK 47.
Jack Thompson's fairy tale. - Amablue, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Not wanting cops and wanting cops dead are two completely different things.
- staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17***** man. I live in south florida too and I remember on the news the first cop killer was a hispanic that lived in pembroke pines and the dude with the AK is white. After the past few bouts of news I have to wonder about digg and the racism.
Secondly, this could very well be a retaliation after miami and broward cops go about their business and arrested a large amount of gang members in a short time. 180 was busted in a weekend down in miami. And are gun laws are as such... that it is all or nothing. If you make the decision to pick up a gun and shoot at them, there is such a strong consequence you might as well go all the way.
And this is not about citizen's this is about criminals plain and simple. Citizens do not feel the need to shoot at cops when they feel the need. These criminals are doing it to cover their tracks and make a getaway. I personally hope they catch all of them. - MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -12/+28What are you retarded? You want the killing of cops to turn into a trend?
Go die. - 8300dvo, on 10/10/2007, -15/+29well when your bleeding on the street after being mugged or something, i hope you tell that to there faces. but im sure you will all of a sudden realise you love them when ther helping you hold your own guts in your stomach...
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16*sigh*
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21Is that what you say about the guys in Iraq too? It's ok because they knew they would risk their lives? If so, you're just a douchebag.
- Fallout911, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15 I as a Liberal Support the Second amendment!
We can all agree that what has happened here in Miami in the past few weeks is terrible nobody should be murdered while on the job.
But it seems to me that this has given the anti-gun people fuel for their proposals to outlaw semi automatic weapons or maybe even all types of firearms and this is completely unacceptable.
The second amendment gives us the power to protect ourselves from the same thugs that seem to be going on a rampage in our city.
The second amendment also gives us one of the most if not THE most important power to protect ourselves from the government.
One example was given yesterday when the Miami Police Dept forced innocent citizens out of their homes for hours in order for them to carry out the excessive man hunt to avenge one of their own.
This was a clear abuse of power and is probably illegal.
A court order in the form of a warrant has to be served in order for police to remove a civilian from her/his home.
The display of absolute power shown by the MDPD and Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez should be a wake up call and not a call to relinquish our rights.
Protect the constitution protect our future as FDR put it “Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself”.
(Iwrote this a few days ago and sent it to my friends) - csmanzarek, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21This is ***** horrible, people need to realize especially after this who missouri cop thing. not all cops are bad, some cops are out to seriously protect and serve the public. here in connecticut, yea, there are a couple of dick cops, especially in some of the richer towns, but most of them are some of the nicest people ive ever met. they really care, and the fact that people are pulling ak-47 on them on a busy city street for a routine traffic stop, that ***** isnt right. every profession has a few ass holes, we all work with them, but police are generally out to help us, not to hurt.
- gustasonfrever, on 10/10/2007, -14/+26How are they gangster wannabees? Shooting a cop is pretty legit
- ZogDog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14So what you're saying is that because there are a few bad apples, you should just go ahead and brutally massacre the entire orchard? Are you that disgruntled? How about we take this analogy, anyone at your school who was a bully represents everyone in your entire school. I saw we get a lynch mob and tie your ass up because you went to school with those bullies. Serves you right, prick.
- diggface5000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Actually earlier that day he had committed armed robbery and didn't want to go to jail... that's why he was driving erratically and that's why he shot them.
- halavais, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11See, I neither respect nor disrespect his dad, because I don't know the man. Simply putting on a uniform and carrying a gun does not, in my book, command respect. If he has done his job admirably, then that commands respect.
It's too bad the comments on Digg are either "Support the cops" or "***** the police." I think that a lot of police departments have a lot of bad apples, and that good cops and citizens should stand shoulder to shoulder to get rid of them. (And by "get rid of" I mean fire, not shoot.) - rabidmonkey1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15You know, I am a young man growing up in suburban America.
I'm not a spoiled rich kid but I'm not struggling to pay the bills either.
This is not so much a commentary on the article itself - I never want anyone to be murdered or hurt. This is just more of a response to a general observation I have. My sympathies go out to the families of the fallen officers.
Every day on Digg there seems to be another (some might say anecdotal) story about how law enforcement is screwing everyday American citizens. There is the Missouri cop rampage among others, the endless lawless detentions at stores, Ed and Elaine Bradley, and today, a story about a man who went to jail because he wanted to use the 50 cent highway tokens he purchased!
I'm sorry, as much as I feel murder is wrong, I don't feel too bad for the police here. In fact, if the current trends of law enforcement continue, I think you will see more of this. By and large, all my experiences with the Police have been very negative. They have all been very verbally abusive towards me, lying to get whatever documents and access they see fit. The only times I have ever had a sort of reasonable interaction with a cop was when I flashed a PBA card, said I knew two captains, and told him I worked at a local business where the department received a discount (which I do). If I hadn't, I would have no doubt been given a hefty fine and a day in court to "defend" myself in a system that is designed to take money from Citizens, or at least cost them too much to even bother defending themselves.
I look around me and I see all these laws and regulations put into place restricting what the founding fathers would consider to by my endowed freedoms, usually accompanied by a monetary penalty - a sort of unapportioned tax. Our country was founded on the principal of no taxation without representation. English died because of things like the Tea Tax. I honestly believe that some of what the cops are feeling now is because of the way they treat American Citizens. Call it blowback if you will.
You don't get respect for wearing a uniform ever. Respect is a mutual term. If you treat people like humans, you will get treated that way back. But if you are exploitative and domineering, well, don't expect to not feel the consequences for that.
American's need to learn and excercise their rights. The REAL ID is coming in 2008. The paramiliterization of our police forces is more and more evident every day as we try to fight off "terrorism." Unless American's are okay with the way things are going, we are going to end up like the Shenzen China (see here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/12/business/worldbusiness/12security.html?ex=1190088000&en=a4171c2e5a732db6&ei=5070)
America is strong because of it's checks and balances. For too long the police have been unchecked and unbalanced. Learn your rights and stick with them. - realclark, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15I bet this guy killed the cops because of playing too much vice city.....because video games are responsible for most of the disorder in america
- ohsin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+162 stars are up on them.
- Avor, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15You are missing the point. How many construction workers are killed by another person for spite?
- vertinox, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Once your dead, the point of how it happens is moot to you. It might be a big deal to those who survive you, but you are not going to care one way or another on what happens once you are dead. (Heaven, hell, or rotting in the ground makes life on earth a moot point) Statistically, construction and car accidents are more deadly than murder and than isn't counting murder of police so generally the average police officer will not be killed in the line of duty.
- Nudar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10What is a full blooded Hispanic? Hispanics aren't even a race. They're a conglomeration of blacks, indians and whites in various percentages.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10There would be far less contempt if they did one thing: Police themselves as well.
Although it does happen, the fact that cops will look out for other cops even when they are making the profession lok bad and grossly abusing their position undermines all cops credibility, making cop and citizens alike worse off. - Eeor3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Thi [cop killer] thing happened where I live once in the last 20 years and they say that the police have to be impatial and not let emotion get in the way but, the mug shot of the suspect showed different. They wouldnt comment on how the suspect got the bruises after saying he was aprehended 'without incedent'.
- diggface5000, on 10/10/2007, -12/+21I don't understand the hate towards cops. Of course there are a few bad ones. Survey ANY profession and you'll find some awful people. Most cops would put their life on the line in a heart beat to protect your whiny asses.
- ZogDog, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18@SATX: People like you make me sick, my dad's a cop and you want him to be killed too? Thanks bud, it makes me feel so good about the world I live in.
- vertinox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Its called dark humor. Its how the British moral survived the blitz and most soldiers survive combat without going insane. If you can't laugh about bad things sometimes you will so depressed you can't get on with life.
- rlh1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I guess those police are getting in the way of your Meth business goals?
- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11well there just so happens to be just such a magical dream land, it's located in several african nations as well as some areas of the middle and far east.
- bns1201, on 10/10/2007, -14/+23@ m3mn0n
i live in south florida....its not sensationalized at all....cops are getting killed left and right these days....but this was the most recent and one of the worst....i dont know why but about 7 cops have been killed within the past 2 months and thats a lot....routine traffic stops are now full blown traffic stops with nearly 3 cop cars for back up. and its funny how every one of these cops have been killed by an african american.....makes one wonder. - aznewsh, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Whilst I can certainly see why you might get pissed at being handed a ticket, killing a cop is hardly fitting punishment - get real
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12What difference does it make? They have no obligation to protect individuals, so you're going to die bleeding in the street no matter what you say.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Why do you have to make fun of people who masturbate in their own feces?
We have feelings too. - ZogDog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11@commernie: sounds like you're the ignorant one... scratch that, you ARE ignorant.
- TheSaladMan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Err I think you're missing the point Mr Psycho killer wannabe, You're not supposed to want to kill anyone.
- NikoKun, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12The title made it sound like some revolution was starting up in Florida, against a police presents... but in reality it was only 1 or a small few, individuals... =/
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I respect your dad a lot for what he does. Most of Digg does not share that respect, but in the real world people do. I like knowing that if something bad is happening, I can always call an officer to come help me, possibly risking his life to do so.
- wafflez, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12what, they have more balls?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Amen! Yall have no clue how ***** up the police are down here.
- consoneo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Had a creed-o when I served as a Medic... "Help first, then laugh."
- staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Honestly, I belive crime should be enforced but to beat up teenagers is another thing. Being arrested should be enough. I have started to see videos of cops shoving skaters and threatening people with camera's and I start to wonder what actually happens at the scene of these crimes.
- Borramakot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9@Fhwqhgads
If you are going to quote Rand, actually quote her, or at least say where you got it. - Oomsoup, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Um, it says "Citizens" because it's happened more than a few times in the last month. The article is not just written about 1 particular incident which you might know if you had read it.
