- bubs, on 05/14/2009, -2/+13This is one of those cases where I can say "older than the internet" and it might actually be true.
- Llanowar, on 05/14/2009, -2/+13I think I've seen that picture about 50 times on my first day on the internet.
Keeps astonishing me though. The brain works in funny ways.
With many visual tricks I can clearly see it after I know the trick. But with this one my brain is still convinced they're completely different shades of gray. - nahsrocketeer75, on 05/13/2009, -0/+9The "proof" view is particularly fascinating because, at least to my eye, the shade of gray changes as you stare at it. I had to use my hand to cover the cylinder casting the shadow in order to get a consistent color. Cool.
- Solkre, on 05/14/2009, -0/+8Stupid brain is always lying to me!
- NathanielJ, on 05/14/2009, -2/+8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_illusion
If an illusion is so old and well-known that it's at the top of the Wikipedia page titled "optical illusion", then what the hell is it doing on the front page of digg? - merelogic, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6Ok so I'm not only color blind...
- dcipjr, on 05/14/2009, -0/+5Try opening the image up in a image editor; use the lasso tool to select the B square, and drag it up alongside the A square....it almost seems to change shades mid-drag. Very cool.
- nipterink, on 05/14/2009, -4/+8i don't know what's worse, this hitting the front page or the fact that it's on an MIT website. this belongs in a highlights magazine from the 80s.
- TallestSkil, on 05/14/2009, -3/+7Allow me to translate: "Hello, gentlemen. It is my professional opinion that the image in question has been opened with a common digital image editing software and altered to produce a result that, while visibly sound, does not properly represent the actual world as it is. As such, I feel that it is my duty to alert the public to this fact so as not to allow the spread of falsified information."
Alternate translation: "Lawl, gyz, I'm a douche." - bobdigi, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4Check out this bad boy. The center of both "crosses" is the same color.

- 1x253, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2That whole pattern recognition thing is really hyped up and overrated, huh?

- khaosx2030, on 05/14/2009, -2/+3Well the letters are the same color. I'll give it that.
- phishneslo, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1it is sure encouraging to start the day thinking my eyes and brain are broken.

- macslut, on 05/14/2009, -3/+2This may be old, but somehow I've missed it all these years. When I saw it, I didn't believe it. I looked at the proof pic and thought for sure it was a hoax..."clearly the B square on the right is darker than the B square on the left". I figured I would open it up in Photoshop™ and reveal the true color values, and then...WTF???
I then saw dcipjr's post and tried dragging the square...very cool indeed. - prolikewhoa, on 05/14/2009, -1/+0Whats with all the old illusions?? BURY
- thesmallone29, on 05/14/2009, -5/+3this is the oldest photo on the internets
