Charlie Rose Face Plants To Save His MacBook Air
techcrunch.com — "He was carrying a newly purchased MacBook Air made a quick decision while falling: sacrifice the face, protect the computer. “In doing so, he pretty much hit the pavement face first, unfortunately,” they said. Luckily the MacBook Air survived the fall. “The Macbook Air is fine, he showed us the blood stains on it this morning.”

- cmccool, on 03/18/2008, -11/+238there are apple fans...and then there is charlie rose!
- bariswheel, on 03/18/2008, -1/+35One of the few highly respected interviewers left in American television. Pulling no punches and asking lots of follow up questions. His interviews have always been deep and insightful. He also does lots of homework before interviewing his guests, none of this Larry King "So, tell me about your book?" nonsense. Oh, and they're all available online.
http://www.charlierose.com/home- vornan19, on 03/18/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I don't watch tv anymore but any time I watched Charlie he would come off as having read the book, seen the movie, done the footwork, gained an understanding in whatever subject to be able to pull off great interviews.
- FatLoser, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1Why don't you watch TV anymore? Charlie Rose is the only interviewer I can stomach to watch... he clearly knows his stuff, and isn't putting on a show for anybody. He legitimately seems curious to know the answers to the questions he asks. Tavis Smiley, not so much, but there are definitely interesting programs on TV.
- vornan19, on 03/18/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I don't watch tv anymore but any time I watched Charlie he would come off as having read the book, seen the movie, done the footwork, gained an understanding in whatever subject to be able to pull off great interviews.

- rpgmaker, on 03/18/2008, -13/+4And there are idiots, which is BOTH.
- JasonHaley, on 03/18/2008, -11/+6Read the article more carefully. Charlie Rose didn't call himself an Apple fan, he said he's a high-tech fan of the "latest gadgets" which is why he's photographed showing off a Samsung and a Blackberry, two products that have little to do with Apple. I know the Apple fanboys try to recruit more members but people like Charlie Rose don't care about being a corporation's fanboy, they just want the latest toys by whoever makes them... sometimes that's Apple, sometimes it's Microsoft, sometimes it's Linux or some other company,
- JasonHaley, on 03/18/2008, -6/+3*My mistake: It's a Motorola not a Samsung. But my point still stands the same.
- JasonHaley, on 03/18/2008, -3/+4Holly *****, dugg down by fanboys who can't accept that Rose isn't a fanboy like them.
- carpeclunes, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1Shut the ***** up.
- brainboy77, on 03/18/2008, -11/+2dude, a macbook air? you're charile rose. you can definitly afford to lose 2 grand. plus, it is the ***** computer ever. If i had to choose between a clunky computer that actually had a ***** optical drive or a macbook air with very crappy specs and no customization, i'd choose the clunky piece of *****.
- screamokid, on 03/19/2008, -1/+3when was the last time you used your optical drive on a laptop? all my music is from the web or was on my old ibook when i riped my cds. dvds...... haven't bought one in ages and i pay 30 bucks a month for fast internet so bittorrent is my friend
all pc users diss the macbook air for not having a optical dive but THATS what a ultra portable laptop is, lenovo makes one with no drive, sony and a bunch of others so stfu is all im saying

- Augie1969, on 03/18/2008, -9/+1Probably in the minority here, but I am digging this comment down due to the fact that you're too lazy to CAPITALIZE A PROPER NAME'S FIRST LETTER.
- darkciti2, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3Thanks for the latest meme...
- chris1012, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1It sucks that he had to go that far to protect his notebook, my toshiba laptop has been dropped several times and several feet onto hard concrete and still works the same as the first day I bought it. Macbooks suck when it comes to damage control, they shatter just as easily as a krzr cellphone lens (that means it falls apart easily).
- SlimFastForYou, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1If Chuck Norris ever fought Charlie Rose, his MacBook Air would get a black eye.

Damn aliens. - yayintertubes, on 03/18/2008, -23/+1rofl my comment gets -28 diggs. That's petty guys.
- TnTBass, on 03/18/2008, -2/+17Petty? No. You are getting dugg down for posting a question that was answered in the article. On top of that, as pointed out, you asked a question that you didn't even need the article to answer, you could have just read the description.
The second reason you are getting dugg down is because you obviously only wanted a comment high up in the comment list.
If you make good comments, you will get dugg up. Don't blame the community for your shortcomings.- yayintertubes, on 03/18/2008, -10/+2Seriously, lighten up. - kino101, on 03/18/2008, -38/+18Rose is a hero, best interviews on tv...wonder who decked him and why the story...who hits the ground with their eye? Sorry, just not buying it...
- bromac, on 03/18/2008, -1/+8Someone who face plants.
- Snowy, on 03/18/2008, -2/+44You don't understand how black eyes usually form. You don't usually get them from getting hit in the eye, that is a common misconception, you get them from being hit in the forehead. The blood from a bruise then drains down to the pocket under your eye. If you've ever gotten a bad sprained ankle that bruised up than you'll get a bruise on your heel, because that is where the blood pools. Judging by the band aid on his forehead that is where he landed and it makes perfect sense for him to have a black eye from that wound.
- kmb1794, on 03/18/2008, -10/+3I think he got hit in the face with a boner
- hokie47, on 03/18/2008, -1/+7Thanks snowy you learn something new everyday.

- gwhardyiv, on 03/18/2008, -7/+1Agreed. If his nose were broken, I might buy it.
Looks like he threw his face at somebody's fist. - hauntedchippy, on 03/18/2008, -4/+2Who decked him? The pothole....? The one mentioned in the article...?
- jbnumba1, on 03/18/2008, -3/+1I agree. That's why we have eye sockets.
- dn11, on 03/18/2008, -1/+7No, believe it or not you can get a black eye by falling down like this if you land right on your face, I've seen it happen.
- mlvassallo, on 03/18/2008, -0/+8He is an older dude. You get weird bruises from several different traumas at different stages in life. There is potential that the fact he was hit in the forehead caused the blood to drain down and form a bruise under his eye. Poor fella. I do like how he isn't using much makeup to hide it on TV. He is the man. Colbert eat your heart(wrist) out.
- Raian, on 03/18/2008, -3/+2It was the faux male prostitute that decked him and stole his wallet... woops ;)
- UncleCrapper, on 03/18/2008, -1/+7Charlie Rose is a good interviewer, but I find he interrupts too much. Thankfully his show appears on PBS so there is an hour for his guests to fully express themselves despite Rose's meandering interview style. I think James Lipton, of "Inside the Actor's Studio" fame is a much better interviewer as his deliberate, methodical style puts his subjects at ease yet ensures solid control of the interview.
- mlvassallo, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3But Rose is much less creepy than Lipton. And Lipton only interviews actors. Sometimes I don't give a ***** what an actor thinks.
- capillya, on 03/18/2008, -16/+5A little makeup couldn't hurt...

- kiiwii, on 03/18/2008, -7/+168I think most people would do anything they could to save something that costs $2000+
- mlostracco, on 03/18/2008, -2/+42I broke my elbow falling off a raised mezzanine while holding a $5000 video camera. It was all reflex, pretty much—my brain was like, "OH, NO! THE CAMERA!" rather than "OH, NO! MY BODY!" I would have rather it defaulted to the latter.
- zookee, on 03/18/2008, -2/+10makes sense, its cheaper to heal wounds than heal your wallet :)
- EwMo, on 03/18/2008, -0/+6While taking pictures of the recent eclipse, I had $1500+ of camera stuff in my hand and slipped down a wet, grassy hill. The only caring words I got from onlookers was "is your camera okay?" I didn't care though. Those were MY only thoughts anyway. And yes, it was okay. And the lens and everything else.
- dn11, on 03/18/2008, -8/+3If Charlie Rose actually paid for it, I'm sure he could have gotten a new one for free anyhow.
- santaliqueur, on 03/18/2008, -13/+2Or $1,799?
- santaliqueur, on 03/18/2008, -7/+3Digg me down, but that IS the price.
- sagat, on 03/18/2008, -7/+1What you have some cunning insight that allows you to avoid paying tax?
YOU ARE DUGG DOWN.- santaliqueur, on 03/18/2008, -4/+4No, I have the cunning insight to CHECK THE ***** PRICE.
MacBook Air, no SSD, $1,799.

- santaliqueur, on 03/18/2008, -4/+4No, I have the cunning insight to CHECK THE ***** PRICE.
- freshyill, on 03/18/2008, -4/+17Last I checked, they cost $1799. $3098 if you spring for the SSD, but let's face it-- If you pay that much, you deserve a black eye.
- Mohanned, on 03/18/2008, -2/+6I'm sure Charlie Rose can afford a few new Apple MacBook Airs, however reconstructive surgery on his ugly visage will cost much more. Ha, just kidding; his interviews are awesome; anyone see the one with Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cauron and uhh, Alejandro González Iñárritu? (Yeah I googled that last one).
- mmooiisseess, on 03/18/2008, -1/+1yeah i saw it they it was a great year for the trio del toro had pans labrynth, cauron children of men and inarritu babel good interview and an impressive line up for the three, although i am a bit biased being mexican i thought their films deserved alot more than they got in terms of oscars that year...
- doitchinkstyle, on 03/18/2008, -0/+2Yeah seriously. All of the digg users have all read similar stories where people have done some nasty things to save something so miniscule, such as an iPhone, which potentially cost them $600+.... I mean personally I haven't had an incident like this but if it is an instant reaction no matter how great the item is, then I think it is reasonable. But putting money over ur own life...I think it's a no brainerrrrr. haha.

- exscind, on 03/18/2008, -4/+1Charlie Rose's black eye is considerably less predictable than a cyclical economy.
The economy is certainly in rough shape, but I strongly disagree with your assessment of the stock market. We're currently in a downward slope, but the indices are at the same levels they were a couple years ago, having trended upward from 2003 to late-2007 (when the Dow hit an all-time high). Once the Subprime mess is somewhat settled (it will take years to truly get sorted out, but will also carry significantly less market impact), things will be back to trending up again. A prudent investor would look for buy opportunities that will yield strong growth when (not "if") the market recovers. - KeepOffMyLawn, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3Aw, don't be too hard on him guys; he must be new to this whole "internet" thing.
- kmckanna, on 03/18/2008, -2/+105Is it just me or does Apple just get the most / best indirect publicity of any company of their type?
- JesusHatesYou, on 03/18/2008, -14/+15And it's always a positive spin. Apple forces iPhone users to use crappy AT&T and the Apple fanboys eat it up. The Mac Air doesn't work with other carriers either. It's Apple's way or the highway. But if this were Microsoft, then Gates is evil. I just don't understand how the fanboys are so hypocritical.
- Magee1205, on 03/18/2008, -4/+6Amen, brother.
- norcalscan, on 03/18/2008, -0/+15Wait, the Mac Air doesn't work with any other carriers? Did I miss something here?
- weizilla, on 03/19/2008, -1/+10you can't carry a mac air unless it's in a manila envelope
- xaxxon, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1No. The air doesn't work with ANY carriers. The OP was just on crack.
- joeanon, on 03/18/2008, -10/+4It's because of Apple's cult like following that has kept it alive this long. They are dedicated, like those people keeping Mac magazines in print all those years. They also actively flood user driven sites with pro Apple propaganda, it's just their way.
I find it misleading, Apple is one of the biggest monopolizers in history. They only difference is they got burnt and almost went out of business for trying to keep a closed business model and total control. I mean, get real, Mac is cool, but secret beta programs and such are just gimmicks.
There is nothing special about the Mac interface that could ever make it salable like having 10 times more software to chose from. An OS itself is hardly useful, it's the programs it runs that makes or breaks it. So far, that's been Apple's greatest hurdle and WITHOUT A DOUBT they brought it entirely on themselves by embracing this secretive closed model of development.
MS is sneaky and underhanded, but they would never close their business model. They know they have to sell and keep their platform of innovation that has driven the PC hardware all these years. The openness is what made is so great. However, having money to direct the platform also helps I think and that's why I don't see Linux taking any considerable amount of MS's pie. It's just worth it to pay for something as important as your OS since it determines what programs you can run.
Most of the best developers make their apps primarily for WIN32 and EVEN if it's ported or cross platform chances are it won't be optimized as well. Many WIN32 apps are the Linux apps of choice running through wine. I expect more from the OS of programmers. At least quality native apps that make me want to use Linux instead of making me want to run Windows inside Linux.
I think if Mac ever got on top, they'd be the worst of the worst for extending their control and vision over the industry. MS might try to buy out competition, Apple would rather lock it out.
- JesusHatesYou, on 03/18/2008, -14/+15And it's always a positive spin. Apple forces iPhone users to use crappy AT&T and the Apple fanboys eat it up. - dn11, on 03/18/2008, -5/+4Hey, even famous media personalities need a laptop that can live up to their ego and bank account - that laptop is the Macbook Air. But I'm digging this for general good humor anyhow
- bmorlok, on 03/18/2008, -4/+183Hmm, Apple should make the MacBook Air aerodynamicly sound so that when this happens, it gently glides to the street.
- freshyill, on 03/18/2008, -0/+32Generally speaking, wouldn't making something more aerodynamic would make it hit the ground faster?

- logicbus, on 03/18/2008, -1/+10I dugg it for Charlie Rose being a hardcore tech enthusiast. I had no idea. The pic towards the bottom after the link -- a Blackberry AND an iPhone? That's enthusiasm. You have to be even more impressed when you still hear about celebrities/rich people who have still never used email ...

- TheKingInYellow, on 03/18/2008, -14/+3if you are dumb enough to waste your money on a macbook air then you deserve to have a beat up face. i love macs and osx but the AIR is a typical marketing gimmick from apple. like everything they sell, for a few dollars extra you can get a whole helluva lot more...but this is america...so go ahead and empty your pockets on something cute and tiny that has barely any hardware.
whatever. this is why i hate seeing people with those tiny f*cking ipods and hearing them complain about how they wish they had more hard drive space. well what did you expect? you bought a shuffle for $99 because that's all you could afford instead of saving up another $200 for a real ipod that has a billion more bells and whistles. you get what you pay for and apple preys on the ignorant consumer.- freshyill, on 03/18/2008, -0/+4Sounds like somebody wish he had $1799 so he could buy one too.
- TheKingInYellow, on 03/18/2008, -4/+1no, what i'm saying is that apple continues to making cute expensive things that are worthless because it knows that people will buy them because they're stupid. the hefty $1799 price tag is fine BUT for an extra $200 you can upgrade to a mac book pro, have a 2 inch larger screen, an extra ghz processor, 120 more gbs of hard drive, 2gb of ram and an internal optical drive.
this is what apple does. they make really expensive crap because they know people will buy them because they're new and cool. why buy an ipod shuffle for $49 when you can spend an extra $200 and gain an extra 79gb of storage and a screen? why buy a mac book air when you can spend an extra $200 and get a mac book pro? i'm just amazed that people are continuing to shovel their hard earned cash into bare bones crap from apple.
my point is 'you get what you pay for'.- 11oops, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2I paid for a light, easy to carry laptop with decent battery life to carry in my backpack all day. This is along with about fifteen pounds of books, folders, notes, and more. I get through a full day of note taking, usually without needing a recharge, and when it's in my bag it's virtually non-existent.
Do I need 120gb of storage for my notes? No. Do I need 2gb of RAM? Nope -- 1 is plenty for my needs. Do I need an optical driver? Sure don't -- haven't used mine on my desktop laptop in over a year. Do I need a more powerful processor? Nope.
And I have a pro on my desktop -- I would never risk everything by carrying my only computer to be stolen, damaged, etc. I guess I'm an idiot for only buying what I need. - freshyill, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1Well my point is that you don't know what the hell you're talking about. People don't buy the MacBook Air because you get a lot of power for the price. People are paying for a very light, thin Apple laptop. To THOSE PEOPLE, that IS worth $1799. I really can't believe you're not getting this.
The same logic applies to iPods, going all the way back to the iPod mini. Not everybody wants massive storage. Some people just want something small and easy to use that they can easily fit into a pocket or purse. They don't need 160 GB of music with them at all time. Four, eight or 16 is plenty for them.
This is pretty basic stuff here. Biggest, most storage, or most powerful does not necessarily equal best for a lot of people. Why don't you understand this?

- BaronVonZ, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2I'm sorry man, but you suck at making any kind of point.
For one thing, the air lies in a different part of the market then a macbook pro, the price gets you different features.
Secondly, I'd rather a shuffle to a 160gb. classic. Many others would as well, hence the need for two separate and different products.
Third, when a shuffle is $50 and the standard ipod is $200+ dollars more, thats not "a couple more bucks", thats 5x the price.
Finally, ending your argument with "my point is 'you get what you pay for'" completely invalidates the entire point your trying to make.
Please try a little harder, would you?
- freshyill, on 03/18/2008, -0/+4Sounds like somebody wish he had $1799 so he could buy one too.
