I agree with the school administrators. She is just being difficult... They should lock her up.

You're an idiot for posting this comment. The charges have already been dropped, and it sounds like the parents were at least partially responsible for having the police notified.
I don't think unleashing the school's contact details to a bunch of adolescent digg users is going to do anyone any good. Stop using digg as a lynch mob staging ground. - rarkai, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31If they would have just removed her uterus and breasts, this never would have happened.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23This is what originally happened:
(AP) DANVILLE, Pa. — A 12-year-old special education student was charged with disorderly conduct after authorities said she deliberately wet her pants at school.
The girl’s mother said she urinated only because the principal frightened her.
The mother said in Thursday’s Press Enterprise that the incident occurred last month, after the girl, classmates and teachers ate a holiday lunch at Danville Middle School.
The girl was told to go to the kitchen to wash some pots and pans, but refused, wet her pants after teachers summoned Principal Kevin Duckworth, the mother said.
The newspaper withheld the names of the girl and her mother.
Police Chief Eric Gill said school officials were at “wit’s end’’ with the girl, and they believe her actions were deliberate.
Duckworth did not return calls for comment. School Superintendent Steve Keifer said only that police are generally called in only after “all other alternatives are exhausted.’’
Police told the girl’s parents they could probably avoid a fine if they agree to have the girl do community service. - jcounterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Life skills are actually a big part of special education classes. It might seem like slave labor, but teaching how to cook and clean and sew and just do the tasks we all have to do can be a good thing. It sounds like this was a special meal and event, which often is followed up by special chores and teaching responsibility.
This kid of life skills training is the only thing that has helped my sister, who is severely mentally handicapped...She will never learn to read a write, but she has learned via life skills training that she can handle some responsibilities and tasks associated with life. - dashroc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20How ridiculous!
"Car 54, we have a pants wetting at Danville Middle School. Proceed with caution. Over."
If peeing in your pants was a crime, I would have been doing a life sentance since the age of 2. - Sippi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Please remember that Principle Ducksworth may not be the only one responsible for pressing charges. In many cases like this it's the School Superintendent, which is Steve Keifer. Please make sure we spread the blame on all the people who are responsible.
The mother of this poor child has enough things to worry about with a disabled child. Last thing she needs is to deal with legal problems the local school caused. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"... Digg is becoming the worlds most powerful vigilante group."
-------
And you think this is a good thing?!
Knowing how so many people fly off the handle over Digg postings (often without ever actually reading the articles), that Digg is turning into a mob-justice organization tool frightens me a bit. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"Charge Dropped After Mentally Challenged Girl Wets Pants At School"
Good thing that girl wet her pants, or else she could have gotten a fine, or worse, suspended.
:-P - mcaaronice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Someone needs to mention that it's "Principal", not "principle". No one heard the saying about a "Princi-PAL"? I think I learned it from Mr. Belding.
- PatrickFisher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Wow, I did NOT know that you could be charged for ***** like this. When I was in high school (ok, it was only a couple years ago) , I paid a 17-year-old guy $2.36 to wet his pants in class. I know it sounds immature, but it was funny at the time. I probably wouldn't have done it if I'd known he could get charged for it. Ah, nevermind, I probably still would have.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Man and these are special education teachers?
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14You're a complete *****.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@all4not:
The police do not have the authority to "throw cases out."
The DA can decide not to press charges, or a judge can throw a case out. Learn how our legal system works, before you post more stupid comments. - kRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9YAY! I peed in the pool. YAY!
- All4not, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10More important who is the dumb police chief that didn't throw this case out and why are they making her do the dishes in school? And it's a 12 year old girl, let alone one special needs one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I like some of the '14 tenets' the principal lists...
"Multifaceted guidance and support services"
"An inviting, supportive, and safe environment"
"Courageous and collaborative leadership"
"School initiated family and community partnerships"
My faith that there are still some people out there that say what they mean and mean what they say takes another hit. - Sdsmith1975, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I work for an agency that assists individuals with Developmental Delay and Mental Retardation. It doesn't matter if she did it intentionally or not, this was overkill as a disciplinary action. Not only Dugg!!, but forwarded to all my contacts within the Tennessee State Department of Mental Retardation Services!
- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8when peeing is a crime, only criminals will pee...
- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Duckworth said the decision to call police was made in consultation with the girl's parents, in hopes it would improve her behavior. He said it appears the mother later regretted the decision.
- CimCookoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I went to this middle school about 10 years ago. FYI: the town has about 3000 residents and our only previous claim to fame was we were featured on an episode of MTV True Life "I'm on exctasy" There a girl from our town got so messed up from the drug that she was missing parts of her brain. I can't really tell if this is a step up or down. Nice to see the alma mater in the news though!!!!
- PaulyNewsome, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11The real question here is why would an educational facility have a student washing dishes for them??? Especially this kind of student..
- Mr.Glass, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/01/05/america/NA_GEN_US_Girl_Charged_Pants_Wetting.php
"School officials dispute those claims, saying the girl has assaulted staff and uses urination as a "weapon.""
You know, i cans see a boy pulling that one of, but ..... - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You are making the assumption that he was kidding. We could see a new age of beating down the special ed kids. I personally feel they should not be mainstreamed by default. Some will benefit, yet many just will not benefit, so save the funds for other educational requirements. Some parents seem to want their kids to become normal and see mainstreaming as a cure. It is not. In this case, people were expecting a certain outcome and when the child failed to perform they called the police instead of finding new ways to help the child.
Forget innovative education techniques, let's just bring out the strap and beat the "retards". Something went very wrong in this school. I hope they can fix it. - sicc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm sure she will get lots of spam regardless of what happens, it's a given...
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm surprised the police didn't feel it was necessary to handcuff and pepperspray the poor kid. She's got some nerve, purposely pissing her pants like that. She just wants attention because all the cool kids pee their pants.
- fugitiveALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This article is retarded!! Nowhere does it say this girl is "mentally challenged" it says special ed. I guess that means dyslexia, tourettes, or ADD/ADHD makes you retarded???
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Special Education != mentally challenged.
The snapshot article posted does not mention mentally challenged anywhere. The poster ASSUMED she, and anyone in Special Education, is retarded. This is far from true. Most students are in Special Ed due to problems with learning. They may have trouble doing math or completing assignments. They may not have the same reading skills as most other students. The poster made an ignorant assumption of the subjects mental condition and ended up posting probable inaccurate information. Proves what happens when you assume... ASS | U | ME.
I read the more verbose article submitted, and it appears she did it to avoid doing what she was told to do. Who called the police, why they were called and whether or not charges were involved is really irrelevant. Pissing your pants to avoid an assignment, whether it is math or pots & pans is behavior that should be stopped.
-digg inaccurate title and description. - c0dem0nkey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@insomniac84
Wow. What a complete ass you are. The truly disappointing part is that I used to be just like you. Here's hoping you never have to deal with the eye-opening reality of having a child with special needs wherein you are taught the very awful lesson of how important participation in the educational system is...where you are forced to realize that *without* the educational and socialization opportunities the child receives at school, even *more* money has to be spent by the local, state and federal governments in order to care for the child as he or she matures.
Investing in these kids now, when they are young and their brains are still malleable to a point, is the absolute *best* and *cheapest* choice for society - unless you are so cold as to believe euthanasia is the answer. A special needs child that can be taught even "fundamental" things - like self-care, broom-pushing, etc. - is going to require less services later in life and will be able to (possibly) contribute to their own care. Without these educational opportunities, society must carry a much larger portion of the burden.
There's a lot more that could be said about cutting waste from the public education system, but attempting to educate special needs children is not one of those areas. It is clearly a case of spend the money now, to save the money later. - homersaysdoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder if I could get out of a ticket by doing that.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2RTFA
- tungsai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pfft, grammar police, we're fighting an uphill battle.
if only there were a way to track misspellings and do a top 10 list. - FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2edit: NM, mcaaronice got it just before me
seriously... learn to spell - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sound like a family guy vignette. I could totally see Peter trying that.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@merreborn
Who the hell cares?! She misbehaved, was punished, rebelled, pissed herself, and then cried when the piss hit the fan. 12 or not, you are accountable for your actions.
p.s.- please don't ever have children if you plan to raise them with your current philosophy. - Maniaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And you should be ashamed of yourself for not having the wit to build a real criticism of the principal's actions, but instead trying to swing at him with the weight of "1,000,000" digg users.
Grow up. - hotbacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Go Ironmen!
Cim, Danville has at least 5000 people, not 3000. When did you graduate?
Only claim to fame was the exctasy true life? Have you never heard of the mutha f'in Iron Heritage Festival? What about Pappas FAMOUS Hot Dogs or BJ's FAMOUS ribs? Jesus, show some Ironmen pride.
Go Ironmen! - twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The only person saying she was "mentally challenged" was the ass-monkey who wrote the title and description when they posted this. Nowhere in the article does it mention that she is "mentally challenged." The majority of Special Education participants in public schools have learning difficulties, not mental disorders.
- mutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmmm. if i can recall some psychology classes peeing your pants could be signs of sexual abuse. It's a protection to make yourself 'dirty' in order to prevent abuse.
Not sure in this case ofc... - jpezzznuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@LLXerxes and dude3609
Again, you are saying that the previous articles said the girl was mentally handicap. None of the articles, the 10 sentence version or the full text found in the first digg post, state anything about her mental ability. "The news *didn't* state it" -- only the title of this digg did. Open your eyes when you read sensationalized news articles or in this case, digg titles. - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This story is such bull. The parents wanted the police called. Obviously they realize that their daughter was not behaving in a manner they knew her to be capable of. She was being a jerk, plain and simple. She should've been suspended at the very least. My friend John has Down's Syndrome and is around 31 years of age. He acts irresponsibly sometimes, but his sister in law (a life skills/special education teacher) who is his caretaker most of the time, doesn't let him get away with rudeness or what have you. He KNOWS when he's misbehaved. It takes a discerning person to realize what is a simple mistake and what is rebellious behavior, but giving a "mentally challenged" person carte blanche simply because they are, does more harm than good in the long run and is severely irresponsible teaching and or parenting.
- icetigaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would have to say that the Geisinger Hospital is about the only thing making Danville more than a speed bump.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i disagree here.
Here is my comment from above
"The fact that he had a mentally challenged girl wash pots and pans in the first place isn't good because that teaches nothing. I know some of you will be like, "it teaches life skills!", but i dont expect to go to my highschool and clean the boys bathroom because of a life skills program. My sister, who is 15, has autism herself. She is barely able to talk and only has a small vocabulary.. I volunteered in her classes throughout her life, and she has switched schools about 6 times. I have never seen anything come close to as stupid as child labor just to 'teach life skills'. They should be learning their abc's, or learning behavioral skills so they dont do things like scream out in public or become physically abusive, but not how to wash pots and pans." - icetigaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is absolutely insane, I saw this article earlier but just passed over it not realizing where it was until someone told me that our hometown was on the frontpage of Digg. I am currently sitting in Danville on break from college (my hometown, graduated from Danville high school last year) and am absolutely amazed that this town of ~5000 people in the middle of nowhere somehow made it onto digg.
I will try to find out the details of what exactly happened with this incident, but I must say that I am neutral about the new middle school principal Mr. Duckworth, who was just hired for this school year. I met him over the summer when I worked for the school district and he seemed ok. Overall though I could easily see why this situation would get out of hand and obviously they went about this the completely wrong way. I must say that I do not like some administration members, especially Superintendant Steve Keifer, but I don't really know how much he was involved in this. - Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@rarkai
I don't even know what you're referring to but I laughed (a lot) anyway. Cause I'm a sick ***** I guess.
@hifiDesign
I still don't know what he's referring to and I've searched CNN and other news sites. Could someone just tell me?
Edit: Nevermind I found it. Now I'm laughing all over again. - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You needs to learn basic grammar. ;)
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So I guess the digg mob motto is "Agree with us or we will DDoS you?"
- jpezzznuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats exactly how I felt when I saw this story the first time. We had kids with attitude problems, attention issues, and other distracting social issues in special education programs at my elementary school. Nothing mentally handicapped about the kids at all, just a need to provide more individualized attention. This could be why the article says the principle was turning to police as a last resort, she could have been a complete trouble maker removed for acting out.
The story (and the media) would have loved to jump all over a story of a TRUE mentally handicapped child being in this position and I'm sure would have highlighted it much more if it was the case, but instead they cleverly just used the non-descriptive "special education" to suck people in the same way the title of this digg article did.
Bury it as misleading. - hifiDesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@arkitan: brush up on your current events via CNN and you'll undertand...
@rarkai: as mentioned above, you may want to use a [sarcasm] tag at the end of your comment so as not to look callous to the unsuspecting. -
