SCHENECTADY — For the second time in less than a year, a city Parks Department pickup truck sank in Central Park's Iroqouis Pond.
The truck fell through the ice at about 6:30 this morning. A similar incident happened in late January 2008, Deputy Fire Chief Rod Rosate said.
Rosate said the truck was clearing snow off the park's pond when it went through the ice. Pockets of air in the ice can make it deceptively weak.
"It has a lot of air in it," Rosate said of the ice. "Even though its thick, it's relatively weak."
Rosate said crews had tried using a smaller machine to clear ice but "It just wasn't getting the job done." - bashnu, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4rtfm - Do not drive on water.
- AmyVernon, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4OK, this is my question: Why do they HAVE to clear the snow off the ice?
- Rkstar, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3The server seems to be down. There's a link to the same story here with video of them pulling it out - http://dailygazette.com/news/2009/jan/14/0114_truc ...
- nailPuppy, on 01/15/2009, -1/+4A year is still 365 days, isn't it? Maybe 366.
"A similar incident happened in late January 2008"
I'd call that twice in a year. - CaviMike, on 01/15/2009, -3/+6Buried for not being NYC.
- cJw314, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2I hear a few people are looking for work.
- sleeknerve, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2"within a year"
thats what i would use - Ianingf, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2A few reasons. The snow insulates the ice and causes it to melt. Or if you get a thin layer of ice over top the snow its useless for anything. Or the snow might just freeze to the ice and you get rough ice.
I work in the camping industry and in winter the ice is a major concern. We do everything on there skating, tobogganing, broomball.
This year the Ice was just starting to get good when we let snow sit on it. The ice below was not getting strong enough and it was all frozen snow on top. But we got a good inch of pure ice over everything and some bitter cold nights which have been great for our pond. - hmphargh, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2Use a shovel and do it by hand? Yes, it takes more time, yes, it is more labor intensive, yes, it prevents trucks from falling through the ice.
- inactive, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1Drive a truck on top of a frozen pond... i donno... I'd hire some bums to shovel or something.
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1@nail,
i think you should ask a 30gb zune - iJessicaRabbit, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1mirror?

But you know, comment away! - emjaymj, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Hey guys, check your hocus-pocus science and logic at the door. I don't want to hear it.
- hanger69er, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1and don't be surprised
if a crack in the ice
appears under your feet - Rkstar, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Supposedly the guy got out before it sank. I believe he just walked to shore without even getting wet.
- krahzee, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1"Uh... what? Insulating the ice keeps it FROZEN"
No it doesn't. Remember the lake is liquid under the ice. That liquid is not cold enough to freeze and therefore could thaw it in the right conditions. By keeping wind off of the ice surface as well as providing a buffer betwen the ice and the below freezing tempratures outside, it can keep it a bit warmer. Kind of the same theory as igloos. - DiggzDE, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1hey, he added a legitimate question at the end of the comment.
- LoudMusic, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Have these people not heard of a hand held shovel?
- ravedigger, on 01/18/2009, -0/+1I definitely did this to my Volvo in NH.
- yacks, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1if it happened in January 2008.. it would be 366 days and 1 second.. last year was a special leap year..
- ChrisLondon, on 01/15/2009, -1/+2I glanced at the URL quickly and thought it said theonion.com.
- emjaymj, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1"A few reasons. The snow insulates the ice and causes it to melt."
Uh... what? Insulating the ice keeps it FROZEN. - sinembarg0, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Insulating it from the cold air that froze it while not doing anything about the slightly warmer non frozen water below it. Yup, insulating it will help keep it frozen.
/s - CaviMike, on 01/15/2009, -1/+1If it happened in Dec '08, yes, but it wasn't even the same season let alone the same year so, no.
- Twenty, on 01/15/2009, -1/+1Well damn, it's ***** cold and windy up here, with 6" of snow. ***** skating, or going to class for that matter.
- centran, on 01/15/2009, -1/+1Why did this happen? Are they too lazy to take a depth sample to make sure the ice can hold the weight?
Are they worried about making a little hole in the ice for skaters to trip on? Well then I am pretty sure they can get a depth reading with ground penetrating radar. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -1/+1A combination of prescription eyeglasses and Hooked On Phonics might be able to help you.
- volatileant, on 01/15/2009, -2/+2Perhaps next time you will read the entire article:
"Rosate said crews had tried using a smaller machine to clear ice but "It just wasn't getting the job done."
But you know, comment away! - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -1/+1I guess they figured it couldn't possibly happen twice.
Darwin Award candidate? - biggestprick, on 01/15/2009, -3/+3Only people without a brain would try to clear snow off of a pond so some idiots can skate!
- biggestprick, on 01/15/2009, -1/+1You know it!
- AlphaDrake, on 01/15/2009, -2/+2Couldn't they use something smaller...?
Did the guy get out? - DS011, on 01/17/2009, -0/+0If there's something strange in your neighborhood
