- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -5/+124the Darwin awards are for people who remove themselves from the gene pool.
and since this guy didn't have kids and now has no penis I'd say he qualifies. - custerfluck, on 10/12/2007, -9/+108@foobar5892
it started like this: (_))====D
and ended like this: (_))
because he was trying to avoid this: (_))=(jjj)=D - funkysandman, on 10/12/2007, -15/+95should this get filed under Darwin awards?
- decades, on 10/12/2007, -1/+74Still, he was a little hard on himself...
- demonsofgoetia, on 10/12/2007, -20/+88Many Atheists are also Buddhists, btw.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+69It nice to hear buddhists also have a healthy attitude towards sex. I almost thought the christians and muslims had that market cornered.
- crazyjeff0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59Most Buddhists view sex as a way to show love, but we should not be lustful or be attached to love. There are some extreme orders of monks, but this is not a typical case and many Buddhist Lamas would disagree with what that monk did.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58"declined to have it reattached"
"but refused reattachment"
"but he declined to have it reattached"
Said the same thing 3 times in 4 very short paragraphs. Very interesting article, but the writer should go back to writing school. - neithernet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51Not any more
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40The penis ...will be sold on e-bay.
But seriously, he knew nothing of true meditation, if he was still willing to be so violent!
His act was one entirely of EGO, and probably cancels out the benefits of many lifetimes of meditation practice!
Apparently, he is at war with nature -- which is a position of total internal contradiction.
How can someone commit such an act of deliberate violence and mutilation on a human being...and still claim to be a 'Buddhist?'
His stupid act approaches the stupidity of the christian priests and nuns, who oppose nature by trying to completely deny their sexuality. Eventualy, it has to explode into something! - Easty, on 10/12/2007, -12/+50Now that's dedication.
More fundamentalist Christians should do that.
There'd be fewer of them. - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38He clearly works for The Department of Redundancy Department.

Well, I can dream, can't I? - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -15/+44Many of you appear to have very little understanding of Buddhism
In pure (i.e. what the Buddha taught) Buddhism which I practice;
There is no God
There is nothing to believe
There is nothing to have faith in
Buddhism IS a science. A science of one's own experience. And that, my friends, is it. Anything else is extra.
It's only a religion in that you 'practice (being with experience) religiously (i.e. every day without fail). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36This thread is useless wihtout pics.

Sounds more like Nihilism to me - randomboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33I think he removed himself from the gene pool long before he cut his penis. Problem is, to completely renounce all earthly cares you would have to remove a part of your brain. It's called a lobotomy :)
- FoxFaction, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29lol what was the rationale for putting an apostrophe in "Gets", just out of curiosity
- techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Only Buddhist monastics are expected to give up sex -- and that may not be universally practiced. There is no dogma related to sex for Buddhist laypersons, such as myself, except one of the 10 precepts (which are only recommendations, not true dogma) which says you should abstain from "sexual misconduct" which is open to interpretation (I think most see it as "don't cheat on your significant other").
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Buddha never taught any such thing. Just because one mad monk does this, doesn't mean it's regular practice. Most Buddhists I know would be aghast if they hear of this.
- mugenkeiji, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I would imagine that 'stupidity' or 'the state of the public education system' would adequately answer your question. Wait, let me recant the second: only stupidity can explain it.
- Matadon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Um, no, Buddhism isn't anything even close to a science. There are no theories, no laws, no standards for proof. Buddhism is nothing more than an atheistic religion coupled with a set of philosophical guidelines and best practices.
Is it a good religion? I don't know, I don't really think that an idea can be 'good' or 'bad' -- it's how people implement that idea that matters. Is Buddhism science? Hell no.
I suggest your read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Nothing compared to this guy.

- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17NO, just no!!!
- Kickasso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15sounds like something the creators of south park could think of. Not something that would happen in real life..
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16This guy is obviously not your regular Buddhist. Why do we automatically taint all people of some group with the same brush. This is mental laziness at it's worst.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14He wanted to warn you about the S, those things can really catch you off guard sometimes.
- cynicist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Religion isn't dangerous, fanatics are. You don't see any of the other several billion people practicing a religion doing ***** like this.
- esourcemag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"A Thai Buddhist monk cut off his penis with a machete because he had an erection during meditation and declined to have it reattached, saying he had renounced all earthly cares, a doctor and a newspaper said on Wednesday."
Umm... I'm not too sure about this but, he can still fine himself getting horny anyway without a penis... true? Also, how he can commit such an act is a cop-out to what he believes. If a challenge such as that comes your way, you take it up, not tak it off. It only prove how weak you are by avoiding the situation. - mugenkeiji, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24Substitute 'severs penis' with 'attaches explosive belt and detonates the belt in a crowd'. Are you still as impressed by mindless devotion?
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Bangkok...

- nullity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"I've never heard of a severed penis killing dozens and damaging surrounding buildings."
Come on, how is this getting dug down?
The mental image alone still has me laughing. - rparle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12No, but you see them vote against abortion, stem cell research and gay marriage. You see them elect unqualified and uneducated boobs to public office on the basis of "ethical issues" rather than more important political considerations. You see them oppose sex education and family planning in aids-afflicted regions of Africa and elsewhere. You see them support Islamic theocracy that leads to oppression, especially of women and minorities.
Not all of them, of course. But no-one can claim that religion's unpleasant influence only reaches as far as a few isolated wackos. - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14@TheReport
Budhsim might sound like Nihilism to you.........
But it's not.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budhism - thoth92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This story seems a little out there. I just finished studying Buddhism, and I'm doing a paper on it, and this doesn't seem like a thing a good Buddhist monk would do. One of the most central beliefs of Buddhism is that one should not follow extremes (the Middle Path), and this is an extreme.
