- emecks, on 06/04/2009, -5/+57Royal Navy Captain: "Alright old bean take your boat and go home again, we shall confiscate your cannons you naughty boys!"
Long John Somali Silver: "Arrr, promise not to get me other guns." (in somali) - jwolcott, on 06/05/2009, -8/+47They also told the Pirates not to do it again in a very mean tone of voice.
Yup, that'll stop them... - CanadianCheese, on 06/05/2009, -2/+38Can't view video at work, but unfortunately the Brits had no choice. Jurisdiction issues.
- icexe, on 06/05/2009, -0/+36I believe it has something to do with International Law and jurisdiction.
- ilesal, on 06/05/2009, -0/+32Actually they could not do much else, they took weapons and destroyed their boat, but as they were not in the act of hijacking another boat, piracy they had to let them go.
- Tanktunker, on 06/05/2009, -2/+31I think they gave a reasonable explanation for their (in)action.
- Pxtl, on 06/05/2009, -2/+26Arresting them and taking them to a 1st-world prison would be a reward, not a punishment.
- tegularius, on 06/05/2009, -1/+25A show of strength without anyone getting hurt. Well played Royal Navy.
- adrian67, on 06/04/2009, -1/+19Old bean - LOL
- gpl100, on 06/05/2009, -7/+22From Pirates and Emperors - Noam Chomsky
Saint Augustine (pirate) was brought to Alexander the Great...
Alexander: "How dare you molest the seas with your piracy?"
Pirate: "How dare you molest the world? I have a small ship, so they call me a pirate. You have a great navy, so they call you an emperor. But you’re molesting the whole world. I’m doing almost nothing by your comparison. ARRGHH"
The "ARRGHH" was subject to debate... - Angostura, on 06/05/2009, -0/+15One lot were pirates in the middle of an act of piracy.
The other lot were guys in a boat with guns. Suspicious, but you know - jailing people for looking suspicious is frowned on. - Hedison, on 06/04/2009, -12/+26Don't know about you but is this not ridiculous?
- footbag01, on 06/05/2009, -1/+15They should've taken the boat too!
- stickyman, on 06/05/2009, -2/+16you cant arrest then until they have actually done something, which is why there is such a problem.
they just sail around in international waters with guns on board, which is not illegal, then make quick dashes for ships. - Navicerts, on 06/05/2009, -5/+19Sounds like a reasonable action to me.
It's better than let's say throwing them in a prison with no plans for any sort of trial when they in fact didn't commit any crimes (at least no evidence). Sure, they are dressed like pirates (parrot and all im sure) but that's not any real crime. However, given the fact that it was fairly obvious they were pirates (or at least *trying to be* pirates), destroying their weapons is a good solution.
You see these are really just desperate people (as south park taught us) and if you make pirating not profitable for them they will stop doing it.
My solution would be to beef up the offense and defensive powers of the ships that are getting attacked. Sure it could get ugly for a few months but if it's not done pirating is just going to get worse. The ocean is too big to protect. - Wag3Slav3, on 06/05/2009, -1/+14***** people, does due process mean nothing?
USA thinks everyone from the middle east is a terrorist, kills or imprisons everyone w/o evidence.
USA thinks that everyone in international waters with an armed boat is a pirate, kills and sinks everyone who would like to defend themselves from pirates w/o evidence that they are pirates. - sv650touring, on 06/05/2009, -1/+13you can't arerst them, but you can take their property?
- dicer999, on 06/05/2009, -2/+14"Pirates stop small boat, take guns, run"
FTFY - WELLDOITLIVE, on 06/05/2009, -1/+11No.
- asancho, on 06/05/2009, -0/+9From what ive read its really hard for pirates to get prosecuted, so officials dont even try to. Its too much work. If anyone gets a chance read the article in April's GQ, it really talks about why a lot of these people go into piracy. In short, theyre f-ing poor, and piracy is the only way out.
- Tanktunker, on 06/05/2009, -5/+14Murder would've obviously been the better route.
- jba68, on 06/05/2009, -1/+10comprehend the statement the pirates were not doing anything...
- Po0py, on 06/05/2009, -2/+11Nobody got hurt. No blood spilt. I say thats a job well done. It's also very much the British way of doing things. They've been doing it like this for decades. It's exactly why the British have the reputation that they do as opposed to the reputation the Americans have around the world. Not trying to start a 'Brits are better than Americans' flame war but in certain cases restraint is much better than agression.
Edit: Woops. That was a reply to Hedison's comment. - thundercloud39, on 06/05/2009, -4/+12***** THE RI ... oh, wait.
- ShadyATOMIC, on 06/05/2009, -0/+8Dugg for "moving pictures"
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -0/+6Well, look on the bright side. They pirate because they have no money. Now with no guns, they can't pirate, which means it'll be trickier for them to get the money needed to buy replacement guns.
- Jovian84, on 06/05/2009, -0/+6btw go to reuters' they have a great vid of them blowing the ***** out of the boats
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5Oh yes, I'm real sure the threat of being captured/killed is so much greater than the threat of starvation if they don't pirate. Not defending it, just pointing out that they are very, very desperate people and you're ***** retarded if you think killing them will solve the problem.
- CanadianCheese, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5Basically, in international waters, unless the pirates were doing something illegal, the navy can not do anything, because they have no right to.
Sucks, sure. They could probably commandeer the boat and strand the pirates, but that's probably a little harsh for no trial. - gmw666, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5lead2thehead, not It really isnt... the last hangable offence that everyone seems to think is still around is arson in her majesty's / Royal dockyards. which has actually been repealed. The thing is, yes on this occasion they are all pirates, and everyone can tell, but if you say "lets lock them up!" think of the other possible cases, if you want to take your boat out for a spin in the region, and you had a gun on you, then you will be locked up? for how long? Its things like this that allowed america all its sweeping laws to lock up who they like, for as long as they like. stop being sensationalist.
EDIT: from wiki
After abolition of the death penalty for murder, die-hards began a tradition requiring the Commons to hold a free vote on a motion during each Parliament proposing the restoration of capital punishment. This motion was always defeated. However, the death penalty still survived for other crimes:
1. causing a fire or explosion in a naval dockyard, ship, magazine or warehouse (until 1971);
2. espionage[7] (until 1981);
3. piracy with violence (until 1998),
4. treason (until 1998), and
5. certain purely military offences under the jurisdiction of the armed forces, such as mutiny[8] (until 1998). Prior to its complete abolition in 1998, it was available for six offences: 1) serious misconduct in action, 2) assisting the enemy, 3) obstructing operations, 4) giving false air signals, 5) mutiny or incitement to mutiny, and 6) failure to suppress a mutiny with intent to assist the enemy.
However, no more executions were carried out. - Qumahlin, on 06/05/2009, -1/+6"but not those who murder innocent people to have a better life"
Clearly you don't know jack ***** about what your talking about. Go look up the death toll from Somali pirates. You will quickly find that killing is the absolute LAST thing they want to do.
They understand that if they kill hostages all it will do is provoke a massive backlash and that they, and a lot of innocents, will die. Go read up on the one crew that was actually found to have a small list of rules with them on what and what not to do. Killing / Hurting the hostages was listed in the DON'T section
I do agree with the killing of those 3 pirates a cpl months ago because they were out of options and clearly were not thinking straight. If you read the most recent articles they mention that the snipers took them out while they were busy arguing with eachother and getting seasick from being in the wake of the military ships.
"killing them all" in this case does not serve any purpose. If we want the problem resolved we should be assisting them in restoring their government. We should be patrolling their waters and arresting the companies that took advantage of the goverment collapse and then dumped 1000's of tons of toxic waste into their primary fishing area thereby contaminating their primary food supply.
By your logic we should just stop sending food aid to north korea since that way they will all starve to death and we won't need to worry about them. - monkeymad2, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5My dad used to sail on the type of ship they take over most commonly, though not in that region so much.
He says that he'd prefer not to have a gun since the pirates, once aboard, would know about the weapon and kill the crew instead of holding them as hostages...
But if you could prevent the pirates from boarding, that's different. Even then, how would you be sure that they were pirates... - charlietuna, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4Lord Nelson must be turning in his grave.

- jer21, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4My god man!!!...Do they want tea?
- Okinsley, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3well its not like they were doing anything illigal. remember, 10 SUSPECTED pirates were caught. Innocent untill proven guilty.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3and I'd love you to be stuck living in somalia.
These people aren't thugs, if the were they would be killing and torturing hostages, something they have not been doing. - k3rfuffl3, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3/s for the idiots digging you down
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -2/+5The answer is Yes, Tanktunker .
- mickstephenson, on 06/05/2009, -1/+4@moduc - If I wasn't already sure of your ignorance your last statement really clinched it
"Oh, and the China tank crushing incident"
Tank Man was never crushed, he was arrested and never heard from again.
