- oriondr, on 10/10/2007, -5/+150Jesus, Ive been on that bridge so many times.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+128Holy ***** *****. I just drove over this bridge back home from work not ten minutes before it collapsed. They've been doing some rigorous construction work on it for the last month or so, and traffic has been congested every night since then. Oh my god...
They've been sending loads of riverboats to the scene. I hope they get everyone out real quick, its supposed to start raining pretty hard soon. - flaron, on 10/10/2007, -14/+127This is one of the busiest highways in Minnesota. I'm sure tragic was bumber-to-bumber. The scary thing is I crossed this bridge TODAY about 3 hours ago.

Picture of the bridge. - cusoman, on 10/10/2007, -6/+111Have some damn respect man.
- LarryLacuna, on 10/10/2007, -8/+95Seriously Rushco, ***** you. I thought I lost family until a few minutes ago. They aren't reporting any fatalities yet, but that could change, and several people are severely injured. Have some respect.
- didoubleg, on 10/10/2007, -5/+88Man am I glad I decided not to go downtown to pick out my fiancé's wedding ring today
- dirtyhand, on 10/10/2007, -5/+78*****... that explains all the sirens.
- Maxpower2912, on 12/03/2008, -6/+72There was a school bus on the bridge at the time too. This is easily the worst thing that has happened to the twin cities that I can remember. Aside from that, the traffic is going to be unbearable between MPLS and St. Paul. This is terrible.
- shoebobs, on 10/10/2007, -5/+64Those of you trying to make jokes about this are ridiculous. I live 2 blocks away from the bridge and have many friends in the area. Have some decency
- XivGNP, on 10/10/2007, -1/+56I drove over this bridge 10 minutes before it collapsed. I got home and turned on the TV after getting 10 calls before my cell stopped working, and I ***** you not I almost collapsed on the ground. I can't believe this is happening, let alone I barely missed being on the bridge when it happened without a second thought.
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -16/+68IMPORTANT
IF YOU LIVE IN MN STOP USING YOUR CELL PHONE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECCECARY. Emergency workers need all the channels possible.
sorry for the caps lock but had to do it - merwin, on 10/10/2007, -15/+66Yes, the tragic was bumber to bumber. The sadness was also plunging into the riber.
- PhreakMac, on 10/10/2007, -6/+54FOX 9 just reported that homeland security is on the scene - THIS WAS NOT A TERRORIST ATTACK
I drove over that bridge yesterday and they have it so torn apart they should of had it closed. - Stratacaster, on 10/10/2007, -3/+50Hey Minnesotans, go donate blood tomorrow to help our neighbors. (Everyone really should, even outside MN.)
- Petrarch1603, on 10/10/2007, -7/+51that is not a good idea, you'll just get in the way of EMTs and other professionals
- Phrase, on 10/10/2007, -8/+47This is almost unbelievable. I use that bridge at least once each week, and it's the main way to get anywhere if you're going from the south MN into the Twin Cities.
My mother is working in the ER right now, and she called to say she's going to be late because her hospital is getting a ton of victims for this. I'm just going to sit here and pray. - cusoman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+34I just drove that last night to get home from dinner with friends. Make no mistake, there will be no terrorist involved with this, this is all the MNDOT, which has always been a point of contention in this state because of how horribly they handle construction projects around here. This will bring about some major reform in the area, I hope.
- one1plus1one, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33I just clicked Rushco's profile and he lives in Minnesota where this happened.
Maybe he wasn't being sarcastic, but perhaps he was serious with his comment, and just typing quickly due to the emotion of the situation. (I hope you were indeed serious Rushco, and not making light of other people's suffering.) - DrIce926, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35Comment abuse, here (I am not replying) but I just want to tell my story and make sure it gets heard. You can digg me down if you wish.
I was debating riding the bus today at 5:30pm. I go over this bridge all the time. Because tonight I decided to work overtime until 6:00pm or so, I missed this by half an hour.
This could have been me.
Needless to say, things have really been put into perspective for me tonight. I thank Digg members for allowing real news to hit the front page. - StickWST, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33Im in Brooklyn Park,MN. Our PD is on its away, sirens everywhere.
- wiregen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31I was on washington and 35w when this bridge collapsed I just looked to my right - and I just froze.
- epalla, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30There was construction on the bridge at the time. It was bumper-to-bumper on an 8 lane bridge down to 4 lanes. I alternately take this bridge and another route to 35W home. I tell you what - there was no traffic where I got on today (after the bridge). It was insane to see CONVOYS of cops with boats and SUVs and all sorts of emergency equipment headed the opposite direction.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+31I just heard on the local news that they got all the kids off the schoolbus safe. Thank god. I hope all the workers made it out safe, too.
I can't believe I've been complaining so much about the traffic that the construction has been causing lately... I'd gladly take that back over this. - colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -7/+34Wouldn't a collapsing bridge normally make a loud sound like an explosion?
- AznAstronaut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27OK, our BIGGEST problem right now is people flocking to the scene to watch. PLEASE DO NOT HEAD TO THE SITE. Emergency vehicles are having difficulty accessing the area and police are stretched very thin, making them unable to respond quickly enough to move people.
- DoodleMaster, on 10/10/2007, -10/+37I'm from Mn guys and I cross this bridge regularly and i can tell you what i think happened and I pretty sure this is why. This bridge has been in constant repair for years, literally the constructions crews would cut large 9 feet segments of concrete out of the bridge and steel regularly on this bridge the bridge obviously collapsed because of all the mending welding and work and degradation of the structure. I'm watching it on my t.v right now there was a school bus on that bridge the bus was 6 feet away from falling into a crack where the bridge split. This is bad very bad over 140k people use this bridge a day. People are being asked not to sue their cellphones because they are interfering with the emergency crews ability to communicate. 20 30 workers were on this bridge as it collapsed. I was built in 1967, and had no pillar underneath for support to prevent water back up (there is a damn down stream f the bridge). This is bad guys really bad the worst part is....it happened during rush hour...and its about to rain. Fires are randomly starting. its about a 40 FEET drop from the river to where the bridge was. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE ASK ME. If your worried that is...People jumped off the bridge on to the side walk there are many many many injuries. There is a 4th section of a bring that is barely hanging on with over 20 tons of cars and debris on it it could collapse sooner or later coausing more problems. Every fire
fighter in the TC si there. - XivGNP, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29Oh I'm sorry, I kinda figured that was the standard reaction to seeing somewhere you physically were earlier now a complete wreck, realizing you're sitting at home in front of your PC right now only by sheer fate. You're right, I should just calm down.
- AznAstronaut, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26I work security on campus at the University of Minnesota. I'll give updates here as I get them. Currently the police department is requisitioning Facilities Management trucks to transport injured away from the site.
- B2Ben, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27Here's a bit better view of the bridge before collapsing (it's the one in front, with the metal supports):

- phmfthacim, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26I'm so sad right now, I can't find my friends
- cbartlett, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Reminds me of the wonderful movie Run Lola Run that explores the idea of how tiny little decisions can affect so much.
- punch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Before and after pics of the bridge...

I work a half mile from this bridge at the UMN campus. Scary stuff. - Seaborgium106, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24I work at an ER in Minneapolis. I just got called in. Apparently, they're getting dead bodies already (EMTs can't pronounce people dead at the scene). Its going to be a long night....
- xister, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23That's right- he's entitled to his free speech just like we're all entitled to freely say ***** him and ***** you too.
- KevinWhite, on 10/10/2007, -14/+34Why are people digging you up? Tragic? Bumber? I can't even read this nonsense!
- guyincognito1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21The work they've been doing recently at least was all to the deck, nothing structural - that shouldn't have caused this. The pillars and steel on this thing are massive, there's really no reason why jackhammering the top few inches of concrete and tearing up some rebar should have led to a collapse of this magnitude. A rep from MNDOT on kare11 about 30 minutes ago was adamant that they have no clue as to why this happened, but I'm sure we'll learn more over the next few days.
Hopefully not too many people are dead, but obviously something this massive isn't going to be completely without casualties.
On a purely selfish ***** level, I know my drive (from the north burbs to south mpls) is going to suck for... oh, the next year or two. - JesusPickle, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23im not quite sure why you would think this is funny at all
- Pyrogen, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24Being anonymous means not having to have decency or common sense. Sorry. :(
- argotechnica, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Apparently, Homeland Security has already gone on the record to say that they believe it's *not* connected to terrorism. (Gotta respect 'em for not jumping on the opportunity, I suppose...)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20if you are in this area, please dont use your cell phone now, emergency only.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+17You should see the Mississipi during a storm.
- arbyn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16sorry to hear that, hope your friends are ok.
- Inverno, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16I just got home.. I was going to go into town (on 35w), but I decided against it. I'm really glad I did :/
- Simcom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15FYI: Traffic was not moving at the time.
- jeszus, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20My Brother was about to get on this bridge when it happened.
- milkmage, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19please excuse flaron he's still a little flustered by his almost near death experience about 3 hours ago. tragic bumber to bumber means traffic was bumper to bumper
- gyrfalcon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Diggers are *****... don't try to make sense of it.
