- spriggig, on 02/09/2009, -0/+111The kid better get an A on his project by default.
- harrynotlarry, on 02/09/2009, -0/+110A volcano made with baking soda and vinegar? GET ME THE PRESIDENT!
- pagit, on 02/09/2009, -1/+81WTF ? what part of "do not touch" don't you understand!
- psion01, on 02/09/2009, -0/+56My first guess was that this happened in Boston.
- oboshoe, on 02/09/2009, -0/+48The bomb squad blew it up.
Well when your favorite tool is a hammer - everything looks like a nail - mechnoch, on 02/09/2009, -0/+37SCIENCE
- Harabeck, on 02/09/2009, -1/+37It's the safest way. Disarming them requires that someone risk their lives by interacting with the device directly. It's much better to evacuate the threatened area, then blow it up when you choose, from a safe distance.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -1/+37Well, duh... it had a wire and screws sticking out of it.
- Canadaa, on 02/09/2009, -1/+31a box with wire and screws sticking out of it... i wonder what it was
- bagboyrebel, on 02/09/2009, -0/+27Well, I guess by being from around Portland I can no longer make fun of Boston for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force bomb scare.
- TheBadWolf, on 02/09/2009, -2/+25Thank god there were no bits of string.
- FI5HERMAN, on 02/09/2009, -4/+19Makes you really wonder where we are headed !!!
- TheBadWolf, on 02/09/2009, -3/+17Well, no, it doesn't.
- HamatoKameko, on 02/09/2009, -1/+15Can you IMAGINE trying to explain this to your teacher?
- iancgi, on 02/09/2009, -1/+15Its to traumatize and acclimate children into more extreme behavior by government.
- psion01, on 02/09/2009, -0/+12Whhhhhooooosh!
Sorry you've missed the news about Boston's hilarious over-reactions to things like this. As harrynotlarry mentions below, Brightlites caused the BPD and city mayor to panic. Then, a few weeks later, BPD's bombsquad detonated a suspicious-looking device chained to a streetlight. The device? A traffic counter placed by the city's own Department of Transportation.
I feel bad about you getting dugg down, so I'll toss you a friendly thumbs-up to counter your loss. - Solkre, on 02/09/2009, -0/+12When was the last time a real bomb was a box with wires sticking out of it?
I think the bombs that kill you are the ones that don't look like ***** movie bombs! - tgc1, on 02/09/2009, -0/+12Clearly, the box didn't say "Do not blow up."
- K4Lic0, on 02/09/2009, -2/+12Does it really?
- VonBargenJL, on 02/09/2009, -1/+11it was actually on the science of fearmongering upon a society...
i'd say its working... - 12340987, on 02/09/2009, -1/+101.31.07
never forget - MikeEric, on 02/09/2009, -0/+9Just to be safe, all science projects should be labeled "Not a bomb" from now on.
- stevenr21, on 02/09/2009, -1/+10the bomb squad blew up my homework, i swear!
- Greengoo, on 02/09/2009, -0/+8Shut. Down. EVERYTHINGGGGGGGG.
- apena89, on 02/09/2009, -0/+8You are the President.
- UberNick, on 02/09/2009, -0/+8"why [was it that this] kid left his science project outside of the Jewish Community Center"
Good question. I wish the article talked a little more on what the hell the project was.
"it sounds to me like a perfectly reasonable case of caution"
WTF are you smoking? Maybe you're desensitized to the nail-clipper confiscations at the airport, the no-knock warrants that kill the mayor's puppy, and the bomb squad taking out science-fair project... but you think it's REASONABLE?! - TheBadWolf, on 02/09/2009, -2/+9Just when I thought your comment couldn't get funnier.
- srg13, on 02/09/2009, -1/+7You're only the third person to post that...
- Benno, on 02/09/2009, -0/+6When I was in high school (in Oregon, no less) I had the pleasure of taking a microelectronics course where students had boxes with breadboard'd project inside. Other teachers and students frequently saw "boxes with a wires and screws sticking out" and a whole school year went by without any bomb squad incidents. It's too bad the current trend to be paranoid and scared about everything seems to be permanent.
- GB570, on 02/09/2009, -1/+6BOOM
- MikeEric, on 02/09/2009, -0/+5To add to Harabeck's answer, they usually detonate them in a chamber designed to take the force without having anything nearby destroyed.

- ldkronos, on 02/09/2009, -0/+4So, if a cop gets killed on a traffic stop, should they not take any chances there and just open fire immediately every time they pull someone over?
- b8765g, on 02/09/2009, -0/+4This is typical of a digg user. Let's attach an unrelated post to a popular post in hopes that more people will digg you up.
- harrynotlarry, on 02/09/2009, -1/+5brightlite's havign caused so much trouble before.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yigQGKaf2A - dorianh49, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Well, it's a cup... with dirt in it. I call it... cup of dirt. Just put an "F" on there and let me go home.
- DOCNM, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3You always have to be suspicious of those nasty terrorists and their cunning and deceiving ways
- TheMishap, on 02/09/2009, -2/+5Douche bags!
- ldkronos, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3Hmm, it has only been 2 years and I obviously already forgot. Please remind me.
- Kaweru, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3Fortunately the publicity will help with that I would imagine =)
Now the childhood memory and retelling it is priceless. - Kaweru, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3I cannot help but wonder (genuinely) what the science project was for. The article mentions there were wires and screws sticking out the box....but ultimately ends stating that the box was full of packing peanuts. (Also gotta wonder what it also looks like having a box of packing peanuts detonated...sounds like a fun science experiment on it's own)
If the experiment was to find out exactly how people and/or the authorities would react to the package, I would have to say it was a darned interesting approach XD - carlosos, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3At the University I went to, the school told every student not to leave Senior Project or any other bigger class projects in the cars in plain sight because of the same thing. One year before I started at the University did security (or a cop) saw something that looked like a bomb in a car and also called the bomb squad.
What does the police expect to find in cars of a University where 70% of the student are in some kind of technical or engineering degree? - poopdigger, on 02/09/2009, -3/+6Hey guys, I just thought of an original and really funny joke. Bomb squad blew up my homework!
- SirvenomItsac, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3well he could say the idea of the project was to trick the bomb squad...
- rafe101, on 02/09/2009, -2/+5This coming from Canada? So many jokes are made at your expense. So get your jabs in. I know you must be bitter.
- Greengoo, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Now I'm curious.
- harrynotlarry, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2I mean what I say, even when I'm wrong.
- Unsanity, on 02/09/2009, -1/+3the whole thing was perfectly reasonable if you read the article and see there was a very recent bombing in that town that killed 2 cops...
chill the ***** out conspiracy boy. - Barbrady, on 02/09/2009, -1/+3After the bomb explosion that killed 2 cops and seriously injured a third a month or so ago in Wilsonville (a few miles south) I'm glad to see they're not taking any chances.
