http://xkcd.com/c250.html - ChromaVita, on 10/12/2007, -4/+85I personally blame the snakes...
- masterJDK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+72I would ***** myself if I saw the engine cover fly off.
- DeathJux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+58Where would we be without Snopes?
- drmangrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32Where does a 200 ton airplane park?
Anywhere it wants. - Barman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Well... there's your problem!
- stevenvh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28"I would ***** myself if I saw the engine cover fly off."
Not a problem, really. At least not for the plane. Might be for people on the ground. Always carry an umbrella. - MSPT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26I actually took the last picture at MSP. The tug was bringing the plane to the gate from the hangar. Luckily only a maintenance guy was on board, and the person driving the tug was not seriously injured. The tug being used is a quite expensive supertug (750,000$). It is capable of fairly high speeds while towing a plane. Mix that with some glycol on the ground (the slippery fluid used to deice planes) and heavy breaking while turning and you see the result. I wound up getting a sit down, citation and had to go to a class about violation airport security for taking it afterwards but it was worth it.

F-15 one wing - imamessy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I can post pictures of car and train accidents you can never feel safe traveling.

Statistically, after 18 miles, it's much safer to fly. In 2005, 43,443 Americans died as a result of automobile accidents... Only 20 Americans died from plane crashes in 2005.

http://www.airdisaster.com/photos/ - oracleofmist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I wonder if the cover was ever found. Does house insurance cover instances where parts of a plane fly off in mid-flight and land on your home?
- TDot1980, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You're actually pretty lame.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The last picture is especially funny to me because I used to work ramp ops at an airport and, believe it or not, a fully empty plane is like a teeter totter and if load it the rong way it'll tip over backwards REALLY easily. They use these bars that hang from the tail to prevent it happening when cargo is involved but in that picture I can see thay didn't have one. That tug had no problem tipping it back. Think about it, in flight all the plane is balanced on the wings or you have really horrid flight dynamics.
- dyreschlock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11shens. that list does not have Oceanic flight 815.
- dmarques, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Airplanes are still far safer than cars! :)

source; http://www.redbullairrace.com/ - kurrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i take it you don't drive then either if you're to make a statement like that
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No, because planes rarely just "crash"...
Unless you loose a wing, or another major flight surface, you and glide in for a landing.
I dont have the percentage right now, but i know that the stats are still higher risk for cars...and those were comparing actually "people who drove" to "people who flew" and rating it that way, not just sheer numbers
ie: [people who flew : died in air crash] vs [people who rode in cars : died in car] - Sangatious, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Umm...those actually were believable.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This must be in response to that first picture being on the front page a couple days ago
- Auryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I hope this doesn't put any of you off flying. Statistically speaking, it's still the safest way to travel.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The second image isnt a mishap at all...
Its the Airfield at the Norfolk Naval Base is VA ... my neck of the woods, the runway goes over the road there (well, technically, the road goes 'under' the runway since the runway doesnt change height...but you know)

My first time in Norfolk, under that thing, a C5 (the plane in that pic) was landing, talk about ***** yoruself when you dont know there is a runway there.. - mt066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Yeah so you just take the Naval Sta exit and - OHMYGOD!!!"

- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"In trees, on major highways, running over buses. Hilarious photo gallery, all true!"
We just had a small plane crash into the highway a 1/2 mile from work, about a month ago. It really wasn't hilarious. All the roads within a mile of the crash were stopped solid all day, and some people died. Second time this has happened in the last few years -- although last time it happened on an even bussier highway about a mile further away. There's been talk of closing/relocating the airport. - neeyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Those planes all crashed because they didn't have Wesley Snipes on board.
Always bet on black. - blastus7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The second photo happens all the time. The cargo plane is actually on a taxiway that goes over the road entering Norfolk Naval Air Station. I don't know if that particular plane is actually stuck but that sight is not uncommon.

Enjoy. - vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Snopes says "in the free world." While Russia may be free, it's probably just a reference to the communist rule they were under when the Antonov was designed and produced.
- stupidverizon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow small world haha.
- KuntaKinte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking, if you look out the left side of the plane you'll see the inner workings of your death causing engine, enjoy the peanuts, they'll probably be your last"
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Snopes got it wrong. The C-5 is smaller than the AN-225.
