But this was not done using FC, here is a link to a video of the actual kind of typing that produced it (as if the typing in the video was not enough to show it wasn't FC): http://ballastexistenz.autistics.org/?p=296
A quote from the same place, quoted from a research study: "There are no available convincing data that autism with vs. without overt peaks of ability, with vs. without overt speech, or overall autism vs. Asperger syndrome, differs at a genetic level. Even language abilities cannot be used to distinguish autism from Asperger syndrome, as written language experts are as representative of autism as oral language experts are representative of Asperger's." -Mottron et al. (http://tinyurl.com/y3x9tq)
And a translation of an article on research of autistic intelligence (and the mismeasure thereof) that might be useful: http://ballastexistenz.autistics.org/?p=39 (I believe they now have a paper in press on this topic)
I am not all that different from a speaking autistic person, the only difference is that I find speaking too difficult to control (I can't get the words I want, I just get words that are not necessarily relevant -- used to happen with typing too, but not as much anymore). Lots of autistic people do speak, however, and look just like me -- and I used to be able to speak at least superficially more fluently than I do now. Lots of autistic people neither speak nor type, but look much more standard than I do at first glance. I am, for your reference, typing this alone, on a computer, ten-fingered, at probably around 120 wpm.
And yeah you're talking to the person who made the video. Disclaimer on assumptions (http://ballastexistenz.autistics.org/?page_id=294) and Let's Play Assumption Ping-Pong (http://ballastexistenz.autistics.org/?p=50) are probably also required reading. But I really wrote this, and this is really about my life as it works currently, and this is really what I look like, etc. I know plenty of autistic people whose vocabulary and grammar far outstrip mine even, who look even stranger than I do. (And I personally can't figure out what's so hard to grasp about the fact that I look unusual and still write. I look unusual because this is how my body responds to my environment and I have no way of stopping it much even if I wanted to. That doesn't have much, if anything, to do with whether I can write or not.) - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I would've submitted a direct link to the video, but someone unfortunately submitted it to the Videos section, where it got hopelessly lost amongst "Do Pretty Girls Fart?" and "Will it Blend?". Shame.
- anhaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try, political statement about which kinds of people/communication/etc are considered real and which are not, and you'll be nearer the truth. If you think it's particularly easy or fun to notice that a whole lot of people are watching this, you can read the post I made about self-consciousness around this stuff (http://ballastexistenz.autistics.org/?p=295).
Doesn't seem to have crossed a lot of people's minds that I'm actually a fairly introverted person who overrides those tendencies on a regular basis (with a non-trivial amount of discomfort) because I actually care about what happens to other people in the world. Trust me, I can get my full quota of attention without making videos of myself doing things that I've been humiliated for over the years. But when they're the best way I can think of to make people think about what it does and doesn't mean to do that stuff, then I have fewer alternatives.
But, yeah. When I want attention (which I tend to want in fairly small quantities), I go see my cat or dog or my friend who lives down the hall, rather than make videos that open me up to all kinds of attention I find (whether complimentary or not) somewhat aversive. - yipfip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was doubtful when I started watching this, but decided to see it through. A good decision- while not life-changing, it was definintely insightful, and exposed a few prejudices of my own just in the fact that I was extremely skeptical during the first half, and was sated when the voice came on.
- anhaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm a woman.
- anhaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2waveman: I have a camera that only records 1 minute 27 seconds at a time. The only way I can make any video longer than that is to splice pieces together. The voice is recorded over the top, in response to what's going on in the video. I used Windows Movie Maker which is not all that hard to use, you just click and drag the segments and you can then record audio over the top of them or click and drag audio files in over the top of them.
I have to admit I'm puzzled by why this would be difficult. I said I had other ways of communicating than English, not that I had trouble operating computers. (I have met very young autistic children who can't speak or write sentences yet but can operate computers perfectly well, and I'm a lot older than most of them.) - aldenhg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not to quibble, but BoingBoing said that the autistic person in the video was a man, not a woman. Anyone know the truth?
- waveman216, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2By the way, creepy Scotsman's reply is awesome:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB7pCuCxlA4 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Call me suspicious, but if this was done using 'facilitated communication' which has been proven as useless and ineffective in autistic people, then this video doesn't add much and is potentially outright false. Most autistic persons are mentally disabled and he's using vocabulary and grammar at a college level which just doesn't add up.
- waveman216, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I almost want to say this is BS cause of the very good editing, but I'm not gonna.
But honestly, look at the editing. It's like someone pieced together things that were recorded at different times and dubbed the audio over it. I'm not saying it's fake, just suspicious... - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+1I really don't know how to respond to this, as a diagnosed Aspie myself, (I have Asperger's Syndrome, was diagnosed in 2000).. and I don't do any of the things they exhibit on the video (I have other symptoms, like I rock my body back and forth when I'm trying to relax or think.. etc..)
They're replying to people on youtube just fine, and things just seem a bit suspicious... like a plea/cry for attention, and from what I can tell, it's working. - SlappyMc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4ALIEENNN!!!!
