    It happens when the user types the first few letters of key combination and the brain kinda takes over and fills in the rest of a different word.

    Haven't you ever been writing and accidentally written the wrong word? It's the same idea. The keys don't have to be near each other.

  • kanojo1969, on 07/06/2009, -1/+26The most obvious explanation is that your fingers start developing memory not just where specific keys are, but entire words. Then, when you send a 'not', sometimes it gets confused and types 'now'.

    This has nothing to do with key proximity, because it's an entire word. It seems to be more related to frequency of usage. If today I've been typing 'will' more often than normal, then one time when I ask for 'wall' it's quite likely I'll type 'will' instead.

    This happens to me dozens of times a day, because I spend 10 or 12 hours a day typing. Even with Digg posts, I do at least one re-read of what I've typed after submitting it, and I will find typos like that all the time.

    And I do this with much bigger words, stuff like automatic and automotive, and I literally have no idea that my fingers ***** it up until I read it later.

    I curse the 4 minute edit limit on digg, because I cannot see errors if I proof the textbox while it's still active. I have to submit the message and then proof it, and edit if necessary. I have no idea why I can't detect stuff earlier, but I chalk it up to yet more brain weirdness.
