- SheilaNoya, on 11/11/2007, -28/+710Wow. Religion sure has changed from when I was growing up. It used to be all about love and helping your fellow man. The Evangelicals have now turned Christianity into a religion of fear and hate. That's sad.
- Audacitor, on 11/11/2007, -45/+661Religious prejudice is just ***** moronic. I was open about it in my high school on the bible belt fringe, and it sparked some interesting debates/salvation attempts.
One girl got in a not heated but friendly debate with me, and the next day brought a paper supporting Christianity. I sat down with the paper and wrote down counter-arguments for all the points it made, then handed it back to her. She gave up.
Then another time, another girl just gave me this "God Science" book out of nowhere. Weirded me out, since I'd never talked to this girl in my life.
Finally, there was one heated debate during play practice. I know it'll probably bite me for mentioning it, but my mom got involved in that one, and pretty much kicked their illogical asses. - HowieHardcore, on 11/11/2007, -4/+518"Freedom of religion means... you must believe [in God]". Hilarious.
- felman87, on 11/11/2007, -6/+418Pretty sure Ben Franklin would disagree with her.
- atdigg, on 11/11/2007, -14/+358Religion of love and compassion strikes again.
- Okari, on 11/11/2007, -13/+334"Get off our country."
With pleasure. Enjoy Emperor Bush. - mishabear, on 11/11/2007, -11/+253She probably "learned" all she wrote in the letter at church.
- juicebag, on 10/10/2007, -4/+237That's odd. It works very well for this article.
- Audacitor, on 10/10/2007, -10/+169Above comment posted in wrong ***** story. Guess that's what I get for looking at two atheism related stories at once.
- resplence, on 10/18/2007, -3/+149Their illogical asses? Where did you get that from?
"I don't care if they have never committed a crime, atheists are the reason crime is rampant."
Oh, I see. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/24/2007, -5/+149Did anyone else read this article in their head with an extremely red neck accent with out intending to?
- jdoe562, on 10/10/2007, -15/+147"People like this woman is probably a major reason why people like you and I are atheists."
If you "is" (i see what you did there) an atheist because you don't like people like this, then you are stupid. You should be an atheist because it makes logical sense, not because you are butthurt that some religious person said something bad about atheists. - nicksauce, on 10/10/2007, -2/+124Mutes get out of america! yes we have the freedom of speech, but that means you still have to speak!
- carterbaldwin, on 10/14/2007, -8/+127not sure who she's writing too - can't she have god smite us all?
Though, I suppose if she waits long enough, she'll get to see us burn in the fires of hell when Jesus descends to take all of his followers up to heaven. Because Jesus was all about burning people alive. - mediablitz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+116not to worry. 95% of diggers don't read the stories...
- patthew, on 10/10/2007, -2/+107Well where the crap are we supposed to move to, Rapture?
- Subterfug, on 10/10/2007, -2/+101LOL
Freedom of religion means you can believe in Baptist, Methodist or Catholicism. That's GOLD. - Cowwan, on 11/06/2007, -4/+96Where does the line start to shove my foot up this woman's ass?
- Crimsoneer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+78Not only that, but notice how she doesn't seem to include Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, or anything else in her list of deist religions:p
- ultraJesus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+79I'd hit it.
With a shovel. - Mentosan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+72Can't we all just keep fishing?
- Christ0s, on 10/10/2007, -2/+70the problem is most people don't seem to be able to tell the difference between religion and ethics. they think that morals come from god and without a belief in god you have no morals. but ethics/moral have existed long before Christianity and its is possible to be ethical without a belief in god
- zaii7, on 10/23/2007, -8/+76people from alabama are a special breed
- chyya, on 10/10/2007, -6/+71where have you been the last 1800 years? religion hasnt been about love and helping ever since jesus left.
- DrMonkeyLove, on 10/23/2007, -5/+62"How can you see a baby born and not believe?"
Uh, because I understand biology and realize it has nothing to do with God sticking his magical hands up some woman's crotch. - DrMonkeyLove, on 10/10/2007, -1/+57As Dawkins suggested may be true, I bet there are far fewer atheists in prison than Christians in prison.
- Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -11/+62You know you can retell the story and lie about the embarrassing 'mom' aspect right?
Us atheists can lie, cheat & steal all we want, because we don't believe in hell! - Xvash2, on 10/10/2007, -4/+55Interesting. Not only have the Christian leaders turned their religion into a place of fear and hate, but they've also done it with our very country. Fear the terrorists, hate the muslims. Fear the criminals, hate the atheists.
- bugsy187, on 10/10/2007, -7/+57Well if you don't like it you can... get out!
- chrisbasham, on 07/22/2008, -4/+53I'm a Christian, but I find that offense and totally contrary to the Word of God. Did Jesus try to send those who didn't believe in God outside of the Judea? I don't think so. This person needs his priorities straightened.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -21/+68Sounds like she'd get along nicely with Bin Laden.
- Ulisses, on 10/10/2007, -1/+46You've got a point.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/10/2007, -6/+50Doesn't mean you should.
- Pake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+44I'm insulted with no mention of the FSM, Pink Unicorn, or Russell's Teapot.
- XopherMV, on 10/10/2007, -3/+45Actually no, you can't lie, cheat, and steal all you want. Perjury, fraud, and theft is against the law. You don't need hell when you have the police, the judicial system, rape-you-in-the-ass prisons.
- JavertHolmes, on 10/10/2007, -18/+59For all you know, this article could be written by a non-christian pretending to be an ignorant christian and pushing the stereotype further. It's fun to jump on stuff like this, but it doesn't really help much with the core rift between religions and those who choose not to observe any formal religion.
On the other hand, assuming this isn't a Photoshop job/parody, the paper that published this likely has a piss-poor department to weed out crap like this.
For the record, I'm agnostic. - cpugeek2214, on 10/26/2007, -0/+41Ben Franklin is a huge hero and idol of mine. He had great views on what America would stand for and what it meant to him. My favorite quote ever is from him. "They who can give up essential liberty for a little temporary security, deserve neither liberty nor security."
- resplence, on 10/10/2007, -1/+42Statistics actually confirm that. I don't have the data on me but you can look it up.
- Audacitor, on 10/10/2007, -3/+43It does, I was lucky. Here's where it's supposed to go: http://digg.com/offbeat_news/He_s_an_Atheist_you_k ...
- xister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+38You don't have the data on you? Dude- you're on the internet...
http://www.holysmoke.org/icr-pri.htm - tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -9/+47Hey, at least some of them were nice enough to do what they thought would help you out. Don't be so mean :)
On the subject of the picture, that letter is disgustingly bigoted. - Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -7/+45"prejudiced against religion" What??? STFU and GTFO...
I don't care if your Christian or fvcking satanic, all the guy did was recount his own experience. of being bombarded by Christians.
Sure, what he said doesn't make Christians look good.... it makes them look like fanatical morons and with just cause -- your comment about prejudice just reinforces that!. - fLUx1337, on 11/06/2007, -8/+45I'm a proud Atheists, IMO theirs no god, no man up in the sky, who nobody has seen, heard or had any real contact with.
But I also have nothing against people who think hes real, they think what they wan't as long as they are happy.... - ElbridgeGerry, on 10/10/2007, -9/+45This comment displays the average size of an evangelical's compassion.
- bmobile, on 10/23/2007, -1/+36And 76% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
- LowROI, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35here's the other two stories from the "opinion column" that day.
"As a Christian and a nurse, it was with great sadness that I read the article regarding Gail Pepin in the Oct. 11 The Augusta Chronicle. She feels left out and unable to find her place because she's an atheist.
Not only am I sad for her but for her patients. What kind of nurse can work in a hospital and not see God's hand? Miracles only he can perform are done every day. How can you see a baby born and not believe?
You can donate all the blood, money and time you have, but until you have your life right with God your destiny will make the World Trade Center attack look like building blocks. Once again, we have had a wake-up call. Once again, so many refuse to wake up.
Binnie Jones, Hephzibah, Ga.
I can't believe Oct. 11 was such a slow news day that The Chronicle had to put the article with a picture of Gail Pepin pondering the atheist role.
I'm sure, especially on the one month anniversary of the terrorist attack, there might have something more news-worthy to publish.
Marjorie A. Bell, McCormick, S.C." - Ibox, on 11/06/2007, -3/+35Believe what you want, screw what you want, Don't believe ***** if you want...
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32High religious leadership has always been self-protective to the point of exterminating the opposition. Rank and file religion in the US used to have something to do with forgiveness, something to do with taking care of the poor, and something to do with not judging, lest ye be judged. That started changing with Jerry Falwell, Liberty University, and The Moral Majority. Falwell isn't responsible for the entire change, but he certainly was a spark.
Now rank and file religious belief is about pointing fingers and feeling superior. This makes me sad. - MrsButtersworth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34Thats really amusing. Its not athiests that took prayer out of schools. Its, ironically enough, people of OTHER religions being offended by schools passing along Christian beliefs to their non-christian children. People of religion took the religion out of schools, not the non-believers. I laugh.
- Jotaro, on 10/10/2007, -7/+38These are the type of extremists that give religon a bad name, just remember that they are the vocal few
