What the hell did you expect? - bwjacket, on 07/20/2008, -0/+29"Well, obviously this blue stuff is land."
- purty707, on 07/20/2008, -10/+39website from 1482?
- Kotjze, on 07/20/2008, -2/+31The world had quite a lot of nicely formed paths all over it back then.
- cosmicastaway, on 07/20/2008, -0/+27Educated people knew the earth was round for over two-thousand years before this map was made. Eratosthenes of Cyrene first accurately deduced the diameter of the earth in about 220 BC; in 1482, a spherical earth would have been common knowledge. Definitely for cartographers.
- ThatEvilGuy, on 07/20/2008, -9/+27Affrica, Evropa? give that guy a ***** spell checker.
- CiDaemon, on 07/20/2008, -4/+20Odd to look at...until you realize the white parts are land and the greenish parts are water. Duh.

- Alex2, on 07/20/2008, -5/+15Stupid site doesn't load.
- CosmicH, on 07/20/2008, -3/+13Earth looked so different back then.
- GavinZac, on 07/20/2008, -0/+9The 2nd "Angel" from the left on the top row is 'blowing' directly down on ireland - 'under' ireland is great britain (between them is a strangely green coloured ilse of mann) and under that is mainland Europe. ireland is marked as iberna (from the iverni tribe of munster that an earlier traveller had met, with their name adjusted to suit the greek perception of life there, as 'hibernus' meant wintery - ireland was later called hibernia), mann is labeled labeled as morni and britain is albion iula (or something to that effect - albion is the important part).

- Joshuarr, on 07/20/2008, -10/+15I'm kind of glad those guys kept trying.
- crash331, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6They are called rivers.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+41. Following the Latin standard, the letter "U" was generally written and chiseled as "V," so it's actually "Europa."

2. English spelling in anything close to its current form was not standardized until the 1750s with Samuel Johnson's "Dictionary of the English Language": http://www.universalteacher.org.uk/lang/languagech ... Even then it took some time to catch on, so if you run into earlier works with "proper" spelling, it just means that they have been edited to make them easier for modern readers to digest. - inactive, on 07/20/2008, -2/+6Another Mirror - http://intensecoders.com/?page_id=57
- crash331, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Thanks for the link without the gay flash.
- jasmus, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I did realise that after I posted, but lacked the motivation to correct it as I knew someone here would do it for me. Thanks for your input, you comment is important to us.
- Ursapater, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4It took me a minute to realize that too. After all we're used to maps depicting water as blue.
- Lith25, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Funny for once.

- rearlgrant, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3About the time this map was being drawn, Moctazuma II was about 20.... And Cortez was yet to be born.
Stuff like these maps and their significance makes me ponder what I don't know, and what the hell have I done with my life. - tidu, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4It must have been hard living in those times surrounded by all those giant penises.
- nolesfan247, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2This map was conceptualized by Ptolemy in his time, but the image is of a woodcut of the map, made in 1482, read the caption on the picture of the map.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptolemy#Geography - Monkeydew06, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Maybe we should kiss, just to break the tension...
- nicmakaveli, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2the map maker may took it more literal than he should have
