"Gypsies" is not a new "PC-speak word" as most Romani are not Muslim. In any case, the article did not say "Gypsies" Tarnum did.
"Mediterranean appearance" can apply to many religions as the birthplace of the three major religions was is the Middle East. For example, Israeli's can have a Mediterranean appearance, but they are likely Jews, not Muslim. Also, Cypriots (probably considered the gold standard for Mediterranean looking people) are Greek Orthodox.
