- GeorgeWKush, on 06/28/2009, -9/+171Happy to see a photo of an F-22 actually breaking the sound barrier, instead of it only making a subsonic Prandtl-Glauert cloud.

- marmotjmarmot, on 06/28/2009, -8/+115Tower, this is Ghost rider requesting a flyby.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -4/+83I have a friend with a mustache just like that! Dugg
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -3/+76An awesome display of technology. It's supercruise speed is listed at 1,220mph and that is before afterburners.
- lex0nyc, on 06/28/2009, -5/+78You shur talk pretty.
- DeskFlyer, on 06/28/2009, -1/+57Negative Ghostrider, the patt- ah ***** it, do whatever the hell you want.
- vroom101, on 06/28/2009, -11/+61#1. An F-22A Raptor with wingtip (trailing) vortices AND a Prandtl-Glauert (P-G) Cloud!?!? That is a spectacular shot! Here's why I think the cloud may be a P-G Cloud. Look at the entire photo sequence of this USAF B-1B Lancer bomber's flyby, especially photos 11 and 12: http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw-20041216.htm
Now read Dr. Mark S. Cramer's "Wingtip and Prandtl-Glauert condensation on a B1 bomber": "http://web.archive.org/web/20060615085526/www.gall ... (web.archive.org/web/20060615085526/www.galleryoffluidmechanics.com/conden/b1b56.htm)

(huge) via http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw-200905.htm (#5) - thesandbender, on 06/28/2009, -4/+46Prandtl-Glauert clouds are generated in the transonic range ... not the subsonic range. The transonic range is when portions of the airflow are supersonic and others are not (or more casually slightly above and below critical mach). This causes changes in the airflow and pressures... one of the reasons that early supersonic projects had so many problems. They didn't understand this transition and it's effect on the plane and it's control surfaces. Even today transonic aerodynamics are a heavily study area, both for aerodynamic efficiency and reducing or eliminating sonic booms that make supersonic flight over populated areas undesirable.

- kdmkdmkdm, on 06/28/2009, -0/+26BILLY'S VOICE COULD CATCH ANYTHING
- TheOneKen, on 06/28/2009, -0/+23You don't need a stealth aircraft to attack defenseless countries.
- HappyScrappy, on 06/28/2009, -0/+21The Concorde had afterburners and used them for certain portions of flight, like climb.
It did have supercruise capability (supercruise means supersonic speeds without afterburners) and used that for most of the flight so that it could fly farther and use less fuel. - Fixhotep, on 06/28/2009, -2/+22I'm so sick of puns, I'm gonna jet.

- 9portal, on 06/28/2009, -0/+18afterburners or re-heat is the injection of fuel into the jet exhaust that burns like a rocket engine to add extra thrust. It is how supersonic fighter planes go supersonic, until the latest generation like the F-22 and Eurofighter which have the ability to 'supercruise' which means supersonic with no afterburner. Good thing about it is that afterburner uses lot more fuel and can only be maintained short time before plane runs out of gas, but supercruise just keeps on cruising.
- TheOneKen, on 06/28/2009, -1/+18It's not a fighter bomber. It's an air superiority fighter. It can carry a couple of bombs, but that was an afterthought.
- ExoticKosher, on 06/28/2009, -2/+18DUGG FOR HONORING ALL CAPS DAY!
- jasdf, on 06/28/2009, -2/+18Concorde did too have afterburners. Why make comments that are so easily proven wrong with 5 seconds of research.
- burntcookie90, on 06/28/2009, -0/+14decepticon*

- Theuderic, on 06/28/2009, -0/+13Wikipedia: "Prandtl–Glauert singularity effects can be readily observed on a humid day by successfully cracking a whip. A visible cloud is produced at the point where the tip of the whip goes transonic."
You know I'm gonna go and try this now.
Oh, and thanks for the science lesson. - TaylorSPL, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12You don't?
- wombat767, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12I don't think that that guy said that he figured it out using his own simulations. He was explaining what it is from. He wasn't trying to sound like he was the one who discovered that.
- Skuzzlbut, on 06/28/2009, -1/+13It better be cool for it being the most expensive air-to-air combat weapon in the history of organized warfare
- Nintendesert, on 06/28/2009, -1/+12This is the same kind of thinking that led to the stoppage in teaching pilots gun skills and dog fighting skills before the Vietnam war. With the advent of missiles people thought air to air combat was over. It was fire and forget and your enemy is done. The US pilots were shred by chinese, russian and north vietnamese pilots. This is why Top Gun was brought back.
You can't predict how the next war is going to be fought. - jasdf, on 06/28/2009, -1/+12Yes, the former Air Force chief of staff took it to Mach 1.7 without afterburners. To be fair though, Concorde flew at Mach 2.0 without afterburners.
http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?storyID=123009594 - puddininmyeye, on 06/28/2009, -1/+12You are just being thick because you are chinese and don't want to acknowledge that it's a cool american plane. You know that air superiority is a part of winning any conflict.
- PeterGandalf, on 06/28/2009, -0/+11Yea but what if we get invaded by aliens? We are going to need a bad ass fighter to take them on... haven't you seen independence day?

- slowz3r, on 06/28/2009, -0/+10No, The Comanche was never put into full rate production, because it was deemed to costly. As of now there are around 200 F-22's. Instead of building around 800 they cut the production run in half and will be focusing more money toward the F-35 JSF
- kp1197, on 06/28/2009, -1/+11Congratulations. You just revealed you own a whip.
- kevro, on 06/28/2009, -4/+14YOU ARE NOW GOING FASTER THEN SOUND....YOU CAN NOT HEAR ME BECAUSE MY VOICE CAN NOT CATCH YOU.

Maybe his ego is writing checks his body can't cash. - Polycarp87, on 06/29/2009, -0/+10Damnit I was excited to answer that question. I feel like I was in the front row in school with my arm in the air saying "me me call on me!" and the teacher called on someone else. I will have to settle for giving you a digg...

- Nintendesert, on 06/28/2009, -0/+9That's ok, since he doesn't control funding. The Democratic Congress does and they aren't cutting it.
- CaptainPedantic, on 06/28/2009, -0/+9Your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter
- BottledViolence, on 06/28/2009, -1/+10The reason for these aircraft is to maintain air superiority for the next 40 or so years. The reason air superiority fighters are useless is precisely because we have air superiority fighters. The idea of wars being fought in cities is entirely too simplistic. How are the weapons made and transported there? The transportation, manufacture, and all the other logistics are made vulnerable. The reason the US is fighting asymetrical wars is because there is no one who can fight a conventional war on equal terms.
- TheOneKen, on 06/28/2009, -2/+11"Stimulus" and welfare is bankrupting the country.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -2/+11too bad that they quit making those.
- TheOneKen, on 06/28/2009, -0/+9Yes. Although the 'A' after 22 doesn't mean the same thing as an 'A' before the -22. A prefix 'A' means attack. A suffix 'A' means the first model.
- RuthlessPirate, on 06/29/2009, -2/+11I'd like to see an SR-71 maneuver like the F-22 though.
- cosworth99, on 06/28/2009, -3/+12This thread is all kinds of awesome.
