- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40I'd live there, honestly, how sick would it be to be the only person living in a whole town like that? Who cares if it's a pile of *****?
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I guess you arent' big on consuming food, drinking liquid or having flushing toilets?
- Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Brave photographer. I'd be scared to death walking around in buildings like that..
- Petrarch1603, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25it gave me chills, many people put a lot of work into those buildings. Its sad to see it all crumble away
- Crossmenjeff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I'm thinking Live-fire Counterstrike Tournament. At a minimum, ultimate paintball.
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21A chemical toilet, nonelectric steam distiller, and some seeds, and you'd be set!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Imagine having the best paintball arena...***** it let's go!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Amazing how mother nature can take back land in such a short period of time.
- Garda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Reminds me of a documentary i saw one time about chernobyl. The entire city is now abandoned because of all the radiation. Such a shame. Although, i guess all the children born with cancer and all the mangled foetuses are probably much more tragic than the abandoned buildings
- Rayza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I love picture tours of abandoned places. Reminds me of Day of the Dead or The Omega Man. So creepy..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21For some reason the phrase “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job!” comes to mind.
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14isnt that AOLs campus?
- BobbyOnions, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Reminds me of http://www.kiddofspeed.com/
Very good, regardless. - okokitsme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Not just Chernobyl, but about 600 small towns and villages were abandoned and even bulldozed and buried in tons of sand/earth, to keep radiation under control.
I have been at an exhibition on Chernobyl too, in Barcelona, and it's hard to believe the way the government hushed and buried reality, literally. - herro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14no. you shouldn't.
- jeffreym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Looks like Flint, Michigan after Ford left.
- gamesector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeh I was thinking that too, heh.
Anyway for people that are interested in this kind of stuff I'd recommend http://www.abandoned-places.com. It's a great site with tons of pictures - the photgrapher is a pilot that gets to fly all over the world and visit some really cool/pretty damn scary places. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10yeah that does remind me of silent hill, if the biulding were closer together it would be almost the same. I would love to have an airsoft match in a town like that.
- iDigg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12isn't that where they shot "silent hill" ? ;-)
- Rojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9America in 40 years? possibly. Imagine all the things you could do with abandend land like that.
- lockfist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Doesn't look as bad as Flint, MI ...and people still live there :-/
- boohoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8anyone seen parts of chicago or st louis? looks just like this, except worse. at least there are no beggers or drug pushers on these dilapidated streets.
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow and i thought the type of buildings in half life 2 were totally made up! Hell one of those buildings even has the ladder going to the roof just like in half life... what great inspiration!
- AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yea , imagine you actually get a community to build up and then make the town prosperous again, then the government comes in and asks you to leave and pay taxes for the amount of time you have been illegally squatting on their land.
Bummer. - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I just checked out kiddofspeed.com, that's a very cool site.
- stevetures, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5maybe half life 2, maybe silent hill, but definetly "Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl"
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/stalker/screenindex.html?page=6
(been waiting for this game for far too long) - vanessapratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There were similar images in a documentary shown in Australia called "Peking to Paris" where they stumbled upon an abandoned Soviet city that had statues of Lenin, etc, still intact.
- usp8riot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The radiation won't die off 'til 2525, or so I read. Imagine the people there now and if they live and breed there for centuries. They may evolve to have somewhat radiologically immune bodies, which would be a boon for the medical community.
- RyanZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Can anyone say parkour?
- figvam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now will the englishrussia guy stop stealing others' photos?
http://oleg44.livejournal.com/91801.html
He eved watermarked them with his site url.. how lame. - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://englishrussia.com/images/abandoned_city/18.jpg
this is quite ....scary. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14(Halfway Down) "Probably now the ghosts of the students still wander by nights, moving the chairs."
Oh get real...
Cool photos though. - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3This would be a great place to shoot a Half-Life movie (for city 17). And I remember (also from Russia, right?) there was another digg story with photos of some futuristic building that was abandoned and photos of ships that were washed up on shore with really wide beaches HL2 style.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK then, well the site was dead when I tried to access it, out of courtesy I posted the duggmirror link. I see blackdogone below had problems too, and whiskeysquared pointed out my comment to him.
For all you Digg n00bs out there, you don't need to digg down Dugg Mirror links, they are NOT spam. Did I really have to explain myself and say:
"Site is dugg, here is the dugg mirror link. Dugg Mirror is a free service that downloads backup versions of pages posted on Digg, so that once they are rendered offline by the 'Digg Effect', you can still browse the photos. Please click the following link".
Thanks for modding me down for being helpful. - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5yeah I mean, he probably was being serious...
'get real' baby...what is this? 1990? - usp8riot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a Carpenter, it's sad to see all the work from great Craftsmen going to waste. Good thing someone photographs thems for archival purposes. I try to do the same myself for old buildings/shacks. Buildings and houses are an under-rated form of art.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good example is the Dixie Square Mall in Harvey IL (as seen in the Blues Brothers).
It's been crumbling since they finished filming in 1979.
http://www.dixiesquare.com/Photos.html - droversoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like Camden, NJ with more grass.
- Rezzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did anyone else happen to catch the over-the-top captions? Kinda killed the pictures for me, but eerie nonetheless
- usp8riot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He's been hit by......a smooth criminal!
- rkettner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hell of a place to play a massive game of paintball... assuming the buildings aren't too far appart.
- whiskeysquared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These abandoned pics are pretty sweet. Can't remember what the site was, but not too long ago someone posted a link to a bunch of pics of the Russian underground, and there was also the "illegal movie" that was filmed there recently. Anyone else remember checking that out, and/or remember where it was?
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Squatter's dream...
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Reminded me of Half Life 2
- jtcalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was wondering the same thing. Some of the shots inside of the school look very similar to locations in the film.
- mementh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow... for those that don't feel moved.. remember.. if anything happens and man dies off.. in 20-30 years.. that is what our towns will look like..
Its the unknown memories... i got chills... the lives that will never talk again...
its very interesting... i wonder though.... - Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Smacks of urban legend? Russia Collapsed, this story is probably true of many places in Russia. A country like Russia is so large, smaller towns would not be able to get support.
- AssultMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm with you on that... It just has that special mood that I like. I guess we're weird. :)
Google "kid of speed" for some awesome photos of the "dead zone" in Chernobyl. - GutterMoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone think the weird round thing with eyes in the one cafeteria photo looks like Kirby? How many years was this done before the game was released?
- Balgor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google Centralia, PA. There's an underground coal fire there that started 40 years ago and it's still burning today.
