- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -12/+73The most importans is teeths to be healthy, no matter white or not..
- camilos007, on 09/24/2008, -27/+68The color isn't the only difference. The British have the most deformed teeth in the developed world.
- CharlesDance, on 09/24/2008, -19/+56When Americans make that crack about bad teeth I always laugh because of how vain and petty it is. It's just a reaffirmation of how ***** the culture and the ideals it promotes is.
- ousthouse, on 09/24/2008, -2/+38I understand the teeth thing now.... but how come the british always walk around wearing monocles and ascots?
- MacBookForMe, on 09/24/2008, -8/+44It is very simple: white is more white in America
(or we save on teeth whitening and dental cosmetics surgery, too much)
(or we drink too much English breakfast tea and dark brown Guinness)
(or there is much more sunny in Hollywood)
(or we are closer to the EU, LHC and CERN - mutations)
.........etc...... - algaeturd, on 09/24/2008, -10/+46Thos brits can eat corn on the cob through a picket fence.
Actually, Americans have very fake looking teeth. They're not supposed to be glow in the dark white, they're supposed to be ivory. Ever watch a movie filmed from the 70s that's been remastered? Even the leading men and women have off white teeth. Why?
Because that's what color they are before they're spray painted white by famous celebrity dentists. - tbredofsin, on 09/24/2008, -11/+45I'm an American with the British on this one. Our obsession with tooth whitening is just silly and goes way beyond what normal, correct dental hygiene should offer. And braces? Why deal with them if you don't need to? Unless your teeth look horrifically bad or you have actual functional problems with chewing, brushing, or flossing, why go through the time, trouble, and expense? Slightly crooked teeth are completely natural.
- dezweber, on 09/24/2008, -19/+52I wonder if there is a link between straight teeth and the gun control problem we have here in the US...
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -13/+43The British are inbred....too many teeth, eyes too close together, and large, floppy ears....comes from years and years of blue-blood cousin ***** (no offense).
- amneosis, on 09/24/2008, -7/+31British with coffee & tobacco stained teeth and proud.
- CharlesDance, on 09/24/2008, -6/+30Non taken, I was actually making a joke in my comment, a brazen contradiction of sentiments making it hypocritical and so hilarious. I don't believe you guys have a ***** culture, you just have better teeth so you can jam burgers down your gullet quicker.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+22You mean American Actors Teeth vs British Actors Teeth.
I don't know many people in my own circle of friends with abnormally white teeth. Nobody's teeth are missing or overly yellow but I think Hollywood should never be used as an example of American normality. - dn11, on 09/24/2008, -0/+21I drink like 10 cups of coffee a day and I never had orthodontics - yet I still have nearly perfect teeth. Being American still has at least one advantage .... In all seriousness it might have something to do with flouride in municipal water systems in the US - which is probably going to give us all ass cancer or something
- countersoldat, on 09/24/2008, -1/+22When I was in France for a semester, my (American) guy and girl friends of mine all had our teeth complimented by young and old french men and women alike. It was interesting, because many people here in the states take straight teeth for granted (thanks mom and dad!!) but over there it was something that they made a big deal out of.
I have to say, a smile that has really crooked teeth does catch my attention, although I do agree that some of the whitening has gotten out of control. - inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+19No see, by "Americans" what you really mean is people in Hollywood. Because MOST Americans don't have cosemetics done to their teeth, most americans' teeth look natural because they are. In fact there was just an article the other day about how millions of children in the US have untreated tooth decay. Most americans aren't walking around with perfectly white and straight teeth. In fact even using the word "movie" in your statement should tell you just how wrong that assumption is.
- worseforwine, on 09/24/2008, -8/+27I'm a little annoyed at this article, its fairly common to have braces when you are young in America but this thing makes it sound like every single person has their teeth whitened and straightened on a regular basis. Simply not true, I think you would find that the lack of health and dental insurance makes even going for a regular check up prohibitive to many Americans. It seems more like a genetic difference, since people aren't repulsed by a crooked, discolored mouth in the UK those people are free to breed, over here maybe they die alone and childless.
- drmobutu, on 09/24/2008, -5/+23The real reason is that Britain was economically depressed, following WWII.
Meanwhile, America's Baby Boom generation enjoyed unprecedented post-war economic prosperity, which made things like orthodontistry available to the mass-market. - sandaboy, on 09/24/2008, -3/+20Really, it's Californian vs. British teeth.
We hear the comedy because American movies originate in California (Hollywood). And then it spreads like wildfire from there. - franklymister, on 09/24/2008, -1/+15And the butler - don't forget the butler always following them with the drink on a tray.
- jasdf, on 09/24/2008, -8/+22It is funny to notice the tone that this is written in (defending British lack of oral hygiene).
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -12/+24I always wondered about America´s fixation with flawless white teeth. Too much Ken n´ Barbie?
- cardyology, on 09/24/2008, -11/+23This should be called "nhs dental care vs private dental care."
- Haoie, on 09/24/2008, -2/+14That's enough, that's enough!!
- worseforwine, on 09/24/2008, -0/+12You hit the nail on the head, there is much MUCH more sunny in hollywood.
- sexybobo, on 09/24/2008, -4/+16We are not talking just about white teeth we are also talking about crooked teeth.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -9/+20Why would you think that? Their dental system sucks because it's free for everybody. Ours is amazing because we pay up the ass for it.
- shawngreg, on 09/24/2008, -2/+13This response made me laugh. Probably because I'm twisted.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -2/+13Yes, because laughing at the differences in teeth in other cultures is what americans do all day. We all walk around cracking jokes about how other people's teeth look, it's on the top of our priority lists. You know generalities make you look stupid.
- alphaterminus, on 09/25/2008, -2/+13HomeNucleonics: I doubt you can speak any of her native language at all.
- Recidivus, on 09/24/2008, -4/+15Or how about "cosmetic vs essential dental care". Not everyone in the world is obsessed with their appearance.
- Slym, on 09/24/2008, -3/+14What kind of silly Brit drinks coffee. Drink tea you fool...
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -3/+14I've never gone in for a cosmetic procedure and my teeth look nothing like your nasty British ones
- weeFred, on 09/24/2008, -1/+11Most dental practices in the UK are private now. It's a nightmare trying to get dental treatment on the NHS.
- growler1, on 09/25/2008, -0/+10We'll make exquisite corpses, though.
- vintagegeek, on 09/24/2008, -2/+12Hey, I watch Dr. Who. Bad dentistry no longer frightens me.
- HomeNucleonics, on 09/25/2008, -7/+16Yes if you have a teeths to be health then you must will propser for a long time!
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/24/2008, -1/+10I was lucky to have straight teeth that are fairly white. I do drink a lot of coffee and tea though so I imagine my teeth will have a nice lustrous yellow gleam before my final years. That's character.
- tbredofsin, on 09/24/2008, -4/+13Not a very apt comparison. Washing your hair, showering, and wearing clothes are matters of simple day-to-day hygiene and personal maintenance. Straightening your teeth is a (possibly) years-long permanent process that isn't necessarily critical to either personal appearance or good hygiene.
- ctenn2ls, on 09/24/2008, -3/+11Yeah, since it's an embarrassment to drink coffee or smoke and all... Who ***** cares if someone enjoys those things? I'd rather take a simple pleasure in those things than be run by a ruthless obsession with superficiality in appearance and personality. Long live vices.
- fandyboy, on 09/24/2008, -2/+10It's not free. It's subsidized but it's not free. Trust me, I'm going to see one next week.
- d3dm, on 09/25/2008, -0/+8Wrong. The ADA Seal of Acceptance that is on every box/tube of Crest toothpaste guarantees that there is no sugar or any other substance that would promote tooth decay.
More at ADA.org (http://www.ada.org/ada/seal/toothpaste.asp) - DaveDaveson, on 09/24/2008, -7/+15We brush our teeth and visit the dentist just as much as you do. The difference is that we don't go for as much cosmetic procedures as you. You went in reading this article with funny ideas and came out with that silly comment.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -2/+10+1 from the US. Coffee and cigarettes ftw
- yaveznodo, on 09/25/2008, -1/+8Now I know why the Yanks were late for both the Wars!! They were busy fixing their teeth. It all makes sense now :)
- waydee, on 09/25/2008, -1/+8It seems to me like a lot of Americans think British people just don't brush their teeth or visit the dentist?
Of course we do, the difference is what the culture finds acceptable - slightly crooked teeth aren't acceptable in the US so they take measures to fix this 'problem' early whereas only a small number of British kids will get braces because it isn't such a big deal here (and in Europe in general). Likewise perfectly white teeth aren't of much advantage here, if you want them theres nothing stopping you having them but the culture doesn't demand it in the same way as in the US.
The UK is very much like the rest of Europe in this sense, cosmetic surgery and procedures aren't as widely accepted/deemed necessary as they are in the US. Less widespread but still reasonably popular. - Slym, on 09/24/2008, -0/+7I don't think you understand how different a Brit is from another. We're the ***** of europe, except maybe Norfolk...
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+7"...everyone at the beach is perfect, you know, tan white teeth. I got white skin, tan teeth." -Bill Hicks
- p341250n, on 09/25/2008, -1/+8You are wrong. That is like saying a woman should get a boob job because she has saggy boobs. It just looks better, right? And what dentist do you go to? Last time I checked braces were around $5000. That isn't cheap to most people.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -7/+14Yeah the article seems to have been written to make the british feel better about having crooked, yellow teeth, while running down americans, even though we've got some of the best looking teeth in the world.
