I got the part about it being what happens when you splash milk into coffee, but I don't think in years of coffee drinking that I've ever had this sequence of events take place on the surface of my coffee.

As for drops and splashes, A.M. Worthington did the seminal work in the late 1800's (see "A Study of Splashes", published in 1904).
But, people have taken millions of pictures of mountains and flowers and people. Still, when you see a good one, it's worthy of note. Just because it's high-speed photography doesn't mean it's old news. It's just a technique, a tool. The results are what counts. Otherwise, people would be saying, "Oh, I've seen colored oil smeared on canvas before.
