- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50They're not music pirates!
They're music ninjas. - speedy11309, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38anyone know a list of the biggest "illegal" downloading schools?
way to fight the man, USC. we salute you. - n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30anyone else think it was University of Southern California?
- gigsgtox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26these are not ninjas, these are music pirates... those of us who are music ninjas dont get caught.
- Gholas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I was actually hoping that this was referring to University of Southern California.
I could have then used the line, "Everyone knows that P2P networks are full of Trojans." - halvertos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18***** the RIAA
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16my comment really sucked, so I baleeted it, in order to avoid looking like an idiot.
- CrappedCrusader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13This is Univ. of South Carolina, not Southern Cal
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22PSA:
This is in reference to the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA not the wanna-be community college UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"The association has sent 914 notices of copyright infringement to..."
Alright, stop right there. Only the NBA can be called "The Association." - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8GO *****!
At least we win at something. Well our baseball team pretty much *****' rocks, too. - Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Damn, an 80gb ipod? i gave my sister a spanish speaking tickle me Elmo that i got out of some dude's trunk.
- Bean945, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sets an example for other schools.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Congratulations guys! great work! :D
Sharing is Caring
*ILU* - semirhage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801. California achieved statehood some 45 years later. Seems pretty clear why USC would be used to describe the East coast school.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thank you USC.
Unofficially on behalf of Drexel University, I would like to thank you. :) - u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6either lower tuition cost or lower the price of music...
- drmessano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4People that go there?
I'm pretty sure every student i've known that goes to USC calls it, oddly enough, USC.
Oh, and the article is from a South Carolina newspaper
-1 for you! - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Maybe if you live on the left coast. Anywhere in the South, and USC is South Carolina. U$C is that "other" school. And besides, what good are Trojans without *****?
- native, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Good,
Now I know my sis @ USC can fill up the 80GB Ipod I gave her for Festivus. - r81984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This does not mean they do the most illegal downloading, it just means more USC students are ignorant enough to get caught. I imagine they were all using limewire.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Haven't we all learned to ignore the RIAA by now?
It's been what, 7 years since they started this "mp3 downloading jihad"?
Ignore them. They're insignificant. Download and have fun. - PPoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thank God we finally got the obligatory Sen. Stevens "internet tubes" joke.
I was afraid one single net related article would make it through without one. Thanks MadNuke! - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pretty much everyone who follows SEC sports, and probably ACC sports (USC was a founding member of the ACC) calls USC USC.
Yeah, I know, that only makes up the eastern half of the country, so I see your point that we are wrong to call my school USC.
/sarcasm - Katarn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Obviously it's not hard to be #1 in downloading when the University has a huge population of almost 40,000. Let's see the small rural colleges keep up!
More interesting would be to see the #1 College in music downloads _Per Capita_ - rrunboy12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4wrong school - nice job reading the article there
- falstaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Back in the Napster days, I worked in my University's computer lab (destroying Digg stereotypes, ain't I?), and the lab network drives were full of MP3s every day. They'd get deleted, but somehow all the good stuff fell onto a CDR for permanent archival first.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+327,000, not 40,000. But you're right. The per-capita would make for a better comparison.
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The article title should've been: "USC students are among the most copyright-educated people in the US".
How did the word "right" make it into "copyright" anyway? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. - johnthedebs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just to be fair (and believe me I'm all for cheaper music and sticking it to The Man, but we can't be so zealous as to be ignorant) there's a reason CDs haven't dropped in price. Sure, they could sell them for a few dollars cheaper (IMO $10 would be a nice round price point), but they have to make some money off these things, as well as pay people including (usually, hopefully) the artist for the creation of the work. The medium costs them a few pennies and I'm sure they can bang out the whole package for under $1, so we know it isn't expensive just because of the packaging and fact that it's on CD. CD players on the other hand, are considered quite so creative and sell far more copies. Prices plummet as newer technology comes out (DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, what have you) because the cost of manufacturing becomes cheaper and they need to maintain a price advantage to sell at all - this isn't like music where they have a monopoly on the work, others are trying to sell the same thing. Music (worth listening to) on CDs will probably always cost 10-15, give or take. Technology will always get cheaper. It's for drastically different reasons.
- omghi2u2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4RIAA's response to you:
Dear xxxLegalxxxContactxxx:
I am an attorney with the Recording Industry Association of America, Inc.
("RIAA"). The RIAA is a trade association whose member record companies
create, manufacture, and/or distribute approximately ninety percent (90%)
of all legitimate sound recordings sold and distributed in the United States.
Because many ISPs have requested that we give them advance notice, I am
writing to alert you to a forthcoming subpoena that will be served on you.
The subpoena will request the name, address, telephone number and e-mail
address of a user, customer, or subscriber of your system or network who
has infringed our members' copyrighted sound recordings. For your information,
that user was located at the following IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx on xx/xx/2007
at 9:12 p.m.(EDT).
Our outside counsel will soon serve the subpoena on you. Understand that you
have a legal obligation to preserve all identifying information of the user,
customer or subscriber in the meantime. Please take all steps to do so.
We have found that some ISPs choose to notify their users, customers or
subscribers about impending subpoenas. Should you choose to do so, we ask
that you please make this individual aware that he or she has a legal
obligation to preserve evidence that relates to our legal claims. This means
that, at a minimum, the individual must preserve the entire library of
recordings made available for distribution as well as any recordings that
were downloaded. Although the individual must preserve the recordings,
in order to avoid continued distribution of the recordings, the individual
should disable the share feature or uninstall the file-sharing software.
Please feel free to forward this email in its entirety if you wish.
We hope this advance notice has proved helpful. Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Recording Industry Association of America, Inc.

dmca@riaa.com - Fracture98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to the entire population of the United States, the RIAA is the most anally retentive group of unimaginative fossils desperately trying to protect their obsolete business model through mob tactics, extortion, and sabotage, ever to have polluted the face of the Earth.
- Katarn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah, yeah I guess it is 27,000.
http://sc.edu/aboutusc/ had two populations, I just read off the top one which is of 5 campuses (Whichever those are...)
On another note they have some mp3s to download on that page! - sanguinekane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It stands for the University of Southern California over Southern Carolina according to google http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=usc&btnG=Google+Search
As much as I hate USC, I gotta say that the Southern California version has to be more (in)famous than the South Carolina flavor. - luckyllama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Instead they're full of dicks--I mean *****... gamecocks...
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4WTF is "southern carolina"???
- doocefan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh boy, who bets the administration starts to crack down on all these kids. I wonder if they got free iPods like some schools offered. That would make it interesting, even more so.
- phil.busch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Marquette University thanks you as well. Now please send a diplomat to liberate ports for bittorrent on our network.
- isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3yea I did. On ESPN or any other college sports network Southern Cal is "USC" and South Carolina is "SCAR" when it comes to box-score abbreviations.
- WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4GO *****
- jake13jake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"RIAA spokeswoman Jenni Engebretsen said copyrighted material is in abundance on USC’s network."
Wait... wait, isn't EVERYTHING on a network someone or another's intellectual property? What if my school decided that I had copyrighted music on my computer? Would they make me delete it? How would they be able to tell whether or not I've paid for the music on my computer. In fact, how would the RIAA know that a song someone's downloading is one from their own existing collection? Everyone with a legal library should redownload their legal files "illegally" just so they can spit in the RIAA's eyes. - clemsontiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha and thats why i am at Clemson. we just have better ways of hiding it. yall even have a free music downloading service that the school pays for. why the hell are yall getting cought. oh well, go tigers
- opieum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey look,
The daughter of a republican congressman that lobbies for the RIAA.....if that isn't special interest, I have no idea what is. I can see it now *clairvoyant like fog effect*
Daughter: Daddy we need a law passed to execute anyone downloading music illegally. Death penalty with no chance for appeal.
Dad: Honey, we can't do that. It will be difficult to pass a law like that.
Daughter: Well I can buy you a new mansion with a "raise" I am getting from the RIAA.
Dad: That would still be difficult.
Daughter: Daddy!!!! I WANT IT NOW!!!! (throws a tantrum)
Dad: Ok, Ok, consider it done sweetums.
Daughter: You are the best daddy!! :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I NEVER buy music, its free...
- adamfalkofske, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Hey, if we're going to talk sports, we lost to the BCS champ this year by one point (they blocked TWO of our kicks) and we've won the NIT for the past two years. Don't put our sport programs down. Look out for Spurrier next year (#4 in recruitment, thanks). Have some faith, blooms. I take it you go to USC?
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2USC Class of 2003 Chemistry
We beat Syracuse in the NIT a few years ago. The next year they win the National Championship, we stay home. We beat Ohio State in a bowl game 2 years in a row, the next year, they win the National Championship and we stay home. Last year, we beat Florida on their home court, on our home court, and then we blow a 16 or however many point lead in the SEC championship game against Florida. They go on to win the National Championship, we win the Not Important Tournament, to the chants of "We're #66! We're #66!"
God I love my Alma Matter, but at the same time, I am completely realistic about our Basketball and Football programs. They suck. Our football team went 3-5 in the SEC this year. Inexcusable. Our basketball team is having by far the worst season yet under Dave Odom, and he is rewarded with a fat contract extension. And when we were shopping for Fogler's replacement, Bob Knight was interested, and we didn't even interview him!
But at least Baseball season starts next month! Omaha here we come! Some More! - drunkmuppet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm just glad my school refuses to divulge student information to the RIAA. We do have policies in effect to catch pirates like myself but these are minimal slap on the wrists. You get three strikes and then your port gets shut off (if you live in the dorm).... But to my knowledge theres no restriction on wireless ;)
The worst is when you go away for the weekend and spend the whole time worrying you left your 150 torrents uploading with no cap... think about that ... 3gigs up constant for 48 hrs....
Edit: Oh yea and the alternative they give us is ruckus??? ::vomit:: - doocefan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG, you guys are the *****. I get it now, Gamecocks. Now all those hats make total sense to me. I just thought they were guys wearing hats trying to start fights. Cool, now I know.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5sports? What? Baseball, and women's track and field (that's not really a sport though) yeah, but no, dude. Generally, USC is NOT known for sports.
- MadNuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hogue isn’t sure why USC had such a high number of download violations compared with other schools, but the university is looking to “tighten its pipeline” and make illegal files more difficult to transfer.
