- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+432True love and devotion right there.
- StarCrusher, on 10/12/2007, -8/+420Kinda puts my silly-assed little minor problems into prospective.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+377i feel terrible for them both. I hope they can reconstruct his face to be somewhat normal again. She must really love him...

pics of before and after. - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+226I'm surprised he hasn't gotten some sort of reconstruction done on his face yet. Must be really hard to see and here like that. I feel sorry for the guy. The government should pay for his plastic surgery.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -19/+218"True love and devotion right there."
If you TRULY love someone, it doesn't matter what they look like. So, yes, without a doubt, true love and devotion. - ZoTheGorilla, on 10/12/2007, -32/+224He is a Hero and She is a Hero Too!
God bless them both!
I don't know if I could do what either of them are doing. - hello_world, on 10/12/2007, -7/+173man it was so weird... i was shocked when i saw the photo, i laughed when i saw the girl, and now i feel sad. just so ***** sad. don't really matter if the girl loves him or not, he's alive after god knows what he's been through.
- dtd00d, on 10/12/2007, -10/+174@jinglee
I don't think anyone who is getting dugg up is trying to be funny. - returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -83/+226"pics of before and after."
Yea, senseless war will do that to you. - Cerealkillr, on 10/12/2007, -68/+200Thats not even remotely funny.
He was fighting for our freedom and he got that done to him.... And you make fun of him?!?!
Thats just horrible. - founderofpork, on 10/12/2007, -40/+168That's so sad... Man, ***** this war.
- lostradamus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+127The photographer obviously caught her at a bad moment. She looks relatively happy in the other pics.
- Valarauka, on 10/12/2007, -50/+162"Our freedom"? He was fighting for our corporate masters. Sad, but true. The fact that tragedies like this happen in war doesn't automatically make the war itself noble, just, or good.
And for those who ask "How can you disrespect the sacrifices of the dead and injured by calling it a pointless war?" - all I have to say is: How can you disrespect the lives and health and oaths of all those who are still there by putting them in harm's there for no good reason? They signed up to protect us, not to line Halliburton's pockets. - Unclekoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -38/+147***** You!
- utcursch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+99The photgraph titled "Wounded US Marine returns home from Iraq to marry" is by Nina Berman. It is winner of "World Press Photo of the Year" in the Portrait category. You can find the other winners here:
http://www.worldpressphoto.com/index.php?option=com_photogallery&task=blogsection&id=17&Itemid=146
Nina is the photographer and author of "Purple Hearts - Back from Iraq", which tells the stories of six American soldiers who came home from Iraq seriously wounded. You can find some pics here:

And a video here (22 MB):
http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue0412/video/purplehearts_300k.mov - Reziarfg, on 10/12/2007, -60/+151He wasn't really fighting for freedom. Oh, don't get me wrong, I support the troops and everything, I just don't support the silly war. Until there's some turban-clad guys attacking the US or preventing our actual freedoms, he's not fighting for OUR freedom, or our rights. More like the rights of those in Iraq, and even then, that is questionable.

"Yea, senseless war will do that to you."
Wouldn't ANY war "do that to you"? - robo73, on 10/12/2007, -4/+87That is the saddest thing I've seen in quite some time.
For both of them. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+84@estacado:
"If she really loves him, her facial expression wouldn't be like that."
If you look at the first link provided in the comments, there are pictures at the same wedding were she is smiling, and looks happy. Besides, imagine how she would feel thinking about how he would feel getting his photo taken like that, you can feel pity and love at the same time. - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+61She spent a year and a half living with him at the Brooke Army Medical Hospital where their relationship grew stronger than it ever was. Then she chose to marry him. I think they have a chance.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -15/+74"Marine Sergeant Ty Ziegel already had his life planned out, he would marry his girlfriend Renee Kline upon returning from his second tour of duty in Iraq.
But one fateful day a suicide bomber hit his truck, tearing apart his body and making him among the 20,000 soldiers that have been wounded in Iraq. He was blind in one eye, had a shattered skull, and most of his skin was burned off. Renee lived with Ty at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas for a year and a half, sharing Ty's every hope and fear. Their relationship became stronger than ever, and Ty and Renee moved back to their hometown in Illinois in July 2006, and got married in shortly thereafter."
Incredible. She lived with him for over a year in the Army Medical Center after he was injured before deciding to get married.
Amazing what one colossal political mistake can do to millions of lives. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -8/+66I want to buy that guy a beer.....or a truck full of them. And that girl gets much respect.
These are the kind of people who need to be having lots of babies in this country. - 1000RainyDays, on 10/12/2007, -5/+63For anyone who thinks that her "facial expression says a lot," you have to take into consideration that wedding photos are directed. She very easily could have been TOLD to look like that for the artistic factor. We have no idea what they're like when they're together without the pressure of a camera and busy photographer breathing down their necks.
- davebowker, on 10/12/2007, -12/+60Her facial expression does say alot. She seems distant, like she's somewhere else in her head. I can't say whether or not she still loves him, but maybe she feels a sense of commitment and honour in following through with the engagement?
I feel sorry for them both. - withershins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46I wasn't gonna diig this, I had conflicting thoughts about it, but then i checked out the other photos on this site, and was amazed by some of them! Don't stop with that one portrait, browse the site, it's amazing.
- MacBigot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43@Incidents
"I think her expression says it all."
No it doesn't. This does.

at least he came home, unlike so many others in this pointless corporate war
he's very lucky to have a woman like that in his life - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/article1294008.ece
- lostradamus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35This photographer is taking advantage of the situation. They are both obviously happy in the other wedding pics. He caught them at an awkward moment and is playing it off like it was the worst day of their lives. He is nothing more than a glorified paparazzi.
- Fungo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38This is the true price of war.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+47It get more and more pointless every day it seems...
- Tweezer93, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Easily the most compelling photo I've seen in a long time.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -36/+63blocked. go to ***** hell, dick.
- elfhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27The couple was on Oprah not too long ago. They had been dating before the guy went to Iraq and the girl married him after he came back because she really loved him. Here's a link to the story.
http://www.oprah.com/tows/slide/200611/20061110/slide_20061110_284_108.jhtml - sanman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32I think the Fighting Man takes the disproportionate blow for society, while the rest of us lounge around, enjoying the fruits of their sacrifice. That guy could have gotten burned like that in Kosovo, Somalia, Afghanistan, or even the beaches of Normandy. The Fighting Man doesn't get to choose which war or why. Of course all the shameless political activists will spin this picture in different ways, depending on which war it happened in, and whether they support that particular conflict or not. Pathetic.
- JHDesign, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27I've actually met this guy and his wife. His name is Tyler and he lives about 10 minutes from me here in Illinois. One of my good friends put on a benefit for him a few months ago to raise money for a new Harley Trike. The benefit was the first time that all of the motorcycle clubs and groups from this area were under the same roof for the same cause. Pretty incredible.
All of that to say, you will never meet a more thankful and appreciative couple in your life. As you can only imagine, Tyler and his wife have been though one of the hardest situations anyone could ever face. Whether you agree with the war or not, he did love serving this country and you won't hear him going around blaming others for his injury.
It's disheartening to see so many people making this a soapbox for their stance on the war. The fact is this guy made a conscious decision to join the Marines and serve his country like so many of us don't have the guts to do. Show him some respect and get off your soapbox for 5 minutes. - TheTap, on 10/12/2007, -11/+35Stop arguing about what he is fighting for, you've lost the purpose of this thread and photoset.
This man's live was altered forever, in a very horrible way and this girls dreams were largely shattered. They know that from now until death they will be stared at everywhere they go. This is a real gut check for these two.
Makes my problems seem so insignificant. - mattmoto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25The government better pay EVERY dollar of his facial reconstruction surgury. Thats one cause I would gladly see my taxes going to.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32Bush should be forced to look at that photo everyday for the rest of his life...
Now that we're in Iraq, I don't believe we can just leave, but damn Bush to hell for starting this senseless war. - SimonJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -12/+34I think I would be safe if I bet there is a couple in Iraq in the exact same position but caused by coalition attacks.
- wombat767, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24I think it is really cool that this girl was still willing to Marry him. But all of you bush bashers settle down. I really appreciate his sacrifice, and he was willing to go. Let's honor that instead of pointing fingers.
- carve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24That is a dedicated women, and he is a much more determined man than I. Call me weak, but I would have rather died. I think I'll get out of the military now.
adolfojp: His decision was to defend our country when called. It was George Bush's decision to go to war. Also, I'm sure he didn't force her to marry him- this isn't afghanistan. - estacado, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30Okay, I might have gotten carried away. It's only natural for her to feel uneasy with his new appearance. Nobody expects this kinds of tragedies to happen, and it's going to take time for her to adjust to her new situation. I myself have never been deeply in love, so, I don't know how powerful it can be. But I've seen love prevail in worse situations. He's a lucky guy to find a girl like her.
- cpuenvy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23“He joined the war to fight against the civilians because A) he was poor, or B) he enjoyed the adrenaline rush of it all.”
WOW exsst. You seem to be a real authority on the subject!
According to you, he joined and went to war because his family was poor. Nice. So, according to your brilliant logic, you have to be poor to join the military… Or, you just have to enjoy killing innocent people.
Dude, where the ***** do you come up with this stuff? - sandbird, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25twtmc, unfortunately, I don't know that there is much that can be done for reconstructive plastic surgery. The surgeons have probably already done what they can. For perspective, go to officerjason.com and look at the gallery (or you can google Jason Schechterle.) He is a Phoenix police officer who was almost burned to death when his car burst into flames after a collision. He's had 50+ surgeries, and he is still badly disfigured.
Tragic that this Marine was disfigured like this. Heartwarming that she still loved him enough to marry him. - cpuenvy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Thank you for your service.
- Absinthminded64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I also think about the Iraqi civilians that are among the wounded. When a number of people are killed by an IED there are an equal number of survivors that are sure to resemble this Marine.
- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23First off, I'm not a fan of this war - I think getting rid of Hussein was worthwhile - he killed over 100,000 of his own people over 24 years (some people say 300,000 but I prefer the Human Rights Watch figure)
After that.. the goals became fuzzy - but I think these people need something to help prevent total anarchy.
This man was wounded by a suicide bomb - It's a toss-up if it was Shia vs Sunni violence or a reaction to our presence there.
This is a guy who believes (believed?) in something bigger than himself - and felt that was more important than his personal safety and comfort.
We are screwed if people only do things for themselves - You can doubt his reasons and motives, but I gotta admire his guts and generosity to the rest of the world. -
