- dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62So, if a make up a list of "facts" that I pull out of my ass, will it make the front page of Digg too?
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55Looks like a huge amount of misinformation, along the lines of "You only use 8% of your brain" or whatever people like to say.
- jmzook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41Money is printed on paper, it's just paper that is made out of cotton fibers. Paper is not just a substance made from wood pulp.
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Bender: Why's this grand cigar so pricy?
Salesman: Well, as you can see, its wrapper is a piece of the original US constitution. It was hand rolled by Queen Elizabeth during her 'wild' years and was buried with George Burns until grave robbing space mushrooms... eh, well, you know the rest. - SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30My favorite: "Orcas (killer whales) kill sharks by torpedoing up into the shark's stomach from underneath, causing the shark to explode."
That's friggin' amazing.
At least one thing on there I know is not true though. - DoctaStooge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Why did you notice the clock at a Hooter's?
/joke - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24"I could just as easily post "50 facts you did not know" on my personal site and write ridiculous claims with no proof."
Welcome to Digg - EpicSA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24I could just as easily post "50 facts you did not know" on my personal site and write ridiculous claims with no proof.
I am not saying these are wrong but I wish that on these lists, the authors would include proof. It seems to me like he just compiled a bunch of FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD emails and put them online. - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24no it didnt
- Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -12/+33This is terrible information, and false at that. Dugg as inaccurate
- appetite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21i just think the title is funny:
"a list of things you may or may not know"
haha, that may or may not be interesting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19"No their similar. It's an honest mistake."
They're. - generic230, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Susan Lucci is not the daughter of Phyllis Diller. It's an urban legend, debunked on Snopes.com http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/lucci.htm

Sounding alike and rhyming are two different things - nubbler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17you need a vowel to rhyme
- FoxtrotYankee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18The "Wendy" one is wrong.

Also, the "No clocks in Vegas casinos" is not accurate. It's generally true but there are some exceptions. The poker room in Hooter's Hotel and Casino has a digital clock above one of the TVs. Also, the Las Vegas Hilton has a prominent clock in their Sports Book. - CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15My favorite:"A tiny amount of liquor on a scorpion will make it instantly go mad and sting itself to death."
That sounds incredibly false, but I still really want to try it. Like devindotcom said, just sounds like a load of misinformation. - ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Ahem... www.snopes.com

I'm too lazy to look up the rest. I think digg is becoming a prime example of "truthiness" - mattwho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Used to get these via email and once added my own made up fact to the bottom.
"An ant running at full speed never has more than one foot on the ground at one time"
Always hoped I would get it back someday. - nubbler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14liver and silver dont rhyme
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The fact that this is on the front page is an embarrassment to the entire Digg community.
- ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Donald Duck comics were banned from Finland because he doesn't wear any pants.
Not true, no doubt about it.
EDIT:
Astronauts are not allowed to eat beans before they go into space because passing wind in a space suit damages them.
That too, is fake. (i believe) - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Susan Lucci is the daughter of Phyllis Diller.
Let me be the first to say... Whoopdie doo
Some are true, many are questionable, especially the Orca one. Some how I dout an orca will torpedo half the sharks in the sea when it could just use its flipper to knock them outa the water like they do with their normal dinners. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"A tiny amount of liquor on a scorpion will make it instantly go mad and sting itself to death."
Damn, I would pay to see that! - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"So, if a make up a list of "facts" that I pull out of my ass, will it make the front page of Digg too?"
John Hodgman ('PC' from the new Mac commercials) actually did just that, except he wrote a book full of fictional facts, and it's been selling pretty well (I love the book, personally):
http://www.areasofmyexpertise.com/index2.html - superheroboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Haven't you heard the animaniacs poem?
"Roses are red
Violets are purple
Sugar is sweet
And so's maple surple."
See, it rhymes. - SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This is actually not true. Or well, only sorta true. The body at rest burns more calories under normal circumstances during the amount of time it takes to eat a piece of celery than you are consuming in said piece of celery. So you aren't gaining calories, but it doesn't have "negative calories."
- bennythewop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9you had a priori knowledge of fake facts? unbelievable.
- xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The scorpion + alcohol crap is total BS.
And I really doubt that apples have "negative" calories. They're filled with sugar. - latca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah the Heinz "fact" is incorrect.
The real reason is listed on the Heinz FAQ:
http://www.heinz.com/Consumer_faq.aspx#Miscellaneous%20Questions%20about%20H.J.%20Heinz%20Company - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper
Paper is a thin material produced by the amalgamation of plant fibres, which are subsequently held together without extra binder, largely by hydrogen bonds and to a large degree by fiber entanglement. The fibres used are usually natural and composed of cellulose. The most common source of these kinds of fibres is wood pulp from pulpwood trees, largely softwoods such as spruce. However, other vegetable fibre materials including cotton, hemp, linen, and rice may be used.
According to that definition, money is still printed on paper. - sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7that's awesome, and i swear i've read that before.
- undersky1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11and money (paper one) is not only made out of cotton, it's actually magnetic so the currency counter can in milliseconds detect the value of the bill. the paper is also specially scented so a US Custom and Border Patrol agent can use a portable gas-chromotographer to detect a large amount of it as prohibited by law to carry more than $10K of it across border.
- theotherme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Astronauts are not allowed to eat beans before they go into space because passing wind in a space suit damages them."
Has nothing to do with damaging the suit. A space suit is an enclosed environment. I believe this is more to protect the astronauts from themselves than anything else. - vanker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The 57 in Heinz 57 has nothing to do with varieties. HJ Heinz saw a shoe ad that said "21 varieties!" and thought it was a cool idea. He picked the number 57 because he liked it. It had nothing to do with the number of varieties that Heinz had at the time. At the time there were well over 57 varieties, and now there's well over 1500.
- *blu*, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top."
I am SO trying that. - simonfl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A list of Things You May Or May Not Know And That May or May Not Be True
- nate5182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Purple Burple rhymes.
That stuff was good! - spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Err...
Some of them are untrue :P
1. Susan Lucci is not the daughter of comedienne Phyllis Diller - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Lucci
2. Leonardo Da Vinci didnt invented scissors. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scissors#History
3. Donald Duck banned in Finland? Nope. http://www.snopes.com/disney/films/finland.htm - tpaine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top."
This is true ... well it works with grapes at least - LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7This is one of those emails that everyone passes around because they think it's amusing, but in the end is riddled with innacuracies. I should blog all the silly joke emails I get every day from my friends around the world and post that to Digg as well....
- Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@nubbler
I was about to type liver rhymes with silver. I got confused with sliver. - felis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why is it the sites I actually WANT to read get smashed to pieces quickly, yet this tripe remains serving packets of LIES?
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Facts I 'May or may not know'? So that'd be every fact that has ever existed then, since I either know it or don't.
- TheAngryMob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That's alliteration, not rhyming.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliteration - 3blocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper."
From the National Archives website
http://archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/treasure/declaration_facts.html
Q. Is the original Declaration of Independence written on paper?
A. No, the original was engrossed on parchment which is an animal skin specially treated with lime and stretched to create a strong, long-lasting writing support. The printed version is on paper and was read aloud from town squares throughout the colonies, so that those who could not read would receive the news about intended separation from England. - hcetrepus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Orange and vomit rhyme perfectly!
Boomer Sooner!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Celery has negative calories! It takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with. It's the same with apples!"
Well... yes, but you'd have to chew the celery for up to an hour. While celery does have very little calories, the amount of chewing you would need to do to negate them wouldn't be worth it. That being said, a Big Mac has negative calories... if you run in circles inside a sauna while wearing a parka. -
