A cross between a motorcycle, a Segway and 'Star Wars'
chicagotribune.com — Meet the Uno. The Uno's custom hoops aren't front and rear like a motorcycle's, but side by side and inches apart under the rider, rising and falling independently over the road as he leans the gyroscope-stabilized machine through effortless turns.

- lazyrussian, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2This was in TIME magazine a few months back - it's a really slick invention! :)
- dfeifer, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2I'll take one as soon as i can get one of those rubber suits that inflates in to a giant ball when you come off the bike.
- eggraid, on 06/30/2008, -4/+3Yes, but will it blend?
- 5urr3al5am, on 06/30/2008, -4/+2that's one of the dumbest things I've seen in a long time.. maybe we should just add a 5 foot pole in the middle and ride around like Wile Coyote? What do you really gain by riding around like a ***** on one of these things?
- Omano, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2I guess that hardest thing about owning this thing would be convincing people your NOT gay.
- mikoyski, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Wow it's the vehicle from "Spiral Zone"!
http://www.spiral-zone.com/tonka/cycle.jpg
- acmaurer, on 06/29/2008, -14/+9I know - at first I thought it was more like a motorcycle and there was a back wheel - but obviously not!
- AmyVernon, on 06/29/2008, -2/+3my first reaction, too!
- OpCzar, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1What part of "Segway" didn't you understand?
- revjustin2, on 06/30/2008, -0/+9There is a lot about a Segway that I personally don't understand.
- Issius, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Like why people would ride/buy one.
- Zalyster, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3I was just in Atlanta and saw some cops on segways. Like lol amirite?
- BrentDPayne, on 06/29/2008, -3/+26And I thought it would be scary to ride a motorcycle downtown. ;-)

- strafefire, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2One step closer to the bikes in Venus Wars:
- YoWhatDaFuxUp, on 06/29/2008, -7/+250Wear a damn helmet
- Gutterpunk, on 06/30/2008, -1/+57Helmet? That guy should wear a complete body armor!
- graemee, on 06/30/2008, -1/+25Need stormtrooper armour. Like those Speederbikes. That would be cool.
- spoulson, on 06/30/2008, -2/+10..and take off the douchebag glasses!
- peteophile44, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2those glasses are famous
- spxiii, on 06/30/2008, -2/+7Considering I would pass that thing on my bicycle...it probably isn't necessary just yet.
- Kormiku, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4agreed. it only goes like 15 miles an hour, which is like a fast-ish run.
- Issius, on 06/30/2008, -4/+2It's just too bad that most people run (fast) at around 10 mph. The fastest people are around 12-13 mph so saying that 15 is fast ISH is basically just wrong. On a bike however...you can at the minimum keep up with it although you'd get tired faster.
- auto98, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3Issius - actually the 100m olympic record is equivalent to a touch under 23mph - and that is just average speed, not even taking into account that they are running faster than that for part of the race.
- sv650touring, on 06/30/2008, -5/+1Issius - You may want to check your numbers. Many, many people have done 4 minute miles. That means they *averaged* 15MPH for a mile. I was in my truck at a park once and this ripped dude was practicing sprints. The first time he came past me, it was just a streak like the freaking starship enterprise going into warp. I promise you he was going MUCH faster than 15 MPH - closer to 25 or 30, I'd say. Combined with the sound of his feet hitting the pavement, it startled the hell out of me.
- sv650touring, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3OK, I checked and it seems he probably wasn't going over 23MPH, but damn if it wasn't amazing to see a human run by you at that speed.
- EnnuiStudent, on 07/01/2008, -0/+115 mph is a 4 minute mile. And that's not fast-ish. That's fast. Anyone hitting 4 minute miles is a world-class athlete, and would be offered running scholarships all over the country. Doing something like that would take years and years of competitive distance running. In fact, a brand of running shorts is named after the fame of the sub-4 mile, called "SUB 4".
For a shorter distance, say a quarter mile, would be 60 seconds. It's definitely achievable by more athletes, but noone would be calling that "fast-ish", unless you're talking to experienced sprinters.
- lowriderjohn, on 06/30/2008, -0/+10i live in kansas. we don't have helmet laws and i can't remember the last time i even saw a biker with a helmet on. for a state that hates evolution they sure cater to darwin...
- SakisRakis, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7I for one don't give a ***** if he wears a helmet or not. Why do you?
- sv650touring, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Maybe he has the same HMO as you.
- Blandyman, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Or maybe because he didn't really mean him but meant anyone who uses this should wear a helmet.
- gandhii, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1or maybe he is a douche who can't mind his own business..
- digitul, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1because this is digg and someone ALWAYS has to complain about the story, no matter what it is, they have to find something negative in it
- JoshJaros, on 06/30/2008, -2/+5That kid looks like a tool.
- Gutterpunk, on 06/30/2008, -1/+57Helmet? That guy should wear a complete body armor!
- dha07030, on 06/29/2008, -8/+215This vs. any other vehicle = instant death
- ddlow, on 06/30/2008, -8/+61Hmm yeah - but isn't that the same with any motorbike tho?
- BOFH2, on 06/30/2008, -0/+16bicycle too?
- Monkeydew06, on 06/30/2008, -3/+27Not really, a motorbike has a second making it less vulnerable to flipping sideways and slantways and longways and backways...
Charlie Bucket: And frontways?
Willy Wonka: ...and squareways and front ways and any other ways that you can think of!
Either way, you crash of this thing, your going down, in an awkward position. - Monkeydew06, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7*second wheel
- TheSnuffster, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Is it vulnerable to going through the roof?
- screensnot, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1If it's a glass roof.
- Gutterpunk, on 06/30/2008, -0/+106This vs. shallow pothole at high speed = instant death
- bosssmiley, on 06/30/2008, -0/+31This = New Golden Age of YouTube biker wipeouts!
- noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -1/+13So... using substitution....
New Golden Age of YouTube biker wipeouts! vs. shallow pothole at high speed = instant death
So we can deduce that watching crash videos while driving on bumpy roads at high speed is dangerous. - BOFH2, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5so we can shorten it DEATH
- ColonelTribune, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4YouTube wipeouts = natural selection
- revjustin2, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8It tops out at 15mph. I think you're chances of survival would be pretty good.
- PabloMac, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3I would rather watch YouTube wipeouts than read this article.
http://youtube.com/results?search_query=wipeouts&s ... - xcvbn, on 06/30/2008, -3/+5this + hitting the brakes=comedy
- Issius, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8RTFA. There are no brakes.
- ispeakasian, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2what the hell are brakes?
- arjie, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Ah yes, Issius, but are there any Kit-Kats?
- noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -8/+11Good thing we don't all think like you otherwise we'd have never got beyond speed-walking as our fastest means of transport.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/30/2008, -2/+26You clearly haven't seen all of the Segway wipeout videos.
It turns out when gyroscope stabilized vehicles like this get confused they generally just throw you at the ground. - noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -2/+22And? It turns out when you put a man into his first horseless carrage he's got a good chance of rolling it into a ditch. It turns out when you give a man his first steam engine he's got a good chance of it exploding. It turns out when you're trying to build the worlds first viable airplane you crash a few times.
It's called development, trial and error, if there are problems someone will find a way to fix it. - Gutterpunk, on 06/30/2008, -7/+2Even the biggest gyroscope in the world couldn't stop you from shooting forward if that thing got to a sudden full stop.
It's called inertia. Look it up. - noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -2/+9"Even the biggest gyroscope in the world couldn't stop you from shooting forward if that thing got to a sudden full stop.
It's called inertia. Look it up."
Just like there's nothing stoping you from shooting forward on a motorcycle, bicycle, roller skates, or a car if you come to a sudden complete stop. - snowpatrol, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1This isn't really an advancement though. There's no advantage of using this over a car and it's definitely a lot more dangerous.
- screensnot, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1@noahhoward
The center of mass on a motorcycle or bicycle is behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel. That gives the leverage that gravity needs to keep you from flipping over. - EpicSelekta, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Speedwalking? What about running?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/30/2008, -2/+26You clearly haven't seen all of the Segway wipeout videos.
- megamod, on 06/30/2008, -5/+3What are you talking about? Just like in the Simpson's, when Homer was driving that truck that had anti-crash device, the gyroscope will take care of it and avoid the accident at the last second.
- PabloMac, on 06/30/2008, -4/+2I guess The Simpsons = Real Life for some people out there (key words: "out there").
- Issius, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2I guess for some people sarcasm doesn't exist.

- khyberkitsune, on 06/30/2008, -3/+5I don't think so. I withstood a head-on collision (I was on my mountain bike on the sidewalk, he was in a 3/4 ton pickup) and only had a broken leg and wrist and a compression fracture in my spine. Instant death, my ass. Humans are more resilient than that.

- noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -4/+13I think you need to keep reading.

- dupek11, on 06/30/2008, -13/+38Uno + sudden breaking = face plant + facial surgery
Someone has been sleeping during physics class.- noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -3/+12Someone hasn't been reading. You lean back to brake which woul put your weight in a much better position for stopping from high speed.
- Wuss, on 06/30/2008, -13/+5Someone above me is an idiot. Assuming one even had the presence of mind to lean back in a 40mph accident, simple physics dictate that the weight of a human on that thing without anywhere to transfer the energy during sudden braking means A. you will flip over the front B. you'll have to lean so far back you just fall off the back of the Uno and die that way or C. You'll lean back, brake, and the energy transfer will catapult you into the air (depending on how stiff the brakes are).
- noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -2/+21Someone else who needs to read. The thing doesn't have traditional brakes an adjustment back will slow it. If you get into an accident with it you're likely dead anyway but here's an idea, lets let the engineer behind it sort that issue out instead of saying it's impossible.
- revjustin2, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Again, it only gets up to 15mph. The guy "thinks" he could get it up to 40, but if this was ever mass produced, I doubt they'd allow it to go that fast "out of the box".
- dnields, on 06/30/2008, -3/+29"Uno + sudden breaking = face plant + facial surgery
Someone has been sleeping during physics class."
I think you mean sudden "braking", as in slowing or stopping the motion of a machine or vehicle. "Breaking" would be the use of physical force to separate or damage a solid object. That could certainly be a possible outcome of someone braking suddenly, but I don't think that is the meaning you were going for.
Someone else must have been sleeping during English class.- dupek11, on 06/30/2008, -7/+1Oh noes! It's the Spelling Police ! Run for your lives!
- MMSQ3, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Well, in this case, I think Breaking and Braking are pretty much the same thing...right?
You brake, then YOU break. - cwgannon, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2Smarmy prick.
- Monkeydew06, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1This will definately be a trial and error experience... but at 40 MPH or that thing... I wouldn''t want to make ANY mistakes.
- codeWorm, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1I have a sort of uncomfortable "airplane vs. helicopter" feeling in my gut.. Usually when an airplane (or motorcycle) breaks or runs out of gas it can glide, giving the pilot a sporting chance of survival. When a helicopter (or gyroscopic death wheel) breaks, the pilot faces a very delicate balancing act to affect any chances of survival.
Imagine the main fuse blows. The motor will become a huge drag on the drive line, surely smacking you into the ground face-first. The best case failure would be something like a drive belt breaking.. At least there's a narrow chance you'd have an opportunity to choose weather you wanted to fall off the front or off the back.
That said, I still wait to try it. :)

- khyberkitsune, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2Yea, you didn't pay attention in physics class. Don't you know what "gyroscopic stabilization" means?
- AgentMull, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2If you paid attention you would know that gyroscopic stabilization doesn't effect the radial axis. You stop quickly, you face plant the ground.

I've read about Embrio a long time ago. Not sure what happened to it.- fuzzlog, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Probably the Embrio is too expensive to develop for now, It is powered by a fuel cell while the Uno is electric.
Just because a similar project has been tried, it doesn't mean that this one is not viable?
Gas powered car have coexisted with diesel powered car for a long time. - GiJoeBob, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I don't think the Embrio ever got past the mock up you see in the photos.
- ErikHarrison, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4It never made it past the embryonic stage, go figure.
- chantron, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6The project was aborted.
- frenchi, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1too many faceplants

- briguy200, on 06/30/2008, -2/+11It looks cool, but why is it called the "Uno" if it still has two wheels?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/30/2008, -0/+11He's a big fan of the card game.
- PabloMac, on 06/30/2008, -0/+12Because it sounds better than "bio." Uno what I mean?
- radioshack7, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Because you only get uno chance to ride it correctly.
- sandiegodude, on 06/30/2008, -4/+19Sure looks aerodynamic. Must slice through those 15 mph winds pretty well...
On a serious note though, the fact the inventor chipped a bone on his very first test ride doesn't garner much trust from me... Maybe if it had a front stabilizing wheel so you wouldn't faceplant the first time you hit something, i.e. a pothole or railroad tracks or something. I understand gyroscopes, but even they can only do so much!- marx2k, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6"the fact the inventor chipped a bone on his very first test ride doesn't garner much trust from me..."
Don't base your judgment of an invention based on the first try anyone has ever used it. If I had that mindset, I'd think bicycles were inherently unsafe the first time I fell off one (which was the first time I got one) - Goombellaofgoom, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3He chipped a bone while riding a crude experimental version of this... not the one he's showing off now.
- spxiii, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3He chipped a bone because he isn't an engineer and doesn't exactly know what he's doing...hence the partnership with the engineer who knows what he's doing and the subsequent successful ride by an 8 year old kid.
- Kormiku, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Doesnt take much to chip a bone. My friend chipped my shin bone when he kicked me. It healed up about 5 months later and now its stronger than it was before.
- Issius, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Yea...called shin splints. I get them a lot from sparring (but not so much anymore cause I learned real fast not to make shins collide :D)
I think it'd hurt more in the knee though.

Aw hell, then he'd have a tricycle.

- danharlow, on 06/30/2008, -2/+4It may not be perfect yet, but at least he's trying. I'll buy one when it's ready.
- pixeldust, on 06/30/2008, -2/+3I'd wager this thing will never be for sale, especially not in the U.S.
No suspension
Ultra slow, atleast for now (and probably for the best)
The possibility for catastrophically crashing do to obstacles or component failure is ridiculously high
There really isn't a reason for it, what's wrong with the time proven and much more practical motorcycle?- ErikHarrison, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1Did you not read the article? He said it was to replace all of the two stroke engines. This uses no fuel.... ?

- Clark3934, on 06/30/2008, -3/+14Here are some *early* test runs.

I have no idea if that link works for everyone. You might have to be friends with the creator of the bike to see the video. - Snuff99, on 06/30/2008, -3/+12Deathcycle.
- weizbox, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Did anyone not think of this general idea when first learning about the Segway?
Wish I was 19 and loaded with enough money to spend it on projects like this...
/envious- pixeldust, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1The one wheel prototype/concept has been around for a while, this guy is just the first one silly enough to actually make one.
- Monkeydew06, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2It's not one-wheeled.
- pixeldust, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Same concept/drawbacks, just minor implementation differences.

- adammharvey, on 06/30/2008, -5/+10how many times is this stupid thing going to pop up on digg?
Here is one of them i can find, and im sure there are plenty more in there.
http://digg.com/autos/One_Motorcycle_That_I_ll_Nev ...- ErikHarrison, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2posted above.
- mogebier, on 06/30/2008, -5/+9Geez, who is really going to be stupid enough to buy this??
- guitaristanyc, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7What's wrong with the author of this article? We get comparisons to Star Wars and Blade Runner, neither of which really feature contraptions that look like this, yet we don't get the most obvious comparison, ie TRON?!
:)- ryusen, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0actually i think Venus Wars is the best reference to use. Never read it, but i remember seeing one wheeled bikes in that show and thinking the same thing... "sudden stops must hurt."
- leonardoty, on 06/30/2008, -3/+7This fp'd about 2 months ago.
http://digg.com/autos/One_Motorcycle_That_I_ll_Nev ...- ErikHarrison, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1and about ten people posted that link above you. Who cares who was first?
- AaronSTL, on 06/30/2008, -6/+6George Bush falling off one of these in 3... 2... 1...
- dafragsta, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4This BEGS for a photoshop.
- ktags, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2Maybe its just me but I think he's getting a lot of credit for just changing the form factor of a segway. I'm sure there was more adjustments and whatnot but essentially thats all it is. Not hating, just making an observation; i'm still jealous. But damn does it look dangerous especially >30mph.
- DigitalMuse, on 06/30/2008, -3/+2The gyroscope for this also allows you to turn left and right. Segway only goes forward and backward.
- monkeyrun, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2I am pretty sure Segway can turn left and right also ....

- pharekyz, on 06/30/2008, -2/+8My fiancee is nervous enough about me wanting a motorcycle. If I show her this thing, she's going to ***** a brick.
- bongone, on 06/30/2008, -5/+5The erockit does 50mph... Just sayin'.
http://www.erockit.net- Monkeydew06, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4It's also, in no way comparable to the Uno. By your same arguement I could say, "The Dodge Viper can do 200mph... Just sayin'."
- LOCK3D, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1That thing is hideous looking.
- stucktildekey, on 06/30/2008, -1/+11Is it just me or does that picture of the kid make him look like a total douche?
- Treoinmypocket, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6The one thing I never see in these articles is how long the charge lasts. Segways and the like get taxed by hills and they just seem way to impractical from the standpoint of needing frequent recharges.
Anybody know the facts and figures on distance and time for which the charge lasts at both ends of the scale?- Kormiku, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I dont think they are that far into their design of it. Im pretty sure that his current goal is to have a ridable machine, doubt he is focusing on efficiency just yet.
- Treoinmypocket, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Good point.
I was actually referring to all articles on all electrics - be they Tesla roadsters, segways or something new like this.
I find it frustrating and mildly suspicious that these specific detail is not more prominently discussed.
For any of these devices to be truly utilitarian - and therefore adopted/successful - they are going to have to reasonably approximate the range, power and longevity of the current combustion engines.
- Treoinmypocket, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Good point.

- fvenne, on 06/30/2008, -2/+4This vehicle is a copy of the “Embrio” made by Bombardier Recreational Products in 2003.
I hope the constructor know that and didn't claim himself as the inventor of that new concept of motorcycle!
look at this link:
http://www.gizmag.com/go/2350/- FeelMyApathy, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1The Embrio is a concept only (e.g. it's just a mockup, it doesn't run.) Similar in concept, except Gulak's runs.
- ErikHarrison, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Read the comments above moron. The embrio runs on a fuel cell.
- Philbert, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Embrio only has one wheel.
- crunchdigg, on 06/30/2008, -1/+21very cool, until you're sitting at a light and sneeze, sending you into the intersection.
