It isn't. - clie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The *Real* Lazy Man's Guide to Budgeting: 3 Painless Ways to Cut Spending
1) Stop buying *****.
2) ?
3) Profit. - Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"#6 Got a Salary Hike? You will probably want the big screen plasma TV ... For a change, instead of investing your money on these, you could consider increasing your 401k or IRA contribution"
Saying goodbye to a big screen HDTV doesn't sound "painless" to me! - Sp0rAdiC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1213. Use cash. Whenever you can, use cash instead of credit cards. Don't EVER use your credit cards to purchase daily items like groceries. And don’t forget to note down your cash purchases.
I don't understand this. Anything I buy at the grocery store or gas station costs me 5% less if I use my credit card. I've only had it for three months, and I've already gotten a $75 check back from them. What the advice should be is "If you don't have money to pay the bill, don't use a credit card." - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11who are you calling lazy?
i'll read this later. - DapperScoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11A truly lazy man wouldn't read a list 101 items long.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I blame science
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"71. Try to do your laundry once or twice a week. This way, you’ll be able to do full loads and save on water, and electricity."
Maybe I'm off base here, but who is doing laundry that often? - Buttercup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i blame the gods for my money problems.
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm a lazy man. So...... 101 tips?
Screw that, I can't be bothered to read that many.
Gonna put Family Guy on. - muvment256, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Eat less and excercise more.
oops, nevermind, thats the cure for being obese, you fat-asses. - sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, this is just dumb. You get a lot of freebies (I fly pretty much for free on my credit card miles) for using your credit card for everything IF you can handle paying it off every month. I realize a lot of people can't do that, but if you can it pays back well.
- tpaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, in fact "painless ways to save money" is a bit of an oxymoron if you have trouble with spending it.
- bikini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5not me or any of the dudes i lived with.
thats for DAMN sure. - nighthwk1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One that isn't mentioned is a "keep the change" program with the bank... all purchases are rounded up to the next dollar, and the extra change goes into your savings account each day. I know BofA does this, but it sounds like something that will catch on with other banks.
- Zalien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+382. If the quantity of leftovers isn’t too much, you can add it to dog or cat food occasionally. This stretches their regular food and reduces the cost.
Add cat or dog food to stretch out my leftovers?? What?? - kfconme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not to mention a better credit report/availability.
well, as long as you pay your bills on time. - WallyAnti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know there are great ways to save money on credit cards but it never seems to work out that way for anyone I've ever known or even heard of. I actually had a job as a collections rep for two days. I stayed just long enough to get through training and lemme tell ya If you need motivation to stay away from credit cards I'd suggest you do the same. So my advice is... Never ever ever ever ever ever sign up for a credit card--ever. I'm not even going to include and exception for "unless you have to" because "have to" seems to have lost it's traditional meaning for most folks. Spend the money you've got people. If you don't have money credit cards will make it so you wont have money either.
- bikini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"According to a study by Harvard, signing up for a gym membership is one of the best ways to prevent exercise AND lose some hard earned money."
harvard said that joining a gym prevents exercise?
wouldnt.... that... increase your chances of.... working out?
right?
if, since joining, you had access to a facility with all sorts of equipment and trained staff that you obviously don't have in your house?
am i wrong? - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I put just about EVERYTHING on my credit card. Cab rides and the corner store are about the only things I use cash for. I get ThankYou points from Citi and they're beginning to add up.
- grubesteak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's not that cut and dry. Studies have shown that when you pay with plastic, you're more likely to spend up to 12 percent *more* than if you paid with cash. So, that 5 percent you saved with your credit card is actually costing you a loss of seven percent.
Don't believe me? Why do you think McDonald's added plastic to their methods of payment options? Their sales went up.
And you're getting ripped off. Plus, up to 70 percent of credit card users don't pay their cards off on time, every time. Then the interest kicks in.
I only know this because a couple of years ago I decided I was getting out of debt. I cut up my credit cards and now have money instead of credit. I don't mean to spam, but I learned everything from www.daveramsey.com. Check it out if you're interested in having money instead of bills. - arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh for the love of Science, you two!
- kfconme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think they took that statistic from me, I had a few memberships I joined then forgot about/was too lazy to fulfill them. plus the cancellation fee is a bitch.
I don't think this article applies to all, its intended for the shmucks in debt.
...oh wait, that is just about all of us. ; - gotjukies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+228. If you’ve paid off your credit card...
Close the account?
Doesn't that hurt your credit score? I was told to shred my credit card and leave the account open to preseve my debt to availble credit ratio. - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A much better rule would be: never carry a balance. I use my credit card as much as I like, but I am able to pay the bill in its entirety when it comes. As long as you never carry a balance you're good to go.
- woobidoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Switch off your computer when you are not using it??? What kinda stupid crap advice is that... I never turn of my computer... Never ever, no way!!
- WallyAnti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention that might put things into better perspective. On a bad week that particular collections agency claimed that they added another 45,000 new "aquired" debts to their accounts. They claimed a good week brought in over 100,000.
- sassyspacey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with this point somewhat. As much as I worked out a lot during the earlier part of my membership, eventually I got lazy and stopped going. As such, I just maximized probably 8 of the 12 months I paid for. Even after I notified the gym to cancel my membership, they made me pay for the 2 months after I cancelled, which sucked. You would be much better off finding a pay-per-use gym scheme or using the free gym in your workplace (if you have one) rather than paying a monthly or annual fee.
- tikistyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+116. Raise your auto insurance deductable.
?? To go from 250 to 500 will cost you an average of 4 or 5 bucks a month. At that rate, you would have to go accident free for 4 years to break even. I wouldn't notice a few bucks, but i'd notice 250 at once. This one is a bad choice.
Unless you have outragous car insurance due to your reckless driving...which then you'd want a low deductable anyway because you'll use it... - sassyspacey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know any woman who would actually buy a piece of clothing before going to the dressing room to fit it first. That woman in the example must be really lazy.
- wagthesam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I disagree with a lot of things. Credit cards are needed to build credit, for future purchases such as a house.
Why do I need to cancel my gym membershipo? I go 3 times a week and lift and get plenty of excercise out of it. Same goes for everyone i know that has one. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think we know what he's trying to say. I put one bitful of osso bucco in my dog's dish yesterday, and boom all his kibble was gone without him looking back to the table. Doesn't take much. Also instead of buying canned dog food for a change for my dog, I feed him cans of fish. Tuna, sardines, herring, mackerel, and sometimes salmon if it's cheap enough. Dog loves it.
- DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"This stretches their regular food and reduces the cost."
:V - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My deductable of $1000 saves me several hundred dollars for each 6 month cycle (Geico). I keep the deductable in savings (just in case) and earn interest on it.
"you would have to go accident free for 4 years to break even"
Why should that be a big deal?
Maybe tip 102 should be to drive more carefully.
I'm up to 20 years without an accident. - VnutZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those driving tips he suggested are 100% true. For factual proof, check out OmniNerds article that shows graphically how altering driving habits can save gas (and thus $$ in your wallet).

- spenceman01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is "Terminate your eBay account"? That is, of course, if you're not selling and just buying.
- thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just go this site (http://www.onlineconversion.com/percentcalc.htm) and figure out what 10% of your pre-tax income is. Try to save that much every month. If its too much for you then drop down to 6%. Set this money aside every month and you'll be on your way.....
- halik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2half of those were dumb as hell
- grubesteak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@gotjukies
Depends on what your goal is. Your FICA score is merely a measure of your ability to maintain a lot of debt for an extended period of time.
You can live without a FICA score. Warren Buffet did get rich using his Discover card. - RedbeardUH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is true...unless you have a bunch of CCs....but if you have 3 or fewer its a great idea.
- bikini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1well i mean i know some people don't go to the gym even when they have a membership, even I've done it.
but statistically speaking, wouldn't that increase your likelihood to exercise?
going to a gym is a matter of discipline and motivation, kinda like sticking to a budget is.
i think its bad advice to say "don't get a gym membership because you won't use it". if you DO use it, then it might be worth it. if you DON'T use it then its a waste of money. - Dean3740, on 04/11/2008, -0/+0sucks, man.
- RedbeardUH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I whole-heartedly agree. I use my CC for big ticket items that absolutely are not impulse purchases and pay the bill in full. And anyone who gets 5% cash back is going to have some huge yearly fees that wipe out that extra money. CC companies are in the business of making money...not giving it back.
- tocksin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1and indeed i stopped at about 9
- PARAPA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of it makes sense obviously. But also some are stupid!
Come on! Seriously!
If you can't properly use your money, SIMPLE! - Stop wasting it on drugs/gadgets!
That's what my mum always used to say! - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
George W. Bush is a Harvard graduate, I think that says it all. - Dean3740, on 04/11/2008, -0/+0Another way to visit great places both international and domestic having fun and still save money on your trip is by staying at student/budget hostels, not only are they chic and fun they are very very cheap, you can easily pay 30.00 for a mixed dorm and hang out with people your age, so theres constant good fun, find out more by checking this website http://nyhostel.com/
- RedbeardUH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Needed to build credit" is a bunch of baloney. One of the best ways to build credit is merely owning a CC for a long time WITHOUT EVER USING IT! That's right...purchases are not needed to build credit. In fact...purchases can HURT your credit report if you use 40% or more of your credit line even if you pay it in full...
- phezz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+142. Know yourself: This one’s more for the female of the species. We tend to have this habit of buying something that looks spectacular on the mannequin....
