Paying an extra $10 or whatever a month to access the internet you already have access to through cable is ridiculous. Took the rough economy to finally get her to cut some extra expenses and AOL was one of them. THANK GOD

- kefkaantakrist, on 07/08/2009, -0/+7You know, it's really easy to say that AOL should have been working toward offering broadband for a long time. But how? Were they supposed to lay copper to every home in America? That would have been prohibitively expensive. Launch a satellite and sell dishes? Either they or the customer would have to pay for the dish - expensive again, which is why other satellite internet companies haven't taken off. Subcontract to the cable and telephone companies? That would mean AOL was just making the sales and taking a commission, and eventually everyone would figure out they could just work directly with the local provider.
It appears AOL never really had a chance. Buying Time Warner probably seemed like a great idea at the time - as a way to get into the cable broadband market. But they gave up a lot of stock (and control) in that deal. - inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6I used to work for AOL a long time ago, had something like 500 free hours after I quit, they upgraded me, and that was over 10 years ago. I paid it, as they put me on collection 2 years after the fact. It was pure hell trying to get that fixed. I hate AOL with a passion.

When they tell you that they don't have to provide proof of the debt laugh and then go to http://annualcreditreport.com and see and contest stuff on your credit report for free and online. They say that kind of stuff to the credit bureaus and it is immediately off your record. They keep harassing you send them a cease and desist letter then sue the collection agency for $1000 in small claims court. That will shut them up and you will get $1000 if you do it right. - FFandMMfan, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5I don't know why anyone would use AOL. I had it years ago, and aside from the ridiculous pricing and ***** speeds, I had once said "***** you" in a chat room and they shut down my account and forced us to pay them to reinstate it because I was "being offensive".

I believe it went something like this.... an AOL employee quit and released documentation to the media that AOL knew that 60% of it's customers didn't own a computer. (I'm not positive on that percentage but it was large) and then some people tried to sue saying that they thought it was some support group and that the CD's were souvenirs. One lady sued because she thought the "Pop-up blocker" would help counteract her husbands cialis. I'm not surprised it's still shady.

However, AOL had BYOA for a long time. Even AFTER the merger with Time Warner Cable, AOL did NOTHING for YEARS to even offer a way for Time Warner Cable users who were paying for high speed internet from AOL/Time Warner the ability to bundle AOL with their High Speed Internet.
In short: Time Warner killed AOL. They stopped mailing CDs, they stopped advertising, and they didn't even consider an upgrade plan to Broadband. Say what you will about Steve Case, but the man knew how to grow market share.
Can someone even name one single thing that AOL/Time Warner attempted to do to gain market share after they merged? - kefkaantakrist, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1They never really had that money - AOL bought Time Warner with stock and debt transfer. That means Time Warner shareholders saw their stock nullified and replaced with shares in the new company, and AOL took on the debt obligations of Time Warner.
AOL probably could have invested some of the money they did have into laying copper, but it would have been very expensive and not very profitable, and their competition was able to offer competitive service using mostly the same infrastructure they already had in place. - inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1So glad I bought my own domain name and setup my own data center.

Dear Mr Tim Armstrong,
Congratulations on your recent appointment as CEO of AOL.
If you get chance to see this email and it doesn't get passed to file 13, this will give you an insight from one
disgruntled ex-customer.
I have had ongoing problems with diabolical speeds when using AOL, (see attached evidence.) I contacted your
customer department on several occasions to try and resolve the problem and unfortunately they fell on deaf ears
because nothing was ever resolved, even to the extent of contacting ISPA to try and see if they could help.
I was later informed after the 3rd complaints procedure that nothing could be done because AOL are no longer signed
up to ISPA, so I tried Otelo, but received no replies.
I am now in the process of switching my broadband due to the poor service from AOL and am now receiving calls
everyday from AOL demanding I pay the final payment, even though I have explained that it will have to be paid at
the end of the month, and am now being held to ransom because AOL will not release my phone until the bill is paid.
Please be aware that I insist on a reply from the CEO.
And here is the reply that I received;
I am sorry about the problems your partner has had. I will ask one of our high level service team to look into it
and contact you to resolve matters. Ian Livingston.
I was then sent this email;
Good Day,
I received a message regarding the issues you have been experiencing with AOL. Please leave me your phone number so
we may contact you to discuss this. Also please let us know the AOL screen name. Again our apologies for the
inconvenience, and I appreciate your time and patience.

I sent these details to Mr Lothar and guess what, I am still waiting for a reply.
So personally, I will never go with AOL again and will advise everyone that I repair, upgrade and install computers
for to do the same. Also, AOL would not release the phone line either, so we were held to ransom for nearly 3 weeks
while BT tried their damned hardest to get us back online.
Update:
I have now paid the oustanding bill, AOL then put me back online.....for an amazing two days. I have now got no
internet, even though I am paid up for another 2 weeks and have to wait yet another 10 days to get back online with BT. - crilen007, on 07/08/2009, -1/+2That's America for ya!
