- bigjoeportagee, on 11/20/2007, -9/+265The most surprising part is that this was a heterosexual-age of consent evangelical sex scandal.
- PATSCRU, on 11/20/2007, -5/+136YOU'RE KIDDING...a church leader in an extremely hypocritical sex scandal? what is this world coming to? But seriously, I'm glad these people keep proving that there still is divine justice in the world.
- sugarkang, on 11/20/2007, -4/+106"Earl Paulk manipulated her into an affair from 1989 to 2003 by telling her it was her only path to salvation"
why doesn't that ever work on chicks when I say it? - drmangrum, on 11/20/2007, -8/+71When asked why he slept with his sister-in-law, the 80-year-old Paster reponded: "That was a woman? Damn, I'm so confused."
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -8/+51*sigh* Not again... Is there any end in sight? Well, I've got to admit, the whole "heterosexual" thing is an interesting new spin on it, but man... I've gotta ask, what exactly is religion supposed to do for us again? It's sure as hell not saving us from moral bankruptcy, which is what I thought the whole point was (not that I mean to suggest that people without religion can't be fine, upstanding, perfectly moral/ethical people, it's just that's the argument I'm always hearing on as to why we need religion).
- MiDri, on 11/20/2007, -1/+33I wonder if he used the classic line, "Come with me if you want to live."
- floridiot2, on 11/20/2007, -4/+31He took "Love thy neighbor" a little too literally.
- sweetnuts4sale, on 11/20/2007, -2/+21FUNNY, that's the first thing I thought also...
- weeeezzll, on 11/20/2007, -0/+18Don't go jumping the gun about this guy NOT being a pervert.
"In 2001, yet another female church member filed a lawsuit claiming that the bishop sexually molested her when she was a child and later when she was a teenager. That suit was settled out of court in 2003."
He has been accused at least 3 times before of pressuring women he worked with into sex and sexual favors under the guise of it being the "path to salvation", or part of "God's plan".
So far no men have come forward. - quaxon, on 11/20/2007, -0/+17"I swear i thought she was only eleven!"
- ucbluman, on 11/20/2007, -1/+18How do you convince someone that the only way to salvation is to have an affair with you? I can't even imagine the line of reasoning. This man is amazing.
Thanksgiving at the Paulk's is going to be all sorts of awkward:
"Hey D.E., go sit next to your father."
Hilarity will ensue - weeeezzll, on 11/20/2007, -0/+16Oh yea, and he has also been accused in court documents of molesting his granddaughter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3GsiincDCg&eurl=ht ... - hybridjosto, on 11/20/2007, -9/+25Christians, whether they are leaders or not, are just as likely to do wrong (or socially unacceptable) things. The whole point is that nobody can obtain the perfection of God but if they are truly sorry and ask God for forgiveness, He will give it willingly due to his grace. Unfortunately it is a "Do God says not as I do" perspective from church leaders who will be more criticized because of their position in the community.
- DeadtoSin, on 11/20/2007, -13/+27As a Christian, I've got to say I agree with all of you.
Religion is oppressive and it should be wiped out. Religion has caused horrible things in society. Christianity has not. Christians are people that live their lives as close to Christ's life as they can. Religion is what the people who just sit in the pew every sunday and tune out the pastor have.
Christianity is in truth about a relationship, not a religion. I believe the people that prance around like Christians will be judged harsher than the people who didn't even claim Christianity at all.
See? Christian diggers and Non-Christian diggers alike agree on that issue. Religion should be wiped out.
Relationship shouldn't. - g00dETH3R, on 11/20/2007, -5/+18Megachurches, why do so many of you Americans fall for such an obvious scam? I'm not trying to be nasty I just don't understand.
- Rippleeffect, on 11/20/2007, -3/+15Well, seeing that this issue is neither a gay issue, nor a child molestation issue, I fail to see your point.
- Jexie, on 11/20/2007, -2/+13"But the fact that he preaches against this sort of thing and probably demonizes others who do it is telling" - Yes its telling that its a big deal, its time these fire and brimstone ***** are taken to task for never living up to their own standards.
- Timetheos, on 11/20/2007, -3/+14Religion does not impart nor improve morality.
- Jexie, on 11/20/2007, -0/+11"Earl Paulk manipulated her into an affair from 1989 to 2003 by telling her it was her only path to salvation" - Something tells me the sermon you get is a little different than what he feeds to some other people.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 11/20/2007, -0/+11Did they condone adultery?
- DeadtoSin, on 11/20/2007, -1/+11Yes, I certainly agree that Christian's should work together. I said RELIGION should be wiped out, not the Church. If we define Christians as someone who needs only a relationship, and not a religion...Well, we have to define the church as a gathering of true Christians. Fake Christians and legalists and crazed war hawks should be put out of the church.
- quaxon, on 11/20/2007, -1/+11Its like the mall and god all rolled into one. really an american thing, youre not from here are you?
- quaxon, on 11/20/2007, -2/+12you need to find the ones with low self esteem, i recommend middle america.
- Fordi, on 11/21/2007, -1/+10I'm sorry, what does this story have to do with homosexuality?
- fhornplayer, on 11/20/2007, -1/+10Wouldn't it have been easier to just say "He knocked up his sister-in-law?"
- thebellmaster1x, on 11/20/2007, -1/+10Whoa-ho-ho.
Now, I'm one of the biggest liberals I know...but seriously, man, look at your comment history. Calm yourself. - banmaster, on 11/20/2007, -3/+12The difference? Megachurches are able to fleece thousands of people at once, while normal ones can only do it to a few dozen at most!
- sgtbutterscotch, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8You mean besides thou shalt not commit adultery?
- Corrosionx, on 11/20/2007, -2/+10That the purpose God gave them, to make us realize organized religion is evil.
- bbardlbradd, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9Easy girls are Christian because they are gullible.*
- joshuaer, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9that has to be one of the best comments i have seen on digg!
- ccourt23, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8It is just a term for a really huge church with a lot (1000s) of members...much bigger than the average church.
- drum_bum, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8"A megachurch is a large church, having around 2,000 or more worshipers for a typical weekly service."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megachurch - lexington86, on 11/20/2007, -5/+13wait... are we still supposed to act surprised...?
- greatcaffeine, on 11/20/2007, -2/+9Apparently the commandments are more like guidelines.
- banmaster, on 11/20/2007, -3/+10WHEN the ***** will people wake the hell up and realize that these bastards who preach one thing but do the opposite are NOT worth listening to?!
And yet is these same bastards who wield so much power over the masses, with their illogical and unprovable threats of eternal damnation, their promise that if you do anything bad (like they themselves do) that you'll never enter the gates of heaven!
What a crock of utter *****! - bigjoeportagee, on 11/20/2007, -5/+12christian women are easy because they're gullible.
- blindhammer, on 11/20/2007, -1/+8Reminds me of the Cathars of Spain (or was it France). They advocated that a relationship with God was personal and that the Church was not needed.
Unfortunately, they were all killed during the Inquisition. - Smaulz, on 11/20/2007, -5/+12EXACLTY
- Phssthpok, on 11/20/2007, -0/+6I think he's talking about a general "Thou shall not covet thy neighbors wife." type of demonize. Some religious people seem to break many commandments they preach about.
- drachemorder, on 11/20/2007, -4/+10Please be aware that we Christians think this is at least as sick and hypocritical as anyone else does. In fact the Apostle Paul taught that we should exclude people who do these things from fellowship (1 Corinthians 5).
- compuclean, on 11/20/2007, -1/+7I think the fact that in it's prime, it had over 10,000 members, it's own TV show and spent millions on an educational establishment... The local parish church couldn't accomplish that ;)
- joshuaer, on 11/20/2007, -0/+6I went to one about 6 years ago, the guy running it had a 2 million dollar house, drove a BMW he even had a plasma screen when i had diner at his place. that was the last time i ever went to that church. So i am like you i have no clue why people would ever go to one, I understand it even less that people keep falling for the god can heal you crap.
- DeadtoSin, on 11/20/2007, -2/+8Oh, did the Flying Spaghetti Monster give you any credible links where kill estimates have been tallied?
I promise you, if the truth is know, Christian's don't kill. They love even their enemies. The crazed nut jobs of the world have the ability to claim Christianity and kill behind that guise. Its not the same thing at all. - mythril, on 11/21/2007, -0/+6Maybe I should live in fear then? I am not weak willed enough to accept grandiose claims without proof.
Let me say it loud and clear, GOD AS DESCRIBED IN THE BIBLE IS A MYTH. If he isn't then I accept that he is a jerk who will pass judgment on me for no good reason. - inactive, on 11/20/2007, -5/+10Sorry for my ignorance, but WTF is a mega church?
I tried looking but all I get is church websites and I don't get what the difference is between a church and a mega church. - MiDri, on 11/20/2007, -2/+7hence the Christian part, ohhh no I didn't!
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -1/+6There is a huge correlation between repression and perversion.
- weeeezzll, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5This isn't the first time scandals of this type have come up for this guy:
http://aidanmaconachyblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/arc ... - joshuaer, on 11/20/2007, -2/+7religion and casual sex do not really fit if it did I would be more religious!
