- droidiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+68my mom called 911 once when I was younger for my grandma, her cousin answered the phone, they didn't realize they were talking to each other until my mom said the address and then she just went "Jackie??"
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45As a parent I can say that would be seriously disturbing.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44I know I am going to get dug down for this but I don't care, im tired of it.
Its almost like people on Digg are afraid of any religion. If anything mentions anything religious half the comments are full of attacks and insults towards that and any other religion.
Do you feel so lonely that you need to hide behind the anonymity of the Internet before you can say something like this?
And please don't give me that "im not afraid, heres my address, come get me" reply, you know that nobody in their right minds would travel across the country or even cross-country just because of an Internet fight, you know you are only posting that because the chances of somebody actually coming after you, even if they lived on the same block as you, are 1 in a million.
I have nothing against atheists, I am not going to try to convert somebody against their religion or beliefs, but I would also not attack them for it either. Seriously, these attacks are just childish, most of them consist of less than a sentence and are nothing more than an insult than an actual argument. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36All of you need to get a life, and quick.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25And then Jesus...mighty name......came into our HEARTS......and BLESSED us with his might. Lord here me now, PRAISE HIM, pick up that bible and shout it to the lord.
*pushes someone over*
You are healed! - TheBigBoss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Its not so much that Jesus will save his life. Its about giving him hope that he will stay alive, believing that you will die or you will stay alive can make all the difference.
- evilelf2407, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19wow how did his mom stay so calm, thats incredible.
- xl22k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Kinda crazy how these things happen....
- NoStoppingUs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23i know most of the people on here despise anything religious. i'm agnostic myself, but when you see first hand the good that believing in a higher power can do (when it's not used for you know, cutting off the heads of others), i see nothing wrong with it. i'm sure if i was ever in that situation, i would probably do the same thing if it brought me comfort.
- toast1226, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14sounded like she thought he was going to die, i'm amazed she could be so calm.
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14if my mom was the operator:
"i told you about that Jefferson boy, that young man is no good. he's a pothead, probably into gangs and drugs. but did you listen to me? no, i carried you for nine months in my own body, do you listen to a word i say? no...it's like that time when you were 8..."
"MOM!....this REALLY isn't the time...."
"--and you wet yourself in school..."
"Jesus, take me now...please!" - Filter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I agree. It's amazing that she stayed so calm. Most people would freak out. You can tell she would be a great 911 operator in any situation.
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10That's what she's trained to do isn't it? she was at work - in work mode, prepared for anything, including, her own son calling in, with a gunshot wound.
- bewareofmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@synystar:
Why the hate? Because apparently religious tolerance doesn't apply on the 'net.
Even if she wasn't religious, she did the right thing - keeping a gunshot victim aware and conversing helps fight against shock. Besides, even expert surgeons don't operate on their own family - she deserves a medal for being so calm in the face of personal involvement. - axiomflash, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16she wasn't worried because her son was saved by jesus, remember?
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10it's better than "oh *****! ***** dude you're probably gonna die... I'll be at the hospital after work. Later."
- Persol2point0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"If I were ever in that situation I'd jerk off."
Yeah, when losing blood, the best thing to do is divert some of the blood that is left in your body. :/ - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It's her faith. For all she knew her son was about to die and she was giving him what she believed to be his last hope at being "saved" before passing on. She wanted to ensure that she had done everything possible to see her son in the "afterlife" according to her beliefs. Why all the hate?
- Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I can't believe how many comments are bashing this woman and this story because of the whole Jesus thing.
Grow up. Seriously.
At least this story is concentrating a list of people for me to block :) - ThePug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8MOM?!?!?!?!?!?
- DDRSkata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@Cyber_Akuma: Your post says basically what I've wanted to say for a while. The attacks on religion are completely unnecessary. Even as a Christian, I make jokes about religion (including my own), but I don't attack anyone's beliefs. Except for Scientology, which doesn't actually count as a religion in this man's humble opinion because it was created by a science fiction author who said that the quickest way to make money is to start a religion, and lo and behold, the key to his religion is to keep paying money.
But I digress.
The thing I've noticed here is that people are so angry at or fearful of religion that they attack it for no reason, with the ferocity atheism has been traditionally attacked in the real world. They get angry about this woman telling her son to pray. If you were a religious person, of course you would tell your child to pray for help after he got shot! They make it sound like she wasn't going to send an ambulance, but just hope Jesus would take care of it. She still dispatched help, but she called for a boost from something she believes in, and just because some random Digg users don't agree doesn't make the woman crazy.
Kudos, Cyber_Akuma. Thanks for that post. - Persol2point0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"I have nothing against atheists, I am not going to try to convert somebody against their religion or beliefs, but I would also not attack them for it either. As an atheist, the comments here are kind of suprising me as well. If you are going to make fun of someone, at least make sure it's funny. Many of these comments are simply attacks.
There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a mother trying to comfort her son (and herself) through religion, unless it in some way causes them to act stupid. She didn't say "jesus will help you, as long as you don't accept blood products..."
Just because something is imaginary (god/santa/noodly appendages/ponies) doesn't mean that using the imaginary idea to comfort someone is wrong, as long as actions that can actually help are also taken. - ziki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7dispatchers are the ones who deal with the unstable ones. it was her job to stay calm
- Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5RAmen
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm surprised the lady didn't break down or flip out. I bet they have to have a lot of emotional training.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8you'd masturbate when you got a call from your dieing son...?
- Cambo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thats hardcore, 10/10 for staying calm.
- RMoore08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Whackly obviously you've never been or lived in the south... its not just a small hillbilly place that you seem to think it is.. not everyone has guns in their house and the population isn't under 200 in a town so... research a little bit before you say stupid stuff like that
- fauxpaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@the "especially women" comment
http://www.webmd.com/content/Article/107/108405.htm
Here's an interesting article on the different ways men and women handle stress.
"An influential study published in the July 2000 issue of Psychological Review reported that females were more likely to deal with stress by "tending and befriending" -- that is, nurturing those around them and reaching out to others." - nicerobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea, it was a "miracle" that a 911 dispatcher knew how to talk someone through a stressful situation to help a gun shot victim until emergency personnel arrived. And everyone should know that praying to Jesus will apply pressure to wounds to stop bleeding. Satan was causing him to vomit and Jesus help them to roll him on his side so he could puke Satan from his throat. All very informative. Let's just rely on miracles for solving all our problems. It works soooo well!!!
BTW, just curious where the miracle was when young alter boys were being raped by priests? Or miracles that will steer missiles from wedding parties and schools in Iraq and bombs from our sodiers? Or miracles that will steer cars to keep people from crashing and kill people? Or the miracle to save hikers lost in the mountains? Or miracles to keep kids with guns from mowing down innocents in school?
Or are miracles reserved for kids that play with guns and accidentally shot themselves or someone else? If so, miracles pretty much suck ass because I can think of millions of other people the deserve miracles before these lucky *****! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm pretty sure the guys friend and ambulance helped the guy actually.
- chulium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Son's friend or son?
- Wuffles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jesus did not die because he could not save himself, but he died to free us of sin, and give us the opportunity to enter heaven by choosing to believe in Him, God and the practices they believe in.
I think that's the explanation you're looking for. :3 - obrysii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Put me under the "I agree with Akuma"
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why didn't Jesus prevent the shooting in the first place?
People sure are stupid. - FatherG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually Dogmatic the "agnostic/atheist" bit comes from not having made up my mind. Rather than simply say "God(s) do not exist!" or pick a certain religion to call my own , I'm trying to find answers that make sense to me on the whole. Not just dogmatic text belched out at Sunday mass. I've been through things in my life that simply make it impossible to sit down in a pew(?) and accept what I'm being told as "The Truth". God, Buddha, Mohammed, whatever whomever; I'll figure it out eventually.
Laughing even harder right now, thanks. Try turning the other cheek sometime instead of taking such a defensive position. Happy Holidays. - ohhhL3ThaL, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Grow the ***** up and stop derailing.
- FatherG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Um Dogmatic? You may want to change your username to "DogmaticHypocrisy". I love how "is it any surprise that digg (on the internet) is filled with a bunch of low lives who relish bringing others down or ruining their hopes and dreams? It isn't to me" which is preceded by "now we will see the pre-teen atheists come in here and mention something like "and religion isn't used to escape, like the fear of death n stuff? They are so predictable and simple-minded".
Laughing my ass off in internet land right now. The killer is that I'm agnostic/atheist and up until your... colorful reply all that I felt needed to be said was an appeal for free speech. Funny day. - BuffalOBisoN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't watch clips that have commercials.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to the misleading title, "Mom. I'm shot."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I don't see how a comment on digg would bother you so much. Some people really think that an exagerate religious behaviour like this in the news is just stupid, and that people should be free to say so, even if somebody dosen't like it, as much as you are free to say that you don't like those comments.
The childish comments are just a "trail" you cannot avoid, to all the other proper arguments. - gigijin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jesus can digg stories himself!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Peter Popoff.
- hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe I'm just numb to what people are calling "religion bashing" these days, but I really didn't see a lot of it.
I think that for people of faith that is the usual practice...had a bad day at school or work? Talk to Jesus. Feeling nervous about fitting into the swimsuit for summer? Talk to Jesus. Get shot? Talk to Jesus. I'm not making fun, I'm dead serious. And hey, if that works for you I'm glad.
The problem I have, and the only problem I have, with the religious is when they seek to impinge upon my rights. While I may question their beliefs and lifestyle, at the end of the day that's their right. If they want to handle snakes or believe a book is the word of an omnipotent being, that is entirely their business. They can believe that god compels them to attack me with stones and remove my soul with tickling for all it matters. As long as they do not actually try to do so, fine.
But that's the whole issue right there: the religious actively seek to change what I'm allowed to do beyond any rational restraint on liberty. They don't let me buy alcohol on their special day, they want to force me to acknowledge their god, or to teach it next to science. They want too much and it's not right. The religious seem to neglect the fact that when they disarm us of our rights to liberty they are depriving themselves of those very same choices.
They are throwing away their right to buy bibles on Tuesday afternoons between two and four pm, all because it was so important that I didn't buy alcohol on a Sunday. They are going to have to start teaching anal sex as a method of birth control because they wanted abstinence taught. They will be saying "one nation under God and Ren and Stimpy" because they had to have it their way rather than the tolerant, inclusive way.
And that's too bad, because it's not sane. It's not rational. It's not free or just. But, do I say that all Christians are like that? I'd guess less than 1% would arrive at these policies and practices on their own. The problem is they adopt the ideas and rhetoric of each other and the whole religion becomes a mutant form of what was ostensibly a good idea: "treat your neighbor as yourself."
Now if you have gay neighbors, shouldn't you let them get married? If you have thirsty neighbors shouldn't you sell them alcohol on Sundays? If you have ignorant neighbors shouldn't you teach them science and not conjecture? If you have atheist neighbors shouldn't you bake them cupcakes (with icing) and bring them over and after they eat them tell them that you blessed them so that they turned into the flesh of Jesus and ask them, "how did Jesus taste?"
Come on, let's start being nice to one another and focus on liberty. It goes both ways. The religious extremists have stained our flag, and in turn the non-religious have become offended and sought to reaffirm their identities through emboldened anti-religious tirades.
If you're a Christian, next time you get into an argument with an atheist about religious take a moment to acknowledge their right to their belief (and to lotteries/gambling, buying alcohol whenever they please, etc.) and tell them next time you're going to vote for the man that believes in liberty. And don't forget the cupcakes. - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just gotta add you dont just give out your address on the net.........
- bewareofmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree wholeheartedly with Cyber_Akuma. It gets pretty old to watch people rip on another belief system just because they don't agree on it. The internet needs a new dead horse to beat, you know?
And ignore DogmaticAtheism, he's just rabble-rousing. Setting up a straw man, if you're into the logical debate stuff. - kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buried as inaccurate. How hard is it to use an accurate title for the article?
- lotuseater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dogmatic, what on earth does guilt have to do with the absence of a belief in a god? I didn't turn to atheism as a means of escape but as a rational worldview, so I have proven your generalization to be false.
- DawnTrader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>>@DxDy: Why was he shot in his own home? Am I the only one interested in knowing the details?
I'm curious too and I bet the mother asked those questions LATER. At that crucial moment however, those details were not critical to saving his son's life. -
