It's one thing to protect children from predators and another to use the legal system to keep their lives sterile and completely devoid of anything sexual, which they'll have to learn and deal with when they're older anyways. Are they trying to raise a generation of 40 year old virgins?
- jasmin888, on 10/11/2007, -1/+45I think it was good that someone stepped in and tried to stop this 8 year old from a threatening career as sex offender - this shows the mature and sound way Americans deal with anything related to sex - never overreact - never scared to confront the problem - just like the teacher who got 40 years for an uncontrollable computer (that sentence has unfortunately later been changed temporarily) rogue computers should lead to severe consequences lest society falling apart.
Anything that could be in some way, shape or form be seen as related to or alluding to something that someone may feel has the potential to create sexual associations must have the most severe consequences (within the law, of course)

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+45I know some twins who were, ahem, "touched" by their female babysitter. They were 10 or 11 and the babysitter was 15 or so. They both turned out to be normal, straight guys with no problems that resulted from that type of exposure. In fact, they recall that time with a sly smile on their faces, like it was a cool thing for them. I'm not condoning behavior like this, but at the same time, as a man, I don't see alot wrong with it, particularly with their outlook on what happened. I know if I was that age and I got to touch some *****, I'd get high fives all over 5th grade and would grow up remembering it much the same way my twin friends do.
Turn the tables, where it's a young boy and a very young girl, and you run into problems. I believe the problem is more severe under the law because it may just have more severe implications for girls. What if it was a 14 year old male babysitter that dared your 8 year old daughter to touch his penis? Would you still congratulate your daughter and be scared that the attention of prosecuting the 14 year old would harm your daughter more than just letting it slide?

You see, the alleged sexual missconduct occurred and THEN the mother wants her child protected. It's the government's fault that her child was not protected. Laws don't protect children, they provide a vehicle to exact revenge on those who harm them. I am not against that, they serve as deterrent. I am against people thinking they have no responsibility in their child's lives. Blame the state. Then you cry when the state intervenes.
